Just finished season 1 episode 1 and ready to binge the whole series.

I have never seen this show (or any clips) beforehand so I'm going in completely blind (did the same with scrubs just a few days ago) and man the first episode was really good especially that ending, caught me off guard. hopefully these other episodes also throw me off guard!
Edit 1: So far because I've never seen this show I recognize the cast from other forms of media and every time I see Marshall I just think the guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall lmao and when I see NPH I just think the guy from the Harold and Kumar trilogy lol
Edit 2: Lol is that Bob Saget narrating?
Edit 3: hahaha NPH's character reminds me of him in the Harold and Kumar movies
Edit 4: hahahaha his jacket got set on fire
Edit 5: I barely notice the laugh track is there, it's not as loud as other show's laugh tracks but it's still kind of weird and noticeable at times, why is it there anyways?
Edit 6: Finished season 1 and damnn, that was a good first season!
Edit 7: Just finished season 2 episode 22, these last few episodes were the better ones of the season
Edit 8: Season 3 episode 1 - Dary!
Edit 9: Season 4 episode 21 - It's what Jesus would have wanted.
Edit 10: Season 4 episode 22 - WHAAA, ARE YOU KIDDING MEEEE, got me lol
Edit 11: Season 5 episode 5- Holy fucking shit, I know I've been feeling this through the whole series but now it's just cemented. Sorry if this causes backlash, but I fucking hate lily.
Edit 12: Season 6 episode 8- Dude wtf. Lily told him a few seasons ago to get this thing and when he did get it she was happy, now she's saying the complete opposite. Like aren't you still in major "SPOILERS"? like wtffffff. ahhhh I hate Lily man.
Edit 13: Season 8 episode 1- YOOOO
Edit 14: Season 8 episode 12 - man this episode was so fucking good
Edit 15: Season 8 episode 13 - YOOOOOOOOOOOO
Edit 16: Season 8 episode 17 - lmaooo this is literally the funniest episode I've watched, I have laughed out loud so many times especially when Barny comes in with the guitar loll
Edit 17: Season 9 finale - Uhhhh. Okay. This series was so fucking good and this season was kind of butt, but the ending? come on man. Oh well I'm just glad I finally got to watch it.

LA times - pushing their views onto the wiki

The Cobra Kai Wiki page has been edited to include the following passage - I can't remove as its semi-protected.
"Cultural impact
After the debut of the third season, Jen Yamato of The Los Angeles Times noted in January 2021 that, “there are now three white men at the center of Cobra Kai, a franchise rooted in and deeply indebted to Eastern tradition.”[73] While she notes that in this season Yuji Okumoto and Tamlyn Tomita reprised their roles from The Karate Kid II, Cobra Kai "has yet to cast an Asian lead."[73] She also quoted Ana-Christina Ramon who argues that "except for the Latino character of Miguel, all the other people of color are outside of that main cast, so it actually doesn’t show as a diverse show in a sense."[73] Yamato further states that Ralph Macchio "pushed" for Tomita and Okumoto's return, and she quotes one of the show's writers, Schlossberg, as stating: “Having made Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle we’ve been particularly sensitive to Asian American representation in movies and television.”[73] The writers also note that while there are currently no writers of Asian descent on staff, they have turned to Tomita, Okumoto, the stunt coordinator Hiro Koda, and the original Karate Kid screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen for guidance.[73] "

Am I a shitlib?

