A Brief Introduction to Genshin Impact - AKA "That one game that looks like Breath of the Wild"

Ever since the game was announced to have a Switch port coming soon, many who have previously never heard of Genshin Impact grew intrigued. The open world in particular peaked the interest of many, especially after comparisons to Breath of the Wild were drawn. In anticipation of the port, I’d like to give a brief rundown on what the game is, and how aspects of it work. While the game is free, so there is no harm in trying it out, I’m hoping this post will serve as a guide for anyone on the fence about giving it a shot.

What exactly is Genshin Impact?
Genshin Impact is a fantasy open world action RPG from Chinese developer studio miHoYo, responsible for a couple prior games, notably mobile game Honkai Impact 3rd. Though they aren’t strangers to games, Genshin Impact is their latest, and by far most successful title yet.
The game is set on the continent of Teyvat, a vast, completely open world consisting of 7 nations associated with a different element, and a god-like figure of said element. You play the role of a traveler from a far away world, sealed in Teyvat following a confrontation with a powerful entity who separates you from your sibling. Your main driving goal is to reunite with said lost sibling. On your journey you are accompanied by a strange floating fairy thing which accompanies you and serves as both a guide as well as a quirky sidekick.
Important thing to note at this point is that the game is not currently finished. Genshin Impact is a live service game, receiving continuous content, story, and event updates every 6 weeks. At the current point, with everything there is to do at the moment, the story is less than a quarter of the way finished. The story is expected to develop over time via game updates. Currently, only 2 of the 7 regions are available to explore. As this implies, Genshin Impact isn’t the type of game you blast through in a week. It’s a long term commitment.

What is the gameplay?
Being an open world game, a big emphasis on exploration is present in the game. Several markers exist within the world that encourage travelling across the world to discover them all and have constant access to the entire world by warping to these markers. Materials from the world itself are everywhere, and are actually critical in the upgrading and improving of of your party members. In this regard, running around gathering any harvestable materials you see is highly rewarded. The world itself is vast, full of everything ranging from sheer cliffs, to dense forests, snowy mountains, beaches, and plains.
Domains, which are basically this game’s version of dungeons, are present, only unlike BOTW, they are almost entirely combat trial based, either having you defeat a certain amount of enemies, of defeat all enemies within a set amount of time, usually with sort of restriction or challenge aspect to them. Completion of these domains rewards loot such as weapons and artifacts (equippable items to make your party members stronger), which you can either use to improve your team, or upgrade your existing weapons/artifacts by infusing them into them. World bosses also exist in addition to regular enemies, which drop special materials required for upgrading your characters, Safe to say, you’ll be fighting these world bosses a lot.

What About the Combat?
Combat in this game is very much team focused. Don’t expect to have success by relying on one overpowered party member destroying everything. You have 4 party member slots, and each character in the game has a unique element associated with them. Those being Pyro (fire), Hydro (Water), Cryo (ice), Geo (earth), Anemo (wind), Electro (electricity), and Dendro (nature/plants, no current playable character has this element). Switching in and out between party members in battle to cause elemental reactions of the various elements is a huge part of the game’s combat, and thus a balanced team composition of characters of varying elements is encouraged to maximize damage potential. This might sound a little confusing, but in practice it becomes much clearer. In addition, the combat isn’t turn-based. Everything happens in real time, so you’ll need to rely on quick thinking and maneuvers in combat.
Every playable character in Genshin Impact has unique attributes and skills that set them apart from the rest, all with varying playstyles and roles. This means you have lots of freedom in terms of how you set up your party based on how you like to play or what role you want someone to fill. There are four different weapon types as well, being swords, bows, polearms, claymores, and catalysts (basically ranged magic), further increasing potential avenues for teambuilding.
Now while all this may seem like a lot of work and things to keep in mind, it’s important to remember that...

Genshin Impact is a PVE Game
You can play co-op with your friends and explore and beat dungeons together, but there is no PVP in this game at all. None. This, in essence, means there is little pressure to actually grind and make your team as good as it can possibly be. Genshin Impact isn’t a particularly difficult game. If you want, you can play with your favorites only and you’ll do fine. There’s no need to stress about using the very best characters with the very best equipped artifacts or the very best weapon. This much freedom in how you chose to build your party, and no pressure to compete in some sort of meta ultimately results in a refreshingly laid back experience, allowing one to truly experiment and see what style fits them best, at least for me.

Unfortunately, I’d be hard pressed to not mention Genshin Impact’s big catch. I’ve been painting it in a pretty positive light thus far, but now comes the time where I talk about the thing that will unfortunately put many people off of this game.

If Genshin Impact is free, how is it monetized?
Put bluntly, Genshin Impact uses a gacha monetization system. For those unfamiliar, gacha is a system where resources are spent on random items in a store. If it sounds like I’m describing a lootbox, it’s because I am.
Assuming you start playing right now, you’re only going to get access to 5 playable characters. You, 3 other party members to start you off, and another one you get by completing a challenge. Every other character in the game, of which there are 20 and counting, are only available via “wishes.” Wishes are the lootboxes. They take an ingame form of currency known as “primogems” which are trickle fed to the player via completing tasks in game, and in special events. They also just so happen to be in the store, purchasable with real money. Unlockable characters are categorized into 4 stars and 5 stars. 4 stars you can expect to obtain roughly every 10 wishes. 5 stars are much more rare, with less than a 1% chance to get one until you hit 75 wishes, in which case your odds increase until you roll one. Keep in mind, you have absolutely no control over what you get when you wish. This system exists for 4 and 5 star weapons as well, with the same system.
It’s gambling. Plain and simple. Please, do not play this game if you have an addictive personality and are the type to impulsively spend large amounts of money on games like this.
The other notable form of monetization is the resin system. Resin is essentially energy. Many things in this game cost resin to complete, such as domains and bosses. And given that domains and bosses drop essential materials for improving your team, you’ll be doing them very often. Resin regenerates over time, or is able to be purchased via the game’s aforementioned premium currency, primogems. As you can probably guess, the game artificially limits what you can do every day in order to keep you consistently playing day by day, in an attempt to get you addicted to the point where you’re more comfortable spending real money. Such is the sad reality of many games, and Genshin is not immune to these monetization tactics. The sliver lining is that money only accelerates the process or ensures you can get a character or weapon you want from a lootbox. As I mentioned, you get the premium currency just by playing the game, only they are very stingy with it.

