Galactic Economics 2: Trustworthy

Jen and Sarah spent the next week doing research. The Internet was filled with contradictory information about monetary theory and economics, and neither of them really had the background to evaluate the arguments that everyone was having.
However, Sarah reminded them both, they didn't need to look at a perfect system, just one that worked. So, they started digging through Wikipedia articles and online textbooks on the history of money and how they came to be.
"Hey, did you know they used to use salt as currency?" Sarah asked as she skimmed through a particularly fascinating documentary about Middle Age East African economies.
"Is this some kind of joke about mining salt?"
"No, it's real, look. And apparently the word salary is from the Latin word salarium for money used to buy salt," Sarah continued fascinated.
Of course, they couldn't use something as simple as salt to represent money. In fact, they couldn't use any commodity either.
Over the last week, one of the alien traders caught wind that gold was extremely valuable on Earth, so they'd brought them in by the ton load. Gold was still useful for electronics and some dentistry, but the price of gold, mostly propped up by its value in rarity, crashed hard.
The problem with currency in galactic trading, as Sarah discovered, was that there wasn't a single commodity that was equally rare in every system.
No, whatever alternative they come up to the laughably outdated barter system had to be built on something far more rare and valuable than gold.
Something that even the most powerful human empires in history have struggled to collect.
It had to be built on trust.
"That's the system most modern currencies are based on," Sarah claimed, "you only accept dollars for work because you trust that you're going to be able to wake up tomorrow and spend it on… everything you need."
"Hmm well, we can't just ask them to take US dollars," Jen giggled. This would be so much easier if that weren't true.
"Why not?" Sarah asked, playing the devil's advocate.
"Well… well, like you said, they won't trust it! I certainly wouldn't if I were a trader! Furthermore, who knows? Maybe they have a printer in their ship that can duplicate money! Maybe we should ask them for that next time we bring Zarko some pears," Jen said, thinking out loud.
"I doubt it. The government keeps a lot of secrets about how they make Dollars , and I don't want the Secret Service knocking on my door," Sarah said. Until this week, she hadn't known that this was one of the lesser known duties of the USSS. Now that she knew it, it made the thought of attracting their attention even less palatable, "you're right. What about digital casino tokens? We can produce something that translates to Dollars and have our own system that tracks it all."
"Sure, that's not too hard to make. We would have a centralized money supply, where we don't trust each end point…" Jen continued on the brainstorm, thinking in terms of the technical system, "ok, so say we make SarahBucks, and peg its value to the US Dollar. One pound of pears would be worth 1.5 SarahBucks, one pound of sirloin steak is 6.99 SarahBucks at Safeway. That still doesn't explain how we'll get people to use it."
"I'm not sure. I need to think about this more," Sarah yawned, tired. "And I hate that name."
They agreed that they were stuck, and that SarahBucks was absolutely a terrible name.
Livermore Spaceport, Earth
A month after the spaceport opening, Sarah noticed that it had become less of a tourist attraction. There were far fewer people standing around gawking at the aliens, and a lot more companies trucking their best-selling products into the spaceport for trade.
After their abuse of Jen's cousin's employee pass got discovered by the spaceport authorities, Sarah and Jen had started placing their own bids on getting into the spaceport through the official channels. Thanks to their existing connections with the managers at the spaceport and a growing bank account of value, they could still get in to continue their lucrative trade for magical alien goods.
A bit of a rich-get-richer type of situation.
The flavor of the month were these Bohor magical air filter machines that aggressively scrubbed the air of… anything you want them to.
The Bohor planet is basically the planetary equivalent of a toxic dump.
Sure, it had biomes; it wasn't a Star Wars sci-fi planet where the entire planet is either a desert or an ice-cold tundra or a forest. But the entire planet had been polluted so heavily by its occupants that it lowered the life expectancy by half before the Bohors found a solution:
They simply filtered their entire atmosphere through air filter machines and then buried the toxins and garbage they got out of it in a very deep landfill, somewhere where very few people lived. Pretty much the kind of solution you'd expect out of a species that created the original problem in the first place.
Zikzik, the alien that was the same species as Zarko, overheard a human asking about their rocket fuel and climate change, and brought in a cargo hold of them.
It was a massive hit.
Earth's climate change problem wasn't nearly as bad as Bohor, but it was relatively simple to program these machines to suck carbon out of its atmosphere and… bury them in a landfill.
At first, few of the human traders bought them, thinking that it was going to be at least a while before the problem became big enough that big governments were going to come to them to try to address the issue, but they had it all wrong.
Soon as word got out this was an option, big companies and philanthropists started lining up at their doors. As it turned out, literally sucking the carbon dioxide out of the air was easier and cheaper than modifying many of their industrial practices to actually be environmentally green. They didn't need to run more efficient factories to claim to be carbon-neutral; just pump as much carbon into the air in exchange for undoing that by sucking it out of the atmosphere after!
Some bean counters at a think tank in DC predicted that a few more shipments of these air filters will fix Earth's climate problems by themselves in about a decade, so every trader had a waiting list of corporations with PR problems willing to buy them.
Sarah and Jen had a couple vehicle manufacturing companies on their list who were trying to get Bohor air filters to use in lobbying for looser emission standards for their dirty gasoline cars.
Today, there were traders on all the landing pads, and they were all carrying air filters. Zarko's ship was there, and he was loading fruits into his spaceship with an alien looking forklift. Sarah and Jen approached his ship and noticed the truck driver standing there.
"Hey Benny, tempting the poor aliens with cherries this time?" Sarah waved good, grinning and looking at his cargo.
Technically, Benny is a competitor, or at least he drives for a competitor. The massive fruit conglomeration he worked for, Chuckita, had not neglected to notice the massive business opportunity sitting right here as many others have, and are now delivering straight to the aliens in exchange for massive profit margins.
But Benny was a good guy. One time Jen and Sarah were having some trouble finding a buyer for a bunch of legally dubious alien psychedelics. Benny was in his late 50s, not that great with the Internet either, so he'd introduced them to whom he referred to as "my money launderer". Aka, his 22-year-old son, Benny Jr, who had a habit of buying weed and other less than legal items off the deep web. Benny Jr had found a buyer for them within minutes and even generously offered to handle the deal for them to spare them the risk of meeting some psycho hopped up on an alien high in a dark alley somewhere.
"Heh! One of the bat aliens loves sweets but has a low tolerance for sour, so they treat cherries as some kind of an odd challenge fad. They eat a random cherry, and it's either so incredibly sweet they start drooling out of the mouths, or it's a sour one, and they freak out," Benny replied, in a low voice as if he were trying to keep it a big secret. "Zarko showed me a video, and it's the most hilarious thing I've ever seen".
"I think I've seen that one, have you seen the one where they drink wine?" Sarah chuckled at the memory. Alien videos have been a big hit on YouTube. Some human merchants were trading fruit for aliens to take videos of the galaxy. Which they monetized, of course.
"No," Benny's ears perked up. Chuckita doesn't make wine, but if selling wine to aliens was going to be a thing, they were a big supplier of grapes… "Is it gonna be a thing?"
"Well guess what we brought today?" Jen also grinning from ear to ear, and holding up a big carton of low-quality box wine.
"Awww seems like I'm always one step behind you guys," Benny moaned in exaggeration, "I tried to get my money launderer to tell me what aliens would want but all he does is play video games on the Internet, kids these days."
Luckily, Zarko chose this moment to step out to spare them from more good-humored ribbing from the boomer. "Ah Sarah and Jen, you brought the grape wine this time!"
"Yup," Sarah beamed, "and I see you've run out of air filters to trade again!"
"Sadly yes," Zarko tilted his head in shame, "my ship is overdue for a cargo space upgrade, but I haven't found a port that would do it for fruit yet. Next time?"
"Alright! Alright! We'll leave our special wine with you, but you better get us some extra good filters next time!" Jen scolded mockingly. Zarko has gotten a lot more comfortable doling out IOUs since the first time.
