BTMS-80 vs BTMS-50 (a newbie question)

Hi all! I'm really new to the world of DIY Beauty, and wanted to start simple, with some shampoo and conditioner bars.
I decided to use a very simple Humblebee and Me recipe for a 36g conditioner bar:
Heated Phase:
10.8g Cocoa butter
6.12g traditional virgin coconut oil
7.2g BTMS-50
2.52g Stearic Acid
9g Cetyl Alcohol
Post-heat phase:
0.36g Optiphen™ Plus
However... BTMS-50 is quite expensive and hard to find in my country. My local supplier had it, but also had a promotion on BTMS-80 ( INCI: Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Isopropyl Alcohol) and I kinda bit the bullet and bought it, because, well, you need less, and it would last me more!
I've been having a hard time trying to find info on the BTMS-80 (as not many suppliers have it) and how to substitute one ingredient for another, so I'm asking you guys:
  1. Can this formula use the BTMS-80 and if so, what would need to change? I understand, per the supplier, that I should use 50% of what I would use of the BTMS-50.
  2. Should I use more of other ingredients to complete the 36g?
  3. Are any of the other ingredients incompatible with the BTMS-80?
Thanks so much for your help!

Fitness Diary! 31F, Orange County, failed intermittent fasting but life goes on!

Location: Southern California
Household: Partner and I
Reasons for wanting to get fit: For energy and feeling healthy all around. Around 26-27, my mental and physical health went downhill, partially due to stress but also age got to me sooner than I expected. (Note to all the youngins, this is the age where it goes downhill, not 40) I couldn’t eat all the junk I want, avoid exercising and still feel fine and dandy. I also struggle with lack of energy+ focus issues due to narcolepsy and adhd (inattentive).
Fitness Goal: Strong and energetic, physically I like to have more muscle. I’ve always been skinny fat, I have a thin frame which fools a lot of people into thinking I’m in shape, but I kid you not, it’s all fat between my bones and skin.
Workouts: Prior to Covid, I go on walks, gentle yoga 1x a week, a hike or jog during weekends. Since WFH, I do 45 mins - 1 hour workouts 3-4x a week consistently, and take walks when I’m not deterred by covid, heatwaves or smoke outside due to California being on fire.
Diet: Intuitive eating- I love food and resisting cravings never ends well for me. I have a great relationship with food now, except I should probably eat more greens. That being said, I guess I enjoy new experiences/torture because part of this week involves experimenting with intermittent fasting…
Lifestyle: Sedentary, I WFH on a computer 8-9 hours a day and lay on the sofa or bed reading/ watching shows/ play games the rest of the time. I’m real lazy, exercising is always an event for me.
Note (s)- I’m wearing a mask + taking proper safety precautions going out.
Sorry in advance for poor grammar or spelling mistakes!
-------------------------------------------------------
Monday
8pm- A week ago we were having heat waves and suddenly its sweater weather. I make myself a cup of matcha tea, and check the AQI (air quality index), it’s unhealthy so no walk probably most of the week. We get forest fires every year around this time but this year is especially bad, it’s as if there’s a sepia filter outside. Realizing I forgot chili peppers in the mayak eggs (korean marinated eggs), I prepped the night before, I chop 2 up and toss them in.
9:30pm- I refill my 24oz hydroflask (I try to drink at least 2 bottles per day). Coworker shares a photo of Halloween edition count chocula cereals and I get excited about the strawberry and blueberry versions. I’m love fruity flavors and am a true sucker for anything limited edition.
12pm- Finally get to break out of my fast! I’ve been trying intermittent fasting the last couple of days, it’s challenging for me as a grazer. I sliced up broccoli stems because the one my bf J. picked up is all stems with the tiniest floret head on top (why?!) I attempt to eat that raw with left over pork chop rice out of sheer laziness, and possibly tiredness from IF and its terrible. I eat a mini pumpkin ginger ice cream cone from Trader Joe’s and recover from this tragedy.
2:45pm- I take a break from work and snack on overnight oats- steel cut oats and chia seeds in oatmilk topped with hemp seeds, mix nut butter and usually honey but recently I’m in love with TJ’s maple butter so I use that instead.
4pm- My friends and I do a 45 mins workout session via Zoom, consisting of cardio, abs, legs and yoga stretch thanks to MrandMrsMuscle, MadFit and YogaWithAdriene on youtube.
6pm- Tonight’s dinner is japanese keema curry with grounded kurobuta pork, carrot, onions and potatoes. I experiment with halving the pork the recipe calls for, replacing it with more vegetables and J. (the meat eater) can’t tell the difference. Success! We top the curry with shredded cheddar cheese and eat it along with rice.
7:50pm- Grabbed a 2nd pumpkin ginger ice cream cone as my feeding window narrowly closes. I give my bunny T. her evening pets and treat.
9pm- I take a shower using Lush’s Sultana soap, it smells sweet and not overly strong. Most of my life, I never purchase anything from Lush because it always felt unreasonably expensive but a few years ago, a friend gifted me a bar of soap of theirs and I discovered that the sweet, fruity scents really help curb my sugar cravings ( as well as turning my showers into really pleasant experiences). Since then, I always keep a few bars around.
Tuesday
8am- I don’t feel as hungry today as the last couple of mornings! I make iced apple green tea (from Lupricia), pour a cup and put the pitcher in the fridge. I read more on intermittent fasting, end up buying some ketones strips for science! ($7)
11:20am- I am a weak, imperfect human and broke my fast 40 minutes early, I’m so hungry!! Heated up keema curry with rice and pickled daikon and inhaled it. I also eat an old chocolate caramel easter candy I found in the cupboard.
3pm- Found out a coworker is leaving and need a pick me up. I eat a pumpkin ice cream cone while pondering about my own life choices and career path.
5pm- Our workout session is usually scheduled at 4pm but our unofficial leader has a headache today. The rest of us type B personalities procrastinated and ponder if we should work out today. A whole hour later, we finally get our shit together and do 45 mins of butt, leg, arms and stretch videos.
6:30pm- Tonight’s dinner is Bali bowls with peanut tofu from Feasting at Home blog, it’s a simple recipe but washing and chopping multiple veggies so time consuming! Our bowls consists of shredded cabbage, snow peas, microgreens, carrots, avocado, sweet potato and tofu and delicious peanut sauce and I scarfed it down as the feeding window closes. A trend I’m noticing is on intermittent fasting is that I’m inhaling all my food all the time. Lunch? Inhale because im starving. Dinner? Inhale because my feeding window is closing.
8pm- Make up the work time I spent exercising, thank you WFH for your flexibility.
Wednesday
8am- Weather’s like just kidding, its 80s again.
10:30am- Hunger cues are kicking in, but I soldier on with hot peach green tea (also Lupricia’s, they make really good fruit teas). I noticed the pea shoots I planted a few weeks earlier are getting long so I go out and snip some along with radish microgreens for lunch later. It’s just a handful because my gardening space/patio is tiny.
11:30pm- With mask on, I head over to my parents to pick up our family dog P. because my mom works part time and P. hates being left alone. When I get back, I eat left over bali bowls topped with garden greens and another pumpkin ginger ice cream cone, yikes I only have 2 left. I chop up a sugar kiss melon and put them in container for snacking later.
2pm- Work project isn’t going as I planned and I stress eat 2 milka chocolate cover biscuits.
4pm- Rest day for everyone, no workout today! P. and I go for a short walk around the block instead, I can see the smoke in the air.
7 pm- J. pick up sichuan food but they got the order wrong for the second time in a row. We were really craving the original dish (fish filets with chinese pickles) so J. (bless his soul) drove back to get it exchanged. Due to the mishap, we eat late and finished at 8:15 but I was too hungry to care. We ate the fish with braised spare ribs and rice.
Thursday