TL;DR
If you go into Genshin Impact expecting a game that provides a story you can blast through in a week, and gameplay that respect’s the player’s time, you will be disappointed. However, if you can accept the free-to-play monetization tactics, are intrigued by the battle and exploration systems I’ve described, and just want the type of game you can play for about an hour every day, give it a shot. It’s free, so it couldn’t hurt.
I hope this post helped anyone with any doubts or concerns. I have over 100 hours into the game myself, so you have any questions, I’ll be happy to try and answer them!

Gambling/mini games in Zelda BoTW

What mini games would you like to see make a return to the game (if any)? I'd personally like to see a horse race of some sort because not all horses have equal stats.

How much $$$ would you need to max out a Venti?

How much $$$ would you need to max out a Venti?
This is a rough calculation:
Pity = 90 pulls, from what I'm seeing it takes ~70-80 pulls per 5*
Venti rate = 50% -> one should expects to pull ~150 times for 1 Venti
You'd need 7 Venti to max -> ~1050 pulls
$100 would net you 8000+ gems = 5 pulls

One should expect to spend $2100 to max out a Venti.
If you're unlucky, it could be way more.
If you're lucky, it could be less, but probably not much.

I actually went ahead and whaled it out.
It took me $2400

...My kidneys hurt, but now I have a maxed Venti to use for eternity...so somehow it soothes my pains.

Genshin feels like an open world RPG that become a mobile game after you reach AR 30.

Hello Travellers, I hope y'all have a great day and a good time in Genshin Impact.
Me and my friend have been playing this game lately and have a very fun experience.
Expect one of mine friend that refuse to play. He lost interest instantly because it looks to similar to BOTW, is what he said. Can't blame him on that one. Haha.

Anyway, i'm just gonna stop beating around the bushes and telling what i concern about this game instead of praising it. It's not because i hate it, but praising the game, won't help the game become better since the current game state is filled with horrible system.
Before i start to explain why, I want to say that, this is an experience coming from players that reach AR35. And you don't need to become AR35 to felt this problem.

The first 20-30 hours in GI is without a doubt very enjoyable, you explore the world, unlocking tower like most ubisoft game, lol, solving puzzle, and making elemental combos. All that is good, but became useless and stale once you reach AR30.
Once you reach AR30, you will notice that materials become harder to get, tons of domain appeared but the Resin are not enough to cover it all. You farm artifact on Stormterror domain but get awful drop, even Wolf run is also bad drop, yet Mihoyo decide to limit it with weekly timer.
What i'm saying is, as someone who play this game, and invest in it, I'm pretty much lose interest to put more time in it, since the endgame are non-existent. Or more accurately, SLOWED-down by the RESIN system.
I'm aware that mihoyo previous game is HI3, and they intend to put some of mechanic in here. In this case is Resin and Gacha. But heed my word Mihoyo.
If you intent to keep PC players like us. That rarely play mobile game or gacha game, because we know how toxic it was. How time-gating it is when it comes to progression. With the current resin system, we will leave the game without a doubt.
Also keep in mind that we're not freeloaders, we spent your shop even it have an awful rates because we enjoy when we have things to do. But when the game progression need resin, but resin are limited. We lose motivation to keep going because the game just don't want us to progress unless we paid resin with primogem. (seriously. lol).
From what i see right now, Genshin still have things to do, for us, as a gamers that play PC games a lot. But it's unplayable due to resin system. We don't need tons of skipping dialog quest, what we need is the feeling of "freedom", able to progress what we want, when we want.
IMO resin system is really unacceptable in this game, it's an open world, but you can't progress without resin, so why bother explore the world then?

So what's the solution?
You either make the resin regen faster, so you can still monetize it.
Or give us 3-4 daily resin regen item, so you can still monetize it. (what a greed).
Or remove it completely, since it's not a system that brings JOY to players at all. It just a limitation that leads player to frustration. Thus quiting your game and you have 1 less player to make profit of.
Please, Mihoyo, Just reduce your greed man. Haha.. it's not that hard.
This game have 10M players registration. Just imagine 8M of them buy Monthly pass.
That alone already made 40Million! And we're not covering the gacha for whale, battle pass, and upcoming skin yet.

The 2nd problem in this game had is the gacha system and poor monetization.
Currently i've put 500 USD in this game for battle pass, monthly subs, and wishes.
And let me tell you, i regretted it. Supporting the dev is a must, but when the wishes pull is awful.
I can't say i'm happy putting my money in there.
I know whales put more money than me, 500 USD is nothing in gacha.
But i rarely gambling, it's not easy to make me become an addict.
That's why, spending 500 USD just to get a 1-2 five star character is really stupid for myself.
And please stop saying that they need GACHA, since it's F2P.
There's a lot of F2p that thriving till today without gacha system.
Valorant, Path of Exile, Warframe, etc.
And what's even worse, Genshin Impact monetize the heck out of this game, from SKIN (future), battle pass, Gacha, Monthly subs, and even RESIN they MTX it. God damn. I didn't realize that Mihoyo are trying to surpass EA. or Maybe they already did.

Third problem i had is MAXED Constellation character.
The fact that we can get MAXED Constellation character in wishes, is a joke.
And what do we get from that? A 5 piece of token that can be exchange for an item, or buy another pieces of wishes.
This system is really2 bad. I can't see myself sticking this game for a long time if this mechanic remain the same. Maxed Constellation shouldn't be a thing other than making your spender suffer more.
Solution? Every dupe character will become an item to constellation other character. Simple right?
If we have 5 bottle of 4* constellation thing, allow us to combine it and become a single bottle of constellation that can be used for 5 star. The fact that that mihoyo chose the block constellation on wishes only, and maxed constl still appear in wishes. Is a proof of how greedy and unfriendly it's towards their customer.

For those who will reply this thread by saying it's a mobile game, so accept it or duh...
Well, broh... it's not. This game is trying to appeal to massive gamers, that's why it release on PC, Switch, and PS4. They even introduce this game as an open world and inviting us to explore their world. That is not a gacha mobile game. Unless they intend to normalize this culture, where open world are filled with this awful progression and monetization design.