"Of course. Only the best for you two," Zarko said with a greasy human smile imitation that almost made Sarah laugh out loud. It reminded her of a ridiculous cartoon sloth.
"By the way," Sarah asked casually, "how much is a spaceship worth on your planet?"
Zarko sobered up his expression and looked at her curiously. It was a question that other humans had asked before. To him, it was a good sign. This meant that they all dreamt of the stars. But he didn't expect such a question from someone as seemingly practical as Sarah. She had a lot of fruit, sure, but fruit doesn't build spaceships.
After thinking for a while, he replied honestly, "ships aren't traded for one single item. My family traded for the parts to build mine for generations."
He pointed at his spaceship.
Zarko proudly explained, "this is the work of eighteen generations of trading. My family was one of the richest on Zeep-zep. For thirteen generations, they traded for each of the parts on this beauty. Then, for the last five, my ancestors traded excess food from the tenant farmers on their land to expert craftsbeings that could put it together."
"Wait, eighteen generations?" Jen gasped. Eighteen generations ago, her family were probably peasants on a farm in Korea or something…
"Yes," Zarko said, looking at them with a little of pity. "After getting the spaceship, my family has traded in it for twelve generations, through civil wars and disasters."
He did some math on his hands, and said, "that's about four hundred of your years. That's why it's very unlikely that you will never go to space."
Looking at the stunned expression on their faces, he tried to lighten the mood. Zarko said mischievously, "unless you're willing to part with some more of your fruit, in which case I'll let you sit in the back seat for a whole route!"
"Hold on, back up, I'm still stuck on the multiple generations part," Sarah said seriously. "You're saying you're flying on a spaceship that started to be built thirty generations ago? That's… about a millennia for us."
"Yes," Zarko answered, "and that's why only thirteen families on my planet have had the privilege of owning one in our long history. No offense, but that's why I think no human will ever own their own spacecraft for at least fifteen more generations."
Something is wrong here, Sarah thought. The budget for NASA's FTL spacecraft was in the hundreds of millions. Yes, for a fruit farmer, that would be many generations of work if all their descendants worked in the same industry. But there were over three thousand billionaires on Earth, not including the tens of thousands of corporations that had assets or market value over a billion. And the prices for the spacecraft would surely go down as time went on…
For a planet like Zarko's to only have thirteen spaceships over generations of their development…
As they were walking away, Benny asked, "have you guys noticed something weird about the way these aliens do business?"
"Yes." "God yes." They said in unison.
"We've been thinking about it for a while, but these guys not having money is a major problemo," Sarah said, looking around surreptitiously, "Zarko and Zikzik keep talking about not being able to find someone who can upgrade their hulls for fruit. And sometimes they come with nothing good, and we're supposed to just drive our fruits all the way back!"
"And if you think about it, if they were human ships, think about truckers who don't own their trucks. We'd have loans or something to deal with the cargo space problems, and they'd be paid for by profits in a few trips," Jen added.
"The numbers he gave us for spacecraft ownership seem insane," Sarah agreed. "Your company could probably afford to order one right now, not to mention hundreds of others. They must all be dirt poor!"
Benny seemed relieved that he wasn't the only one who was thinking this, "exactly! I'm thinking we just introduce them to the concept of Benjamins and solve all their problems and ours. Would certainly make the return trip a lot easier for me if I didn't have to drive all the way to Berkeley for junior to launder all this crap!"
"We thought of that too," Sarah said as Benny pretended to groan again, "but we couldn't figure out how to get them to take money with no intrinsic value."
"Oh that shouldn't be too hard," Benny said, who's clearly already thought through this problem in his head, "we play a little game called good cop, bad cop."
"Good cop bad cop?"
"Sure, it's a mind game the cops play, where they put you in a room-"
"Yeah we know what it is, but how does that help us?" Sarah said impatiently, an idea tugging on her subconscious.
"Well you see," Benny clearly smugly enjoying this moment where he's thought of something that the duo did not, "you two come with an empty truck next time, and you tell Zarko that you'll give him a wad of clean crisp cash, fresh from the bank, for some of his air filters. And when he asks you why he'd take the cash, you just tell him that he can give it to me in exchange for some of my fruits."
"What does that have anything to do with good cop bad cop?!" Jen asked.
"That has nothing to do with good cop bad cop," Sarah chimed in, but the idea was beginning to form in her head, "but it's a good start. We don't want to deal in cash. It's too risky. It could get the feds onto us and there's a bunch of laws around it that I'm not sure about."
"But what we can do is have an internal money system for traders pegged to the US Dollar!" Jen completed.
"Yup, so when Zarko comes back next time, we tell him he has an account with the Bank of Benny, we give him a fancy looking card that has his bank account number and give him a pin code, and we deposit a certain amount of BennyBucks into his account for giving us air filters. Then when you come around, Zarko gives you his card and pin, and gives you BennyBucks for your fruit," Sarah finished.
"Aha. And then I come to you two, say, I would like to convert BennyBucks in my Bank of Benny account to good old American dollars," Benny extrapolated, completing that final step.
"Yeah! We'll just wire you the money and everyone gets theirs," Sarah exclaimed, happy they've finally thought through the loop and gotten someone on board.
"BennyBucks is a terrible name though," Jen said, calming everyone down a little, "and why are we getting so excited over the basic concept of currency? And why haven't aliens figured this out? Maybe it's against some kind of space trading code."
"Who knows? Maybe we just try it on Zarko and see if it works out," Benny said, a glint in his eyes, "and then we expand, galaxy-tically."
"Galactic credits!" Sarah exclaimed, "that's what we'll call it."
They agreed that it was the least worst name that they'd come up with so far. It was boring, but when it came to finances, maybe boring and cliché was a good choice after all.
"Explain again. I am trying to understand," Zarko said two days later as he offloads the air filters he'd promised.
"C'mon dude, for the fifth time," Sarah exasperated, "it's not that hard. We give you a bank account card and have you set up a secret number…"
Jen had spent the last two days coding up a storm. Technically, a simple debit system wasn't that hard, but she had to make a website interface that Benny could go up to and enter his account, Zarko's card information and amount, then let Zarko type in his code…etc. She'd mused that it would have been easier to just do this all in a cloud-based spreadsheet, but that wouldn't scale up if they had more customers.
Sarah had the account cards laminated and designed a logo: the letters GC, for Galactic Credit, and a stylized version of a Milky Way in the background. Part of the value in a trustworthy system is to look official, and you can't get much more official than laminated cards.
"Yes, I understand that part," Zarko said, clearly displaying his frustration on his facial expression as well, "but I don't understand why Benny would give me his fruit for just entering a number."
"Because we have an agreement with him that he'll take it in exchange for fruit!" Sarah was sure this was the umpteenth time she had to explain this, but clearly Zarko was not getting it.
"Is it similar to a debt?" Zarko said suspiciously, as if debt was this dark magic that the humans were performing on him, "I have never heard of this kind of debt before."
"Yes, it's a debt, of sorts," Jen cut in. The last time he had asked this exact question, they'd said no, and that led to fifty other questions and explanations that went nowhere, so nothing could go worse if they said yes-
"Ok. I don't understand," Zarko did his sloth version of a sigh, it was cute, but at the same time frustrating for Sarah and Jen, "But I can try it. I know you two are not trying to trick me. Do I get my fruits before I take off?"
"Yes! You go to Benny-" Sarah started.
"Yes! And that's it. Benny gives you his fruit," Jen cut her off, knowing that this was about to launch into yet another long, long line of questions they just can't deal with right now.
Sarah set up a new account for Zarko, asked him for a 6 digit base ten pin code (thank god Zarko was a ten digit species) which he promptly memorized, and hoping that Jen's prototype website wouldn't fail, showed him how they were "giving" Zarko 40,000 Galactic Credits for 8 Bohor air filter machines into his account ("No, you can't have my iPad. It's on your account card now. Show this to Benny later.")
