Having Issues with your driver? Read here!

Before you start - Make sure you Submit Feedback for your Nvidia Driver Issue
There is only one real way for any of these problems to get solved, and that’s if the Driver Team at Nvidia knows what those problems are. So in order for them to know what’s going on it would be good for any users who are having problems with the drivers to Submit Feedback to Nvidia. A guide to the information that is needed to submit feedback can be found here.
Additionally, if you see someone having the same issue you are having in this thread, reply and mention you are having the same issue. The more people that are affected by a particular bug, the higher the priority that bug will receive from NVIDIA!!
Common Troubleshooting Steps
If it still crashes, we have a few other troubleshooting steps but this is fairly involved and you should not do it if you do not feel comfortable. Proceed below at your own risk:
If you are still having issue at this point, visit GeForce Forum for support or contact your manufacturer for RMA.
Common Questions
Bear in mind that people who have no issues tend to not post on Reddit or forums. Unless there is significant coverage about specific driver issue, chances are they are fine. Try it yourself and you can always DDU and reinstall old driver if needed.

Remember, driver codes are extremely complex and there are billions of different possible configurations. The software will not be perfect and there will be issues for some people. For a more comprehensive list of open issues, please take a look at the Release Notes. Again, I encourage folks who installed the driver to post their experience here... good or bad.

Essential settings to help your PC last longer

Essential settings to help your PC last longer
Hi All,
I have been using the Zephyrus M15 for about 6 months. It is an incredible laptop but I have gathered some extremely important settings I had to set for the laptop to last long. With at least my default settings, my laptop was sure to get fried in no time.

#1 Change Sleep State from S0 to S3
Putting your laptop to sleep is not as straightforward as you thought. There are apparently four sleep states in Windows 10 and my laptop came with "S0" state as default. You can check your default sleep state by opening CMD as Administrator and entering the command:
powercfg /A
S0 state roughly implies that, although you have put your laptop to sleep, background applications could still run. This means your CPU temps could rise without control while your fans don't work. The fix is to change the sleep state to "S3", the traditional sleep state that the cheapebudget/older laptops have. This is not as simple as it sounds as there are no robust ways to do this. The below post from the Dell XPS subreddit explains how to change sleep state to S3. However, this ONLY works with the latest October 20H2 update, not with the previous versions.
Disclaimer: the fix uses a registry edit, so please exercise extreme caution while using regedit. See the "EDIT" section of the post to view the fix.
Getting back S3 sleep and disabling modern standby under Windows 10 >=2004 : Dell (reddit.com)
This fix might not work for future Windows updates so future users might have to live with the abysmal, non-functional, self-destructive S0 sleep state.

#2 Prevent laptop from waking up from sleep without your input
Now that I fixed the sleep state, I had to make sure the laptop does not wake up from without my prompt. Apparently, with default configuration, the laptop DOES wake up on its own. There are various reasons why your laptop might behave like this, but one of the most common causes is due to network activity. Follow the steps in the below link to prevent your network adapter from waking your laptop:
How to Stop Network Activity from Waking Your Windows PC (howtogeek.com)

#3 Disable Auto Screen Timeout
I have no idea why this happens, but when my laptop screen is turned off, the fans would not work and the CPU temps would reach dangerous levels. So, do the below each time for each power profile - Silent, Performance, and Turbo

https://preview.redd.it/n002pgm5zuf61.jpg?width=1776&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52c3c76bd20153163652628a4fb0a72a904fea47

#4 Make Armoury Crate open on startup
Opening Armoury crate app is essential to start your AURA settings, that is, your custom keyboard RGB settings. Follow these steps to make Armoury crate launch on startup. After it launches once, you can close it soon after that.
Add an app to run automatically at startup in Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

#5 Tweak CPU Turbo Boost
Now we come to the gaming settings. To help CPU temps stay under control in general, it is best to change your "CPU Turbo Boost" mode. By following the steps in the below video, you can enable "Processor power management" in the advanced power settings. Although the video was posted for Zephyrus G14, it works with any laptop with Windows 10 update 20xx.
(2) Zephyrus G14 : How to disable Turbo Boost in registry editor? - YouTube
By default, you will see that the processor performance boost state would be at "Aggressive", which is quite evidently not the most desirable. I personally keep it at "Efficient Aggressive at Guaranteed" while plugged in and "Disabled" while on battery. Make sure to do this for every power plan - Silent, Performance, Turbo.
Also, I personally set "Maximum processor state" to 99, just to make sure the CPU does not overheat.

#6 Undervolt CPU
Zephyrus M15 already comes with a small default CPU undervolt. Undervolting a bit more could help your CPU temps stay down. Follow only the undervolting part of this video - ignore everything else:

#7 NVIDIA Drivers and NVIDIA Power settings
This section is ONLY for laptops not desktops in case a desktop owner is viewing this post.
To have your hardware functioning properly, you need to have ONLY THE DRIVERS DISTRIBUTED BY YOUR LAPTOP MANUFACTURER. In case of NVIDIA GPU, this means NOT UPDATING YOUR DRIVERS THORUGH THE NVIDIA GeForce Experience application.
For laptops, "latest" drivers do not really mean "best". The functioning of the laptop is heavily dependent on the design choice of the manufacturer so you must absolutely make sure to use only the drivers distributed by the manufacturer.
You must always update your drivers through the MyASUS application ONLY. Whenever there is a "red dot"/"blue dot" on a downloadable, it means it is an update. Example image given in the below post:
Should I download the new updates from MyASUS app? : ZephyrusG14 (reddit.com)
This follows that, it is not wise to disable any ASUS service, even the seemingly dubious ones like "ASUS promotion", as there is a good chance that they are essential for the functioning of the laptop.
Make sure you TURN OFF automatic driver updates in the GeForce Experience app.