There are still some point that i want to express how awful it's like chest, enemy design, awful BP design, and coop. But i'm just to lazy to type right now. Even with those 3 points alone, i can already see tons of hate is coming towards me since most game reddit thread are always, and will be, filled with fans that can't take criticism.
I know people didn't like their beloved game getting trashed on, but i'm not a freeloader, i'm not a player that only play 10 min and rage. I have played tons of hours and spent more than a casual players. I want this game to be better, that's why i voice my concern. Denying us, Yelling at us, angry at us, will not stop, nor change the awful part of this beautifully crafted world.. cough cough botw.

So yeah, i enjoy the game thoroughly. But changes are need if this game want PC gamers keep playing the game. Otherwise, only mobile gamers that tolerate such awful system will be the one remain in this game, they will be the one that Mihoyo can profit from. Thus, Rendering your promotion for bigger audience become a big waste.
P.S. : I saw a lot of people saying that "even if they remove the resin system, I will still complain for the lack of content."
For that, i will say that it's really not OK to make own assumption without knowing each other in real life.
Suppose that resin system is really removed from the game.
Well then, we'll be happy once we MAX out all of our character. :D
For example, me and my friend play Monster Hunter World.
Once we reach the top gear, we just wander around the world, helping newbie.
We understand that creating new content tooks time, that's why we didn't mad or sad once we reach it.
What we do after that is just asking more friend to join and play together while helping and teaching them at the same time.
Maybe it's because we play a lot of non-time-gated games, games that usually let us do whatever we want. That's why when we first play GI, we get annoyed so much because we literally can't progress unless put some cash on the resin. And that for us, is not fun. There's thing to do, but the system, restrict us.
Also, remember that the layers of GEAR RNG on ARTIFACT in this game is very heavy.
Even if you we get berserker set, there's no guaranteed that the attributes will be ATK or CRIT DMG.
So, the grind itself will be very long since chasing a perfect gear is very hard.
Which means, removing the resin system will add a big chunk of hours for all of us.
I hope you guys can understand my point.
P.S. : I'm truly speechless reading reply like "cuz it's gacha." Like, why do you support such bad design. :(
I guess, i found the answer for this one. And it's truly sad.
FadedFace : it's because they already bought into the system. They spent a ton into these kinds of games already, so the only way for them to not feel stupid about themselves is to convince themselves and the rest of the world that this is the correct way of doing thing. Otherwise, if the system change, their thousand of dollar sunk cost would go poof in smoke and they are left realizing that they didn't have to do any of that shit to begin with, and all they had to do was vote with their wallet, and they would have gotten the same experience for much less. Meanwhile, they keep feeding the sharks, so these companies see no reason to change the system to begin with, and the cycle continue.
The one argument I can't stand is the "well they have to make money somehow". Like the gaming industry wasn't already a billions dollar colossus before these gacha systems come into existence. There are ways that far more player friendly to make money, that have been in places way before this, but the kids somehow thought that these companies will go bankrupt if they didn't spend their retirement saving. Give me a fucking break.
P.S. : For those who say removing Resin will allow us blitz through content which is not good?
Well, i found one best answer for that from : u/julchiar
Games like diablo 2, path of exile and many more literally live through this and people spend thousands of hours trying to find the perfect gear, all without artificial limits like resin.
Since other games are able to pull it off, i don't see why GI can't do the same other than trying to monetize it all, including resin. And that's greedy.
P.S. : For those who said the games still young, thus give it time.
Sure, absolutely, but does not mean Criticism shouldn't exist.
I found couple of reply that serve as best answer for those statement :
Shakkyun : If people doesn't state the problems now, they'll take way too long to react tho. Epic Seven had some really bad issues, they took half a year to talk with the players and change things, and they did it when they got review bombed on the store, so better complain early than late tbh
Dutycalls406 : On a sidenote, the taptap reviews for Genshin are not looking very well at the moment (4.7/10). Chinese players are way ahead of us in pointing out what's wrong with the game. They have been doing it since beta testing. Meanwhile the Google play store reviews are a nearly perfect score.
Shakkyun : Once again, asia is saving us by being realistic in the long run, Korean saved us on Epic Seven with their reviews and complain, while the global was just mocking them as people who complain, but once everything changed everyone was actually thankful
Dutycalls406 : I noticed this behaviour in this subreddit too. A lot of times people would tell you "stop playing if you don't like it" or "it's a gacha game what did you expect?". Instead of thinking for a moment and understand what all this means for the game in the long run.
P.S : One last note for this post, i just want to say that for those defend the stamina system :
Do you guys realize that my intention is on this post, is asking for changes that will IMPROVE most player experience, not trashing the game.
Which is baffling for me to see people actually defending this predatory system.
Fun fact : Genshin Impact currently are sititng on 4.7 out of 10 in China Taptap review.
https://www.taptap.com/app/168332/review?score=1
What are they complain about? The resin, the gacha, the trash chest, etc.
It seems like china players are more aware of the problem than global.

[ALTTP] I'm not sure I'm enjoying A Link to the Past

I recently got the SNES Switch Online service, and after completing Super Metroid, started A Link to the Past. A little background for me; Zelda is possibly my all-time favorite game franchise (Wind Waker being my favorite entry), but prior to this, the oldest game in the series I've played was Ocarina of Time; my only experience with the original LoZ was the two-minute demo that came with Smash Brawl, and I've never played Adventure of Link in any capacity (I recently completed the Link's Awakening remake, but never played either the original or GB color version). Knowing how well this particular entry is regarded, I was quite excited to start it.

