casino holdem rules - win

The Barterer's Lounge. A Short Story.

I walked in and was immediately awestruck by the ornate interior of the best casino in the world, The Barterer’s Lounge. Some players were walking around with suits and escorts while other people looked like they had not eaten for days. My cohorts? Adam, Bart, Carl, David, and Erin. We decided to have a seat at a “Texas Holdem” table with someone waiting to play. This guy looked like he had just snorted cocaine, after a 2 day bender on whiskey, but hey, “When in Rome” right? Weird thing is, this guy was in a suit and had five escorts. Five! Judging by the sheer boredom of his lady friends, this dude clearly hasn't left this table in over eight hours.
The table seats six and the rules are very clear. At a new table: The only buy-in is allowed once at the beginning of the game. But you don’t have to pay the fifteen dollar entry fee in cash or otherwise until the end of the game. If you go out, only then do you have to pay the cash. We already knew this and we had plenty of cash for a trip to the casino. Woo! Adam had been saving for, jeez, over a decade? Adam’s been family friends since as long as I can remember. Who knows how old the guy is but he’s Bart’s dad and I love them both. Carl lives next door and we do some work from home but mostly sit at home playing some consoles drinking some beer and doing neighborhood poker with David and Erin. They’re an awesome pair. We all looked at one another and visually confirmed that we had exactly fifteen dollars in cash ready for the game because once you sit down, there is no turning back. Security has a person watching every individual one to one while sitting at a table. It is kinda creepy to have someone watching over you, but hey, I know the rules.
Carl and I were already doing a visual check on this guy and figured he’s too whacked out to be a smart player in this poker game. But he can obviously afford the buy-in so we were very happy to have a few more chips to pass around between the five of us at the end of the game. “Frank, you ready?” Carl asks. “Yeah, let’s rock,” I replied. We all sat down together and the player at the table eagerly agreed to play a game with us. Once we all agreed to play together, one of the security guards powered up the dealer. The automaton started whirring up and a few sparks flew from faulty wiring that obviously hadn’t been maintained in years. But if it works for the house, it works for me.
“Sir, this is a casino,” the robot said. I replied, “Duh,” and the dealer dealt our first two private cards each. Our extra player says “Hold on a sec, I want to make a side wager. I want to put a chip in saying that the old fart loses all his money on this first hand.”
The dealer mechanically screeches “This is a side wager separate from the game’s pot.”
We all looked at each other dumbfounded. “Does this guy even know the rules of Texas Holdem?” I thought. I looked at Carl and I knew that is exactly what he was thinking too. “Yea, I’ll call that for a chip.” We all threw a chip in. But not Adam. Why would he? He still has all his chips and as long as he doesn’t do anything stupid, or even bet at all, Kevin loses that bet.
Our extra player was turning out to be a real go-getter, so I wanted to do some small-talk to bring him off the game. “Hey, My name’s Frank. Yours?”
“Kevin,” he says abruptly between the twitches of his eyelids. “Hey Kevin, nice to play with ya dude,” I reply.
Kevin immediately says, “Hold on, I’ll bet another chip that the old man goes under this hand.” Easiest call of my life. Everyone throws another chip in because old man Adam ain’t no fool when it comes to poker. All he has to do is not wager “all-in” on a losing hand and we all get a few extra chips at the end of the hand. We all toss in that chip.
“Alright let’s get on with it,” Kevin barks at the dealer. The first three cards are shown and immediately Kevin wants to do another chip that Adam goes under this hand. We all call.
I ask him, “So what do you do, Kevin?” He says with a straight face, “Well if I’m not here I’m on my jet going between my five mansions. You know what, let’s put in another chip that Ole Yeller flops on this hand.”
I knew this guy was off his rocker and we didn’t care because everyone knows we’re all good for the money or else the “barter rules” come into effect. We all had visually checked our cash before we sat down. Well I don’t actually know about Kevin but I figure he’s good for it considering his escorts had all bought themselves Wendy’s chicken tenders from the food court on Kevin’s credit card.
Play resumes and Kevin puts a few chips on the actual game of poker this time. Adam does nothing, no surprise there. But the rest of us call Kevin’s position. Who knows what each other’s dealt hands are. I only know mine. “So five mansions huh? Nice,” I say. “You do anything else for fun?”
Kevin looks at me like he wasn’t expecting such filth to speak and disgustedly replies, “Well, I like my yacht. It’s got its own docking port for a smaller yacht. So you could say I’m into water sports.” After realizing he spent even a few seconds humoring me, Kevin shouts, “Let’s do three more chips in another side pot that the old man actually literally dies during the game.”
We all chuckled pretty good at that one and threw our three chips in each. “Let’s play.” Kevin demanded. “Show the next card,” he snarled. As the card lands on the table, Kevin bets ten more chips that Adam goes all-in on a losing hand. Seeing as this is the first round of the game and we all had the same chips at buy-in, it’s a no brainer match position for 10 chips. Meanwhile Adam is stone-cold poker face and hasn’t actually put any chips in on the opening three.
“Alright 15 chips on the play,” Kevin absent-mindendly said without even looking at the card. I noticed that he hadn’t even looked at his hand because his two cards were strewn out in front of him in the original place the dealer placed them.
Everyone but Adam plays Kevin’s bet and the showdown resumes. Well, almost resumes. “And I’ll put half of my remaining chips on my initial bet that pops loses all his chips this hand,” Kevin states. And guess what we all did? We called the bet because we’re all keeping track of how many chips were initially given out and this was a no-brainer that we were all on the same pace of losing chips. Except Adam of course because he hadn’t placed any bets so far. He was ready for a few actual full games of poker. I know he had more than only the fifteen dollar pay-out fee for a single game if he lost.
“And I’ll put the rest on my other bet that the boomer literally dies during this game.” We all blankly looked at each other and threw our remaining chips on that bet. But not Adam, why would he? He’s got all his chips from not even Adam’s old but he’s not on death’s door by any means. He lifted weights professionally in his earlier years and still does cardio daily. Naturally, he doesn’t look a day over fifty.
“We have an ‘all-in’ at the table” the junkbot for a dealer said and an extra set of lights flicked on at our table. They were so bright I was getting a terrible glare from an heirloom ring I had on my finger. I rotated the rock to the inside of my finger and made a fist so the glare wouldn’t blind me.
The robot dealer plays out the last card but it doesn’t matter to Kevin or anyone else because we’re all-in. “The player who placed the initial bet shows their hand,” says the dealer.
And we all waited patiently. We sat together in silence for what seemed like forever.
Until Kevin’s casino-assigned agent realized that Kevin was too coked out to do it himself.
“A two of hearts and a seven of clubs from the initial bet maker.” The dealer continues, “There are no additional plays on the field for the bet maker. The player with the best hand wins.”
I only had a pair of three of hearts and a four of diamonds in my hand.
Carl immediately turns his cards over. “A pair of sixes with another on the table. That’s three of a kind.” We all split the earnings of the initial side bet amongst ourselves minus Adam. And since Adam still had a pulse we all split the second pot too. “This game is closed. All players must pay their cash fee for the round. If any players do not have the cash initially agreed upon to enter the game, barter rules come into effect,” the dealer said. We all reached into our pockets and put the fifteen bucks on the table. Kevin reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a ten dollar bill and a half eaten chicken tender. Kevin frantically searches his other pockets for any cash on his person. “Oh shit,” Kevin muttered as his face turned pale. “I must have spent my cash last night when I was more drunk.”
I perk up a bit because I had no idea that there was even a chance to trigger the barter rule with this guy. The dealer asks, “Do you accept the remaining payment of meat to cover the remaining five dollars of this player’s entry fee?” “Hell no!” I shouted. “I want a million bucks, and one of your houses.”
Bart finally chimes in and says, “Me too. Oh yea and I want your jet.” Carl agrees and adds “And the yacht!” David says, “Don’t forget the mini-yacht too.” Erin says, “I know you have a nice car, We’ll take that too.” Kevin slumps into his chair as the dealer asks, “Are there any other terms to this agreement?” We all looked at each other and Adam added, “And an order of tendies all around. But not for Kevin.”
That was a bad move, Kevin.

Why is Texas holdem so popular compared to other poker game variants?

In early decade of 20s and before that, 7-card stud game was the officially acclaimed popular poker game across the world. Soon, after with boom of Texas Holdem took the crown from the 7-card stud and became quite popular for both land-based and online poker rooms by the late 2000s. This game has gained popularity at such an enormous rate that today players consider it as a sport professionally.
The reason behind its brewing popularity is its ease to learn gameplay and faster turnaround time to play one hand. Texas Holdem Poker happened on one of the casino streets of Las Vegas in the late 60s. Player, bill Boyd took the responsibility of training the fellow players and since then, the Texas Holdem started spreading gradually. Soon after the Poker Boom where cable TV started streaming the poker game live transformed the poker game industry completely and now, Texas Holdem is the highly preferred poker game and its popularity is the mark for poker game development company.

Why Texas Holdem Gaining Popularity Than Other Poker Variations?