9am- Walk the pup, pet the bun and sit on the couch sipping matcha tea while scrolling through reddit. Morning relax time is the best! On traderjoes, I find out the new batch of seasonal fall items are in and I’m at peak happiness and excitement. I jot down a to buy list consisting of pumpkin spice pretzel slims, maple oat milk, spiced chai concentrate, maple kettle corn, cinnamon spread, cinnamon bun cookies, salted caramel hot cocoa, cookie butter beer and truffle precornio cheese. Nothing on this list is healthy lol.
10:30pm- I can already tell intermittent fasting isn’t sustainable for me, spend the rest of the morning looking at charcuterie boards and planning a charcuterie/movie night with my friend O. and her bf (one of the very few people we met up with during covid besides our immediate families)
12:15pm- J’s parent’s drop off food that they bought from another friend who lost her job during covid and is now selling home cook meals to make some extra income. Luckily she’s not struggling but hearing the story makes me think of the people who are. We eat spicy tangy peanut-y noodles and acorn jelly, while feeling thankful.
4pm- Unofficial leader is back and the 50 minute workout is so tough, I’m drench in sweat. I eat a mayak egg for post workout protein along with some kimchi.
5:30pm- Another aromatherapeutic shower, this time with Lush’s citrus-y Karma. Dinner is left over Bali veggie bowls.
10pm- I can’t take the hunger anymore and heat up six soup dumplings. I feel a tad defeated but at the same time recognize if I spend the bulk of my day thinking of food, this might not be the right diet for me.
Friday
9am- I feel exhausted and eat some melon before clocking in for work. Maybe I’m not consuming enough calories on IF?
12:30pm- After morning meeting and chatting about feedback, I take the rest of the day off. Being in the creative field is incredibly fun and rewarding, but is also a stressful and fast pace job with your work being judge constantly. It leaves me little energy for my personal art and on difficult days, I ponder if I should’ve gone into pharmacy or something else, and leave art for my hobby.
1 pm- J., the pup and. I walk to TJs and we pick up maple +sea salt popcorn, cinnamon bun cookies, tomato spread, maple oat milk, another jar of maple butter ( it’s so good!), a baguette, herb goat cheese and truffle pecorino. ($22) Once we’re back at home, I make a plate of sliced baguette with herb goat cheese and truffle pecorino cheese and eat it in bed. (please don’t judge me) I spend the rest of the afternoon reading manga a friend recommended.
6:30 pm- I’m craving fish tacos but there’s leftovers in the fridge so we work on that instead. The pup gets a boiled egg along with his kibble, bunny some greens and a slice of carrot.
8pm- I take the pup for his evening walk and once we’re back, it’s time for his weekly bath. As soon as he hears the bath faucet turn on and sees me walking towards him, tail immediately droops down, its comical! Once the dreaded bath over and he’s mostly dry, I offer him an apology greenie treat.
9pm- I fold clean laundry that have been piling up all week and then apply a face mask on (mahalo’s petal mask, it smells amazing but is also ridiculously expensive) down the youtube and reddit rabbithole I go for the rest of the night.
Saturday
8am- Wake up and hear the pup snoring extra loud.. stifling my laugh, I grab my phone to record it.
8:30pm- I’m up and about cleaning the kitchen, tidying up the living room and swiffering the bathrooms to keep myself busy and not think about breakfast. We’re meeting up with my friend, O. and her bf for farmer’s market then ayce korean bbq lunch (it’ll be our 2nd time eating out since march)
10pm- I stop by TJs pick up maple oat milk and cinnamon spread for O. who can’t find it at her local Tjs and drop off the pup at my parents. We arrive at the farmers market but O. isn’t comfortable going in because it looks crowded from where we’re parked. J. and I walk closer and we realize the crowd is due to a pop up thrift clothes sales in front of the farmers market, once pass it, the farmers market is actually pretty empty and doing a good job social distancing but O. and her bf are already on their way to the kbbq restaurant, so I grab my favorite hummus/dips (3/ $13) and we rush over to meet them. Since its only 11:30, we get the entire outdoor patio to ourselves! We fill up on brisket, bulgogi, pork belly, salad and all the works and it feels a little surreal especially after not dining out for so long. (J. pays) It’s especially good to see our friends. We then walk over to Vons so my friend can pick up some soda and drive over to Tokyo Central for groceries (sweet potatoes, onion, kiwi, alove yogurt and earl grey cheesecake). ($21) Head home and have a bite of matcha ice cream and the earl grey cheesecake.
4 pm- I’m still so full but drag myself off the couch to do an hour of barre and yoga with my friends via Zoom, I feel much better afterwards and hit the showers.
7pm- Make the same plate of baguette and cheese and snack on it. We’re feeling a movie tonight so J. sets up Knives Out on the tv while I keep going with this food decadent day make volcano spicy ramen topped with corn and mayo as well as a cup of coffee because I feel like passing out. The movie is so entertaining, I love these kinds of comical, stylized murder mysteries.
Sunday
7:30am- I wake up still feeling all the food from the night before so I check the AQI, (it reads moderate) and go out for a long walk. Weather is so cool and feels like fall! I pass by this one house where I always hear the indoor bike running, I’m very impressed by that person’s dedication.
8:30am- Once home, I crack open all the windows for the first time in a week and a half. I play with my bun and let her run around while folding kitchen towels (these are great for cutting down paper towel usage).
10am- I read the newest money diaries (database developer in Kansas) and I’m so impressed by her work ethic, vegan cooking skills, how much she lives below her means and general togetherness. I reflect on my own questionable habits but try hard not to shame myself as it does me no good.
11am- J. wakes up and we go out to run some errands. We return a few items at H&M and stop by Whole Foods for groceries to pick up harissa, which they unfortunately didn’t have. I attempt to do my weekly grocery shopping there but couldnt bring myself to do it with the prices. We get just the immediate essentials, salad mix, cucumber, carrots, some beef chuck on sale, Oatlys oat milk and VanLeeuwen earl grey ice cream. ($45)
1pm- We’re so hungry! I fry up 2 eggs and eat it with salad and TJ’s chimichurri rice, J. gets chipotle.
2 pm- Today is meal prep day! I take the beef chuck and braised half of it along with onions, carrots, celery and cremini mushrooms on stove top. I whipped up garlic mash potatoes on the side with a sprinkle of shredded cheese. It takes all day but it’s satisfying seeing raw ingredients browning and caramelizing.
4pm- Finally wrap up the the closet decluttering job I started out for 3 weeks earlier. My summer clothes have been sprawled out on the couch for so long and now it’s time to swap to fall clothes, oops.
5:30pm- Braised beef turned out delicious and the sauce/ color developed nicely overtime. J. ask the butcher for too much beef (he really loves his meat..) and I know if we don’t braise the second half today, it’s going to go to waste or forgotten in the freezer. I get to work on a different braised beef recipe with carrots, potatoes + onions and set it in the oven. I also toss brussel sprouts and cubed sweet potatoes to roast along side for DIY grain bowls.
9pm- Meal prepping turned out to be an all day albeit delicious affair. I’ve been snacking and taste testing throughout the day as I cook, no need for dinner tonight. I have 2 spoons of the earl grey ice cream I bought earlier, it’s delicious!! I'm really excited for all the food neatly packed away in the fridge, it'll be a good upcoming food week.
Reflections
· I was most likely on too little calories with IF, I have a hard time eating massive meals. I also really, truly love food, I’m once again reminded restricting doesn’t work for me. J. on the other hand found it incredibly easy and plans to keep up with it.
· I’m incredibly lucky to have amazing friends who enjoy exercising, having a supportive circle who are consistent about working out keeps me motivated in ways I’ve never managed alone. Exercising has improved my energy level so much in ways caffeine, teas claiming random benefits, supplements, etc never did, it’ll always be a priority from now on!