Almost immediately with LTTP however, I began to notice the drawbacks, and they started to overshadow the game's positive qualities; while the overworld isn't massive, getting around can be needlessly time consuming, and it doesn't help that when you die your options of where to start over are limited; it's not so bad in the light world, where you have three choices, but it's annoying as hell in the dark world, where unless you die in a dungeon it will always restart you at the top of that one pyramid, regardless of where on the map you were. I'll acknowledge that issue does still exist in OoT, but at least with that one there are so many shortcuts and ways to warp (not to mention Epona) it removes most of the hassle of getting around.
Speaking of dungeons, while not as extensive and complex as in other games (something I consider neither good nor bad, just unique maybe), having to repeat some of the same puzzles every time you entere-enter a room gets tiresome and repetitive. And while dying in a dungeon does have advantages location-wise in some instances, I really don't like saving and quitting my game in a dungeon, only to find myself halfway across the map when I return later. As I write this I'm currently on the Skull woods, at the moth boss. The only effective way to hurt it is the flame rod, but I usually run out of magic during-or occasionally before-the battle. I know the sword and hammer are effective, but you have to get close enough that the boss can do some pretty devastating damage to you and you can't even tell if you were successful or not at damaging them.
My biggest pet peeve with the game is probably how health works; while I admire the sparkle attack with your sword when all your hearts are fill (seriously I'd love to see the series come back to that in BOTW2-or any future entry), what I really dislike is how scarce hearts tend to be; yeah you can purchase life potions, but I don't want to have to keep going out of my way for those. Hearts don't seem to pop up all that often when you smash a rock or skull or cut grass-even killing enemies can be a gamble if you're low. And while the warning sound the game makes when your health falls below a certain threshold has never been my favorite aspect of the games, it's at its worst in this game. Of course maybe it never bothered me before because I usually found enough hearts to stop it within seconds. In this game, hearts can be so few and far between it's usually easier to let yourself be killed. And in regards to being hurt or killed, the enemy attacks do more damage than most non-bosses in other Zelda games outside BOTW (and at least that one if you die you restart at or near where you last were).
Now I don't want to be totally down on the game. While the graphics are old, they are still quite excellent and pleasant to look at. The control scheme, while slow at times, is usually pretty easy to understand and master. And I like how not only is the full world map available at the start, but it clearly points out where to go next. Truthfully speaking, I think my perception of the game would be far more positive if it were the first (or even second) Zelda title I ever played.
I also acknowledge that most of these problems are almost certainly not the fault of Nintendo or the development team. I'm almost certain a lot of these can be chalked up to the limited capabilities of the SNES cartridge and hardware, and I have little doubt these problems probably exist on the first two games and original release of LA. Although with some dungeon rooms so crowded with enemies, i'd think removing just one or two of them would've allowed for something like hearts being more common, although I'm no computer programming expert, so I could be dead wrong on that part.
Despite how hard I may seem on the game, I would certainly NOT call it the "worst" Zelda title I've ever played, not by a long shot. That distinction remains with Four Swords Adventures. The thing with that one, however, is the fact that it just seemed kind of vanilla and uninspiring compared to other titles. This does include Link to the Past to a certain extent, but I'm not so sure this game's impact is necessarily for the better.
I can see why so many people like this particular Zelda game, and I really want to like it myself and finish it, but it's just becoming so tedious and frustrating. I am aware of the GBA remake; obviously I never played it, but I wouldn't mind hearing if it's much better or worse than the original. And truth be told, while I don't expect Nintendo to jump on this anytime soon, I do think ALTTP could benefit from a Link's Awakening 2019-style remake; many people who played the original LA seem to agree that the new version improved on the game almost all for the better.

Can someone tell me what games I like please

After spending £50 on xenoblade chronicles, a game very well reviewed across the board, I’ve realised that JRPGs are not for me. This has really stung because I cannot find games that I enjoy so I have to take huge gambles when deciding what to spend my money on, the games that I do enjoy seem to beat no similarities either so I’m not even sure where to start when looking for new games, so I have two questions here; how do you get over wasting money on a video game that you didn’t like in the first few hours? And can anyone give me a good recommendation for a game?
The games I do enjoy include; Hollow Knight, Zelda BOTW, The Binding of Isaac, Animal Crossing and basically any 3D Mario game, also I play on switch if that wasn’t already obvious

With all the Zhongli controversy, here's an opinion piece as to why Nintendo may have let Mihoyo conquer the mobile scene for now.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-12-04-did-genshin-impact-swipe-an-opportunity-from-under-nintendos-nose-opinion
Author opinion:: Nintedo values brand integrity above all. Having learned from Pokemon Go, FE:H, etc. and past mobile titles, a controversy like low gacha rates or Zhongli would devalue their brand and thus detract from their IP. They are taking a slow-burn approach, being generous and methodical in their expansion of their IP. So maybe there won't be a Zelda BoTW mobile any time soon, yet at least they can claim that Zelda will still be relevant and highly regarded 10 years from now and that would give them plenty of time to develop a fully-realized mobile title down the line should they so choose. So they might lose out on immediate profit, but banking on long-term gains and brand prestige.
Please give the article a read before scrolling past this point as some things I said might make more sense if you already done that.
My opinion: What is Mihoyo trying to do with Genshin? To make a quick buck? Or to establish a franchise with this?
If it's the former- to make a quick buck, then they sure are succeeding. Genshin has so far grossed over $250 million in two months from mobile alone. Data seems to show that the trend wont die down any time soon. I predict that with all the Zhongli controversy, numbers would still be going strong. Controversy creates engagement, and engagement would eventually lead to higher attachment to their game. Mihoyo knows what they are doing as their business model is backed up by psychological research around sunk-cost fallacy and gambling. There is a whole industry built around the psychology of spending and user engagement that aim to establish the perfect sweet spot between player satisfaction and frustration. Unlike most people may think, frustration is not a bad thing. It is another ingredient that contributes to engagement. As people think more about something, they are slowly programming their brain to divert more resources towards that thing. Long-term, this may happen so naturally that one would almost not even consider the potential nature of that thing and whether it is to your self-interest. In the case of frustration, that is balanced out by the bits of satisfaction sprinkled in. That dose of dopamine hit to make the frustration all worth the while. That is the psychology of gambling addiction.
If it's the latter- to establish a franchise, then they are not achieving their intended goal. Due to their many controversies, Mihoyo' games, while excellent, would always be tainted with the stain of predatory micro-transactions and business practices. I almost did not try out Genshin because of my experience in Honkai, being a low spending competitive player. Mihoyo games are a duality. They are both known for excellent graphics and gameplay, as well as their inexorbitantly priced- micro transactions and myriad hurdles in player progression. Now one can argue that these are the nature of gacha games and you are right. It is the nature of gacha that players will never be able to fully enjoy the game's experience and immerse in it fully. There will always be a roadblock somewhere just waiting for your credit card to unlock. In Genshin, the low gacha rates to get characters, the Resin system, the constellation locked characters are perfect examples. Players may be attracted to the combat and gameplay, but due to the ostentatious and intrusive display of micro-transactions there will always be a tacit understanding that it is a "product" rather than "art". In other words, the desired "prestige" of being something akin to the pristine Zelda is unachievable. Nintendo has done a great job in image/ IP management that they almost always ensure any release of Zelda would garner high critical acclaim. In a sense, Nintendo wants to be associated with being an entity that creates "art" that elevates a genre, and Mihoyo, inadvertedly, would have to settle as the imitator that distributes a "product".
I thought a lot about what Genshin might mean for the mobile game industry, being something that has never been done before on this scale. It is clear the ambition and desire to innovate is there. It is also clear that there is another side to this that constantly is detracting from this intention. I had hoped that Genshin would set a high bar for mobile gaming and would be the genesis of a new kind of art that would elevate the scene. My hope has diminished quite a bit over the last two months with each update. Although, i am still hopeful that Mihoyo knows about this is would be making changes to their game model.