"Well that worked out great," Benny said as he watched them wire him the $25,000 for his truck shipment of fruit. Though his costs were in the low thousands, he could have easily fleeced Zarko for his full 40k. But they all agreed that wasn't the point, which was to get Zarko to see the benefits of using a currency system abstracted from goods and services.
"Dude, you weren't there," Sarah complained, "I don't understand why he had such a hard time understanding money. Money equals goods. Bing bang boom. It's like these guys don't have the capability for abstract thinking."
"No they definitely do. You can't build spaceships without abstract math and science," Jen said, "but he clearly had a deathly aversion to using money. I think it's tied to some taboo to debt somehow. All the other species must have it because none of the aliens we've met have even mentioned anything close to a real economy."
"Whatever it is," Benny sighed happily, "I'm just happy I didn't have to go home with my truck full of weird alien toys."
"Yup. The next step is to get all the human traders to take credits. At least they'll have no problems understanding the benefits."
Sarah made some calls to the trader licensing office at the spaceport. There she found a manager willing to part with phone numbers and contact information for the other human traders, for an "information fee" of course, and started making calls to the other human traders.
It wasn't easy. Some traders were representatives of bigger food companies, and didn't have all the flexibility to make these kinds of decisions. And others no doubt were thinking of copying their system for their own profit. But they all saw the benefits of a unified network of currency debiting because they've been suffering the same problems that Sarah, Jen, and Benny had been.
Over the next few days, all the human traders agreed to take galactic credit from the aliens, which they knew they could exchange for cash with Sarah and Jen.
"We are officially in business."
In economics, there's a distinction made between different kinds of money. There's commodity money, usually gold or silver. There's representative money, which is currency backed by commodities like gold or silver. And then there's fiat money, which is not backed by any intrinsic value, but rather by government decree, hence fiat.
Galactic Credits fall into some kind of weird hybrid category between representative and fiat money. They're backed by the Dollar, which is fiat money, but also which makes them representative money. This means that the people issuing them, in this case Jen and Sarah, are not supposed to create them without also having a corresponding US Dollar in their bank account.
Of course, Sarah and Jen hadn't signed an ironclad contract with the other human traders that they're always guaranteed to take their galactic credits and exchange for money, so technically that meant that one day Sarah could simply "deposit" a large number of credits in her account and buy all the goods she wanted from Zarko, or potentially the other traders.
That would, however, be slaughtering the golden goose for the meat.
After all, they didn't want to sell fruit or Bohor air filters.
They wanted to sell the concept of money.
"Why would I take this over fruit?" Zikzik sniffed. He was known as a sharp one by all the human traders. If there's any new alien fad coming down the pipeline, chances are Zikzik is the first one to touchdown with a cargo hold full of it.
Unlike many of the other traders, he was fairly consistent in his dealings. This much fruit is for this much air filters. He knows his price, and he lets you know it too. Everyone suspected he kept careful records of all his selling and buying somewhere in his ship, but he's never brought them out. Maybe he just had a sharp memory.
"It's very consistent," Sarah insisted, trying to appeal to his affinity for a stable and predictable exchange, "one pound of fruit today is the same as one pound of fruit tomorrow, and you can deal in fractions."
Completely ignoring that most fruits are seasonal, and price changes, and inflation, she thought, let's start here.
"Fractions, you say?" Zikzik seemed thoughtful, or maybe he's just scratching an itch on his snout, Sarah could never tell with these aliens.
"Yes, fractions," said Jen detecting the slightest bit of opening, "you can trade your air filters for credit. Then you can trade maybe three quarters of your credits to fill your cargo with fruit. The next time you come down here to Earth, you would only need to bring half the amount of air filters as the first trip, combined with the credits you have left, you can leave with a full cargo load anyway!"
Is that how that math goes, Sarah thought, but didn't cut in, as Zikzik seems to be nodding, an oddly universal gesture for affirmation.
"Five eighths of the credits," Zikzik argued, "The air filters are harder to get now because the Bohor are running low, and they need time to make more."
Bargaining! There we go! That's what we're talking about! Sarah almost pumped her fists in the air and gave him a high five, not a great idea given how sharp his claws are as she found out when trying to shake his hands a couple of weeks ago.
"Ok, you would still have to negotiate that amount with each human trader," Sarah replied adding, "but they all deal in Galactic Credits."
They signed him up for an account, gave him a card, and set up his pin code. It had only taken half an hour to get Zikzik on board, which was significantly faster than the hours they'd taken to explain this to Zarko, despite them being the same species. Was it xenocist that she'd assume it was going to take just as long, Sarah wondered.
Looking at the line of traders, she sighed. This was going to be a long day.
Luckily, Zikzik accepting the credits made for great advertising. He was known for being a sharp trader, so if he doesn't think it's a scam, it must not be, right?
Sarah and Jen managed to get two other traders that day onto credits, and one more who was dipping his proverbial toes into the water.
It was a good day.
Jen had been working hard. The Galactic Credits website was now on its 16th major iteration. She'd beefed up the security on it, to make sure none of the other human traders got any funny ideas. Backups became more automatic and frequent, and there was now a rollback and dispute mechanism, not that it was being used yet.
Sarah had also been working hard. She'd been sitting in meetings all day with legal, finances, and now they had a small army of people who were ready to help out if they got into trouble there. Galactic Credits is now officially a tax paying LLC incorporated in the great state of Delaware.
Benny Jr, who had just finished college, had come in as well. He was no good at talking to clients, but he's what the duo would refer to as "street smart". Occasionally, the alien traders would bring in some exotic or ahem, dubiously sourced items, and he would know exactly where to convert that into cold hard cash. On the spreadsheets, his dealings were adding up to a nice fat padding on the margins for Galactic Credits, which to this point, hasn't been making any money other than in the fruit and air filters exchange business.
They were now working out of a rented office in downtown Livermore, with a very nice view of a brick-lined pub that offers numerous craft beers and the old railroad that runs through the heart of town.
Ironically, there's a Bank of America branch across the street, not far from the office itself, the company that had invented the BankAmericard and started the credit card revolution, seemingly oblivious to this new competitor moving into town, literally and figuratively.
They had many brilliant finance experts who were working on something, surely, but established financial institutions are not always great at moving fast and adapting to changing technology. There were many regulations to worry about, and the stakes were a lot higher.
There's something very quaint about the town itself. Some people didn't consider it part of the Bay Area metro area itself, but with the latest BART expansion station they recently built, that's been less and less true.
Now, it was literally the town where the train tracks ended. And where the final frontier began.
For the people in the office, it's also where they dreamt about a new financial revolution in the galaxy.
Some people have critiqued this chapter on the grounds that established financial institutions would have thought of this idea on day one. I appreciate the feedback, but that is a rosy view of the velocity at corporations in my opinion. I've personally worked in some of these companies, and if someone brought up this idea, it would probably have taken at least a month to get the idea through various risk audits and legal reviews.
In terms of technology, much of banking still operates on software that predates the modern Internet. This is one of the reasons why fin-tech startups have been able to beat them on time-to-market, despite massive institutional or financial disadvantages. It's why companies like PayPal, Square, Stripe, Venmo… etc could compete with the incumbents with the development of the Internet.
Sure, an intern in engineering or tools would have a semi-working prototype by week three, but the first line of code would be pushed to production by… month three. A much more likely scenario: some startup beats them to the punch, exactly as it happens here, and the large company offers their founders or investors an obscene amount of money to buy them out.