Ok, so I'm Asian.
The reason this is relevant is because I enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians, and just recently watched Harold and Kumar for the first time (funny thing, it was actually brought up to me a lot due to one of my friendships aligning with that movie lol, I just finally got to it).
Am I a shitlib for appreciating the fact that a media portrayal showed Asians differently than the standard minority myth shit that has followed me my entire life, and that a movie had a full cast of Asian people, something that has always been seen as out of place?
I don't fetishize over their race, and I don't think patronizing people is a good thing. But is appreciating something for the value it brings to the marketplace of ideas so bad? Honestly I dunno if it's just me, but Harold and Kumar is just so amazing for showing how non-minority myth Asian people can be, because so many people I know constantly prattle on about the Asian work ethic and focus on education and I want to slap them.
I see a lot of posts here about people who do things I find very distasteful, like patronizing people for just having a job, using minorities as a prop, etc. And that's gross.
But am I a bad person for liking minority representation in media when it breaks stereotypes, but also in general (ie I've seen Friends, Seinfeld, etc. Master of None had a good scene about how there can only be so one Asian person in a show, there was not Asian representation in media for a long time, and there's something to be said about relating to people who look like yourself, this goes for things like physical appearance, disability, age, height, etc.)
Like low key I'm just gonna link scenes from Harold and Kumar whenever someone mentions how Asians work so hard and have such focus on education. And I need things like this so I can show people have fucking dumb they are generalizing like this.
Here's a follow-up question. I've always believed it is incredibly important that people have the opportunity to succeed, and I believe that many people right now do not actually have access to such opportunities, which creates a lack of stability in communities and guiding figures. Many young men and women grow up without having strong role models and people to look up to in their communities. This is significantly a function of policy decisions and how we've approached things like mass incarceration and Economic Opportunity. So is someone posts on social media to show someone doing things like a doctor posting about his own journey from poverty, or a disabled veteran becoming a successful businessperson, or a woman becoming the head of a university engineering department (generally engineering is fairly male dominated, I say this as an engineer who's graduated class was much more male than female), or someone who works with women in engineering programs to connect more young women with professional engineers, or that humans of new York channel or whatever I think I've seen that sometimes shows stories like this, are these bad things?
I generally support these things, but they seem very very close to what people are discussing here as bad. Can someone give me a quick rundown of what specifically makes something go from good idpol to bad idpol? Or does no one support idpol here?
First post, sorry.
Tldr:
Am I a shitlib?
Is it bad I like Asian representation in media?
How about social media posts?
Is there a good idpol?

Am I a shitlib?

Ok, so I'm Asian.
The reason this is relevant is because I enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians, and just recently watched Harold and Kumar for the first time (funny thing, it was actually brought up to me a lot due to one of my friendships aligning with that movie lol).

John Cho shouldn't play Spike - Cowboy Bebop (Live Action) from Netflix

John Cho, despite his beautiful achievement representing asian men around the World with his Harold and Kumar movies, should not play Spike, the lead character in Cowboy Bebop.
Spike is 27. John is 48. Almost 20 years age difference.
We need a new younger face for asian male representation.
The latest movie with Cho, he was playing a dad (Searching). He's old. He doesn't represent the younger generations of asian men and his sex appeal thus only attracts older women.
It doesn't help us, the younger generations, millenials or the upcoming Gen Z growing up because teenagers boys and girls, will not be able to identify with him, either as the hero or lover.
We need new younger talent in Hollywood. The problem of using the same asian guy over and over again, hurts the diversity that we can project on screen. We need tall, short, geeky, fat, ugly, skinny, fit, bald or hairy asian guys in multiple roles thus providing a better representation for all of us and also allowing women to be attracted to all types of asian men.
Think of it this way.
Western attractive guys where girls are all drooling over:
Noah Centineo, Robert Pattinson, Zac Efron, Thimothee Chalamet, Ansel Elgort
You got all kinds. The jock, tall, short, skinny and ugly guy.
Going forward too, we need more and more new YOUNG asian male talents. Let's not just confine and narrow all our talents into 40+ years old actors like: Jet Li, Jackie Chan, John Cho and soon Henry Golding.
We need to mold and shape young asian actors who can tackle movies for young people.
I hope we can get this going viral of some sort and spread the message.

Also, Cowboy Bebop (Live Action) from Netflix, of course won't stick to the base source and will make stuff up, like casting a white guy, Stults, to play this new character Chalmers, who is dating Jet Black (Japanese in manga, but played by black guy in Netflix) 's ex-wife.
Also, Ann Truong (AF) and Hoa Xuande (AM) ''will play Shin and Lin who serve as Vicious’ twin Syndicate henchman... they are fiercely loyal to Vicious (White guy played by Alex Hassell) in his quest ... to take down Spike Spiegel.''
So they cast 2 asians: female and male, only to perpetrate the stereotypes that they are brothers and sisters. Not lovers. No not for our asian guy. The white guy Stults, on the other hand, yes he gets laid with (probably) an asian female. Also, bad guys = asians, again, who are ''loyal'' to their boss, a white guy, again, like during the colonial era. Another reccurent message from Hollywood: Asians can't hold any leadership position. Always have to have a westerner as his/her boss to make decisions.
Wow, the progress... Oh and also, who better to write the movie, based of a japanese manga then a... white westerner called Christopher Yost?
Did we not learn from Mulan?
Again, Netflix showing their discrimination against asian men and ruining yet another cult creation coming from Asia, like Death Note, by putting their disgusting westerner's hands all over it.

Are there still negative Asian male portrayals on TV/movies like they used to?