I HATE Nintendo

I guess I'll throw my hat into the ring because as a WiiU owner (yes 1 of the 7) I feel nothing but contempt for this braindead company as a life long supporter of it. The reasons are many but I suppose I'll start off with a fun fact. Did you know that Nintendo released a bootleg WiiU and called it a new console. THE SWITCH. *Bu dum tss*
Tonnes of missing basic os features (virtual console, folders(SERIOUSLY?!), functional online, simple UI customisation, anything friends related, etc), poorly designed hardware (worthless touch controls, joycon drift and nobody actually likes holding the joycons), mediocre original titles (with Odyssey and smash being 2 of the few only good 1st party games), the GOD DAMN PORTS! (Which by the way have no purchase transferability :D) and no support for legacy games that need it (What's a GameCube?) while haphazardly giving away games that don't (remember the Nintendo online giving away only NES games at launch XD). At least I know what kind of garbage I'm getting myself into if I ever buy a GAME from your standard list of bas*** developers, but Nintendo did the unthinkable and literally sold me a worthless CONSOLE.
Now 2 common responses I've encountered are something along the lines of the following... "They are not abusing loot boxes and getting kids addicted to gambling the same way EA and other greedy publishers are" and/or "They not selling incomplete, messy games at full retail price" To the first point you haven't seen their mobile Mario kart and Fire emblem games (and to a lesser extent Xenoblade 2) have you... To the second you're right! They're selling games that aught to given heavy discounts for being a decade(s) old at full retail price (with the excuse that either the DLC is free or some small mode was added), while they let The Pokemon Company (which they partially own) sell "incomplete, messy games at full retail price"
And their games OH THEIR GAMES. Need I go into the countless debates on why modern Paper Mario sucks. What about anything to do with Pokemon SW SH? How about the fact they removed touchscreen functionality for the WiiU port of BOTW so the switch version didn't look like the inferior. Or their countless arbitrary decisions that just make games worse for the sake of it. (Extra moons in odyssey being locked until post game and excess moons being worthless until said postgame, animal crossing having 1 island per switch, Splatoon 2 ONLY EXTRA MODE being locked on random days or whatever the heck they are doing to Mario party and why is every modern mario spin off so god damn generic) And never mind the games that just had no demand being made! Hey pikmin, Mario party 10, Chibi Robo zip lash, animal crossing amiibo festival, paper mario colour splash (I would comment on unwanted switch titles if they actually made original games for it XD oh wait there's 1, 2, switch...)
And don't even get me started on how they treat their community. I think I speak on behalf of every Nintendo fan (especially as of late) when I say. DEAR GOD NINTENDO PLEASE JUST F OFF. You have NO GOD DAMN PLACE to shut down a gaming tournaments for using a slightly modified version of a game which you NO LONGER SUPPORT OR SELL, WHICH WAS ONLY MODIFIED IN ORDER NOT TO CATCH THE PLAUGE!! You have not a god damn say in how online content creators use your products. And why the hell can independent fans who know their game will blasted into oblivion make more fun and functional games than your multiple teams of full time professionals at your multibillion dollar company? (Project M, Pokemon Urainium,AM2R, I could go on!)
SOME of the reasons I'm sick of this company. I'm sure there's a treasure trove of arguments out there I could add (There stance on piracy, denial of joycon drift, supply and demand issues for amiibo, nes and snes classic, making console mods illegal in japan, limited digitial release for games like 3d all stars) and many more that I've forgotten to mention and hundreds more of examples I could've incorporated, but these were the most impactful personally and/or relevant and I don't have eternity to write a reddit post.
And while I'm sure many would agree with my points individually most don't abandon Nintendo in spite of them because they make good games. I've abandoned them. They are no better to me then the half assed devs at Bethesda, or the scum that is EA, or the leeches at Activision, or the hell spawn of Konami, or the censorious and hypocritical sony. I've had enough of the narsacistic Nintendo. The modern Nintendo.
Signed: Ex life long Nintendo fan
Edit: I don't think every switch game aside from Odyssey and smash are bad. They are just the only one's I've played and enjoyed that are original on the switch. Some games aren't to my liking and some I haven't played