Why The Emoji Movie is a better representation of Star Wars than the Disney Trilogy

Why The Emoji Movie is a better representation of Star Wars than the Disney Trilogy
So I recently watched The Emoji Movie, a movie that Disney shills seem to hate for whatever reason, just to see what all the fuss was about. After 79 minutes, my mind was blown at how great it was! I haven't experienced this much joy in a movie since I first saw Star Wars!
Then I realize that people have called this the worst animated film of all-time, while simultaneously giving praise to Disney's Star Wars trilogy, even though those movies did everything this movie is accused of, but far worse. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I realize that this movie is a better version of Star Wars than the Sequel Disney trilogy. Let me explain why:

1. The Plot

It's a simple but original hero's journey story about a blonde-haired hero, who is tired of his daily routine living with his guardians, and wants to go out and explore the universe. Eventually, he gets pulled into a battle against an evil dictator who wants to take over his world using a giant laser, and ventures into many unique and interesting worlds to outrun a highly incompetent group of soldiers, one of which is a pub with some shady figures. His sidekicks include a British guy who complains about everything and a princess who knows a good deal about computers and hacking. And eventually, our protagonist saves the day by believing in himself and destroying the giant laser.
This plot is way more unique, original, and inspiring than the new movies, which include a blatant copy of A New Hope, an insulting legacy-destroyer that tries to subvert expectations by killing all our favorite characters, and the worst movie of all time that destroyed Star Wars forever (and possibly films in general)!

2. The Characters

TJ Miller, who got wrongly cancelled a few years ago, plays Gene, the Meh emoji, a universally relatable hero who wants to do more than his lot in life. James Corden plays Hi-5, a funny and relatable side character with hilarious and not-at-all annoying one-liners. Jailbreak is an example of a great female character, who's so unbelievably good at hacking without explanation but also secretly wants to be a princess, and also stands up to sexism in clearly-defined ways (much like Ahsoka, a good female SW character), and also falls in love with the first plain guy she meets. And of course, Sir Patrick Stewart, Picard himself, plays a piece of shit! Talk about subverting expectations!
As opposed to the sequels, which ruins all our favorite characters by either making them sad and old (Han, Leia, Luke) or giving them nothing to do (Chewie, C3PO, R2D2). They also introduce bland, no-note characters like MaRey Sue, Poe (who does nothing), Finn (who does nothing), Kylo Ren (a whiny brat), Holdo (also a Mary Sue who's also incompetent) and worst of all Rose (the character, not the actress)!