Before the last 10 years, I feel like there was nothing going on for Asians besides the Harold and Kumar movies. Otherwise it was just Vince Masuda on Dexter playing the perverted Asian male comic role, Ken Jeong in the Hangover, Matthew Moy playing an embarrasing goofy guy on 2 Broke Girls, Rex Lee playing a feminine gay gay on Entourage, etc.
Now I can't think of any TV show or movie that has that weak nerdy Asian guy stereotype anymore. Now we have Ross Butler playing an Asian jock football player on 13 Reasons Why and Riverdale, Ki Hong Lee playing Kimmy's love interest in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Daniel Wu kicking ass in Into the Badlands, John Cho in Searching, Alex Landi playing a masculine gay guy in Grey's Anatomy with a submissive white boyfriend, Landi again in Insatiable where he plays a male stripper who is the main WF character's love interest, the entire shows Warrior and Wu Assasins, Henry Golding and all the roles he gets casted in, and of course Steven Yeun in The Walking Dead and a bunch of other movies he's gotten to star in.
I can't think of any major Asian male character who plays a stereotypical nerd in recent times, besides Jimmy O. Yang in Silicon Valley, but then that's a show about nerds. So is the stereotype finally dead in Hollywood?

Has the American Genre of "Bro" Comedy disappeared?

When I was about 13 Billy Madison came out. For the next 20 or so years there was always one or two Simpsons-type sarcastic, "bro-ey" movies in the theatres, usually starring one or more of the same cast of actors - early ones with SNL members who were of Adam Sandler's generation, but I'm more thinking of films like:
Talladega Nights, Zoolander, Hot Tub Time Machine, Neighbors, Anchorman, Superbad, Blades of Glory, 21/22 Jump Street, Harold and Kumar, Bridesmaids, Joe Dirt, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, I Love You Man, and others like that..
Yes, I am a white man. I know that we all benefit from having lots of funny movies from different perspectives like "Sorry to Bother You", "Jojo Rabbit", "Ladybird" and other movies that push the envelope, offer a different point of view, and are as interesting as they are funny.
But I also would like to still have the option of seeing some dumb movie with endless rewatch value that falls within the genre of those movies listed above too. The last time I saw a new movie that felt like this was C*ck Blockers.
Am I just not paying attention or do these kinds of movies - I guess they could most honestly be characterized as sarcastic, mostly white man, movies - just not getting made anymore? Is there really a feeling in hollywood that there's not market for this or are these movies still around and I'm just unaware of them?

Rant on chodes in positions of power

Open letter to an MP
No stain on Staines
A.J. Philip

Dear Shri Satya Pal Singh, MP,

Your parents had a purpose when they named you Satya (Truthful). They would have remembered Satyavan and his wife Savitri, who led such a truthful life that Yama, the God of death, was forced to allow the couple to live a full life.

I do not know how religious your parents were. They could possibly have been motivated by the national motto Satyameva Jayate (Truth shall triumph) when you were named Satya.

Did you remember your own name when you spoke in the Lok Sabha on the amendments to the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA) Bill?

I heard your speech and found that you had not a single new point to make except to repeat some provisions of the Bill and endorse them. You proved to be a pucca “yes-man” of the government. No, I do not blame you for that for you would, otherwise, find yourself in the BJP’s dungeon.

You came to the House with a prepared script to not only gain public attention but also get into the good books of the powers that be. From the comforts and security of Parliament, you defamed a person whose name should be written in golden letters in the annals of mankind.

Of course, you knew that Australian missionary Graham Stewart Staines and his teenaged sons Timothy Harold Staines and Philip Graham Staines who were burnt alive at Manoharpur in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on the night of January 22, 1999, would not file a defamation case against you.

You also knew that under the law of the land, an MP cannot be taken to task for his statements in Parliament. You are given the immunity from criminal action to help you serve the public cause, not to heap calumnies on a dead person.

Do you know what the then President of India, KR Narayanan, said about the killing of Graham Staines and his sons? He said, “it belonged to the world’s inventory of black deeds”. Twenty-one years after the macabre killing, you justified it on the ground that he deserved it as he was converting Hindus.

What’s worse, you “disclosed” that the police had found that the Australian missionary had raped 30 tribal women but a top Congress leader from Kerala had called the CBI Chief not to include it in the case file?

How will you, Mr Truth, feel if I write that someone had told me that you had raped 30 women, while you were the police commissioner of Mumbai? Of course, you will take me to court and the court will ask me who that person was who told me this. May I ask you the same question, which Congress leader pressurised the CBI?

You have totally forgotten that when the killings happened, the CBI functioned under Home Minister LK Advani. If Graham Staines was a serial rapist as you claim, was a single case registered against him anywhere in Odisha?

It is difficult for me to believe that you were once an IPS officer. If this is how your mind works, I know how the poor people, especially the minorities, would have suffered at your hands.