List of all mini-games in BOTW

I've recently seen a post that discovered a deer hunting mini-game and a lot of people were suprised so I decided to make a list of all of the mini-games in BOTW! I hope you will discover something new, like a new favourite mini-game for example!
Bird-Man Research Study:
At the top of Ridgeland Tower - you have to glide as far as you can from the top of the tower
Boom Bam Golf:
Below the Tabantha Great Bridge - you have to use stasis to get the ball with as few strikes as possible
Carry the Ice!:
You have to complete "The Perfect Drink" shrine quest first. You can start the mini-game in the ice house north of Gerudo Town - you have to bring the ice cube across the ruins like in the shrine quest
Deer Hunting:
The reason why I made this, you can find it on the farm between Hateno Village and the Ancient Tech Lab - you have to eliminate as many deer as possible within a short period of time
Flight Range:
After Divine Beast Vah Medoh you can speak to Teba in Rito Village and he will go to the Flight Range with his son - speak to his son there and you will have to eliminate as many targets as possible within a short period of time
Footrace:
North of Tabantha Bridge Stable at Footrace Check-In - you have to reach the top of the mountain before the quest giver
Gambling:
In Lurelin Village - you can pay a guy in one of the houses for the opportunity to open of of three chests, one will contain a green rupee, the other the amount you paid him amd the last one the amount you paid him times three or two (I don't remember really), which chest contains what is pure RNG
Horseback Archery:
If the devil was born as a mini-game it would be either this or the Obstacle Course (up to you really, for me it is the archery one). This game is found in the Mounted Archery Camp south of the Lake Tower. To trigger it you have to be on horseback - you have to shoot the targets while on horseback within a shirt period of time. As a reward you get a knight's bridle if you shoot 20 targets and knight's saddle for 23 targets (if you want both you have to do it twice)
Obstacle Course:
It wasn't that bad for me but I know there are people who hate it. You have to be on horseback again and have to speak to someone at Highland Stable - you have to run through the obstacle course in 1:30 seconds if you want the extravagant bridle and 1:15 seconds if you want tge extravagant saddle
Paraglider Course:
You need to complete the "Stranded on Eventide" shrine quest first. You need to speak to a Rito outside of the shrine on Eventide Island - you have to pass through rings while gliding and the game will end when you touch the ground
Restoring the Blue Flame:
Available after "Robbie's Research" side quest. There is a woman at East Akkala Stable that will trigger the game for you - you need to light the lantern next to her with a blue flame as soon as possible
Sand-Seal Racing:
You have to conplete the shrine quest "The Undefeated Champ" first. You can start the game at the Sand-Seal Rally south of Gerudo Town. It's the same race as in the shrine quest
Shield-Surfing:
In Selmie's Spot in Hebra Mountains - you shield-surf (ikr), there's a begginer course and after you have done it in under 1:00 Selmie will give you two dialogue options, choose the shrug option and you'll unlock the Advanced Course
Snowball Bowling:
Northeast of Hebra Tower in Pondo's Lodge - you have to knock down the pins at the bottom of the hill with a big snowball
Super Gut Check Challenge:
You have to complete the "Gut Check Challenge" shrine quest first. It's located at Gut Check Rock north of Death Mountain - the same as the shrine quest but you have to collect more rupees
The Test of Wood - Revisited:
After the "Test of Wood" shrine quest you can do the same trial, but you are only borrowing the equipment and have five minutes to complete the challenge
I hope you will learn something new from this post

Looking for Switch games; RPG, platformers, open world, farming and/or monster collecting

With Christmas and discounts I have enough to buy some new games on Switch!
Genres I love: RPG, platfomers, monster collecting, farming, open world, metroidvania
Genres I don't care much for: sports, racing, shooters, boardgames, cardgames, pay to win gacha/gambling (no p2w is fine)
On a limited budget I also tend to prioritize Switch exclusives first, but it's not a must have requirement
I already have these on Switch or other systems: Smash Ultimate, BOTW, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Hades, Ori 2, Minecraft, Stardew valley, Hollow knight, Animal crossing, Okami, Chocobo mystery dungeon, Crystal chronicles, Divinity 2, mainline final fantasy games, octopath (borrowed from brother)
I'm considering these:
Monster hunter stories 2 (when it comes out)
World of final fantasy maxima
Rayman legends
Ni no kuni wrath of the white witch
Dragon quest builders
Evergate
Gleamlight
Inmost
Little dragon's cafe
Monster boy
Windbound
Yonder cloud catcher chronicles
Fire Emblem 3 houses (waiting for price drop)
Kirby star allies (waiting for price drop)
Pokemon mystery dungeon DX (waiting for price drop)
That's all I could find for now! Are there any on the list you recommend highly? Any I didn't list? Any I listed you DON'T recommend?

Why I personally feel that some towns in Breath of the Wild worked and some didn't, and what could be done to improve them in the sequel