Zero Waste Hair Care Guide for Black (or really curly) Hair

Here's everything I use/have tried and some good stores to find ZW Hair Care. I have curly, 4C Hair that gets extremely dry. These products are all cruelty free and I believe vegan save some honeybee products. I've starred the products made by black women owned small businesses!
Shampoo Bars
I use the Lush Avocado Co-Wash shampoo bar, the price is pretty steep, but it works really well on my hair and lasts months. Still, I probably will not buy it in the future because of the price. I plan on trying out some other makers.
Conditioners/Moisturizers
Because I use Co-Wash, a shampoo conditioner, I typically don't use conditioner in the shower. I moisturize my hair with a DIY conditioner.
Detangling Spray
I use a DIY detangling spray. I don't exactly have a recipe. It's water with coconut oil, jojoba oil, castor oil, and a bit of rose essential oil for the smell. Likely the most important ingredients are coconut and jojoba oil, so I'd say the rest are optional. I store it in a repurposed Carol's Daughter spray bottle.
Styling Tools
I use an old hair pick of my dad's and a brush I've had forever and typically do not use any other styling tools, but I've found some options online.
General Resources
BLK + GRN is an awesome company that sells black owned and sustainably minded personal care products! They have a whole hair care section.
The Kind Journey on YouTube often posts about her Zero Waste hair care routines and products

Tell me about your routines/favorite products below and I'll add them to this post!!!

DIY Moisturiser/soap bar advice

I am in the process of reducing plastics/waste at home and I have been looking for a decent moisturiser bar and soap bar. I have allergies and find most of the ones for sale online from zero waste shops contain almond oil which I cannot use. I then looked into DIY recipes and I have purchased raw cocoa butter and Shea butter, two ingredients my skin loves. I was thinking of trying a mix with olive oil and some lavender depending on the cocoa scent from the butter. Please could anyone advise or share their experience with making moisturiser or soap? I have no idea where to start with soap (lye sounds scary!) Any recipes would be greatly appreciated!

DIY Lip Balm (NO WAX NEEDED)!

This is how you can make your own diy lip balm at home made without beeswax only using raw shea butter.
You need to melt 1tbsp shea butter (double boiling) when butter is still hot, move on adding 1 tsp castor oil (natural preservative and recommended oil to prevent chapped lips) mix a little bit.
Add the pinch of cocoa powder (you don't need to add this if you don't like it) stir well until the liquid turns brown and then add 5 drops of your favorite oil (mine is peppermint also goes along with coco).
This recipe is enough for two containers (small ones), air dry for a minimum of 2 hours. Enjoy!

DIY Lotion /Face cream - help with begginer questions - long

Hi everyone! I posted here some weeks, after having tried some DIY recipes and loving it. So far, I have only done oil based products (with one phase), but I am really interested in trying some other things now!
The problem is, I get the general idea of a basic recipe, f.ex, to make a lotion for face and hands. But when I actually try to find a recipe I get results with way more ingredients than I want to buy, that I cant find, or that are not needed to actually make a successfull lotion.
So I was wondering if you could help me with my first recipe, to make sure I have the hang of it =) Im reading conflicting things (only destiled water vs. any water) and want your expertees
I want to make something that I can use in my hands and face, so not too runny but not to tick either.

Water phase:
Oil Phase
Cool down phase
Does this make sense? Im guessing the more of one I add, the more I take of the oils percentage right? When it says a recipe takes 2-8% Olivem1000, how do I decide how much? At the moment, I am thinking "go for the middle one", as I have no idea how these products work or react.

I have another product from The Ordinary which is a Vitamin C Suspension 23 % + HA Spheres 30, could I had this at any point?

Setup: Asmodus C4 RDA, 0.45 ohm Alien clapton coil, 45 watt power
Testing: LB Lava Cake (discontinued version) 6% & LB Lava Cake (new formula) 6% diluted with 80/20 3mg UnJuice by kindground (Essential Depot VG/PG + CNT PG-based 100mg/ml freebase nicotine from Liquid Barn (LB). Steeped 5 days.
Background: The original LB Lava Cake has been discontinued and replaced with a new formulation. Inquiring minds want to know, what's the difference?
Notes: There are some variances in opinion or perception regarding what LB Lava Cake used to taste like, as you can see in these reviews by: mlNikon, ConcreteRiver, and Tamachicken.
FWIW, I never really got a full cake out of the old one, it pretty much tastes like hot fudge sundae topping with just the barest touch of something that might be cake. So, the stuff that comes oozing out of a Lava Cake, with barely any of the cake itself clinging to it. The hot fudge sundae topping-type flavor had just a very slight Tootsie Roll-ish quality that fortunately could easily get lost in a mix, but even as a single flavor Lava Cake was actually really good under the circumstances. The circumstances being that it’s a chocolate flavor, so it could have easily been so much worse. No gross band-aid flavor or anything like that.
The new version is very different, you can even look at it and see how different it is. It tastes more like light, fluffy chocolate cake, not especially heavy or rich, more like a chocolate Angel Food Cake than a Devil's Food Cake. Not as chocolatey as a real chocolate cake either, like an under-chocolated chocolate angel food cake. So all of the previous recipes that rely on LB Lava Cake are DEAD. There’s no way this works as a substitute, it’s way too different. Just absolutely dead. Pour one out for my homies.
In terms of off-notes, still not bad whatsoever for a chocolatey flavor. I thought it seemed maybe a little perfumey on the first hit or two, but after that, no. Just under-chocolated fluffy chocolate cake that’s also a little undercooked. It has a little bit of a raw flour taste to it, like cake batter has, and the tiniest bit of a raw cocoa flavor as well. Enough of both that if you found the right chocolate to add it to make it chocolately enough, you could easily make a chocolate cake batter vape out of it without any of the cake batter flavors.
Throat hit: None.
Usage suggestions: If you want to vape a chocolate cake using this, I would recommend something to make it richer, like a butter flavor or a touch of heavy custard/vanilla ice cream if you can get that to blend in. And more chocolate, obviously, and best of luck with that. And then probably another cake (JF Yellow Cake or one of the WF cakes, for example) or other bakery flavor (CAP Sugar Cookie?) to keep from burying the bakery and to cover up the some of the undercooked aspect. At that point, you're basically building a chocolate cake yourself from the ground up anyway, so I'm not convinced LB Lava Cake is necessary, though it might help quite a bit to get all those disparate ingredients to cooperate with each other.
And then if you want to vape a Lava Cake, you'll need something entirely different for the lovely goo in the center unless you've still got some of the old Lava Cake on hand and don't care about future mixers being able to mix and enjoy your recipe.
Disclaimer: 5 days is a really short steep on a bakery and this might change over time (if I had to guess, I wouldn't bet on it changing much, but it might get more cakey, bakery flavors like to come out with some steep, and less raw). I was encouraged to post this half-assed review/comparison because there's some interest in what LB has done to Lava Cake, and I happened to have a bottle of each mixed at the same time at the same concentration anyway for FOTW: Chocolate Cake.