I am sure you would have heard the name of KS Dhillon, who served as DGP of Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, before becoming the Vice-Chancellor of Bhopal University, my alma mater.

Dhillon’s book “Defenders of the Establishment” (IIAS,1998) which is a history of the Indian Police from the Vedic times to the last decade of the 20th century is a classic work.

He begins the book with this sentence, “Unlike their counterparts in most Western democracies and Japan, police in the Indian subcontinent have never been held in high esteem by their compatriots”.

He elaborates, “Women would, in particular, avoid close proximity to a policeman for fear of compromising their reputation and personal safety. Most people believe that the police in the subcontinent routinely favour disreputable persons, political manipulators, influence peddlers, even confirmed criminals”.

When I heard your speech, I remembered these lines. I had two long meetings with Sardar Dhillon, whose daughter Preeti is a good friend. He divides the entire police fraternity into two, those who tweak the evidence to punish the guilty and those who tweak the evidence to punish the innocent.

Alas, you belong to an altogether different group, at once abominable — those who target the dead and make wild allegations against them to curry favour with the rulers. I wish you had done some home work before saying that Graham Staines raped 30 women.

If you have time, you can meet the Australian High Commissioner in India to find out how many Indians, mostly belonging to upper castes, seek visa to settle down in his country.

Australia, not the USA and Canada, is now the favourite destination of Indians who increasingly find that their “Mathrubhumi” is the best place to fly away from. Curiously, you went to Australia to add to your educational qualifications.

Unlike the comfort-seeking Indians who want to go to Australia, Graham Staines, born at Brisbane in Australia, chose one of the least developed areas of India to go to.

His contact with India began when he became a pen-friend of Santanu Satpathy. They shared a common birthday. It was on Satpathy’s invitation that Staines first visited Baripada in 1965. His encounter with the inmates of the Leprosy Home there had a profound influence on him. For once, he decided to devote the rest of his life to serving the poor there. Perhaps, you might think that he fell for the female leprosy patients!

Of course, he was merely following in the footsteps of fellow Australian, Ms Gilbert, who founded the Evangelical Missionary Society at Mayurbhanj way back in 1896. Odisha had at that time better rulers than you and your ilk, who equate missionary work with rape.

The Leprosy Home at Mayurbhanj would not have come up without the munificence of Maharaja Shriram Chandra Bhanja, who donated 4.6 acres of land for the project. The Home became a haven for the leprosy patients in the region.

The arrival of Graham Staines was a red-letter event for those who stayed at the Home. In your speech, you mentioned the DP Wadhwa Commission report. I have not only read the report but also critiqued it when it came out in 1999.

Do you know that each one of the “inmates” who deposed before the Wadhwa Commission praised the humanitarian work of Staines and detailed how he had transformed their humble lives?

Nothing surprising as millions of television viewers all over the world had seen them weeping copiously when they paid their last respects to Staines and his sons.

If you have the guts, I am ready to accompany you to Odisha. I do not have money at present for such a travel but I will borrow from my family and friends for the purpose. You are entitled to travel free of cost.

Let us, for a change, stay at the Leprosy Home for one or two days. We will eat the same food they eat. You can talk to the people there. I will be a silent listener. You can ask them any question. I will honestly report your findings. Are you ready?

Do you know that Staines was not alone in his work. He had in his wife Gladys Staines a loving companion and an able associate. Born in Sydney, Australia, she had made a visit to Baripada and had acquainted herself with Staines’ work before she decided to tie the knot with him 15 years before his killing.

What a cruel man you are to say that Staines was a rapist! Do you think Gladys Staines who lived in one of the most beautiful cities in the world would come all the way to Odisha to marry a “rapist” Will your daughter, if you have any, marry a serial rapist?

Their children, Esther, Timothy and Philip, were never a hindrance for their work. They never asked their parents why they had to put up with the discomfort of Odisha when they could have enjoyed all the comforts of modern life in Australia.

Such thoughts never crossed their mind as they had been brought up in an atmosphere of giving and loving. The equanimity with which Gladys and her daughter received the news of their beloved’s death said it all. Nobody in his senses could have felt hatred for these noble souls.

Yet, on that fateful night, Staines and his two sons, who were sleeping in their Station Wagon, as was their won’t, were surrounded by a murderous gang. They sprinkled kerosene on the vehicle and put it to the torch. The three were burnt alive.

Justice Wadhwa begins his report, “The barbarity of the crime shook the whole nation. Every Indian had to hang his head in shame”. In the introductory paragraph of his report, Justice Wadhwa quotes President Narayanan”.