Though Texas Holdem doesn’t have any other variant in competition but Omaha Poker comes next in terms of popularity where players receive four hole cards, instead of two. The demography plays a critical role here as Americans prefer Texas there Europeans took like to Omaha. Yet, we have seen full tables for Texas Holdem in online and land-based casinos which gets often amiss in Omaha. This clearly says neither Texas Holdem poker game development nor Texas Holdem game will lose its popularity anytime soon. The reasons are as

1. Easiest poker games to learn, grasp and play.

Texas Holdem gameplay prepares the foundation of the basics of the poker game.
Though, Omaha has similar rules as Texas Holdem put but the decision to opt the two out of four hole cards makes the game exciting yet confusing, Even expert poker game developers concludes that Omaha poker game development is much more challenging than texas holdem poker game development. Few players still find seven-card stud easy where as the argument pulls this statement off is Texas Holdem comprises lesser streets and it becomes easier to determine who is going to act first on each street.

2. Texas Holdem Poker Game Has the Players of The Best-in-Class

The new players are looking to get training with strategy development to improve their poker game skills. This skill-building is evidently helpful for the games of Omaha and other poker game variants.
This is why these poker game variants comprise of great professional players which makes Texas Holdem a great gaming space for all levels of poker players from novice to veterans.

3. Texas Holdem Poker Game Development Could Become A New Trend in Gaming Industry

With the constant transformation in the poker game industry with technology, poker bot development, improved gaming experience, chat and immersive communication mediums among the pool of poker players, it seems we will be witnessing more variations in Texas Holdem poker game development.
Texas Hold’em is simply a game of plain strategy with more complexities and challenges, that allure new players to never get tired out of the game. It can be foreseen that in the coming few decades, Texas holdem poker will still be ruling over the other poker game variants.
You can also be a part of this evolving industry immediately, all you need is to buy a poker game app or rent a poker portal from the best Texas Holdem poker game development company.

Review of theDaFTA Deuces Wild Card Tournament by Tanushree Tanushri

The third chapter of the definitive Daftar Idn Poker Book is titled, "The Daftar". This is a highly detailed and technical account of all of the rules that are in play during every hand of poker. Included are a number of bonus rounds that are thrown in to up the stakes and allow players who may not be familiar with the game to get a feel for how the games are structured. It goes into detail with regard to the betting rounds and explains why certain betting choices can or cannot be made within the context of the rules of the game.
The book starts off with a short and sweet introduction of the rules. These are followed by a brief discussion of the general strategies that any game of poker should employ. Next comes a detailed look at the various types of betting that one can use and how these choices will affect the possible outcomes of a game. The chapters that follow cover everything from basic beginner strategies and opening betting to advanced betting and tournament betting.
The emphasis in this final section is on choosing the correct types of cards, remembering special betting opportunities, and how to place your bets when you are in a particularly advantageous situation. All of this is done in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to read and understand. The book then goes into discussing the basics of playing cards and how they are used in a regular deck of 52. After this, the book briefly discusses the use of the dominoes in an English version and then goes into a short discussion of the four international rules sets that are in play in the Dominoqq Poker Room. All of this is done in a very short and concise manner that does not try to cover every scenario that could possibly arise in any casino environment.
A very brief and cursory review would say that the layout of the DominoQ Online Learning System is similar to that of most online poker learning systems. However, there are some differences with the layout of the software programs used by DominoQ Online Learning System and some other poker training programs. Most programs for learning poker online will have a standard layout that includes a text editor, practice games, poker chips, the board game, and the game dealer. However, because this is the case with the software program of the DominoQ Online Learning System, the software has been designed in a way so that the layout of the cards used in the game of DominoQ is easily recognized and the players are not likely to confuse what they are looking at on the board.
In this part of the book, the authors briefly discuss principles of chance and skill. Most successful professionals of card games - including the champions of the world - have been trained on a basic set of rules known as "The ABC Way". This is an easy to understand format that informs beginners of the strategies and techniques that professional players use. This also includes information about how to play against the best players in your table and gain the upper hand.
The book includes detailed discussions on playing strategy against aggressive players, the weak hands and strong hands. It also explains the use of the capsize (the flat cap formation) in order to prevent the opponent's from betting high to take advantage of you and make a strong beginning. Another important part of the content is discussing the variations of the game, particularly the No-Limit and the Texas Holdem formats. The authors explain the reasons behind using these variants and the implications for a player who is just starting out with his or her online playing experience. Finally, they conclude their discussion of the data idn poker online Indonesia yang sun, or "rise and shine" rule.

[Repost] PlayNANO - Let's show everyone what NANO is capable off!

(sorry for this repost, more details at the end)
As some have said a couple of times in the last months, NANO is great, but it lacks a lot on adoption. There is no "Killer App" that makes users interested in NANO. It might be great, but if it's not used it won't succeed.

Introducing PlayNANO
PlayNANO it's an attempt at fixing this. On PlayNANO users will be able to earn Nano by completing all sorts of tasks; Play multiplayer games with friends and earn Nano for winning; Bet on multiple casino games; And lastly spend their Nano on all sorts of digital products. Oh and also, no account or login required!
See why Nano is the best crypto, with fee-less and instant use cases. Earn, play, bet, and spend - no account or login required.
I might not be the first doing something like this, but I'm aiming for better than what we have now.

PlayNANO's Roulette
Play the European Roulette with Nano - fee-less and instant as Crypto should be!
My favorite feature so far, a provably fair multiplayer roulette. Instant betting and very quick payouts - sometimes you even get your payout before the roulette stops spinning! (and yeah, I'm gonna leave this as a feature to showcase the power of NANO xD)
With this multiplayer roulette, you are not betting alone, you will also see other players bets on the table, for a more fun and immersive experience. And it uses a provably fair system to make sure that all numbers/spins are fair and can't be manipulated by anyone.

PlayNANO's Jumper
I've also created Jumper - a simple game with simple rules, but there's space for great strategies! Each game starts with a 12 by 12 grid, and the objective of the game is to be the last one standing on the grid, by sweeping your opponents off.
Compete with other players and earn NANO by sweeping them out of the game!
Next steps
This is the first release but I have got a lot planned for the future! Starting with a multiplayer Texas Holdem Poker feature; more games to be added to the Play section; more ways to earn Nano, and add way more prizes to the spend list.
Quick FYI: I'm using a 400$/month server, with a GPU, to handle the heavy PoW generation. Within the last month my server has sent over 45.000 transactions, mostly due to the Earn - Watch Videos feature - which is getting quite popular on Venezuela, Indonesia, and Central Africa. So I don't think I'm in love with the future v21 PoW increase xD

The end
I'm not saying PlayNANO is the "Killer App" we need, but it's something. I intend to make a living out of it and use the profits to make Nano reach more people, whether through marketing, donations to the development fund, maybe help fund the next Build-Off competition, and/or other things.
So go ahead and try it out, maybe show it to your friends to show how awesome Nano is ;)
All feedback will be much appreciated.

(Once again, for those who caught it, I'm sorry for the repost. I made this repost because last time I posted I was in a hurry, the post was not well-formatted, I made a mistake on the title, I didn't pick a good time to post, and all that made that post's exposure quite low. This is my do-over, won't do it again!)

I’ve never played against real people but want to get started. Advice?

I’ve played against computers and against dealers in various table game variations of poker. I want to start playing at the tables. Are there certain types of games I should look for as a noob? When I say types, I mean like today is “no-limit hold’em deep stack” at the local poker room.
I don’t want to annoy the table with my inexperience or mess something up for a serious player. I’ve practiced online, but people online are betting like idiots and it doesn’t seem to be a true comparison.

Texas Holdem How To Play

Texas Holdem How To Play

https://preview.redd.it/hq4qkgaltat51.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e26baaa3e8656144a74491b5727acf9647c4389
Texas Holdem how to play? Driven by the popularity of televised poker, Texas Hold’em (more commonly, ‘Hold’em’) has become the world’s most popular poker game, both in live casinos and online. We’ll go into more detail below, but here are the key points you need to know:
  • Every player is dealt two cards, for their eyes only
  • The dealer spreads five cards – three at once, then another, then another – which can be used by all players to make their best possible five-card hand
  • Before and after each card(s) is revealed, players take turns to bet. To stay in the hand and see the next card, all players must have put the same amount of chips in the pot as each other
  • The best poker hand wins the pot

Texas Holdem how to play | The Dealer Button

Once you have your players around the table the first thing you need to have is chips. The next step is picking the player who will start with the dealer button. Hold’em is played with what’s known as a rotating dealer, meaning a player will act as the dealer for one hand and then pass the role of dealer on to the player on their left when the hand is completed. To choose the dealer, either deal every player one card or spread the cards facedown on the table and have every player choose one. The player with the highest-valued card (aces are high for selecting a dealer) starts as the dealer.

The Button

If you’re in a live poker room or casino with a professional dealer (or someone volunteers to always physically deal the cards) the dealer button will still rotate around the table. Even though he or she is physically dealing the cards, for all intents and purposes the person with the button is viewed as being the dealer for the hand. Once the hand completes the player with the dealer button will pass it to the player on his or her left.