Magic Mix

Magic Mix is so versatile. I use it all the time to make cream soups and pudding. And it works really well for Hamburger-Helper-type meals, too.
Magic Mix
2 1/3 cups non-instant, nonfat dry milk (probably about 3 cups for instant nonfat dry milk)
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup flour
Combine all in a large bowl with a pastry blender or wire whisk. Mix until crumbly, like cornmeal. Store in the refrigerator.
And here is the White Sauce. I've never even used it alone. But I figure it's there for a reason.
White Sauce Yields: 8 oz
2/3 cup Magic Mix
1 cup water
In a saucepan combine Magic Mix and water. Stir rapidly over medium heat until it starts to bubble.
The real magic starts when you begin adding in other ingredients.
Vegetable Cheese Sauce Yields: 8 oz
1 1/2 cups water
3/4 cup Magic Mix
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Combine water and Magic Mix in a pot over medium high heat. Stir constantly with a whisk until it bubbles and thickens. Stir in shredded cheese until melted in sauce. Serve warm over vegetables.
Chocolate Pudding Serves: 4
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup Magic Mix
3 tablespoons cocoa
2 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine Magic Mix, sugar, and cocoa in saucepan and mix well. Add water, stir over medium heat until pudding bubbles. Add vanilla and beat. Cover and cool.
The recipes above are just starting to scratch the surface of possibilities for using Magic Mix in your daily cooking. Coming soon will be a post on how to use Magic Mix to make your own condensed cream soups, you know, like cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, cream of celery, etc.

Make your own Lip Balm REFILL! / [Made without beeswax]

Enjoy!