“That someone who spent years caring for patients of leprosy, instead of being thanked and appreciated as a role model should be done to death in this manner is a monumental aberration from the traditions of tolerance and humanity for which India is known”.

Are you a human being to call such a noble soul “a serial rapist” without a shred of evidence?

I do not know how many times you mentioned the word “conversion” in your speech. Let me quote the Wadhwa Commission report: Keonjar district had a total population of 15.30 lakh. Out of them, 14.93 lakh were Hindus. Christians, mostly tribals, were 4,707.

According to the 1991 census, there were already 4,112 Christians in the district. Thus, there was an increase of only 595 in the Christian population. Could not 4,112 Christians have biologically produced 595 children over an eight-year period? I know all this is like reciting the Vedas into the ears of a “rogue buffalo” about to charge at you. I merely quoted a saying in Malayalam. I know that, unlike you, no buffalo will charge at a dead person.

By the way, I have a query. The person who organised the killing of Staines was one Dara Singh. His full name is Rabindra Kumar Pal. He is from Itawa in UP. He first came to Delhi looking for a job. Since he did not want to work hard, he went to Odisha and began, first, harassing Muslims and, then, Christians.

His name has a “Pal” in it. Your name also has a “Pal” in it. Are you and Dara Singh related to each other, by any chance? I may be wrong but in India, there are many people who will justify anything and everything that their relatives and friends do.

That is why I asked you this question.

Of course, you are the first to raise the rape charge against Staines. Two persons I know of have achieved good positions by accusing Staines of converting people. One became the Governor of Kerala. As Chief Justice of the apex court, he virtually justified the killing of Staines in a verdict he delivered.

When a hue and cry was raised, he made a correction in his judgement, little knowing that a judgement delivered is final till it is set aside by a larger Bench.

Another fellow who played a significant role in creating the atmosphere in which Staines and his children were burnt alive is today a honourable minister at the Centre.

The fervour with which you read out a text, even when the Speaker advised you to confine yourself to the FCRA Bill under discussion, suggests that you have cleared the rite of passage and has become eligible for a ministerial post. However, your speech has left me with the firm conviction that you are not worthy of being called Satya Pal.

For millions of people like me, you have, unfortunately, become a Jooth Pal!

Yours etc

Survivor Cook Islands & Asian Representation

All the prior Survivor seasons are available on Amazon Prime. This includes the season where the tribes are separated by racial/ethnic lines, Cook Islands. I found the season very interesting, and I think most people here would as well. I recommend you watch it on Amazon Prime if you want to look at Asian American representation back in 2006. At that time, probably the biggest major mainstream representations of Asian Americans on TV. This was also the year Harold & Kumar came out. Survivor was a big hit in the 2000s, so this was a big deal.
Some interesting points, but beware spoilers below. I'll try to keep it as vague as I can, but some of this info might actually motivate you to watch the show:
An Asian American ends up winning it
An Asian ends up making it, that legitimately cares about Asian American issues, stereotypes, and representation. This person not only cares about it, they openly talk about it from the first episode to the finale. On a major hit TV show, and at that time the #1 or close to top rated TV show. For those too young to remember, Survivor changed television in a major way when it first came out. It was so influential, Lost ended up being inspired by it.
An Asian man and Asian woman have the strongest bond on the island
2 cast members basically form a strong alliance. They're extremely loyal to each other. They both also connect on a cultural level, and a strong trust level.
How often did you see that on TV or film in the 2000s? How often do you even see that now?
The gay Asian was not stereotypical
They casted the gaysian as we've seen the cliche in Hollywood 100x over. Except this guy looked like he could dominate any physical challenge on the island. This guy cared about Asian American issues, stereotypes, and representation. He openly talks about this, and how he didn't want to fit stereotypes. In fact, he wasn't worried about fitting stereotypes at all, because he felt he was the opposite of those stereotypes.
There was an Asian that kept on making Asian jokes everyone hated
There was an older Asian who kept on making constant Asian jokes, and this would drive other people in the tribe crazy. By his own description, he is a "boater." He also says he does not fit in with other Asians, as he's not white collar, doesn't wear a suit, and doesn't look educated. He dislikes the idea of the Asian tribe because he openly admits he doesn't get along with other Asians.
He also creates a strategy in the game that is used for many years after. He also seems the most comfortable outdoors of all the Asians in the tribe, being the most efficient at starting fire, and being able to climb trees, and to gather food. Despite not fitting in he says he trusts his Asian tribe mates even though they do not like him. He also correctly predicts something that majorly changes the game that none of his other tribe mates - including the winner or other Asians are able to predict.
Interestingly, he points out the generational gap, and how he's a refugee and the other Asians are not. He says he's more hippie than typical Asian American. But he has a dragon tattoo and also has some old-world practices. The generational gap is stark and is on full blown display like we've never seen before, and I still don't think we've seen on more display in media than here.