3. The Dialogue

There are some fantastic and memorable lines in The Emoji Movie. Tell me you don't get goosebumps when you hear these quotes:
  • "We're number two!"
  • "Maybe I'm meant to have more than just one emotion!"
  • "Throw some sauce on that dance burrito!"
  • "Women are always coming up with stuff that men are taking credit for!"
  • "You're so soft poop!"
  • "#blessed!"
  • "We have to get to Dropbox!"
  • "What if you get sent out on the phone and make the wrong face?"
  • "That's a sweet emoji you got there."
Compare this to the sequels, which don't have any good lines that people remember, and certainly nothing that can be memed, unlike the prequels and their memorable dialogue. Well, except for the very last line "Rey Skywalker." This line was so bad, even though it was meant to be the capper fo the trilogy and an extremely powerful and emotional scene, that Reddit has made fun of it ad nauseum because no one can take it seriously as she clearly didn't deserve that title!

4. The World Building

There are so many original and unique worlds in The Emoji Movie, such as the Emoji Selector, the Data Mainframe, the Pub, and Spotify. In addition, there are constant references to real world products in The Emoji Movie, such as Dropbox, Candy Crush, Crackle, Just Dance, and the Twitter bird saving the day in a pivotal scene. Plus, there's plenty of slang as mentioned above like "Slay," "Shade," "NBD," and "#blessed." This connects the dialogue to our modern world, making the film both timely and timeless.
Meanwhile, the sequels have no such world-building. They only have another sand planet, another shady pub, a bunch of Star Destroyers, another Death Star, a planet made of salt (which is basically Hoth with some red on it, don't kid yourselves), another throne room for the Emperor, and the casino planet CANTO BIGHT, which is OBJECTIVELY the worst scene in Star Wars history!

5. No Politics

The Disney movies disregarded any semblance of a story they had by forcing politics into their movies, what with their messages of "women can be heroes" and "the galaxy is diverse" and "We should stand up to oppression" and "Fascist dictatorships are bad."
By contrast, The Emoji Movie contains no such politics, that have ruined many films released after the 2016 election. It simply tells a timeless story of a man with an odd hairstyle and a rambling mouth, who says things that shouldn't be said in society, and overthrows a blonde female leader who wants to maintain the peaceful status quo, which helps him Make Textoplis Great Again!

6. The Studio

The most recent Star Wars movies were all made my Disney, the global conglomerate entertainment company that owns a monopoly on pop culture, and uses it to make horrible movies that push agendas. In addition to Star Wars, they ruined the MCU with overrated films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel, plus the overrated Avengers: Endgame, and Martin Scorsese was right to say that those movies are not cinema. They also ruined Pixar with unnecessary sequels, pumped out a bunch of live-action remakes with no soul, and even produced some other overrated animated films like Frozen, Tangled, Moana, the overrated and political Zootopia, and Ralph Breaks the Internet (which coincidentally stole its plot from The Emoji Movie, showing how great the latter movie really was and how creatively bankrupt Disney is).
By contrast, The Emoji Movie was released by Sony Pictures, a small indie studio behind the Spider-Man movies (which Disney tried to take from Sony to expand their entertainment empire), which is clearly their most valuable IP, as they've taken care of it well with The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Venom, and Morbius. Sony is also responsible for amazing reboots like the new Ghostbusters, Charlie's Angels, The Dark Tower, Angry Birds, The Smurfs, RoboCop and Men in Black International, plus a bunch of Adam Sandler movies, all of which are subversive masterpieces no one saw or liked because they weren't made by Disney. Sony's willingness to make movies that no one asked for or wanted gives them originality points for not playing it safe, while Disney constantly makes sequels and spin-offs with characters people clearly love. This may translate to strong box-office and critical acclaim, but don't let that fool you into thinking they're good movies, because they're all paid shills. So Sony wins by being more willing to take risks with their IP's.

CONCLUSION

After giving it much thought, it is my objectively right opinion that The Emoji Movie is both a better movie and a better representation of Star Wars than Disney's Star Wars, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a paid Disney shill!

UK side hustle live poker performance - year 1 results and thoughts

UK side hustle live poker performance - year 1 results and thoughts
This is about 9 months out of date but I wrote this to help consider my results and then couldn't decide where to post it. Having recently got myself a Reddit account, this seems the place.
----
A little history:
When I was 20 I considered dropping out of Uni and becoming a poker player. I had earned £18K profit across the previous year, and that is a lot of money for a student! Especially in the UK, where because poker is classed as a game of luck there is no tax on the winnings of gambling, it felt more like £25K. A significant “salary” for any 20 year old.
Then I started looking at the data behind that and realised that I was averaging almost 70 hours a week grinding 6 tables simultaneously at small stakes to make that profit. In fact my income per hour was just £5.37. Not awful, but hardly worth dropping out of Uni. Suddenly that profit didn’t feel so great anymore.
I tried moving up in stakes, from $20 buy-in’s to $50 buy-in’s, but in a month I lost £3K. The next level contained professionals, and the UK Government can pretend all it wants, but when you’re playing many thousands of hands, skill starts to overcome the short term coin-flips and variances. It was brutal. It was humbling. I wasn’t good enough, simply put, to do it full time and make decent money… so I decided to focus on graduating.
When I was 30 I decided I would try a bit more seriously again, but in casinos. I’d played in casinos sporadically over those 10 years (actually ended up in one with the woman who is now my wife, after I “accidently” missed my last train home when I saw her in a London pub), and although I felt I was a profitable and solid player, you need to be mindful not to kid yourself. So I approached things systematically, recording data for 12 months to see what stood out and lessons I could learn.

The results are in!
· I am indeed profitable. The data told me I had made a total of £8,279 in profit.
· I am fairly consistent, achieving a winning session 53 times from 77 visits, or 69%.
· I played 337.75 hours, meaning an hourly profit of £24.51, or annualised a take-home salary of £48K after tax, which is £68K before.
· I earned on average 14 “big blinds” an hour, a key metric for cash game players. At small stakes, anything over 5 is respectable, over 10 is great. I’ve heard it said 80% of small stake players are loss making, which seems a bit high to me, but I can easily imagine 60% are.
Better still, my graph has very few swings. Interestingly though, I only had 2 amazing nights where I won >£1500, which probably means I played slightly too safe. I confess I did seek to minimise variance where possible, feeling that I was better than 80% of the players I was against, so I didn’t need to take 50-55% marginally favourable coinflips.

Now because my sessions were of different lengths, it’s not immediately obvious if a £100 profit is good or bad. I mean if I’ve played 4 hours, it’s average, 2 hours, it’s fantastic, and 8 hours, pretty meh.
So I took another look and blended the sessions instead across number of hands played, producing the below graph, showing a level of consistency I am genuinely proud of. Roughly speaking, I make £1 per hand played.

OK Great, but what did I learn from this? Data is lovely and all (as is £8K!), but really you want insight from that data you can action to improve performance.