A Treatise on Ginger

Hello Reddit DIY Community. It is I, the long dormant lover of ginger. I was a pretty active poster for a while. I got involved in Mixer’s Club here and every once in a while, would toss a recipe or two out in the monthly thread. I violated the delicate flavor of u/ID10-T’s Longing by throwing some FLV Ginger in it and calling it Ardent. That caught his attention which in turn helped get the attention of other well known mixers. He is the Kingmaker after all.
I was invited to be a guest on the Ginger episode of Noted last summer. I had a blast. It was my first time doing a YouTube show. It was my first time doing single flavor tests. And last fyi. I got to meet Cheeba and Emily. I learned how to use Discord and a new group video chatting software. Many cherries were popped that night for me! I was picked for ginger specifically because I had submitted many mixes that included ginger in them for MC, including a ginger-mango nectar and several ginger infused cocktails. Some of our MC participants dreaded it while others dug it.
By the time the Noted episode rolled around I was participating less in MC and on Reddit. I lost my dad last spring and my mom’s Alzheimer’s has rapidly progressed over the past year. Mom lives with me and I am her primary care giver. It was getting increasingly more difficult to do anything for myself and by myself. And when she was gone on the weekends at my sister’s house, I was more inclined to crawl in bed with some Netflix or an audio book than to spend time on recipe development or being active in the community.
I had one last hurra on Mixin’ Vixens as a guest on the Maple Nut Blondie episode. I also had a blast on that show. The Vixens were great. They inspired a new recipe, which I will be sharing here, and are just a great bunch of intelligent, gorgeous lady mixers! I was looking forward to doing more shows in the future. But then I ghosted. I was still occasionally checking in with MC on Discord but mostly I was gone from the DIY community as quickly as I had come into it.
So now, I’m baaaack! Mom goes to adult daycare and I’m managing things much better now. I’ve reconnected with the folks in Mixers Club, which is now being done fully on Discord, and I just placed my first flavor order in a really long time. I’m ready to get back in the game and reclaim my throne as the ginger queen. I told Dave I wanted some ginger flair! So I am writing this post to earn it! I promised a post with at least 3 recipes with ginger in them. They are on ATF and have been for a while. But I never posted them on Reddit or shared them with the larger community. Two of them were discussed on Noted and the third was inspired by the Vixens.
[The Second Coming](https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/110026#the_second_coming_by_loonicorn)
Warm cooked pears infused with spicy fresh ginger and covered in a sweet bourbon sauce. You may even pick up a hint of chocolate sauce lightly drizzled on top.
FA Pear @ 2%
TFA Pear @ 2%
FLV Bourbon @ 0.5%
TFA Kentucky Bourbon @ 2%
NF Ginger @ 1.5%
FLV Ginger @ 0.5%
TFA Toasted Marshmallow @ 1.5%
This was created for Mixer’s Club March 2018 when the theme was St. Patty’s Day. My thought behind this was this holiday (in the US) represents a bunch of gingers getting drunk. I’m not above using a flagrant stereotype to ensure my mixes match the theme! With that said, this reads as a dessert vape, not a beverage vape. It may not have started that way, but that’s where it ended up. It was inspired by Coop’s famous Kiwi Bourbon but turned into what it says in my description.
I chose TFA and FA Pears because they just work well together. Neither quite gives a satisfying pear experience on its own, but together they are perfect!
TFA Kentucky Bourbon is delicious on its own but I wanted a little more realism in my bourbon sauce, so I added the FLV for a hint of charred flavor.
NF Ginger is really excellent if you want a crisp, fresh ginger flavor. It’s well rounded, spicy, and delicious. FLV Ginger is my favorite. I even like it solo. It’s there to support the NF and add its own unique flavor that I can’t seem to get enough of. Don’t like your mix? Add some FLV Ginger to it and it’ll be great!
TFA Toasted Marshmallow ties everything together, gives the pears a cooked flavor and works some kind of voodoo with Kentucky Bourbon that is simply magical.
What about that chocolate note in the description? No clue! I kept getting some extra flavor that I couldn’t identify. It wasn’t off in the sense of bad, but something was there I couldn’t put my finger on. I vaped it for a week while trying to write the description and finally just wrote the first sentence of the description and called it good. Dave is the one who identified it as chocolate. So I added a sentence to the description after he reviewed it and called it done!
As for the name, The Second Coming is the title of my favorite poem by Irish poet Yeats. Let’s face it, naming a juice simply based on the description is booooring. Mixer’s Club and this sub Reddit have inspired me to be a little more creative when naming my mixes. Give this baby about 7 days for everything to come together and you’ll have a delicious bottle of juice!
[Soulsucker](https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/110753#soulsucker_by_loonicorn)
A ginger-lemonade spiked with gin with an exotic floral twist.
FA Gin @ 2%
HS Ginger @ 1%
CAP Hibiscus @ 0.5%
FA Lavender @ 0.25%
FLV Lemonade @ 3%
This was my 2nd submission for the St. Patty’s Day theme, so again, booze and ginger. This one definitely reads as a beverage vape. It is fantastic, delicious, delightful and refreshing. Don’t let those crazy ingredients fool you. It defies description though I did my best! It is absolutely unique. I had no clue what was going to happen. It was inspired by a cocktail recipe I found online and could never find again. The cocktail was gin and lemonade with ginger syrup, lavender syrup, and a lavender garnish. I was expecting an abomination and instead got this amazing mix. I tried a few tweaks to fine tune what I liked about it, but other attempts were unsuccessful. So this was a v1 all the way!
FA Gin is used because gin was in the cocktail recipe I found online. It’s still the only gin I have, so if it needs gin, it gets FA.
FLV Lemonade is my favorite. I just love it. I would use it exclusively if it weren’t so prone to fading. It’s a Country Time type lemonade. Would love to find a fresh squeezed lemonade flavor that I like to mix with, but so far that hasn’t happened. For now, it remains my go to for all lemonade-based recipes.
CAP Hibiscus is in there because the cocktail recipe called for ginger and lavender syrups. Hibiscus is a great flavor for adding a syrupy sweet quality, especially when working with florals.
I chose HS for the ginger because I had had luck with it before when I was trying to get a syrupy kind of ginger you might find in candied ginger. Oddly enough, it also works for bakeries. But if I want candied ginger, I reach for the HS.
FA Lavender is my only lavender flavor, so it wins!
The only downside to this is how quickly the lemonade fades. I’ve been working on creating a lemonade base that can work with everything and stand up to a long steep. I have a really good one for plain lemonade but as soon as I start adding other ingredients, it starts getting weird. It’s not just this recipe. I have a watermelon mint lemonade profile I’ve been chasing for a while. I also want to do a ginger (surprise!) and a ginger-mint lemonade. But it sends my base out of whack when I add anything.
So, here is my compromise on unleashing this to the public: This is going to fade; it’s not a deep steeper. Give it three days to blend everything together and vape it all within about 2 weeks. You could probably push the FLV Lemonade to 3.5% and get a little more time out of it. But if you push it higher or add support, you are going to ruin that unique delicious quality that comes from combining some really weird ingredients.
I called it Soulsucker cuz that’s what gingers do, being soulless themselves!
[Strawberry Blonde](https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/117419#strawberry_blonde_by_loonicorn)
A gooey maple gingerbread blondie.
TFA Bavarian Cream @ 1.5%
TFA Brown Sugar @ 0.75%
TFA Butter @ 0.5%
CAP Cake Batter @ 0.75%
FA Cookie @ 1%
FLV Ginger Snap @ 0.5%
CAP Gingerbread @ 2%
FA Maple Syrup @ 1.5%
JF Yellow Cake @ 2%
HS Ginger @ 0.25% (Optional)
As I mentioned, I was a guest on Mixin’ Vixens when they mixed their Maple Nut Blondie recipes. I mixed [this](https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/113664#e_sploded_by_loonicorn) recipe for the show. It was a traditional blondie and pretty darn tasty for a v1. Emily and Rin were already privy to my ginger obsession (Emily from Noted and Rin from MC), so one of these geniuses suggested I do a gingerbread blondie! So the crazy ginger lady got right to work.
The blondie: A blondie is similar to a brownie except instead of cocoa or chocolate, it’s loaded with brown sugar, butter, and, often, maple. Nuts are optional. I included them in my E’Sploded recipe but thought it was too much for an already complex profile with the gingerbread added. Blondies and brownies are sort of half cake and half cookie. So, I used FA Cookie for the cookie, JF Yellow Cake for the cake, and CAP Cake Batter to blend them into a gooey concoction. TFA Brown Sugar and Butter were included to carry that true to blondie flavor. I probably could have left the maple out with the nuts but I really loved the FA Maple in E’Sploded so I kept it in there.
The Gingerbread: CAP Gingerbread is the star of the show here. It takes our traditional blondie profile and makes it more special. But I also wanted to include some of the dark molasses flavor common to a good gingerbread. Enter FLV Ginger Snap. I kept it low. It’s dark as sin and you have to shake the hell out of it. When you look at the bottom of the bottle before shaking, it looks like the bottle is black plastic! Anyway, it supports the Gingerbread and adds a nice molasses finish.
TFA Bavarian Cream is there to blend the two main profiles together, keep the mix from being too dry, and support the maple so it doesn’t disappear.
The recipe is excellent as it is. But much like Christopher Walken always wants more cowbell in the SNL Blue Oyster Cult skit, I think everything needs more ginger! Without it the cinnamon note from the gingerbread portion overpowers the ginger. And I can’t have that! I tried a few different gingers at a few different percentages and landed on HS at 0.25%. I also liked it at 0.5%, but unless you are obsessed with all things ginger, 0.25% is where it’s at.
So, there you have it, my gingerbread blondie recipe I call Strawberry Blonde despite the fact that it does not contain or taste like strawberry in any way shape or form. Give it about 10 days to lose the dryness.
So, do I deserve some ginger flair? Have I earned it yet? Do I need to finalize my ginger-mango candy recipe first? I dunno. Tell me what you think! Am I even a ginger? Hmmm. Am I? Technically I think I’m a golden blonde with a hint of strawberry. But in the right light, the right clothes, etc., I can totally pass for a ginger. Plus, the skin tone is ALL ginger…freckles, sunburn, and the whole nine yards. Do I have a soul? Have I ever sucked any souls? That is for the community and the Kingmaker to decide.

[Skin Concerns] Dry cracked skin on sides/knuckles

[Skin Concerns] Dry cracked skin on sides/knuckles
...of my thumb, first and middle finger of both hands.
https://preview.redd.it/ohhzteq3pti31.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=176b59a95270b5c42299cba0c49104a14cd1e884
I've had this condition for probably about 5 yrs now. Had a GP (UK based) prescribe steroid cream and a general moisturiser, both of which had limited effects. Polysporin was pretty good as it'd dry quickly and hold the moisture well. They'd hold off the symptoms for a few hours but unless I'm applying religiously every day it just reverted to this. After a while I found it just too much of a pain (have to wait for 20 minutes or so for the cream to absorb), and limited actual long term success, I just gave up and don't bother.
This may have been brought on by exposure to some sanitising acids I was using in homebrewing. I've since made sure I'm wearing gloves if in contact with them. The condition remains.
They don't really itch, just give me a little bit of pain if the cracking gets bad. If I'm working with my hands a lot, they'll get much dryer. The skin is quite weak around here and pierces easily. In the Summer it's a little better than the Winter but I've been told this is down to just seasonal weather patterns.
I'm very keen to understand what folks might think of this, and how best to treat it. My GP has only a rough idea, and won't refer me to a dermatologist until I've tried "a dozen or so different prescription creams". Seems a bit ridiculous if I have to go and visit him another 10 times just to get to speak to a specialist. If nothing turns up here, I'll probably have to go private, which is expensive in the UK, and a bit of a crapshoot.
General diet is pretty good, almost every meal is cooked by ourselves i.e. no takeaway stuff or ready meals. Have a reasonable amount of probiotics in diet (kombucha, yoghurt, some veg ferments) as well as B12 - I'm not vegan. Stress levels have been moderate over the last few years so I'm not ruling that out. Was diagnosed with lichen planus some years back but it's not like any of the symptoms I had, and not prone to outbreaks.
Recently discovered DIY skincare, so I'd be interested to know if anybody has any recommendations regarding oils or creams to repair the skin here. When the ingredients arrive, I'll be making some of this shea body butter. I've been treating face and hands most recently with Ren Skin oil which definitely works on the face, and a beeswax/cocoa/coconut formulation (also from Humblebee) which has had some limited success.
[Edit: thanks for folks' input here. Will be interesting to try these and I'll feed back if I have any success. Will be the shea butter (recipe levels are below photosensitizing if you read the intro) first try, then if there's no joy, I'll try some of the other options]