When it comes to BotW, most people will talk about how, in terms of Divine Beast quests, not all of them were created equal. They cite the time spent on building up the lore of places like Zora's Domain compared to the fairly simple Rito quest. However, I think this problem goes a bit deeper in that not every town is created equal, and it's for a very simple reason.
Some towns feel like they are built to be lived in, and some feel like they are built to be visited.
I'll explain. The town that most people talk about in BotW is Gerudo Town. Not only were the Gerudo given a much needed boost in culture and lore, but their actual town was so deep with things to discover and locations to hang out in. There's a town square with stalls selling various goods, back alleys with just a few passing residents and the goddess statue, a sand seal stable near the edge of the town, a garden you can start, a whole waterway system, and a ton of optional buildings to be entered from bars to libraries to classrooms. It feels alive. It feels like it existed before players arrived and it will continue to exist after they leave. This is a place where you could easily map out a resident's every day activities.
Compare that to Goron City. This town has an entrance, some metal bridges connecting two shops and an inn, empty houses that are basically just caves, Bludo's house which has a chair and a bed, and an outdoor grilling place. If you go a bit outside the city, you can find a mining spot, some hot springs, and mine tracks. That's really it. There is no central area where you could picture all the Gorons hanging out or celebrating. There are no buildings that would be used by residents like the Gerudo's bar or classroom, just shops for tourists. One of which literally only sells armor the Gorons don't need. The houses don't feel lived in. Whereas in Riju's room in Gerudo Town you can find unique decorations and a diary and sand seal stuffed animals, every Goron house looks the same, just having a bed and maybe a game of what looks like a version of checkers.
Other towns in the game fall somewhere within this framework. Towns like Kakariko Village or Zora's Domain are closer to Gerudo Town in terms of world building while Rito Village is honestly even worse than Goron City. Korok Forest is another that's really small without much to it, but due to the nature of the Koroks and the way it's framed it actually works out really well. Everything the Koroks sell are specifically meant to be sold to Link. They don't need houses because they just live and play in the forest. They have their own set of trials that make use of the forest around them.
I'd like to briefly touch on the major villages of the game and talk about what I think should be added to them in order to bring them all up to a similar level of being lived-in and populated. I won't be talking about Gerudo Town, Korok Forest, Hateno, Lurelin Village, or Tarrey Town, because I felt those were generally good at accomplishing the lived-in feeling or at least accomplishing the specific goal they set out to accomplish. For example, Tarrey Town may be small without much to do, but it is a town that is basically built by the player as a side quest, so it's really just getting started.
In order for a town to feel lived-in and not just there for player entertainment, there has to be something there that feels like it's a place for the average citizen to go. The Zelda series has a long history of putting fun side activities in their towns. The main town of Zelda games always has some kind of side thing to do, whether that be the various shooting galleries, claw games, fishing holes, gambling spaces, or what have you. Majora's Mask had things like the Goron races and Zora concert hall. The Oracle Games gave the Gorons a passion for dance. Gerudo Town in BotW as said before has a central square, a bar, a library, a classroom, and even an official sand seal racetrack right outside the town that opens up upon completion of the Divine Beast. Hateno doesn't necessarily have all of this, but every house feels populated and customized to its inhabitants. And the kids playing in the main area of town show that there are things to do to have fun, and space to do it in. Lurelin has fishing and gambling. But the others are sorely lacking this.
Kakariko Village is honestly the best at this of the ones I'm addressing here. While there aren't any buildings that seem to have a purpose beyond tourism, the Sheikah Heirloom sidequest shows a great deal of depth to the schedules around the town, there's a graveyard off to one side, there are areas growing crops that you aren't supposed to touch. It generally feels like it isn't just built to be a playground for Link. Even still, it is possible that a few things could be added such as a library with lore about the Sheikah's connection to the Hylian royal family or perhaps the return of that guessing game from Ocarina of Time that could be cheated with the Lens of Truth. Things to do in the town besides just talking to NPCs and watching them walk around. Again though, Kakariko Village is about on the level of Hateno when it comes to this.
Zora's Domain is a mixed bag. The area with Mipha's Statue is a good central square type area, but every building seems less like a building and more just like another part of a branching path. They aren't enclosed spaces, they are just areas with archways and ceilings that contain goods to sell. The Zora don't have houses, they just have a weird central pool that they all float in to sleep. There is nothing for the average Zora to do beyond swimming around in the water. There are a few things the sequel could add, some of which could even just be an evolution of things seen in the original game. For example, the sidequest in which you take a picture of all of the Zora stone monuments could lead to him setting up a new building with this gathered information. Gruve could have turned his diving sidequest into a game for young Zora, similar to the diving game in OoT. The path to Shatterback Point could be well-marked now that the Lynel is gone and be a popular place to hang out and dive off the highest point. Now that Vah Ruta is calmed, the reservoir could have some attractions within it up on floating platforms like in Lake Hylia in Twilight Princess. Or, it could be explained that the Zora's houses are deep underwater in the reservoir and that's why they aren't in the main village that tourists see. Just make this feel more like a place where the Zora actually live.
For a place called Goron City, it really doesn't feel very sprawling. I already described my issues with it before and I won't repeat them here, but what's funny is that the Gorons have a few activities or games, but none of them are actually in Goron City. The hot springs are the closest, but then you have the game of golf down in a pit in the Tabantha Region (if I remember correctly) and you have the Goron Blood Brothers in a few areas giving Link the challenge of scaling Gut Check Rock or withstanding intense heat for awhile. If more things like this were moved into the town proper, we'd already be getting somewhere. Obviously this would mean the addition of a more central area or just more size in general to accommodate. However, if they wanted to keep things spread out, they could make Goron City actually live up to its name and have the Gorons basically colonize all of Death Mountain. Have a new Gut Check Rock be on a marked trail from the Goron City area we explored in the first game. Have a golf course set up somewhere behind it. Make a big stadium area somewhere near the base where players can watch and bet on Goron races. Have a restaraunt that's meant for the Gorons as they only sell various forms of rock roast, and the chef's supply could come from that one area on the mountain that had a Shrine Quest involving rock roast similar to how Gerudo Town had their ice supply off in the desert. And obviously, make the Goron's houses feel like actual houses. Give them doors maybe. Have some rooms with etchings made on stone slabs hung on the walls and others with kitchens that consist of big kettles full of lava that rocks are cooked in. Things to give the Gorons more everyday activities.
Everything said before is especially important for the Rito. Their village is one single spiral up the main tall rock with occasional buildings off to the sides. The structure of their homes is the same as the structure of general stores. They have the flight range which is only ever visited by Teba and his son and doesn't seem like a very busy place. And they have Warbler's Nest on a cliff away from the village which is a bunch of rocks in a circle that the Rito themselves don't even use to make music. I think in the sequel we should see more Rito flying to these far off destinations to make them feel more inhabited. Almost the only bit of Rito lore we get in the game is that male Rito like archery and female Rito like singing. So have some male Rito NPCs be programmed to, at certain times of day, take off from Revali's Landing to fly to the flight range and practice their archery. And have the female Rito NPCs do the same to go to Warbler's nest, which is now more decorated with maybe gazebo-like structures and instruments, like a legitimate outdoor practice space. To really kick things up a notch, I think there should be a higher area with no bridges connecting it. The Rito, and Link with his paraglider, are able to use the updrafts to access it. Here is where we'd see the more Rito-exclusive activities. A central square setup with a stage to perform concerts on and seating which the Rito flock to for dinner and a show, with outdoor bars to walk up to and order from.
The biggest thing to keep in mind with my suggested changes is that it's not asking for anything the game hasn't done before. All that would be added are minigames that can already be found elsewhere in the world, and sidequests that other villages have in bulk. If you need further proof that some villages dropped the ball in this regard, look up the sidequests in BotW divided by location. You'll see tons taking place just in Gerudo Town or Kakariko village, while Goron City has...a Goron asking you to find his brother and a Goron asking you to fight a Talus. All these changes would do is expand on the pre-existing towns and bring them up to the same level as the better examples in the game, which I don't think is asking for too much when the world itself is already created and based on interviews it seems additions are the name of the game.
TL;DR: The towns in BotW are a mixed bag and I think adding more activities to some to make them feel more alive and lived-in is a must for the sequel.