Wait, I did better at larger stakes?
Well firstly, there are a few things I found counter intuitive. Take the below, which shows the stakes I played at. In theory, you earn less the higher your stakes go as competition increases, but I didn’t see that at all.

Playing at stakes 50% higher (£3 an “orbit” versus £2 an orbit – more significant than it might sound), my hourly was a whopping 600% higher. Put another way, I played just over twice as much £1/£2 as I did £1/£1, but made 13x as much profit! Surprising indeed, and massively unexpected.
I am planning on playing some £1/£3 and £2/£5 once I grow my bankroll this year, it’ll be interesting to see if this trend continues, or if there’s something else going on not immediately obvious to me.

Day of the week – weekends are worse?!
Another unexpected development was found when looking at the days I was playing. I had expected that I’d be much better on Friday and Saturday when more amateurs would play and I’d be able to target them, but I found the opposite. Friday’s I made £2.47 an hour, Saturday’s £12.52, both way off my average, and across quite large sample sizes too (>55% of sessions between them).
Meanwhile Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday all had ~10%+ of sessions, but saw hourly profit doubling my averages. My best hourly is Sunday, although I have never lost money on a Wednesday, so a close call as to which is my best.

https://preview.redd.it/v10rt8fkgod51.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f3b3c4e57acd27dd00a70c1bc6fe05276270c38
After reflecting on these trends I started to realise something. Poker is essentially a game of knowledge and imperfect information. A key part of that is “position” (where you sit in each hand), where being later to act means you have access to more information, and “ranges” (what hands your opponents are likely to have), where depending on the position somebody plays a hand in and how they play it, you can start putting them on a range of cards. Nobody sane would bet with 7 players to act behind them with 2 7 off-suit, literally the worse starting hand, for example.
More experienced players play more predictably, and I was much better at sparring with them because I have a good grasp of the fundamentals. I think my fairly conservative playing style is also more suited to regular players, as I tend to take fewer risks and so don’t punish mistakes as harshly.
Finally, my risk adverse approach also fooled regular players into thinking I had weaker hands than I did, so I was able to mess with their attempts to put me on a range. Likewise I tended to just call, and rarely raise, any hand I wanted to play pre-flop, so I could disguise my hand and out-play after the flop. Again this isn’t traditional at all, but many of my bigger pots came about this way.

Central casinos have easier competition

Less surprising was my split in where I made the most money. Tellingly, Empire and Hippodrome are based in central London and are tourist destinations. I find the competitors objectively worse than I am, as a whole. The Vic and Aspers are less central, with the consensus being that Aspers was the toughest £1/£2 in London, consisting almost entirely of regulars and semi-pro’s. I mean, who wants to go to East London as a tourist? There’s way more glitz and glamour in Leicester Square and so much more appealing. The Vic is West London so less extreme, but a similar situation, it’s pretty out the way compared to central two.

Length of session
Lastly, something that was unknown to me was that I would see such an obvious split in hourly profit based on the amount of hours I was playing in that session:

https://preview.redd.it/m9cs1n0xgod51.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=e23b60a18ef1f3cb6f77b32c92e12626f8450f3e
Here, we see a jump in profit after 4 hours, and really between 4-8 hours is my sweet spot, running at 50% more than my average. I think after I have played at the same table for 4+ hours, that I am observant enough to spot certain patterns. One of my favourite tricks is to identify regulars targeting tourists, and re raise them. You know their range will be wide to target the less good player, so you take advantage of them trying to take advantage. This is especially good if you have a good position (so act after them), so that if they do call you can play the hand with more information.
The drop-off at the end likely indicates that after 8 hours I start making bad decisions. Reviewing this, not only am I probably a bit tired, but I think those sessions I am on “winners tilt”, and I must be winning or else I wouldn’t be there after 8 hours. But when you’re up and doing well, you tend to play hands you shouldn’t and make bad decisions that cost you, it can feel like there’s less cost in getting it wrong because you’re still in profit, even though it can cost more in terms of £s. Once I became aware of this in myself, I started seeing it in others. There’s a regular at the Hippodrome who is a dangerous and good player, but becomes reckless and likes a gamble when they are up. If he has lots of chips, I always try and sit at his table, and look to get it in when I am a 60-80% favourite, and hope my luck holds.

What’s next?
I’ve taken 2 months away from the casino’s to make sure I don’t have a problem and focus on a work project, and I’m looking forward to starting this year on the 29th November. I suppose starting on a Friday isn’t ideal, but it aligns nicely with my wife’s office Xmas party, so oh well! That said, I will make sure I play the £1/£2 at the Hippodrome for 4-8 hours. As it will be a Friday I’ll look to punish mistakes more aggressively and make fewer assumptions about the other players and their cards if they seem less experienced.
Let’s see if I can take the lessons learned across this year, and drive further improvements to make more money, improving on my operational performance, the real purpose of data in my opinion.

I Logged Into The Wrong Twitter Account (3)

I’m back. Sorry I didn’t answer many comments yesterday, but after the big reveal I got busy making a list of things that are different between my world and yours.
I will first try to answer some of the most pressing questions, and then I will try to share some more details.

If this is the first time you read me, here’s the abridged version of my story: I logged into my Twitter account but messed up the password, and spoke with my dead friend (part 1). Later, a strange void tried to consume me, and when I snapped out of it, the biggest terrorist attack in history had happened (part 2).
Don’t bother trying to look for it. The Leicester Square Massacre has apparently not happened in your side, because as it turns out, I’m not only logged into the wrong Twitter, but also the wrong Reddit.

So, let me tell you about the Leicester Square Massacre. As I mentioned earlier, it has been called the biggest terrorist attack in history and, at this point, I doubt that there’s any hyperbole there. Although the details are still a bit fuzzy, news outlets claim that the death toll is on the five figures.
What has transpired, and please take into account that all of this might be wrong, is that this dude who was upset by the whole Brexit situation had stored several bombs at several spots all across London, and yesterday in the early afternoon they all went off at around the same time... Harrods, Big Ben, the Eye… Some outlets claim there were as many as fifteen different locations.
In Leicester Square alone there were over six bombs that went off in less than ten seconds. They were set up to cause the most possible damage both to people and buildings, and after the explosions, the Empire Casino , the Odeon, and other buildings were reduced to rubble, trapping hundreds more.
Right now London is closed down. As it turns out, they never found the bomber, even after sharing his photo all over the news, so people are worried that there might be a second attack soon. We are all encouraged to stay home; airports are closed; roads are blocked with military controls; all the usual touristy areas are under heavy police surveillance…

Speaking of the bomber, edgeboy69 gave me the tip I needed. He was indeed the guy I had spoken to at the pub when looking for Chris. Fuck. Now I also have a stinging feeling that I might have been the thing that pushed him over the edge. I’ve tried very hard not to think about it, and I’ll go to the police after writing this.
Texxon1898 was concerned about Tyra’s behaviour and mug-throwing. I wish I could tell you different, but it’s not the first time that something like this has happened. We weren’t in the best of spots, and truth be told, it was a matter of time before the verbal fencing became physical. Currently, I have no idea where she is, or any of my friends. I’m really concerned that simply speaking about them might bring the void back. I have no idea who to ca
I’m back. Sorry about that. As I was writing earlier there was another bomb much closer to home, and the power went out. I had to leave my house mid-sentence and check what was going on, and it’s much worse that I thought. I’m leaving my mid-sentence, despite what every creative teacher has ever told me, as a stark reminder that things are happening almost as we speak.