On DIY (and cost versus benefit in general)

In my last post, I had the audacity to suggest that people think about their actions and take responsibility for the consequences of them. At least one person agreed (and, of course, many disagreed), so I thought I would speak a bit more on DIY in general.
I once heard an intriguing idea for a diet. You can have whatever you want. You want cookies for dinner? Fine. You can have a cookie dinner and pie for dessert, with a heaping bowl of ice cream before bed and candied pecan waffles for a midnight snack. There's only once catch; you have to make everything yourself, from scratch, by hand. You have to grind the wheat to make the waffles. You have to churn that ice cream, roll out that pie crust, and candy those pecans.
Think you'd lose weight? I do. I have a grain mill, and I grind wheat by hand. More for exercise than for any other benefits, really. This is one of the benefits that DIY can provide. When you understand how much labor, how much energy and how many resources, it takes to ACTUALLY make something, you start to truly understand its cost. Sure, butter is delicious. Do you have ANY IDEA what it takes to actually make butter? If you did, you'd spread it a bit thinner on your morning crumpet. DIY puts you closer to the product; when done properly (and that's crucial!!!), it puts you closer to the actual production.
So is there "bad" DIY? Of course. Sometime, go out and shop for a kit to make X. It really doesn't matter what. You can buy a kit to make lemon chicken for dinner, for God's sake. Little individual sachets of lemon juice and rosemary, everything all nice and tidy in its excess packaging. Maybe you want to make bitters yourself; you're a hip person who drinks cocktails with friends who giggle while talking about current events, right? So you buy the bitters kit. A dozen ingredients, each pre-measured in their little plastic envelopes. You tip them all into a jar (the same jar, and they all could have been in the same packet), add some vodka, and strain it into those classy little brown bottles a month later. So artisinal!
Except not. You didn't pick or curate the ingredients. It made no difference what was in those little sachets; you just paid extra for a boatload of extra packaging to get some bitters that, frankly, are at best on par with the stuff you can just buy in a bottle. But you got to wait a month extra!
Again, there is a LOT of great DIY out there. Really, there is. And the best of it can save you money, too. Maybe you start saving old, torn clothing and sit down one evening to cut it all into squares for shop rags. Excellent! The scraps can be tied dog toys (tip of the hat that I don't wear to u/Sienna57, whose permission I failed to get before mentioning him/heit, and who for all I know wants nothing to do with me). Do you buy a lot of cosmetics? Well, you could stop using cosmetics, but that's another long, preachy post. But have you considered the DIY route? Cocoa, arrowroot powder, beet juice; these things can be bought in bulk and combined very easily into a wide array of products (which, again, you don't need. I promise. I really, really promise). It sure does suck trying to find a place that recycles toothpaste tubes; in about five minutes, a few basic ingredients, bought in bulk, can make a tooth powder that blows any commercial product out of the water.
Just THINK. What are the costs? How much trash are you making? Is the result better than what you could buy? And not just in terms of quality. If Dr. Bronner's soap company can make better soap with less energy and materials than you can, maybe it's best to leave it to them. But if the local bakery charges $6 for a decent loaf of bread, and you find the artisan bread in 5 minutes a day recipe feasible...well, maybe making your own for a quarter a loaf makes sense. For you AND the environment.

DIY Body Butter Made With Cacao Butter

It’s getting cold out and if you’re like me, your skin is dreading it! I tend to get very dry skin in the winter, it’s not fun. and I needed a solution from those toxic store products and last year I came up with a way to keep my precious cocoa brown skin, silky smooth. Even when it’s so cold outside. After researching natural ingredients (always natural) I started to experiment with different ingredients and after trial and error, Ureka! I developed a recipe that has helped me and I know could help others.
What’s important to have in your body butter?
To make a successful body butter it’s best to have ingredients with key components. The most important components are to use a cream based butter (cocoa, cacao, or shea are the best), use natural oils that are high in Vitamin E, and not to add ingredients that might be counterproductive, something that may dry out the ingredients meant to replenish and moisture size the skin.
The DIY body butter I have created can be used on your face, hair, feet, and body. It’s a wonderous beauty product.

Supplies

– Wooden spoon– Ceramic bowl– Measuring cups– Glass jar or BPA free plastic container– Spatula or wooden spoon

Ingredients

– 1 Cup of Cacao Butter Raw and Unrefined
– 1/4 cup of Jojoba Oil
– 1/4 cup of Castor Oil
– 1/4 cup of Frankincense oil
– Optional. Add a few drops of Rose or Lavender oil.
Step 1.Measure out 1 cup of cacao butter ( cacao is better to use because it isn’t as processed as cocoa is. It retains more of its rich antioxidants that are helpful to our bodies.)Soften the cacao butter with any heating method you prefer. I use two pots, 1 large and 1 small to make a double boiler and heat the butter for a short time.
Step 2.
Mix melted cacao butter with the jojoba oil, frankincense oil, and castor oil. Mix well together so all is blended perfectly into one lovely batch.
Step 3.
Refrigerate for a couple of hours to harden. Then let it sit out for a little bit.
Step 4.
Add a few drops of your favorite scent and Whisk it up, baby! Use the hand method or the beater. I prefer the hand method with a wooden spoon.
Step 5.
Put contents into a jar and you are ready to smooth it all over.
Some people may find it greasy but if you take a little time and pressure to massage it into your skin, it’s magickal and therapeutic for you.
Give this recipe a try and let me know what you think. This DIY body butter is quick and easy to make. Enjoy and let’s take great care of ourselves.