Anyways, there's a pandemic, you need entertainment. Survivor is great, and there are many other interesting things that happen that I did not mention in order to avoid completely spoiling intrigue. Many of you will find this season extremely entertaining.

[Spoilers C2E99] TravelerCon Canon vs Speculation

Hi all,
I finally caught up with the cast of Critical Role/Mighty Nein last month and in our current Sunday campaign, I’m playing a Firbolg Life Cleric inspired by Mercer’s portrayal of Pumat Sol. You may recognize the accent as the cow from Zootopia — Tommy Chong’s 8 Int/18 Wis Naturalist club! I certainly did. The memes about Firbolg as cows and the opportunity to play a stoner Firbolg caster was irresistible to me.
...
Golly Jean the Giant is a failed adventurer, half-baked and fully loaded straight from classic stoner buddy comedies like Cheech and Chong, Harold and Kumar, Jay and Silent Bob, Bill and Ted, etc... He (along with Dr. Moo, a time-traveling Firbolg with a green screwdriver that do do anything) get into all sorts of zany antics while the rest of the party grits their teeth and drags us along because we are the spellcasters. He wears a bunch of poorly fitting, mismatched old adventure gear like a ratty wizards cap, fighters pauldrons, and rogue bracers. All of the Firbolg/class powers are reflavored as Hymn of the Adventurer abilities — Trickster for Disguise Self, Magus for Detect Magic, Rogue for Hidden Step, Healer for Channel Divinity.
...
Golly follows the tenets of the Traveler after finding a pamphlet with a dick drawing inside a prayer book at a temple of Avandra and thinks he’s “the coolest.” Also someone named Jester sent him a mysterious message telling him “to bring a green cloak and go to a volcano, in two weeks, because it will be like, super cool and stuff, and it’s totally NOT A CULT. DOOdooDOOdoodooDooDdoo”
I found this link last week when we were taking a boat out to Palma Flora in order to ask about... Rumblecusp. https://criticalrole.fandom.com/wiki/TravelerCon BUT it is missing a lot of info.
My understanding is that Artagan hasn’t planned out anything and it is basically going to be like the Fyre Festival where everyone shows up expecting a big show and it’s a huge Con instead. From TravelerCon(vention) to Traveler’s Con(fidence scheme) as I believe it was phrased in a Talks Machina afterward.
So, here are my curious questions for you all:
I’m a bit worried about the future for Golly Jean Giant at TravelerCon, but my wife will be having a baby in two months so I told the group that my hiatus will be because I’m attending this FyreFest. Which always seems to be two weeks away, even in our game.
If there’s anyone who can make it out of the end of a bizarre failure of a FyreFest/LiteralBurningMan/Whatever Crazy New Magic Cupcake Stunts Laura Bailey Cooks Up With MAGIC... it’s a stoner at the end of a stoner movie. So we’ll see how it plays out in our game :)

ISO other films in two very narrow styles - After Hours is exemplar of style 1 and Closetland is exemplar of style 2

I am looking for more films to "collect" in a couple massively specific sub-genres. I find myself drawn to these little projects and I just love to find things that match them. I am going to start with an exemplary film for each and offer a supplemental film as well. I will also list additional "rules" for the genre. These are incredibly specific, in their way, and I would still love recommendations that break a rule here and there. This is supposed to be fun and difficult, but not impossible to identify other movies.
Finally, I would also love ideas on other mini-genres that you enjoy!
GENRE 1 - The Overnight Urban Misadventure
After Hours, by Martin Scorsese is my inspiration for this genre. I remember finding it one evening (baked out of my mind) as a college student and it hooked me from the first second and it never let go. I simply enjoy everything about this movie.
Rules
Another good example is Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle (but not the sequels). A third example that dawned on me is Adventures in Babysitting.
GENRE 2 - The Micro Cast Thriller
My mom rented the movie Closetland one night when I was a child. I remember watching it hidden in the couch cushions because I couldn't handle the tension and awkward maneuvering between the two actors. It was all so strange and beautiful. Alan Rickman is Snape to so many people, and Gruber to many others. He will always be the officer in this movie to me.
Rules
Another good example of this is Bug by William Friedkin, which admittedly has a larger cast than two people, but I would still call it "micro". Other very close examples may be the Human Centipede and Cube, but those lean a little away from the psychological aspects.
I am really excited to see what suggestions people have - and what other mini-genres you like!