It seems like the whole fabric of society is breaking down. The latest bomb wasn’t a terrorist thing, it was apparently some gang that has used the confusion to take control of a whole street. They apparently managed to steal a tank in the chaos, and they have set up barricades around a nearby church. With the police and military busy with the aftermath of the massacre, it was up to the neighbours to fight against the gang members, and it has apparently gone bad fast. I didn’t want to get involved, so I stayed far from the area, but even then I could see that there have set up some spikes with heads on them, Game of Thrones style.
As I was walking back to my place I decided to check what was happening on the other side, through Twitter. Of course, there were no mentions of any attacks or gangs, just a perfect happy world where everyone is smiling and the only things wrong with the world are crazed up billionaires who are so out of our influence sphere that it’s almost useless to care about them.
I took a picture with the rubble of some of the riots from the night before, and considered uploading it, just to see what would happen, and then the Void attacked again.

This time it was bigger, and I could feel the sudden rush of air and pressure. You know in scifi movies when someone blows a hole in the side of a ship in space? It was sort of like that, a feeling that everything was being sucked into the hole, into some empty vacuum.
It was only there for a second, but when it left there was a strange afterimage, like a part of the scenery was drawn by a different artist, if that makes any sense.
I ran back to my place. I feel like I’m risking everything by writing this, but at the same time, I feel an obligation to keep you informed. There’s also some peace of mind knowing that somewhere, somehow, everything is still normal.
Anyway, I’m writing this on my phone (so please excuse any typos), I have 3% battery left, and the power is still out. It might be awhile before I can speak with you again. I know I told you I would share a list of changes between my world and yours, but that will have to wait for part 4.
Thanks for all your comments and support; you are really making me feel better.
Edit: Part 4 is here
Edit 2: Part 5 and finale is here

Hi all! Just brainstorming ideas for adventures and I thought I might as well post this one in case other GMs can make use of it. While I'm personally running old WEG d6 system campaigns, this scenario is just as easily thrust into a campaign set in EotE or any Star Wars setting at all!

Summary & Background

A group of free-traders/smugglers takes on a seemingly straightforward job for a crime boss on a lax shadowport. It turns out, however, that customs aren't as laissez-faire as they used to be; they lose the cargo and their boss is pissed. They must recover the cargo and get the man his credits in three days or risk his ire.
This assumes the party is your typical Firefly/EotE smuggling/tramp freighter crew, although, as you will see, any Alliance sympathizers will find a particular interest in this scenario. One or more of the party members likely owes a debt/favor to or is involved with a crime boss or kingpin, and this adventure will fit right in with attempting to appease that vindictive, crazy MF!
While you lore buffs will note that technically the Tundei antagonists don't take power until post-Endor, this adventure can easily be set during the days of the Rebellion or even Rise of the Empire. You just need to retcon the Tundei to take power early.

Intro

The party has been contracted by "the Boss" (a seedy businessman, crime lord, etc.) to transport some medical supplies to the Core world of Abregado-rae. While the medical supplies (probably bacta and the like) aren't strictly illegal, they're controlled substances and subject to high import tariffs, hence the Boss's desire for a more under-the-radar delivery system.
While Abregado-rae is a Core world, it is also a famed shadowport, just as seedy and crime-ridden as Ord Mantell. The Boss informs the party of this fact, and any seasoned smuggler worth his salt and a good knowledge role will be able to corroborate this information. All-in-all, it looks to be a cut-and-dry, straightforward job with easy money. The job is payment on delivery; they'll have to meet up with their contact in LoBue Cantina and complete the transaction. It's important to note that without the goods the party won't get paid, and if they don't get paid, the Boss doesn't get paid. Their cut will be 20,000 credits. The Boss says he'll check in with them after their arrival on Abregado-rae.

What They Don't Know

There are two crucial pieces of info to which the party is not privy.
1) Abregado-rae has recently come under the sway of a new political entity in the system: the Tundei. Ruled by a triumvirate (a human, a Devaronian, and the founding Herglic, Shelov), the Tundei are comprised of offworlders who seek to make Abregado-rae respectable. They have cracked down on smuggling and illicit activity in the spaceport, limited the rights of the native Moochers and Gados, imposed semi-martial law, and encouraged the growth of the planet's unremarkable manufacturing industry in the hopes of stimulating the planet's economy. This takeover began when wealthy offworlders began buying up interests and bribing local officials, worming their way into the planet's politics. Ten months ago it culminated in a tense resignation of the previous government that was a coup in all but name. It's been long enough that the Tundei have had time to establish themselves as the governing force, but not long enough for such relatively trivial news to diffuse throughout the Rim. Even the Boss is not aware of this turn of events.
2) Not everyone was happy with the changes. Some locals fled into the surrounding Gado Hills and formed the Resistance, which the Tundei have termed the Separatists. However, due to Tundei control of all spaceports and the recent curtailing of smuggling activities, the Resistance is short on supplies. It was one of their agents, Phils Vaand (human male), who contacted the Boss. He emphasized caution, but in the limited communications that took place he was unable or did not think to mention the recent changes that had taken place. The medical supplies are bound for Resistance hands, though no one knows this except their contact on the planet.