Texas Holdem how to play | The Blinds

There are two blinds in Texas Holdem – a small blind and a big blind. These are forced bets required by two players to make sure there are some chips in the pot worth playing for. Without any money in the pot all players might be inclined to fold much more often, slowing down the action considerably.
The player directly to the left of the dealer puts out the small blind. The big blind (usually double that of the small blind) is then paid by the player to the left of the small blind. The size of the blinds will dictate the stakes of the game you’re about to play. Typically, you want players to buy in for no less than 100 times the size of the big blind. If you want to buy in for $20 you should play with blinds of 10¢/20¢. For convenience, most people will play 10¢/25¢.
At a live casino or poker room the maximum and minimum amounts a player can be in for will be in relation to the blinds. For example in a $1/$2 game the table minimum is usually $40 (20x the big blind) and the maximum is $200 (100x the big blind).

Texas Holdem how to play | Rules

The person dealing the cards deals to the left of the player with the dealer button first and rotates clockwise around the table. Each player gets one card at a time until each player has two cards, both face down. These are known as your hole cards and they are for your use alone when making your final 5-card poker hand.
A round of Texas Hold’em consists of a minimum of one and a maximum of four betting rounds. A hand ends when all players but one have folded. Or the fourth (final) Texas Holdem betting round completes with multiple players still in the hand – whichever comes first.
At that point players enter into the showdown (to be explained in the next section) and the player with the highest hand takes the pot. If two players share the highest hand, the pot is split equally between them.

Texas Holdem how to play | Pre-Flop

When all players receive their hole cards you’re now in the pre-flop betting round. Each player looks at his or her cards and decides what action to take. In Hold’em only one player can act at a time. The pre-flop betting round starts with the player to the left of the big blind. This player has three options:
  • Fold: Pay nothing to the pot and throw away their hand, waiting for the next deal to play again.
  • Call: Match the amount of the big blind (pre-flop this is also known as “limping in.”)
  • Raise: Raise the bet by doubling the amount of the big blind. (Note: a player may raise more depending on the betting style being played, again see the rules for No-Limit and Pot-Limit above.)
Once a player has made their action the player to the left of them gets their turn to act. Each player is given the same options: fold, call the current bet (if the previous player raised, that is the amount you must call; if no one has bet it’s the big blind amount) or raise. In Limit Hold’em a raise is always the amount of one bet in addition to the amount of the previous bet. For example: if the big blind is 25¢ and the first player to act would like to raise they put in a total of 50¢ (the big blind + one additional bet).
If the next player would like to re-raise they would put in a total of 75¢ (the previous bet + one additional bet). Again, though, in No-Limit Hold’em a player can bet as much as the total amount of their chips on the table at any time.

Texas Holdem how to play | The Flop

nce the preflop Texas Holdem round ends, the flop is dealt. This is done by dealing the top card in the deck facedown on the table (called the “burn” card, it’s not in play), followed by three cards face-up in the middle of the table (see below). These are the community flop cards which all players can use to make their best 5-card poker hand.
Once the flop has been dealt the first post-flop betting round begins. The rules of a post-flop betting round are the same as a pre-flop with two small exceptions:
  • The first player to act is the next player with a hand to the left of the dealer
  • The first player to act can check or bet; as there has been no bet made, calling is free.
A bet on the flop in Limit Holdem is the amount of the big blind. In No-Limit it has to be at least twice the size of the big blind but can be as much as all of a player’s chips.

Texas Holdem how to play | The Turn

Once the betting round on the flop completes (meaning any players who want to see the next card have matched the value of any bets), the dealer again ‘burns” one card face-down out of play followed by a single card face-up in the middle of the table beside the 3 flop cards (see image below). Once the turn has been dealt the third betting round starts.
The third betting round in Limit Hold’em is identical to the flop betting round with one single exception: The size of a bet for this round, and the final betting round, is doubled meaning that to make a bet in our game will now cost a player 50¢. In No-Limit Hold’em a player can again bet any amount of their chips as long as it’s at least twice the big blind or double that of any previous bet.

Texas Holdem how to play | The River

Assuming more than one player is left having not folded on one of the previous streets, the river is now dealt. Dealing the river is identical as dealing the turn with one card being burned facedown followed by a single card face-up.
This is the final street and no more cards will be dealt in this hand. The final betting round is identical to the Texas Holdem round on the turn.

Showdown

Once the river betting round has been completed the players now enter into the showdown. At this point the best 5-card poker hand wins the pot. Here are the rules you need to know about a Hold’em showdown:
  • The player who bet on the river is the default first player to reveal their hand. If any other players choose to show their hand first, that is OK.
  • If no betting happened on the river (all players checked), the player closest to the left of the dealer must open their hand first, continuing clockwise around the table.
  • If a player is holding a losing hand it is their option to reveal their cards or simply muck their hand and concede the pot.

200k in the hole. Started on a camping trip

A few people asked for my story so I figured I'd share. Writing it out has been good therapy I think.
I first played poker on a camping trip with some friends some 10 years ago when I was 16. We didn't play for money and we used one of those cheapo wallmart sets of chips. None of us had any idea what we were doing. Pretty much every hand was limped family pots and checking down to the river.
A year later my dad's boss invited me to a homegame with his staff. This was the first time I played with someone who knew how to play. It was $10 to play, and my dad's boss won all 3 tournaments he ran that night. For me it was pretty embarassing, folding straights face up because I thought I had a high card. Thinking a straight beats a flush. That kind of thing.
That night I learned that poker was more than just luck, and that good players could make money. So I became determined to learn how to play and how to win.
I started hosting games at my school. I brought my wallmart chip set to school and classmates would play with me on my free periods and during recess. Never for money though.
During this time I started reading some articles about poker strategy online. Or at least that was my intention. After reading some articles about bankroll management and leveling I read an article on continuation betting.
I didn't need to read any more articles because it only took the cbet to make me a BEAST at the school games. Pratically every player in this game was weak-tight and would limp preflop and check/fold any board that they missed. I started to win most sessions just by cbetting 100% of boards.
A couple wins under my belt, combined with my secret weapon (the cbet!), and I knew that I was destined to be a professional.
I started to host real home-games for money (none of us were old enough to play at the casino). Every second Friday we'd play a game with a $5-$10 buy-in (None of us had jobs). It took a few weeks to realise we had to increase the blinds to force the game to end at a reasonable hour, and a few more weeks to figure out a structure that actually made sense.
I tracked all the results of these tournaments over the year, and by the end it was clear that I was the best. I had the largest ROI, the most first places, the most cashes, the most final tables. Every metric that mattered. And it was all thanks to my trusty cbet.
I wanted to go pro. I had no other career aspirations so I stopped paying attention in school and would just day dream about poker. I wanted to play all the time so I signed up to pokerstars under my mum's name because I was still only 17.
Because I had no bankroll on stars I played in the freeroll tournaments every day. The field was usually 9,000 players large, and I played in the 6pm game after school ended but before I went to bed. First place payed $6, so I knew I only needed to win 1 to launch my online poker career.
I quickly learned that 100% cbet was actually not so good against the stations and maniacs that play in freerolls. I had to change the way I played if I wanted to make it to the money.
Eventually, after a few weeks of busting before the first break, I made it to the money and I cashed in at 200th place for 50 cents - which just so happened to be the minimum buy-in for the 1c/2c cash game on stars.
I FINALLY HAD AN ONLINE BANKROLL!
I immediately sat down at a 9-ring cash game and bought in with my prize winnings. It took less than 5 minutes to completely decimate my bankroll. Much to my dismay, the players sitting at the lowest stakes cash game available in the entire country played like poker GODS! What the hell? Every one of my bluffs was called down. Every time I called down a bluff they had it. It was mental, these players were so good. Unlike anyone I had ever played against before.
At this point I knew I'd have to return to my poker studies if I wanted to have any chance at all. So I picked up my very first poker book, "Crushing the Micros", because I was gonna be playing micro stakes of course. One of the early chapters talked about the concept of set-mining and this BLEW. MY. MIND. Needless to say, I didn't feel it was necessary to read the rest of the book.
So, a few weeks later when I cashed my next freeroll tournament and returned to the 1c/2c cash game I completely changed my game. I used a new strategy where I only played pocket pairs preflop against opponents with full stacks. If I missed the flop i'd check/fold, but if I hit my set i'd check raise all in if OOP, otherwise i'd triple barrel pot bet every street if I was IP. It only took a few minutes to win my first stack with a flopped set. So I cashed out of the table and bought in to two tables.
If you've never multi-tabled before, let me tell you, it's the real deal. Twice the hands means twice the speed and that means twice the winnings. It made sense to me that I could scale this as big as possible. Back then, Pokerstars would let you play 24 tables at once - So as soon as my bankroll allowed it I started playing 24 tables at once using my se-mining strategy. The beautiful thing is, it worked!
So, playing 24 tables, only set-mining, I grew my stars bankroll to $1,000. I WAS A POKER GOD and I knew it. I crushed the school games, i crushed the home-game tournaments, and now i was crushing micro-stakes online too.
The day I turned 18 I knew it was time to crush all those fish at the casino. So for my 18th birthday I got my school poker friends (the ones who were 18 anyway) to take a trip to the casino with me.
We each brought $100 with us. 1/2 was too intimidating so the floor offered to open a 1/1 table just for us. Because it was a new table and 1/1 rarely got up, it was just us at the table for most of the night. Luckily for me though, I knew I could crush these guys with my 100% cbet strategy, and throw in a bit of set-mining and my friends stood no chance. I ended up busting every last one of my friends that night yet I only finished $300 up, which didn't make much sense. If I busted them all then shouldn't I be $800 up?
In any case, it didn't matter. I'd just proven to myself I could win at the high stakes casino games. Now I knew beyond a doubt that I could beat any game I played in. Soon I would go pro.
The next year I started uni but because I had no career aspirations besides poker, I'd just stay home and play poker online each day. Sometimes i'd go to class but I'd just play poker on my laptop in class
At some point I picked up holdem manager and imported my hand histories. Over 1 million hands I had a win-rate of 0.5 bb/100 - Yeha I know, I played a shit-load of poker.
It was eye-opening though. I'd played one million hands for pennies, with a win-rate that was hardly even positive. Just imagine if I'd been crushing that whole time instead. If my win rate was 10 bb/100 i'd be up thousands.
So once again, I was determined to get better. I bought books. Lots of books. Like, enough to fill an entire shelf of my bookshelf. And I started reading.
The theory of poker was first. Every time your opponent makes a mistake, you win. Every time you make a mistake, your opponent wins. Yes, got it, basic stuff. What's next?
Professional no limit holdem volume 1. Pot odds, implied odds, stack to pot ratio. This was life-changing stuff. Simple mathemetical concepts I'd never considered before that made so much sense in hindsight. This was it, I didn't need to read any more. Like the cbet and then the set-mine, these concepts were the missing piece I needed to take my game to the next level.
Now I know you're thinking: "Yeah ok, this is great and all but can you get to the part where you lose 200k?". And yes. Yes I can.
So I started skipping uni completely to go to the casino every day. Obviosuly I realised that the rake on 1/1 and 1/2 was fucked, so I started playing 1/3. Even though I was over 1k up online, the buyins for this stake were still HUGE to me and I played pretty scared money. And honestly, I never ended up beating 1/3. I was break-even AT BEST. (I rationalised my results by blaming the high rake. It was unbeatable, you see)
But, I made some friends playing 1/3 at the casino. One guy, Billy, started to invite me to his home game. I LOVED Billy's home game because the rake was lower than the casino's and the buy-in was only $100, which was much more reasonable.
Billy had this rule, where you could buy-in for the max stack on the table. This worked well with my set-mining check-raise all-in strategy so of course I would always buy-in for the max.
One night i'm playing in this game that's been going for 2 days straight and one palyer's got a 2k stack on the table. He's one of the fishier players so I think to myself, why not? And I buy in for my entire roll. 2k.
First hand i get JJ. Flop comes AJ7r. I check, fish bets pot. "Got ya" I think to myself, and I raise all-in.
Snap call. Oh shit. He flips over AA.
I just lost my entire roll that i'd spent the past year grinding for over 1 million+ hands. I'm tilted. Billy asks me if i'm rebuying. That was my entire roll I say.
And then Billy utters the words that you've all been waiting for. "Credit?"
And yeah, basically that's it. I've played in Billy's game ever since. And funnily enough, it turns out I'm not some poker god, i'm just a grade-a egomaniac poker fish. Billy has me for 100k on his books and i've tracked another 100k in losses i've been able to repay. So i'm down 200k over my poker lifetime.
Also, I flunked out of uni. Got married and subsequently divorced due to financial arguments. If you want to know where the money's come from I can assure you it's not my parents or a trust fund or anything like that.
I sell drugs to poker players at Billy's game.