Genshin Impact is a terrible game

There I said it. Sure praise it for its graphics and BoTW style but take all that away and you're left with a boring ass game that wants to suck your wallet dry with its horrendous rates. Want a new character? Too bad heres a .6% chance to get it.
The gameplay is boring and repetitive, not much challenge or variety and the microtransactions are made to prey on gambling addictions.
If you want to see a f2p game done right look at Warframe, getting good weapons and characters you want and upgrading them without having to gamble on a low percent chance with premium currency? Hell yea.

My Opinion on Genshin Impact

First, let me get this out of the way: I love this game. I'm sure all of the people on this sub do too; otherwise, we wouldn't be on this sub, talking about this game in the first place.
The fighting's fun, the rock-paper-scissors aspect with the elements is fun, the characters are all unique and have something for everyone, and the potential team compositions are varied just enough and can make for some powerful teams that can take down even the most impossible of quests. The lore is interesting enough to keep me hooked, and I love the general feel of the game. What got me hooked was its comparison to BOTW, and now that I've played it for likely 20+ hours at this rate, I can say I like it better, gameplay-wise, as Breath of the Wild.
If I were to rate it right now, I'd give it a solid 9/10.
However, I personally have not gone into the endgame yet. I just finished fighting Dvalin, and have barely gotten into the next half of the map, past Mondstadt.
But there are issues. Some I've only heard, and some I've experienced myself. I'm sure most people already know, but in case you don't, here is (some) of the complaints.
1.) I've heard that once you reach Adventure Rank 29, it starts to get menial. The curve flattens, and you're kind of just going through the motions. You also run around and pick up chests that don't give anything of value.
2.) Resin is awful, even I know that. 120 energy, and they only give you so much Fragile Resin. 20 per node, and bosses give 40. What?
3.) The gacha. My god, is this gacha bad. I feel lucky to even have one five star, but I know some friends who only have a bunch of four and five star weapons, and didn't get a single character that wasn't guaranteed. 0.6%. That's really bad, and the rate-ups are pretty abysmal too (50%, I think).
That's only a few. I'm sure there are more, comment those since I likely missed them, but these seem to be the main points.
However, I like to walk the silver line. I'm sure we all want this game to be successful- only sociopaths want good things to fail miserably. This game has lots of potential, and if they just capitalized on that potential, they'd be looking at the most successful gacha game ever and one of the most successful JRPGs ever.
But that potential is held back by the problems. But I ask everyone: patience?
I know. This game has been in beta for a while now, and it seems from the CN reviews, they didn't listen to the Chinese market's advice, either (idk if they're bots or whatever, but regardless, it's still clear the game has problems)
But still...I think waiting it out, and seeing what they do with the advice they give us will be beneficial. Don't straight up drop the game when it just came out.
Remember, this is a gacha game. Yes it's other genres, but it's clear that, by the free price and gamble-not-gamble system, that it's a gacha game.
And all gacha games play for months. Years.
I can think of one game in particular that had a similar start as Genshin Impact. Yeah, it wasn't as big and was more contained in one community, but it had similar issues at the very start that many players didn't like. However, as time went on, the game slowly improved, and is now standing near the top of the most successful and longest-lasting gacha games of all time: Fate/Grand Order.
If any of you are FGO fans, you remember how bad the start was. Animations were crap, the story was crap, the gacha was crap- quite frankly, everything was crap. Comparing it to Genshin Impact now is like comparing a Filet Mignon to freakin' beef jerky. Genshin fans have it lucky- at least the game was FUN to play.
But slowly, as the months went on, FGO got better. After a year, the 6th chapter hit, and the story began to get really good. Then, slowly, Servants' animations updated. The story got even better, events got more fleshed out, the developers became more generous, and the gacha rates improved, if ever so slightly. FGO had a 0.7% rate up level: now it's 0.8%, with an extra roll every ten rolls.
What I'm saying is (before I break any rules about talking about other games too much): Genshin Impact and FGO have kinda similar starts. They both had really bad issues, and we complained about it. But if we give it time, just like FGO, Genshin has real potential to become something great.
And besides: unlike FGO, Genshin has a lot more eyes on it, and thus lots more scrutiny. They'll have to listen to advice, or else they'll never make a huge profit like they were hoping, let alone even breaking even.
That's the biggest comparison I can draw, which is why I'm not too upset at Genshin's faults, because I know games that have gone through worse but ended up coming through the mud as shining beacons of the gacha industry. Genshin has waaaaaay more potential and popularity than FGO- it already surpassed it in downloads, now what matters is keeping that fanbase.
If Mihoyo does what DelightWorks did, they can most definitely turn it around. But it'll take time. I'd give it a few months. If you're planning on rushing the game: try not to. Gacha games aren't meant to be rushed, they're meant to be played over time. Even if it looks and feels like an RPG, it's still a gacha game at heart, so I personally treat it as such.
And that's my thoughts, basically. Sorry if it seemed all over the place, I just had a lot to talk about.
I love this game. I really hope it becomes the best it can be.

Looking to trade! I have over 100 confirmed trades :) Right now I am mostly looking for the wants I have listed below, especially the high priority stuff, but I may be open to offers. Just please do not be offended if I say no!

p.p.s. If we are going to trade, all I ask is please be honest about the condition of your items. I can provide pictures for anything I have, please be willing to do the same! Thanks!

[USA-NJ] [H] 2DS Console, games for most Nintendo consoles, PS1/2, Nintendo Powers, collectibles [W] CIB's: Fire Emblem, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Mega Man X Command Mission with card, list, offers

Adding a bunch of items since my last post!
I have 90+ confirmed trades. Also, fair warning, these lists are long, I have a lot of stuff for trade! Looking to do fair value but where I have an item that is worn / in poor shape I value that lower than eBay averages due to condition. Also bolded items are hard trades and I usually only trade limited print Switch games for other limited print Switch games (with some exceptions).
p.s. "CIB" means complete, as in including all the booklets and such that were supposed to come in there, otherwise I will clarify what is included. "NIB" means New In Box, aka sealed, "brand new," in the shrink, etc.