The Complications

Upon arrival in Abregado Spaceport, the party is approached in the docking bay by a stuffy customs official, a diminutive customs droid, and two security officers armed with stun batons and blasters. The official is curt and the officers grim and intractable. The party should truly be alarmed by the drastic difference in what they expected to encounter and what has actually greeted them. The customs official checks the presumed captain's starship operating license and other paperwork, sinking into bureaucratic dogma, while the droid checks out the ship. Of course, they find the medical supplies (If they hid it, have them roll for it and all, but the droid has scanning equipment that detects the compartments). Since it is a controlled substance, the party must pay a hefty fine - more than they have or could scrounge up. In lieu of pecuniary penalization, their ship is impounded until such a time as they are able to cough up. And, needless to say, the cargo is impounded.
It is at this point that the Boss chooses to give them a buzz on the old comlink/holovideo chat. They can lie, they can tell the truth, they can roll well or poorly, but in the end he's still royally pissed, either believing them to be incompetent or to be double crossing him and keeping the cash for themselves. He gives them three days to scrounge up the credits... or else.

Abregado-rae

There are several options here. The spaceport and surrounding city (Abregado) are built on the coast of the eastern continent. The climate is temperate and there are many canals crisscrossing through much of the city. The locals typically get around by walking or via aquatic skimmers and speeders. Beyond the city limits are gentle hills, woodlands, and lakes dotted with villages.
Fleshing out Abregado is up to you, but here are some important set pieces, locations, and notes:
Locals
The locals are a mix of Gados (lanky fuzzy folks) and humans, with a sizable minority of other aliens, especially those that can be found up and down the Rimma (Gran, Herglic, Devaronian, Sullustan, Givin, Bith, Duros, Baragwin). There are also the native Moochers - furry reptilian humanoids who hang around the spaceports and, well, mooch.
The general attitude ranges from bewilderment to discontent to indifference.
The pros of the new Regime:
The cons:
Amenities & Establishments
The most common means of transportation is via water speeders - repulsorlift vehicles that play the same role as gondolas in Venice.
Important note: Traffic in and out of the city is being heavily monitored. Every road has a checkpoint set up with security officers and clerks taking down names, business, and other information. It will be difficult getting out; it will be nearly impossible getting back in. Your players will have to be at their most charming and most persuasive indeed.
Before the Tundei came to power Abregado-rae was known for its many waterfront saloons, resorts, and casinos - The Star of Chance, Lost Lovers Casino, Le Yer Resort, Njinska's Tavern, and the Triple Nova Casino. The Tundei, however, in their quest to respectablilify the planet, shut down many of these establishments. A few subdued locales remain, but many sit derelict or have been demolished or re-purposed.
The only other sites of note are the growing manufacturing and industrial zones and the sprouting rows of tenement houses for local and off-world workers.
Law Enforcement & the Regime
The police force has been beefed up with Tundei. Think something akin to watered-down ESPO - stun batons, blasters, some blast armor. They get around on waveskimmers (jet skis in SPEHS), water speeders (like real-world police patrol boats), urban landspeeders (V-19, Seraph-class), and, when the need arises, a couple squadrons of airspeeders and Talon I cloud cars. The biggest station is located beside the customs office and actually adjoins it.
The Tundei are a regime, but they're not entirely totalitarian, nor are they truly evil (indeed many, even in the upper strata, believe they are working toward a better society for the planet's people). They're certainly not as totalitarian as the Empire or the Corporate Sector. They're more like CSA wannabees with a touch of puritanism and communist work ethic and drive for industrialization.
Spaceport Customs & Police Station
Located at the nexus of a web of docking bays, this place used to be a joke. Now it's a busy, well-oiled machine. Aside from customs officials, clerks, and droids, this place is also home to the largest police station in the city. The cargo is taken here, stowed in an adjacent warehouse within the police compound. The ship is in an impound lot nearby. The compound is surrounded by a high, electrified fence with barbed wire atop it. What's inside the station is up to you, but it could include a reception area, offices, an interrogation room, equipment lockers, a lounge, holding cells, a speeder garage with urban speeder bikes and landspeeders inside, and an armory.
LoBue Cantina
This is where the deal was supposed to go down. If the party still goes here they'll find Phils Vaand waiting for them. When he hears what happened he's not surprised, but tries to enlist their help in getting the supplies back. This will require breaking into the police station somehow. Phils has limited resources, but he can supply some small-arms and maybe even a few explosives. Perhaps if they go around town they'll find some good-sized fusion cutters, or maybe they can get some locals to cause a distraction. It's up the party how they want to play this.
The cantina itself is one of a handful that managed to escape the general culling and foreclosure of pubs and other unsavory locations when the Regime came into power. The owner, a Herglic by the name of Gloss Hwolool, was able to avert ruin by offering a discount on drinks to all factory workers - a show of support for the Tundei and a morale boost to their workforce. Still, Gloss is as pragmatic as he is cautious; he knows the Regime is bad for business and wants things back to the way they were. He won't, however, actually take any direct action against the Regime.
Despite its newfound respectability, LoBue remains one of the choicest spots in the city for clandestine activities. It is known for the Incredible Sharlees - two Gados in tophats and canes who do a dance routine every fourth cycle. Its signature drink is the Gusher, a cocktail so carbonated that it spouts up in the air like water from a whale's blowhole. Herglics are especially fond of this drink.
Resistance Camp
Located on the shores of a lake in the hills, this place is hidden but not that hidden - the Tundei don't care if these people want to play Robin Hood and Rebels out here. As long as they're out of sight and continue to not be a real threat, they won't devote the time or resources to rooting them out. There are perhaps a couple hundred Separatists in the camp on any given day. They have access to some landspeeders and airspeeders, but they're running low on ammo, medicine, and food, and the local villages can only supply so much. Still, they could make useful allies. The Resistance may be sympathetic to the Alliance (after all, they both fight totalitarian regimes), so any Rebel characters may find themselves quite at home rallying the populace and fighting against tyranny.

How It Goes Down

The options here are quite open-ended. Maybe the party sneaks in; maybe they rile up the locals into an angry mob and storm the place; maybe they set fire in a factory or two and while the police are all focused on that they hightail it in and out. Heck, they could even try to come up with the credits another way (though this should be quite tricky - after all, their cut alone was 20 grand; perhaps it'll be useful to note the number of casinos in the city). This is where it's up to you and the players' imagination to get them out of this tight scrape.
In the end, however (assuming they're successful), they should get the equipment, get their ship, get the goods to the Resistance, get paid, and make tracks out of the Abregado system, preferably with urban cruisers, cloud cars, and maybe even a customs vessel on their tails. Imagine a James Bond-style chase scene through the canals of the city on skimmers!
As previously stated, their cut is 20,000 big ones, and they're now a little more in the Boss's good graces... for now.

Thanks for reading! I hope you can make use of this scenario in your adventures. If you can't, maybe it's at least provided some inspiration. Feedback is encouraged and most kindly appreciated. :)