This is also one of the best betting bonuses around for Canadians and gives a flying start for players wagering, for example, NHL, Premier League, NFL, or NBA. By the way, this LeoVegas sports bonus is available only to Canadian residents, so we’re in luck.
On top of a fabulous mobile offering, LeoVegas dishes out lavish bonuses for new Canadian customers. They offer a four-stage deposit bonus loyalty program.

Wagering requirements

As they always do at online gambling, LeoVegas’ bonuses come with a wagering requirement. However, for Canadian customers, the wagering minimum is only 25x.
Playing popular games at Leovegas, this wagering requirement means that you need to wager your bonuses 25 times using your bonus funds before you can withdraw the bonus or any winnings. Some casinos offer no wagering free spins, but they are not comparable for LeoVegas deposit bonus.

Restricted Games

You can play the bonus for the full amount in any classic slot or jackpot slot games. Classic slots or video slots give you the best chance to wager your bonuses. However, note that in table games such as Blackjack and Roulette, the bonus contributions are only 10%, so we do not recommend playing those table games with your bonus money.
LeoVegas is lax with its bonuses when it comes to minimum deposits. Casino players don’t need to aim anywhere near the maximum bonus amount to receive the extra free spins. Leovegas offers are unique as many other casinos limit your real-money free spin winnings to $20. The only requirement you need to clear before cashing out is 25x wagering.

Playing at Leo Vegas Canada

Games provided by LeoVegas includes a variety of option for online players. Leo Vegas combines an excellent mobile gambling experience with a massive variety of slot machines and other casino games. LeoVegas Sportsbook and live casino offer additional opportunities for Canadian online players.
LeoVegas was the very first online casino to go mobile. It launched in a cellphone-friendly format years ago and has only improved since – even sporting its gambling app. It doesn’t matter if you play with Android or Apple iPhone (or tablets, like iPad), you’ll always receive a top-notch gaming experience whether you have a super-expensive top-of-the-line iPhone or cheapo Android matters surprisingly little. The games run smoothly on any device, and navigating the site is easy.

Game Providers

Leo Vegas does not create casino games; they simply have games from various software providers. Top gaming providers such as NetEnt, Microgaming, NextGen, Evolution Gaming, IGT, Play’n Go, and other 34 developers. There have included some smaller-name casino software providers like QuickSpin, Thunderkick, and Yggdrasil. While not as famous as something like Microgaming or the mighty NetEnt, these companies have excellent mobile slots that you need to try.
Play a spin or two (or a few hundred) of Big Bad Wolf, and you’ll find out why we recommend games by these three companies. LeoVegas has some of those legendary slots (Mega Fortune, Mega Moolah and Mega Moolah Isis) with massive progressive jackpots as well. Video poker and table games haven’t been forgotten either-or ‘normal’ jackpot games.

Leo Vegas Sportsbook

Leo Vegas has a Canada-friendly sportsbook where you can bet on all your favourite sports.
LeoVegas hasn’t been in the betting business for long, but it’s already making an impact in Canada. While the LeoVegas Sportbook section doesn’t have quite the same selection of leagues and events as Betway, it does have Leo Vegas’ signature touch: it’s supremely mobile friendly. Betting with your cell phone or tablet is a pleasure, as Leo’s sportsbook is noticeably fast. This is something we’re still not experiencing across the board in 2020!
It’s beyond comprehension how mobile sportsbooks are so slow on many gambling sites, but LeoVegas is a welcome exception to this rule. The quickness matters with live betting especially, now you don’t miss a critical in-play bet just because the website was still loading. You can find a comprehensive array of Canadian sports and divisions at LeoVegas. You can naturally place a bet in the NHL, CFL, UFC, or other big leagues, but they also offer more marginal sports such as horse racing, cycling, or even surfing.

LeoVegas also has feature buy slots avaible. This slot game feature allows you to buy straight into a free spins bonus round. Most of the Megaways slots have bonus buy feature. Money Train (Relax Gaming) and Fat Santa (Push Gaming) slots are also popular feature buy slots you can play at Leo Vegas.
Live dealer games section has a red dog, Live Casino Hold ’em, VIP Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, along with the usual suspects.

Leo Vegas – King of Mobile Casinos

Leo Vegas has from the start concentrated on mobile online gambling. You can play all its top casino games on modern mobile devices. Supported devices include all iPhones and iPads, as well as Android phones and tablets. Even Blackberry and Windows phones and tablets are ok. For Android, there’s an optional LeoVegas mobile casino app for mobile gaming. Other than that, there’s no need for casino apps to jump into action on LeoVegas mobile devices.

Leo Vegas Mobile App

You don’t need an app to play.. So, if you have an iPhone, you simply gamble at Leo Vegas’ website. For Android phones and tablets, LeoVegas has an optional app you can download by following instructions you’ll find after registering at the Leovegas mobile casino. However, most players skip downloading the app. It’s a bit cumbersome as it requires changing a couple of Android’s standard settings. Especially as playing on a mobile device works equally well.
Usually, our bonus experts stay with one mobile casino for a couple of days to find out whether there are kinks in the mobile experience. But, we realized LeoVegas is pretty damn good when we noticed our experts had had accounts at LeoVegas for months. The draw here is that besides being technically perfect for Android and Apple devices, the mobile casino has big promotions for existing players. These promos are bound to make you pop back to Leo to play your free spins and other real money casino bonuses.