LB Vanilla Ice Cream

Disclaimer: I didn't pay for these, they were sent to me by Liquid Barn. Shout out to Liquid Barn
Setup: Recoil w/ flavor barrel, Dual 15 wrap 26g 3mm Nifethal 70 coils @.14 ohms. 60w power, 450F temp limit. Full Cotton Wicks.
Testing: Liquid Barn Vanilla Ice Cream, 6 and 11% @ 1g/ml, 60/40 VG/PG base, Steeped 39 days.
Flavor Description: Rich ice cream base with a prominent, bright vanilla.
It's definitely an ice cream. Heavy, rich, and with some serious buttery notes. Feels pretty rich and full fat. A heavier base with moderate butter notes and a store brand ice cream middle. Sweeter cream, without any real prominent funky dairy notes to mess with it. Liquid barn suggests using this as a custard substitute, but it doesn't really have the heavy eggy notes you'd look for in a custard.
There's a good deal of vanilla in here. It's a very bright, commercial type of vanilla instead of a darker, spicier vanilla bean. It doesn't have much in the way of depth, but it does have a slightly malty kind of note to it like DIYFS Holy Vanilla. At higher percentages, that malt comes out quite a bit more and gets almost a dry cocoa type of flavor. The brightness and lack of nuance kind of makes me think of a cheaper ice cream, but it works pretty well for the profile. I get just the tiniest hit of a black pepper in the top notes for the vanilla, but it's pretty subtle even at the suggested 11%. It does however seem to get a bit dry that high (at least solo), almost like you've got too much ethyl vanillin going on.
This has a really nice, thick texture to it. It's a heavier flavor overall, with a really solid density to the base. Like most of the liquid barn creams, it feels just a bit thin in the middle, but it's by far the least thin of all their creams I've tried. It's more just normal thick in the middle compared to that crazy thick base. Also pretty sweet overall. Doesn't go full frosting sweet, but it's sort of an un-nuanced sweetness without anything dark to it, just sugary.
I'm a hard, hard black pepper taster with TPA VBIC, this seems to be a fairly effective substitute without the vast majority of the black pepper... at least for me, steeped at relatively high percentages. I pick up just a bit of a peppery edge to this with extended vaping, but it's nothing close to TPA. I don't have a ton of VBIC-style experience, but this noticeably richer than FW and CAP. It's maybe a bit richer down low than TPA, but thinner in the middle and with less of a distinct butter taste.
Also, this one probably isn't for the Low DAAP crowd.... it has a truly impressive 35,000ppm Acetyl Propinoyl. Hats off, that's almost obscene. The component list for TPA's VBIC lists AP as under 3%... so that one is mostly likely between 20,000-30,000 ppm... so maybe it's not so crazy after all. That's part of the issue with being a company that actually publishes it's information, it leaves you open for special scrutiny. So shout out to Liquid Barn for having their DAAP testing publicly available, even if I did literally LOL when I saw that.
Off-flavors: Flavor gets just a hair thin in the middle. Some drier malty, almost black pepper or cocoa, notes up top vaped solo.
Throat Hit: Light. The top end of this gets a bit harsh and dry solo, but it's nothing major and the base is smooth.
Percentage testing: At 6% this is pretty solid. Vanilla is pretty much on point for a vanilla ice cream, with that bright if slightly cheap tasting fairly one-dimensional vanilla. Base is already fairly thick but the middle feels just a bit thin. No real off notes.
At 11% the middle of this flavor has filled out quite a bit. The base is downright heavy, and the middle is pretty solid for an ice cream. Vanilla is starting to go malty and I'm getting just a bit of black pepper here. Vanilla might actually be a bit too prominent and I'm getting some dryness.
Liquid barn suggests mixing with this at 11%, and honestly it works pretty well up there. I feel like the top notes get a bit too malty, but nothing chemical or weird. Just based on these tests, I'd probably be using it around 8% as an ice cream base or around 5% as a cream component in a mix. Just looking at published recipes, plenty of people are using it lower in the 3-4% range for their bases, and while that could work for some richness I feel like the flavors relatively flat and lacking some of the charm down there. I don't know... do what you want.
Uses & Pairings: Well, it's a vanilla ice cream, so basically use this in 1 ouf of every 3 published recipes. Should work well as a TPA VBIC sub for the pepper tasters out there, albeit at about 1.5-2x in terms of percentage. Use either as an ice cream base, or as a thicker, richer cream element that doesn't taste like a whipped cream.
The mighty ID10-T has done a lot of futzing with this that I've gotten ahold of through mixer's club, and his trick seems to be mixing this with some HS Ice Cream to fill it out. Seems to be a pretty good trick to deal with that bit of thinness in the middle.
Second Opinions: This one is pretty darn popular.
Here's the ELR Page. There is a fair number of notes on there, all fairly positive. Take your pick, basically.
Not sure who the original poster but both "A.D.V." and "Mirabella" write: "tested at 7% with a 3 day steep. best ice cream ive found so far! No pepper taste like TPA's, no overly dairy'd note like CAP's, no powdery texture like molin's, no coffee creamer taste like FW's, and no muskyness like HS's! yes, i have tried them all. its like a cross between the best parts of TPA's and CAP's but with a bit more sweeteness. good enough to be vaped solo at 7%. contains acetoin but is so worth it! very forward on the vanilla flavor-its not too strong but i would be cautious adding another vanilla. perfectly sweet but would really shine with 1% sucralose. just a little lacking on the milk aspect so could use some help from FA cream fresh 0.5-1%, however, it has a nice butter flavor on the end. is quite a bit lighter than the other offerings so if substituting add few percent more. no chemical flavors or off notes and the mouthfeel is really smooth (in this test i caught just a bit of harshness on the top but is for sure the 6% nic i am using. mixes with anything. highly recommend 5/5! my new go to for everything ice cream."
User "RinVapes" adds: "tastes like straight up vanilla ice cream... not vanilla bean ice cream... just vanilla ice cream. works well with other creams. no pepper note like the one i get from TFA VBIC. however I will say this one is not as sweet "
And one more from user "Silhouette" that's a bit more measured: "I know my palate is an oddball, but this comes off just a smidgen empty for me. I smells and taste what seems like French Vanilla Deluxe, TPA Custard, a heavy butter and cream. It has no real discernible pepper smell or taste, but smells quite similar to TPA VBIC. I'm a pepper taster, and I'm glad this doesn't have it, although I find Hangsen FVIC to be a more rich, while this is more buttery.."
Liquid Barn's product page. Their description: "Our Vanilla Ice Cream is a delicious creamy treat. Also makes for a great custard substitute." Liquid barn suggested mixing percentage is 11%. It's 86% PG.