22 Broadway shows? A discussion of Broadway crossover stars who could be in contention...

So I don't know a lot about most celebrities, but I know a lot about Broadway and its people! This is meant to be a fun, speculative post, so feel free to add your own in the comments, or tell me why my assessments are bad. I don't care either way.
Just based on the amount of shows (22!), I imagine there are at least 2 people with ties to Broadway. Let's look at some possibilities who meet the following criteria:
Chita Rivera
See her singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/2VSAtVzGvxo
Height: 5’3”
Age: 86
*Why Chita?*
This literal queen has been in 18 official Broadway shows since 1950. She is a household name that anyone could recognize, She hasn’t been doing much since The Visit closed on Broadway in 2015, so I don’t know of any major public obligations she would have that would prevent her from being part of The Masked Singer. She has also been the recipient of THREE (!) Lifetime Achievement Awards: Kennedy Center Honors (2002), John Willis Award (Theater World, 2015), and a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre (2018). She also won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award in 1986 and 1993, respectively, for her star turn in Kiss of the Spider Woman (Black Widow, anyone?). She’s been married and divorced. She hits so many of the contestant “stats” released by Fox that I want this to be real.
*Why not Chita?*
Like I said before, she hasn’t done much in the last 4 years since The Visit. She’s also 86. I know Gladys Knight was on last season, so maybe her age doesn’t mean a thing. Chita’s voice is also iconic and would probably give her away fairly quickly (if Fox cares about that kind of thing this season). I also have no idea if she’s really left the realm of musical theater for singing and would be able to do the pop covers we hear on The Masked Singer. Probably, but I haven’t heard it.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Chita on The Masked Singer Season 2: 8/10

Sutton Foster
See her singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/0wwzXdwM1C0
Height: 5’9”
Age: 44
*Why Sutton?*
Sutton has 11 Broadway credits to her name. If you see one of these contestants tearing up some tap dancing, I would put money on Sutton; you can see her fancy footwork in Thoroughly Modern Millie (above), The Drowsy Chaperone, and Anything Goes. Sutton has also crossed-over into television and has been on Younger the past few years, and starred in Bunheads before that. She is returning to Broadway next fall (2020) to star in the revival of The Music Man, opposite Hugh Jackman. Maybe she’s looking to get back into her singing chops before returning to the stage in a hyped up revival?
*Why not Sutton?*
I love the lady, but despite having been on television the last few years, I’m not sure she’s a “household name” that could be a plausible addition to The Masked Singer.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Sutton on The Masked Singer Season 2: 4/10

David Alan Grier
See him singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/YPSIGirJi3o
Height: 6’2”
Age: 63
*Why David?*
Oh David, what can’t this man do? He’s been around 5ever and he’s massively talented (BOY CAN SING!). His career has spanned comedy, stage, radio, television, and film. He graduated from the Yale School of Drama and was a contestant on Dancing With the Stars (for those who noticed the Masked SingeDWTS connection for Season 1 and think it could play into casting for Season 2). He has been on Broadway 5 times and will be starring in a 6th this coming January.
*Why not David?*
He’s 6’2” and probably too tall for most of the costumes, except for Thingamajig. Not a good reason, but whatever.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of David on The Masked Singer Season 2: 7/10

Neil Patrick Harris
See him singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/3BHyfYiBt5o
Height: 6’0”
Age: 46
*Why NPH?*
Aside from Hugh Jackman, NPH is literally the Greatest Showman. Starting as a child actor, Neil has been a household name fairly consistently from Doogie Howser, the Harold and Kumar movies, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, How I Met Your Mother, and his appearances on Broadway. To date, he’s been in/voiced for 27 films, starred in 4 Broadway shows, has won 5 Emmys, and has hosted the Tony Awards several times, proving he loves loves LOVES to perform and is game for anything. He was constantly guessed as the Peacock during Season 1 and, to me, it feels like NPH being on The Masked Singer is inevitable. His twin children are now old enough where he wouldn’t need to be close to home constantly to care for them.
*Why not NPH?*
Looking at his Instagram, it appears that Neil spent most of his summer in Israel, NYC, or London. I haven’t found confirmed dates for when The Masked Singer filmed, but I imagine it was somewhere in May/June/July 2019.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of NPH on The Masked Singer Season 2: 2/10