First attempt at live counting

Called a casino and asked if they had live blackjack (and what the table minimum ranges were) because its about 30 mins from my house. Remembered seeing some tables back in the day when i used to go in for Texas Holdem. On the phone i get redirected from their automated phone line and a person tells me no live BJ. Anyways, i show up dressed up like i got breadddddd (cuz i read a few times this may be a good cover for why I'm spreading bets so much), because i was very sure i had seen live tables there in the past. Turns out they still have about 20+ tables of BJ with varying rules. Find only a single table with $15 mins (6deck), which is what my bankroll will currently allow; the rest were $20 and up.
I back count the $15 table for about 15 mins trying to get my mind up to casino speed and inconspicuously looking all around the casino while the cards were being dealt and not really looking at the table until all 5 players and dealer had been dealt. My mind is fast enough to rapidly scan each set of cards and reach the visible running count. My biggest down fall is the in-between-hands part of remembering the running count, while tuning in to the conversations and not seeming like a robot. When i tune back in to the cards i often questioned myself "was it -1 or -2 to leave off?" (any tips to help with this?)
Anyways, i end up back counting that table for a total of probably 30 mins before the pit boss comes over and announces next shoe will raise to $20 min. I finally feel ready and eager to hop in once a seat is open and TC goes above 1. There are still about 5.5 decks left in the shoe. Count hovers from from -2 to 0 TC then back down to negatives until there is about two decks remaining, with one being cut off. Seat 1 opens and my heart rate goes up. Im preparing for my first action. Running count is currently at 0. Another hand or two is played and RC goes to 1. 1/1.5 TC. My heart tells myself its close enough to 1 TC to wong in at this moment but my head continues to remember the importance of my discipline to play only when conditions are in my favor, when possible. After that hand, TC goes back negative and a minute or two later, the table changes to a $20 min and my hope of getting my first AP action is folded. Blueballs.
I go to the poker room and play Hold em for about 2 hours to get some thrills and end up, up about $60. Not all bad, but not how i wanted to win it. *Sigh*
AP players of this realm, please bestow wisdom and encouragement on me

Table Etiquette

Hey all.
I’ve been playing NL Holdem online for years. Never anything big, just for fun.
I’m going to a casino this weekend with some friends and we’ll be playing poker. I’ve never played at an actual casino, and really don’t want to piss anyone off, or make myself look like an idiot.
We won’t be playing cash games; just a couple of small tournaments. My biggest concern is betting. Online poker bets (especially for low money ) are kind of all over the place. I usually use the pot/half pot bet options. I’ve heard low end is really 2x BB and up from there depending on hand strength. Would love some input.
Also, any other suggestions would be fantastic. For instance, I’ve heard it’s sometimes against the rules to look at your cards before the action gets to you.
Thanks!

First time cruiser impressions you won’t find on YouTube.

I keep getting asked by friends how I liked it, what was surprising, etc so I figured I’d help out some of the new people here who have one planned or are considering it with a few tips that aren’t the obvious YouTube flair. This pertains to Bahamas via Carnival.
Don’t he first in line to get off the ship in a new port if you didn’t plan an excursion.
Why? Well at least for Carnival they didn’t have their A team out there and set up. We were one of the first people out of the ship and basically no one behind us in the Bahamas and we were INUNDATED with locals selling cabs, horses, Bikes, boats, cigars, etc. Pushy, aggressive and to the point where they would grab at you and try to fit you with bracelets to get donations out of you for “disabled school kids”. DONT WEAR A TOURIST BRACELET IN THESE AREAS. You’re marking yourself same as staring at a map out in the street. It ruined the experience until I went back and saw larger groups with more put together guides and help that knew where they were going. The public beach is about a 10-13 minute walk from the ship but you have to walk around some construction to get there. Too many lefts instead of rights and you are not in good company. You’ll see signs protesting cruise lines, guys yelling how Senior Frogs is not local and shady people hanging from cars yelling stuff at you for example. Yes, seriously we had that happen twice. Probably because we were early and isolated.
Atlantis is not full of magic and sunshine if you don’t have an excursion there.
We took the boat over to wander around and the stores were kinda nice. Same thing tho, go early and it’s a ghost town! The hotel staff really don’t want you just wandering through to their beaches either so either find the public beach and walk/taxi there or don’t go to the other island. That said in general: you need a taxi or guide if it’s your first time.
There are no “free lunches” on a cruise.
Any time a pamphlet says “free drinks!” It means you’re going to get a single, weak drink for about a half hour to hour of your time hearing a pitch. Drink “specials” were not special most times besides the first day, 12-2, the casino had half priced drinks. Those were the only half priced drinks the whole trip. Even tho the alcohol package isn’t worth the money if you don’t drink much, consider that you can get better alcohols for the drinks you do get, all the specialty coffees and shakes you want and you can taste multiple drinks with no intention of finishing them to expand your palette. Use this same strategy and avoid the buffet. You can try multiple appetizers, dinners and desserts for free at the sit down dinners offered every night. Bring one nice pair of pants and a shirt because even tho they said there wasn’t an elegant night when I asked before the cruise... there was and I was forced to the buffet that day.
Don’t buy cookies/cake for your room to meet you on day one. Same with a robe, etc.
The same cookies and cakes the sell in the fun shops are what you’ll find for free in the buffet. Load a plate up and put it in your fridge in the room. Robes are free upon request but $50 if you take one home. Same price as in the shop.
Coffee is not always free.
If you get a coffee at the coffee bar you’re going to pay for it. The free coffee is in bars if they have it, room service, buffet and dining area. You’re free coffee can cost $5 if you add chocolate to it too so ask for a coffee and a hot chocolate then ask for an extra cup. They use the hot chocolate powder to make a Cafe Mocha... $5 each and it’s not included in “bottomless bubbles”
Btw bottomless bubbles suck unless you’re super into soda. I found myself never using it and just drinking tea and lemonade with meals which is free. It’s a very limited selection and they were continuously out or half the stuff they offered on the website. It doesn’t help that in the buffet there is no where to get soda unless you go to a bar stall.
The casino takes a massive raking fee.
For a private Holdem poker table, the digital kind, the raking fee was up to 10% per pot at a table of 3 or more. The only way playing casually in the casino was worth it is at full tables where you can actually make bigger pots. Also note that the casino is off in ports because they don’t want to follow the rules/win ratios of gambling commissions. Keep that in mind at the slots.
That’s all I can think of right now but I’ll answer questions best I can from my “first timer” point of view if you want something the usual videos don’t cover.
All that said: it was super fun and I enjoyed myself. Next time, knowing the small details, will be an even better time.

Overall Best Website For Low Stakes Online Poker

Yes, I know what you're all thinking.. how many of these stupid posts am I going to see. Why can't these freakin kids just read the subreddit wiki or the past posts...
Lol yes, I have done both of these things and even played online poker a few years back. I'm only playing NL Holdem and am going to be playing pretty low/micro stakes at 1/2 cent or maybe 5/10 cent max. My real reasoning here is that I just took a pretty helpful poker course and would like to practice the techniques and feel more comfortable to use this at lower (softer) online stakes before I play more casually in my local casinos and in vegas. Also, I am in the US but my state of residence is a "grey area" state so unfortunately no WSOP or Pokerstars websites. As for the wiki page it is very helpful but some sites like Global Poker are not even on there. The old posts (that are somewhat recent) are relatively helpful when they aren't extremely biased and start teaming up on certain websites. Basically I want to get a comprehensive taste of what your opinions are. The more opinions the better :)

I really would like to devote my time on one website. My ideal website to focus would encompass hopefully most of these rules:
  1. The site works in the US “grey area” states (so 888, Pokerstars, and WSOP are out of the question)
  2. Has decently soft low/micro stakes. (I don't expect fish everywhere, but something not incredibly tough)
  3. Doesn't have any issues in terms of money going in and out and allows for crypto deposits/withdrawals.
  4. No true evidence of a lot of bots or collusion going on.
  5. Lively cash games (although I might dabble in some tournaments)

Here are some things that I would like to see but aren't really mandatory:
  1. I would like to use PokerTracker 4 HUD if possible, but it’s not a dealbraker.
  2. A decent deposit bonus and rake back would be appreciated but again its not the end of the world if they dont
  3. I would like a decently stable software that doesn't have so many holes in it and constant crashes.

***PLEASE don’t just say a site name. Give me an explanation too! Pretend like I’m a huge noob (which I am).
Thank you for all of your help! I've heard good things between Global (which I’m still not sure if this is just one website?), ACR and Ignition.. but these are just a few to name. Let me know of any and please give reasoning! I appreciate it so much!

New player to the game trying to beat new players. Any tips?

I know the rules and hands of Texas Holdem, but I’ve never played before. Right now, I’m at a summer math camp in Seattle, and tonight is Casino Night where the winner of Texas Holdem can win a real, legit poker set. What are some tips and tricks I should know?