Vape Train Devon Cream

Disclaimer: I didn't pay for this, shoutout to Vape Train for sending this to me.
Setup: Recoil w/ flavor barrel, Dual 12 wrap 24g 3.5mm SS316 @.32 ohms. 60w power, 450F temp limit. Full Cotton Wicks.
Testing: Vape Train Devon Cream, 1%, 4% and 8%, 60/40 VG/PG base, Steeped 41 days.
Flavor Description: Thick full cream, with a not insignificant amount of cocoa and some lemon.
So, devon cream is basically just a clotted cream with an absurdly high milkfat percentage, and this mostly delivers. Thick, full mouthfeel. Fairly authentic, slightly sour dairy notes. This is pretty well steeped by this point, but the dairy notes don’t taste too butyric or funky. Seems like a pretty authentic sweeter cream. Moderate, warm buttery richness to the vape. Slightly sweet, but nothing that really pulls if off a cream profile.
But there’s some chocolate to this. Feels a bit too pleasant to call it an off flavor, but I’m not sure it’s supposed to be here. Tastes like a pretty middle of the road cocoa flavor, but the richness and sweetness of the cream flavor is giving this a bit of milk chocolate vibe. Not an overwhelming chocolate, but it shows up pretty clearly in mixes. I get it the most on the back half of the exhale, and seems to linger with those dairy notes. Fairly light straight vanilla taste, but It may be getting lost in the chocolate here. The thicker, richer dairy and those cocoa notes actually come across a lot like a chocolate milkshake, but there is an odd sort of tartness to it.
Beyond the cream and the chocolate, I think I also get a bit of lemon. Seems show up both mixed low before the cream really fills out, and then comes back again at higher percentages. Kind of reminds me of that lemon-y note in FA Custard. It’s not unpleasant or a super aggressive pledge type lemon, but it’s noticeable at 4% and ramps up a bit from there.
Off-Flavors: Fairly prominent chocolate accent. Something lemony at higher percentages.
Throat Hit: Nah, really smooth overall.
Percentage testing: At 1%, this is still relatively fulls but the flavor seems a bit muted. Lighter cream, decent amount of cocoa and that lemony tartness.
At 4%, this is working pretty well. Feels thick, those cream notes are coming through pretty clearly. Cocoa isn’t completely overbearing but it’s definitely there. Lemon seems like the most manageable here.
At 8%, nothing really off but doesn’t feel that much thicker or richer than 8%. Maybe a bit more chocolate, and that lemon has come back around for me.
Vape train suggests mixing with this at 5-10%. That’s probably on the high end for me. Just based on these tests, I’d be around 5% with this as a primary flavor, but this could actually work as an accent or basic thick texturizer around 2%.
Uses & Pairings: This is a really solid flavor but it may end up being a fairly specialized tool. This isn’t just a straight cream base and I don’t think you’ll be able to really mix around that chocolate kind of note and you’ll have to watch out for that lemon tartness.
Without that tartness, I’d say this is already most of the way to a chocolate milkshake. It could use a bit of maltiness from a low percentage of FW Hazelnut or something, but it’s really close. But then that lemon kind of smacks me in the face a little bit.
You could kind of deal with that lemony thing by adding a fresher brighter fruit like berries that won’t completely clash with a chocolate.
I don’t know, maybe y’all will get less chocolate than I do.
Second Opinions: Not much out there through the google machine.
Here is the product page from Vape Train. Their description: “a thick, buttery cream that’s slightly sweet and perfect for your next e-liquid recipes. This flavour can add a creamy note that’s buttery with a consistency similar to soft butter. You could find yourself adding these to bakery & dessert style recipes that require a more of a buttery yet creamy texture of that found in a devonshire clotted cream.” But cocoa, bruh.

FA Hazelnut / Hazel Grove

Setup: Recoil w/ flavor barrel, Dual 15 wrap 26g 3mm Nifethal 70 coils @.17 ohms. 60w power, 450F temp limit. Full Cotton Wicks.
Testing: FA Hazelnut @ %1, 60/40 VG/PG, Steeped 14 days.
Flavor Description: Nutty raw hazelnuts with a bit of a praline sweetness and a light metallic twinge on the backend. The nut flavor is actually surprisingly dead on to hazelnuts, giving you that almost nutella thing, as opposed to the creamy, maltier FW Hazelnut. Super strong, but useful as a mixer to bolster other nuts or a sort of non-specific raw nut at a lower percentage.
Inhale is fairly dense and nutty. Definitely leans towards a "greener" tasting kind of nut like raw almonds or hazelnuts. A little sweeter than you'd expect for raw nuts, but the sweetness fits pretty well. Kind of a cream sweetness, without any of the dairy. Sweetness kind of builds and takes over on the inhale, getting a bit metallic toward the end. Exhale has a pretty dead-on hazelnut up-front, with that praline sweetness comes through on the back half of the exhale. I can taste just a bit of buttery richness in there along with the sweetness. If you told me this was a praline flavor, I'd totally believe you at 1%. Sweetness isn't overbearing, but it's there. Again, moderately dense. Most of the nuttiness here is front-loaded. Tail end of the exhale picks up a bit of a metallic taste, almost like smelling change.
Off-flavors: Gets a bit metallic on the inhale and towards the very back of the exhale. Not a deal-breaker or anything, but it's there.
Throat Hit: Light. That praline sweetness is just a bit sharp.
Uses & Pairings: I like using this for a bakeries as a truer nut flavor. It tends to layer well with a drier base, sitting on top. I used it in my Dogma recipe for exactly that purpose, simulating a slivered almond.
My other personal favorite pairing with this is FLV Red Burley. It really seems to pop the drier cocoa notes in tobaccos and get downright chocolately with bringing in any waxy mouthfeel. Should work well any non-ashy tobaccos to reinforce nutty character and add some pretty mellow cocoa notes for more a dessert tobacco vape.
This is also damn near perfect for mixing with a deeper chocolate to give you more a nutella vibe. Mixes well with lighter creams. My favorite is FLV Cream. Gives it a lightly sour note and plays well with the light spice to give you a fairly realistic fresh milk flavor.
I'm not a huge fan of mixing this with fruits solo, the flavors just don't blend all the way
Notes: S&V Concentration testing, this is potent stuff. I get a pretty neutral but pronounced nuttiness at .25%. Fairly non-specific this low, but it definitely reads as nutty. I've used the relative dryness and distinct nutty taste here to layer in a discrete almond sliver. .5% is ramping it up a bit, and the nuttiness is starting to come in clear as hazelnut. .75% is getting sweeter, with that praline kind of note coming in pretty strong. 1% is starting to be dominated by that praline sweetness, and by 1.5% this concentrate just seems too strong and blown out. I'd recommend starting with this at .25% and working up for most applications. Maybe in a heavier chocolate application something like .5%. I don't see a ton of use for this above 1%.
The biggest question here is how the compares to the more widely used FW Hazelnut, and honestly they don't have a lot of overlap. FW Hazelnut is great, but it doesn't do a great job of actually evoking discrete halzelnuts. It's more a hazelnut cream. This is definitely a nut, and as such is pretty interesting. The off-notes get a little weird at anything above .5%, but under that it's a pretty useful ingredient that will give you a sweeter type of raw nut flavor without pushing the rest of your mix around too much.
Second Opinions:
Here are your HIC notes, farily solid this time:
"In my opinion, this is the single most accurate nut flavor that any manufacturer produces. It's the flavor of hazelnuts without the papery brown skin. This is an excellent flavor to add to your chocolate candy bar recipes.FA Hazelnut carefully mixed with acetyl pyrazine (plus Caramel and other accents) can give the impression of peanut butter. In dessert and coffee recipes, even 0.25% can add sufficient hazelnut flavor for most vapers. It's excellent for hazelnut coffee. If you're looking to add nutty notes to tobacco, you might prefer FA Nut Mix instead of this distinctive hazelnut flavor."
Some quick mentions on the sub here and here. General consensus is is nutty, strong, and accurate.
HIC actually nails the difference on a VU forum post: "Obviously a huge different in strength. Take away the sweet and cream from FW, make it a more accurate flavor, strengthen it x10 or more, and you have FA Hazelnut. The two are not interchangeable."