Laura Benanti
See her singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/v8b8Pic9AaI
Height: 5’8”
Age: 40
*Why Laura?*
Twelve Broadway credits, 3 marriages, 2 divorces, and starred in television shows such as The Playboy Club, Law & Order: SVU, Nashville, Supergirl, and Younger. She’s been on late night shows (Melania Trump impression) and starred in The Sound of Music Live in 2013. Though musical theatre is her first love, she’s also skilled at singing in other accents and genres. Her impression of Melania Trump could be the source of the Leopard’s cheeky clue about being “spotted with the President”. Laura has killer vocals and may be mainstream enough to be cast on The Masked Singer.
*Why not Laura?*
She was starring in My Fair Lady on Broadway until July of this year. Assuming filming for Season 2 was somewhere in May/June/July, Laura wouldn’t have been able to make it between NYC and LA for filming while playing 8 shows a week. Sad.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Laura on The Masked Singer Season 2: 0/10

Uzo Aduba
See her singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/4WKLe1uZ5cc
Height: 5’7”
Age: 38
*Why Uzo?*
Because she’s the bomb? Before she starred as Crazy Eyes on Orange is the New Black, Uzo was a musical theater darling in NYC, and starred in the most recent Broadway revival of Godspell. She was also recently in The Wiz Live as Glinda, showcasing her powerhouse vocals. Uzo has won 2 Emmy awards for her role on Orange is the New Black, which just aired its final season, so it looks like Uzo had some free time on her hands before joining the main cast for Season 4 of Fargo (airing 2020).
*Why not Uzo?*
She’s also starring in an FX miniseries called Mrs. America that airs in 2020, and principal filming for that is taking place between June 19, 2019 to November 1, 2019 in Toronto. Uzo may not have been in LA for The Masked Singer filming, assuming it took place during May/June/July 2019.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Uzo on The Masked Singer Season 2: 5/10

Ana Gasteyer
See her singing here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/elU3SJCh95g
Height: 5’7”
Age: 52
*Why Ana?*
21 film credits, 4 Broadway shows, and iconic SNL roles. This lady does it all. Listen to the song in the above video - she makes some very difficult technical vocals sound easy to pull off. She was also Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway!
*Why not Ana?*
I’m not actually sure The Masked Singer producers would have thought of her for a singing competition? I honestly didn’t know she sang until I was watching Reefer Madness and I was like whaaaaat. But I hope I’m wrong because I love her and her voice, and I think she would surprise a lot of people.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Ana on The Masked Singer Season 2: 5/10

Todrick Hall
See him singing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6WJNyr_g44
Height: 5’8”
Age: 34
*Why Todrick?*
I've seen his name thrown around online, but I'm not terribly convinced. He has 5 Broadway credits to his name. He's well known in the American Idol fandom, the Broadway world, YouTube fandom, and the gay community. He's fun and sassy. He has a tour coming up and just finished up a 4 week stint in Waitress on Broadway. What else were you up to this summer, Todrick?
*Why not Todrick?*
He was likely prepping for his stint in Waitress (AUG 19, 2019 - SEP 15, 2019) while Season 2 was filming, but who knows? I don't.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Todrick on The Masked Singer Season 2: 6/10

Sarah Jessica Parker
See her singing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOBYT5abl9M
Height: 5'3"
Age: 54
*Why Sarah?*
Bet you didn't know she was on Broadway! She's been on Broadway 4 times, including her star turn in Once Upon a Mattress (1997). She's also got 2 Emmy wins for Sex and the City. Did I mention that she's also married to fellow actosinger Matthew Broderick? In fact, they will be starring in a Broadway play together, Plaza Suite, in 2020. She's recently been starring in HBO's Divorce. Maybe she wants to get back to her singing roots? I actually quite like her singing voice and it doesn't sounds like something I would expect from her speaking voice, possibly being able to fool the judges.
*Why not Sarah?*
I honestly can't see her caring to do a show like this? Like she's too famous for this? She seems to be pretty selective about her acting projects these days and has also done some producing. She also hasn't done a musical since Once Upon a Mattress, and that was during the Clinton Administration.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Sarah on The Masked Singer Season 2: 2/10

Zachary Levi
See him singing here: https://youtu.be/1o8Bxa93W0U?t=152
Height: 6'4"
Age: 38
*Why Zachary?*
He's hot, he's talented, and he's a superhero (Shazam!) - looking at you potential Fox contestant! He's been on Broadway twice, in film (Flynn Rider in Tangled, Fandral in the Thor films, and the titular Shazam), and television (Chuck in Chuck). I also shamelessly stan Zachary Levi. I could also see him being all about doing The Masked Singer... if he has time.
*Why not Zachary?*
He seems like a busy dude these days. Also, he's pretty tall, which limits him to Thingamajig, which I don't think is him.
Completely arbitrary likelihood of Zachary on The Masked Singer Season 2: 4/10