Dance With Fate

Heres some retarded fiction I had started before doing other thread. This has zero relevance to other thread I have. I just decided to clean this up and post it.
There I was, the year is 2004 the day after my 18th birthday and my old man is riding me hard to get a job. What my old man didnt know was I had been given 200$ by my grandma and I had bigger plans.
I jump in my truck and drive down the dark two lane highway headed for the casino. I had been watching poker on ESPN for a year now, saw a slightly fat man like Moneymaker win the main event then a fatter man named Chris “Future John” Raymer win the main after him. Hell, I am an attractively thin man, and any thin man should be able to crush fat men at almost any sport and poker has been deemed a sport now.
After arriving and parking my truck I have the realization that if poker is a sport then I am now an athlete walking up to the bright lights of the casino entrance, so I skip through the door to show off my athletic abilities, catching the eyes of many. To no surprise security instantly IDs me as I look an age that Epstein finds (he aint dead) appealing.
I pass the security check and wander further into the modern day Roman Coliseum where poker warriors battle to the death of their wallets on the felt. One hand in my front right pocket tightly clinching my 200$ birthday money from grandma, and my other hand in the left pocket cupping my balls knowing having balls makes poker champions.
I arrive to a podium outside of the arena, some schmuck in a suit staring me down, trying to get a read on me. My first chance to test my poker face, I am up for the challenge. I stare back at him with a blank face, after 10 seconds of silence which must have been extremely awkward for him, he asks what he can help me with and I respond “once you can read me, youll know”. Silence ensues again, never breaking eye contact with him. Breaking the silence once again he asks “are you wanting on a list for a Holdem game?”. Fuck... he has read me finally, but I wasnt rattled as it took him well over a minute and if I immediately call clock on opponents when its their turn I should be able to keep them guessing just long enough.
He informs me there is 1-2nl and 4-8fl. Being an alpha male I accept a 4-8 seat since the numbers are bigger and it must be a faster route to being a professional. I give him 100$ of my 200$ and sprint the 30 feet to my table to exert my athletic prowess once again.
Dealer welcomes me, so I compliment her smile and tip her 10$ of my 100$ stack while flexing my pecks and staring at her with my patented blank stare so she cant get a read on my desires. I then pull my hoody over my head and grab 4$ and put it into the pot, she stops me and says “dont splash the pot and you have to wait until next hand to play”. This upset and embarrassed me, my face turning red and my body feeling warm I am now fighting back tears and I havent even been dealt a hand. I shake it off though and tell myself that even Phil Hellmuth has made an ass of himself a few times.
Minutes later, I am dealt in. My first hand is K7 off suit. “Queen is a pretty good high card” I state out loud while shooting glances out of the corners of my eyes, trying to throw my opponents off of my trail, as I count ten 2$ chips out of my stack and cascade 20$ into the pot. The dealer stops me and says I can only raise to 8$. Fuck! Humiliated again by these obscure casino rules! I am now fighting back tears again from the frustration of making an error. “Hold on” I tell the dealer as I calm myself down and correct my bet to 8$, now the players behind me are calling the 8$ feverishly. No one folded it seemed like. I am feeling disrespected that no one respected my raise, so I stand up pull my hood back and say “in time, you will all learn to respect my raise!”. We go to a flop of 27J rainbow. A couple checks to me and I bet 8$. Dealer hands me 4$ back as she tries to explain how the betting structure works and once again I am losing composure over a critical error, having to fight back tears isnt GTO in a live game. A couple people call and an older man is looking at me trying to make a decision. “CLOCK!” I yell trying to eliminate as much time as possible for him to get a read on me. “FLOOR!” The dealer yells out very loudly. “Oh shit!” I yell, thinking there must be an active shooter in the building, I dive under the table onto the floor thinking I cant go out like this. I hear no shots ring out and no one else went under the table. I climb back into my chair to see the guy in the suit from the podium informing a disgruntled old man he has 30 seconds left. The old man calls and so do two others.
To my great pleasure the turn is a Queen. The card I had asked for. This was my chance to take this pot down. I bet 4$ and eye down the table behind me, hoping they remembered my preflop remarks and fold their hands to me. The dealer interrupts my stare down by instructing me I have to bet 8$. My eyes begin to water. This one might finally break me, I dont think I can hold the tears back this time. My bottom lip is trembling as I feel a tear roll down my right cheek. I have no time to deal with these emotions though, I am in the middle of an elaborate bluff. I shake it off and add the other 4$ to make my bet. I force a fold, then another fold and its back on the old man who is trying to stare at me again. “CLOCK!” I yell once again, and the dealer yells “Clock called table 7” instead of potentially scaring me back under the table. The old man raises me to 16$ one person calls and I am in the spotlight again. I raise him back to 24$ and he calls along with the other person.
The river is a King. “Yahtzee” I say out loud as I cascade four 2$ chips into the pot. Old man calls and the last guy announces raise to 16$ and I immediately raise him back to 24$, the old man calls and the last guy makes it 32$. I pause for a moment, staring at the board trying to figure out what he could have. I raise it again to 40$ and simultaneously tip the dealer 10$ more as I cant see a combination of cards this guy could have that beat me. Both players call as I table my K7, the old man pushes his cards face down in defeat and the last guy turns over 910. “Ten fucking high! Hahaha!” I bellow out, salivating at the mound of 2$ chips that I am already grabbing for.
The dealer cuts my movement for the chips off and informs me that he has a straight and wins the pot. A flash of rage builds inside me as I look down at the two 2$ chips I have left. “Fuck this! Not today! Not like this!” I yell, reaching for my pocket knife and opening it up. I had seen in an old western movie a man recover a pot he was about to lose by jamming his knife into the table. So I swing down with the knife over the pot, catching the dealers arm accidentally cutting her pretty badly. I ignore the blood and her screams as I start dragging chips towards my seat, shoveling them into my pockets as I plan my escape in this now chaotic environment of people running and screaming. Suddenly someone hits me from behind and pins me to the table. The dealer screaming in pain and me with my face pressed down on the table unable to overpower the people pinning me down, as I scream “thats my fucking pot!”
Security drags me off as I stare at the chair that once was inhabited by me and the pile of chips now covered in blood that should have been mine. I was going to be a professional poker player, but ended up with an attempted murder charge and a 15 year sentence instead.
Its been 15 years since that happened. 15 years of reliving my session, remembering my errors. Unable to avoid thinking what might have been if I had not struck her arm with my knife and had utilized the other 100$ my grandma gave me by rebuying. I play Holdem in prison for cigarettes and snacks. Telling my fellow inmates of all my glorious triumphs from my professional poker days before being locked up. Wasnt like they knew I had only played one live hand.
Finally released from prison hours ago, among the items retrieved from when I was arrested was that other 100$ bill my grandma gave me all those years ago. My second buy in it was supposed to be, so my second buy in it will be. Im on my way to the casino to pull up my chair once more to dance with destiny.

Weird Home Game Rules Question(s)

Hello all, not sure where else in the world I can ask this, so figured I would ask the poker reddit for some advice. I warn you that this post is probably real cringe for any real poker player, and I am 100% aware of that.
First off - I don't know if discussion of weird home games is allowed here. Second, I am not a hardcore poker player so I accept this cringe (but I am into modern board games, so there is overlap I guess when it comes to playing things that have rules, skill, and thought, so Poker tends to fill that niche sometimes). In fact, it is my board gaming side that makes me questions certain games and rules I have encountered in recent years, and thus, wanted to get your take on the situation I have stumbled into.

Some background about me if it matters: I play poker online or in Casino's a few times a year. I read a little bit from time to time, but I am probably your typical sucker who knows a little bit about Poker to pretend they know what they are doing but not enough to really ever win. I'll play in holdem tournaments whenver I am near a casino for the fun of it, and never really spend too much over a year because I am just not good enough to do so. I'm your typical Poker noob in most accounts I would guess beyond basic strategy and watching Poker on TV.

Anyway, near me, the only Poker game I have ever been invited to is a home game of some older gentlemen that I know who play for smaller amounts, and always play home variant dealer choice type games. They'll go for 6-8 hours where the dealer gets to choose the game each hand. A lot of these seem to be well known, Jacks or better + progressive, games with wilds (baseball, follow the queen, etc), stud, draw, etc. They never ever play hold-em though.
They introduced me to these games, and for a while, I thought these were just super common games, and some of them are, but I noticed over time, there were rules differences between games, or tweaks to games that more and more started to make less and less sense, and it got to a point recently where I question if I should even attend anymore on principle, or if maybe I am indeed wrong in my logic, and I suppose at a certain point, once you are playing "house games" really, there is no logic anymore anyway, but read on and please see if you can tell me if my thoughts are wrong. There is one specific case that I believe would answer most of the others - which I have outlined below.

The general house rules are as follows: 3 bet maximum to whatever the night limits are (can fluxuate from $1 to $5) Friendly + your cards talk if you accidentally don't realize you have a hand, you'll win if you show your cards and it indeeds beats what you said you had, and every game is dealers choice. You ante in for the full table when you deal. The game is super friendly in that if you make a mistake, no one gets upset really, if you accidentally deal a card up, they'll friendly reshuffle, stuff that if real money was on the line would never be ok.

I've played this type of poker on and off for a few years with them, mostly because they are people close to me and always more of a social excuse to play something. Mostly just to play and never to make money - although I tend to win more than I lose since they all obviously play for the gambling spirit.

My Dilemma:

There is one game they love to play, which is 7 card no peek. Basic rules are basically you play 7 card stud, but all your cards are face down, you aren't allowed to look. The first player after the dealer flips cards until they have the high hand, a round of bet happens, then the next person goes flipping cards until they have the high hand, a round of betting happens starting with the player that now has the high hand, etc, until someone either is left with the highest hand, or everyone folds. It's a really ridiculous random game that already has it's own problems (one being that I feel there is some type of advantage to being next to someone who is dealing and constantly calling to play this game) but it is what it is - a random game that I can somewhat stomach once or twice a night.

However - I've noticed in recent sessions, someone will introduce a new game - often probably googled - that has some random rule. And then someone will try to incorporate that random rule into another game, coming up with a hybrid. in most cases it's fine. Changing how many cards, the amount to bet in certain situations, what is wild, what triggers a wild, extra hole cards, weird high low variations, and for 90% of the cases, while it makes certain games more complicated, the rules at least are consistant and IMO fair for everyone who has the nerve to play these types of games.

For instance, someone will call out to play Follow the Queen - which is 7 card stud, except that if a Queen is dealt face up, the next card that is dealt is wild, until another queen is dealt, then the wild card can change, etc. Somewhat wild and random but at least resembles poker.

Then you have games like Chicago (I don't even know if this one is real and probably not even the real name) in which for whatever reason 4's and 8's are wild, and if you are deal a 10 face up, you are out of the game. More random, can suck if you have a great hand but are dealt a 10, but a house "take that" type game, I get it.

However, then someone will do the following at some point and try to combine games - "Let's play No Peek Follow the Queen" or "No Peak Chicago" mixing these two games up, and at some point, I start seeing what I feel are rules issues - and this is where I hope to find some help.

My issue becomes the following. Let's pretend that they call out "No Peek Chicago". The game will follow the same rules, but this situation comes up which I argue against all the time and I will try and do my best to explain it, so you can tell me if the game is just purely flawed (from a fairness perspective) or it was already flawwed and my points are moot, or some variation in between.

Here is one example situation: Let's pretend there are two players left in the game of "No Peek Chicago". The first player has: 5 J J J J X X showing, where for the past few hands, this has been the highest hand showing. 4 jacks, nothing wild showing, but no other player has gotten a better hand, and thus folding. X are two cards that never have been flipped. The last player, deciding to stay in the game flips all of his cards and has , K - K - K - 5 - 5 - 9 - Q - 2. His hand is a losing hand currently - a full house. Now, normally, when there are players still left (and in this case, there are two), there would be a round of betting, and then the next player who has cards to flip would flip. However, in this case, the ONLY person with cards left to flip is the first person with the higher hand.
Should the currently losing player be allowed to stay in the game, bet through the 3x rounds of betting, to force the already winning player to flip his 6th card - in the hopes that they flip a 10 and kill their winning hand? OR should the currently winning hand win since the other player has no cards left to flip thus ending the game?

This is the dilema that starts to cause fights. One camp argues that the person with the winning hand should not have to flip any more cards because they are already winning, while another camp argues that because there exists cards that can kill the hand (or in the case of something like follow the queen, where if a queen gets flipped, it could change the wildcard state, and thus turn the losing hand into a winning hand?)

The argument seems to stem from the idea that in a non-wild version of this game, a person with a losing hand would then lose and the game would end, and thus, that would remain true in this version, and the winning hand should never have to show their remaining cards.

However, it's been argued that in reality, in a normal game, a person if they wanted could go through a round of betting, force a card flip, just that it never would happen because the loser would lose 100% of the time, so instead they just automatically fold - but in a game with wilds that can change the stage of the game - someone could arguably continue betting against all odds in the unlikely event that a 10 would be flipped killing the game (or in follow the queen a queen would flip somehow affecting the game and reversing the winner). It would be expensive since the winning player could just raise x 3 each time to get to that point, but, that is the risk of the losing player to decide.

It's also then been argued by not allowing the losing player to continue betting, the game becomes an "unfair flawwed game" in terms of betting rules and should just be banned because of this.

Any thoughts to any of this? Beyond just don't play these types of crappy games. I'm more interested from a game rules analysis more than anything that if this particular game is an "unfair" game, or is it always fair as long as everyone plays and agrees to the rules from the beggining. This whole thing has had me researching a lot of the other weird house games they play, and even a lot of the games they play don't follow many of the common conventions that the internet archives these rules, which might also be common.

Thanks for your time!

Mixed games?

I got the poker bug on Hold’em, first no limit then limit. Thought other games were nonsense; if they’re not playing it at the casinos, why did people play them? That was three years ago.
Now, I went with that logic and found myself eventually in a limit Omaha 8o game at the casino while waiting for a holdem spot. Cool, but ok.
Then I played my first live plo game. The great game.
With hold’em and limit Omaha 8, I leaned last night you can understand Stud and Razz actually quite easily, so effectively the whole landscape of HORSE. The WSOP 50k PCC going on now piqued my interest into all of this. It’s like discovering a whole new world.
2-7 Triple Draw and Badugi, so draw games in general, are the games that feel most foreign to me in terms of its rules. To be able to discard cards is weird, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
Is anyone’s mixed game experience like mine? Again, it’s like a whole new world and a breath of fresh air.

I've Created an Actual Practical Live Casino Poker HUD for Smartphones

First and foremost, here is a landscape screenshot of the HUD I programmed via mobile Excel and have been using for the past year and a half in L.A. casinos with great success. It has earned me roughly $48/hr playing the $3/5 NL holdem games in L.A. over about a 1,000 hour sample. I'd estimate my expected EV is running right about average, and this winrate will look the same (give or take $5/hr over 10,000 or 100,000 hours). I take some credit for being an on-and-off player, but consistent winner since I learned the game at 18 (I'm 31 now). But this HUD has a lot to do with my winrate being where it is, and frankly keeping me from being bored to tears playing live poker for the past 18 months or so.
As are many of you, I'm a former U.S. online player who stepped away from poker after Black Friday turned my world upside down back in 2011 (Full Tilt, thanks for everything). I've had a few decent, middle of the road analyst-type jobs since and have recently left my last one to pursue my Master's degree. While doing so, I have been playing live poker seriously to cover living expenses and supplement my income.
Early on around the spring of last year, I realized that the biggest obstacle I had in adjusting to live poker, especially after 4 years away from the game where I was used to 16-tabling at FTP, was managing the slow crawl of being dealt 18-25 hands per hour of NL holdem. This was a far cry from the 700-900 hands per hour I was used to from my online days. However, to compensate for the slow drip of cards to work with in live games, I noticed that the players I faced when actually receiving playable hands, were absolutely horrendous on average. The slow crawl poker that I thought was a joke during my online days was actually a huge benefit in a sense, as I noticed that patiently waiting for premium or semi-premium hands in loose L.A. casinos almost guaranteed significant winnings in the long run assuming the hands weren't butchered by me post-flop. Everyone else gets 18-25 hands per hour to work with as well, and most of them get impatient at some point or another and KJ suited starts looking like aces to many.
However, even as a patient player, I was still extremely bored folding 84 offsuit all day and actually seeing a flop with a playable hand 3-5 times per hour. I could manage my time browsing the front page of Reddit or watch a mindless YouTube video about how to make a great pizza and still make an ok profit on most days, but I wasn't learning much about my opponents while in between hands. If I managed to stay attentive after repeatedly folding my hands and watching the action, I was picking up on play styles of my opponents, but not to the extent my HUD allowed me to passively do when I played online and everyone's stats just popped up next to them as I played... it was mostly to the extent where I'd noticed seat 3 at my table played a lot of hands and bluffed lots of flush draws, or seat 8 was nitty and seemed to be sacrificing all his blinds. Getting this vague, but incomplete understanding of my table, while knowing how vital it was to pick up on every piece of information I could to ideally play my 3-6 flops per hour as perfectly as possible with these 8 other guys around me... That's when I had the idea to create this live HUD. As much as players say you can get plenty of info just by watching people play their hands (which is true), I wanted to take it a step further. And despite the common consensus that live HUD's are too small of a sample size or too much of a pain in the ass to ever be worth using, I'm glad I went through with this idea.
My biggest worry in making the program was that it would be far too time consuming to be on my phone entering tedious numbers while a live poker game was going on and people were all around me asking me "what game am I playing... that looks weird." Well, I can honestly say that around half the players at my local casinos are browsing on their phones and tuning out while waiting for their next hand. In general, people don't give a shit at all what you're doing on your phone, and even if the floor came over and were genuinely interested in what my program is (which they never have and will never care), I could tell them the truth and they would most likely just find it "cool." I do occasionally have an old timer in the seat next to me take a peek at my phone, but they have no idea what they're looking at. If I don't really care for them and they ask, I'll tell them it's a spreadsheet for work. If I'm cool with them, I'll tell them exactly what it is and joke with them that they should start playing more than their 17% of hands they're playing, or everyone will think they're a nit. They'll usually just laugh when I tell them, and compliment me or ask how "the stats say they're playing". I'll lie and tell them something like "the stats say you're gonna donate all your money to seat 2 in the next 10 hands"... because I'm a poker player.
My next biggest worry in making the live HUD was that half the players in L.A. casinos play for around 1-2 hours at most before going bust or leaving with what they made, which means I'm only getting about a 40-50 hand sample size. I figured this wouldn't do me much good until I realized that the differences in play style statistics in casino players become apparent much, MUCH more quickly than online. I'll explain...
In full ring online games, extremely tight players' VP (voluntarily put in pot) percentages were between 10-13%. Loose players' VP's probably were around 20% and above. In 40-50 hands online, tight players could easily play 20-25% of their hands just by being dealt a good run of hands, making that sample size pointless.
In LIVE games, on the other hand, I quickly noticed that players' VP's (in my casinos) ranged anywhere from 10% to 90%. Yes, 90%. Casual players who come over from blackjack and don't really know much holdem strategy will sit down and literally want to play every hand unless the action has a $500 all-in preceding them, and the player looks down at 62 offsuit and has to begrudgingly fold. In fact, after about 5 sessions of tracking stats, I deducted that the average VP in my casinos is around 28-30% (note that this screenshot is from my most recent Thursday afternoon session, and my table was tighter than typical for this location). And this was among plenty of casino regulars. This average VP in my live games would be considered a MANIAC VP on a Full Tilt ring game back in 2008, when online players were frankly loose and terrible. Yes, tight players in live games will still get a hot run of cards over 40 hands and have a deceivingly high VP%, while loose players can be card dead and be deceivingly low. However, they will usually balance out to within 5-10% of what they are after just 50 hands if you played with them for another 200. You will not see a player play at 20% VP through 50 hands, and be at 45% after 100 hands. It just doesn't happen, unless there's some uber-tilt going on, which is easily picked up on without any need for a HUD.
The point I'm making is that I was noticing that just after a 15-20 hand sample size at any table, I was seeing some players playing 15% of their hands vs. others playing 60%, 70%, or 80% of hands. And this was plenty sufficient to at least give me a ballpark estimate of a player's style without having to mentally remember whether I keep seeing common players playing lots of hands, as most live players do to label players as tight or loose in their minds. The longer these players stayed while I tracked their preflop stats, the more detailed of an analysis my HUD gave on their ranges and play styles. 50 hands of data on a player in a live game is equivalent to about 200 hands of data on an online player, simply due to the DRASTIC percentage differences in VP, PFR, 3B, and even Fold to C-Bet stats among live players.
Finally, probably the most glaring concern, and the one I have spent by far the most time addressing, is the amount of time one would have to spend entering data into the spreadsheet after every hand. Keeping track of what every single player is doing after every single hand is a giant pain in the ass. However, only having to keep track of non-folding players makes things significantly easier. Especially when just tracking preflop stats (the most important stats), which is essentially what my HUD does. By making folds as blank cells by default, and only counting hands where at least one number has already been entered in its respective column, I was able to create a spreadsheet where the program counts everyone's action as a fold by default until a 0, 1, 2, or 3 is put in its place. This cuts down the time it takes to enter stats for each hand by about 80%. If seat 1 raises preflop and everyone folds, I am putting a "2" in row 1 to signify they raised, and leaving every other row blank. That's it. The program automatically calculates row 1's raise into their VP, PFR, 3B, and all their other stats, as well as the overall table stats, while automatically tallying up a fold for seats 2 through 9 in all of their respective stats. If seat 3 raises preflop, seat 5 reraises, and seat 3 folds (along with everyone else), I'm entering a "2f3" (to resemble a raise and fold to 3bet) in row 3 and a "3" in row 5 (to resemble a 3bet). Done. If a new player comes into the game, I'll enter what hand number they started on, and all hands before it are automatically entered as "0"s for that player, which tells my data to ignore those "0" hands for that player.
To debunk a few other commonly brought up myths as to why keeping stats during live games is supposedly pointless:
1) Casinos, at least in California and most in Vegas outside of crazy high stakes games, couldn't care less as to what you're doing on your phone. Apart from being on your phone with a buddy in the middle of a big hand and asking them what you should do, casinos do not want to make it their business as to what you're doing on your phone while you're out of a hand (or even in a hand, as long as you're not slowing the game down). Entering in a couple 1's and 2's into a spreadsheet to gain an analytical edge that they can't comprehend is far from a casino's concern. Even if they wanted to know what you were doing, nothing in any casino rules even hint at this being frowned upon.
2) It is NOT difficult to follow the action preflop, enter in a couple one-digit numbers into a spreadsheet, and then go back to whatever it is you're doing at the poker table. If you already folded your hand, you can enter in whatever seats actually had an action immediately. If you're actually involved in a hand (eg. you raised from seat 1 and had seats 5 and 9 call you), just play your hand as normal and enter the appropriate three numbers when your hand completes. If you miss a hand or happened to have tuned out while watching a cute dog do a somersault on aww, it's not a big deal. The spreadsheet doesn't care. It's at your disposal to give you as much information as you want to take from it.
3) People do NOT treat you as a nit and give you no action just because you keep glancing at or using your phone. It's 2016, and people all around us are on their phones and tablets doing god knows what. In fact, what I've found about live players, is that they're impatient, and even if they KNOW you're studying them or playing nitty (which I do on occasion, but not always), live players are bad and they really can't help themselves. If they have K9 offsuit and see you 3bet them. They aren't focusing on the kid who keeps playing on his phone... they're focusing on the fact that they have K9 offsuit, and maybe this is the time they'll finally peel off a flop and see three 9's hit... because they're totes due!
I can address several other things about my HUD, such as the "action graph" at the bottom of the screen that fills as you play or the shading of each player's cell in column A, which is lightest for the most profitable seat at the table based on the loose/tight players on your left or right and darkest for least profitable seat... But this has turned into a pretty long explanation already. If you have questions, I'll try and address them in the comments. No, this is not currently available for public use yet. But I'm not opposed to releasing it to the masses at some point should it gauge enough interest. I'd ideally like to find some other individuals who are actually enthusiastic about my project and perhaps even find a few app developers with a poker background and turn what is essentially a full-fledged backend spreadsheet into a frontend app with an actual table interface with 9 seats where each seat could simply be tapped, double tapped, etc. to signify limps, raises, etc. for each hand. That is the dream at least... I have no idea at the moment whether it could plausibly ever be a reality. But I can assure all that having this program at my disposal while I've played has been +EV for me, helped me in a couple very key spots where I would have never known to fold my two pair or steal blinds with my junk, or 3bet light, and it's given me some advantages that most would consider unheard of in live poker.

5NL Hand Analysis

Ignition Casino - $0.05 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hero (BTN): $4.89 SB: $2.15 BB: $.72 MP: $9.74 CU: $12.35
Preflop: (5 players) Hero is BTN with TsTh
MP raises $.17, hero raises $.29, SB folds, BB calls, MP calls
Pot is $.73
Thought process: Since it's not a reraise, I've put both these guys on a wide range. 22+, A2s+, K9s+, QTs+, A2o+, K9o+, QTo+, suited connectors
Flop: 2c6h4c
BB checks, MP raises $.44(total pot $1.17), Hero raises $1.20 (total pot $2.37), BB folds, MP calls
Pot is $3.13
Thought process: MP bet a little over half pot, so I'm thinking he has a pair or suited clubs. I didn't want this to go to showdown and I only want to play this hand HU. I raised him pot size because if he had a high pair, he would have bet more, so I'm trying to protect against him connecting the clubs. I'm thinking if I'm going to lose this, it's because he has a higher pair or clubs... he calls and I'm like aw fuck he probably has a set or high pair.
Turn: Tc
MP checks, Hero checks
Pot is still $3.13
Here he checks, which confuses me. I had a hunch he was going to check-raise me because he's called both my raises. If he has 2clubs I'm fucked, but I very likely to beat him if he's going a set or two pair, or high pair. At this point, I've ruled out any straights and I put him on holding A2s+, KTs+, QJs, A2o+, KJo+, or suited connectors
River3c MP checks, Hero checks
I'm just glad he didn't raise me
Results: Final pot:$3.13, MP takes it with QdJc
I'm super new to this game, but one strategy I've been doing alot is raising 4BB+1/limper, then if a board like this hits and I hold a pair, I would half pot/pot size bet to see if the villian is looking to draw or has A2+,K2+ hoping for those 8 outs. And usually it works if they don't and I would take the pot from there because pot size>equity. But this was the first game that I ran into and have no idea how to play at the turn. In hindsight, I should have probably bet the turn half pot to pot size or allin just to force him out because I had 80% equity against his hand, but villian didn't seem like the type to fold.

Fish Wants to Play Live

Soon, I'm going to be away on holiday near a casino (specifically Jupiters on the Gold Coast, AUS). I'd love to play live poker, because I think it would be a very fun and interesting experience.
I'm writing here to ask for some advice, because I'm definitely a bad player. I play very casually 1-2 or 2-5NL cash games, and I usually break even and I'm prone to tilt. I've never played live before, and I would certainly benefit from some backup information that protects me from making a fool out of myself.
This is a link to the casino's texas holdem page, which shows the blinds/buy ins. I'm confused by this $2-$3 blinds business, but they're probably the stakes that I'll play at. And yes, I'm prepared to potentially lose $300.
Specific questions I have are:
  1. What kind of playing patterns are more common in live games compared to online? (I've heard that lowish stakes at casinos tend to have more limpers pre-flop).
  2. Are there any rules/etiquette that I should always keep in mind at a live table that I may not currently be aware of?
  3. What strategies or playing styles tend to work better in live poker as opposed to online play.
  4. How the fuck do I manage physical chips? Also, what's the best way to keep counting the size of the pot to ensure good sizing?
Any tips or roasts telling me to kiss $300 goodbye would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