Now that this is cleared and you have the correct NVIDIA drivers distributed by ASUS, you now need to change a setting NVIDIA Control Panel. Keep the Global settings intact, and set "Power management mode" to "NVIDIA driver-controlled" individually for every different game you play:

https://preview.redd.it/b3b90ehcavf61.png?width=1285&format=png&auto=webp&s=501352da2a49579d16b6f599d05ef8403c8bd05d
With the global setting , I used to get 90 DEGREE CELSIUS CPU-GPU TEMP while playing Witcher 3, but now I get 75-79 DEGREE CELSIUS.

#8 Disable automatic driver updates
Following the above argument of using only ASUS distributed drivers, I made sure to disable automatic driver updates by Windows 10. Follow the steps in the below link to disable auto driver updates:
How to Disable Automatic Driver Downloads on Windows 10 | Laptop Mag

#9 SSD - Disable Disk Defrag in Antivirus
If you have an antivirus suite, it might come with a default disk defrag schedule. Make sure to turn this off. Disk defrag is known to degrade SSD performance over time.

Additional Recommendations
  1. For measuring CPU-GPU temps, I personally do not trust MSI Afterburner for laptops. Laptops already have a delicate firmware developed by the manufacturer and I don't want MSI afterburner to interfere with the firmware with its GPU overclocking ability. I instead use Open Hardware Monitor. To view temps you can always Alt-Tab from the game to get an approximate reading.
  2. This might be a strong suggestion, but I don't recommend getting the 4K version of M15. Since the laptop display is by default connected to the integrated graphics, I am experiencing jittery/lag behavior while scrolling. It is likely the integrated graphics is insufficient for smooth 4K experience. Getting the 300Hz version would be the best course of action.

New to Zune? Need a refresher? Please start here before asking for help.

Microsoft abandoned the Zune some time ago, hoping to sweep their $1 billion failure under the rug. But the community is still alive and well, and perhaps with more enthusiasm now than ever before. However, antiquated software and hardware can be difficult to use with modern machines. But I, as well as the rest of this community, are here to help.
Before I get to the basics, I'll start by mentioning that anything you may need to download during these processes is available in the other pinned post, titled Zune Archive. It contains everything from the desktop software to games and applications. It's all there and is frequently updated.
So, you're new here, and possibly to Zunes as a whole. Where do you start? You'll probably want to download the Zune desktop software. It's required to sync media files from your PC to any Zune device. It's compatible with Windows XP to Windows 10, though up-to-date versions of Win10 have been known to have issues with installation. We don't yet know what causes some people's Win10 machines to fail during installation.
Anyways, you've downloaded and installed the software. Now you might getting an update error when you connect your Zune to your PC. This means your Zune is out of date. Prior to 2014, your PC would automatically download and install the firmware update to your Zune, but without MS's support, we're on our own. Thankfully, u/kahuna900 has made our lives easier with ZuneUpdate.com. This, in tandem with my tutorial video should get your Zune updated and working properly with the software (be sure to take note of the top comment pinned on the YouTube video).
The rest is pretty self explanatory. Add your media to your Zune library and set your sync options.
Here are a few more tips for tackling other common issues:

Sleep is Paramount for achieving anything in life [Advice]

One thing that’s taken me nearly 32 years to figure out is that sleep matters above just about everything else. Nothing else has had as positive an effect on my life and overall happiness as fixing my sleep. If you want to get disciplined with anything in life, fix your sleep first. Not sleeping well makes reaching all other goals 10x harder.
A couple years ago, there was a 1.5 year period where I was getting up at 4am every day and working for 6 hours. After each shift, I’d be so wrecked I’d have to take a nap to get anything done. I’d wake up feeling groggy as hell for the entire day, and have zero inclination to go to the gym, or work on my goals, or even have fun with my hobbies. I literally just wanted to doze on the couch some more, and the entire day would basically be ruined. The next morning I’d get up and repeat it all again.
My “sleep debt” built up so much I became a complete zombie. I couldn’t think, I was perpetually stuck in a “brain fog”. My vocabulary took a hit -words would always be “right on the tip of my tongue” but never quite there. Like a disorganised filing cabinet, I could never lookup the words when I needed them. My thoughts were scattered. My brain was mush.
Physically I was weaker, with less energy. Coffee didn’t help. I played less sports, I went on less walks, I spent more time on the couch or in my bed. In the gym, all my lifts went down massively – I’m talking 20-30% from my max strength levels. I also feel more shakey, less stable, less “strong” and just shit overall.
And I did this to myself for 1.5 years. Insane.
Other people aren’t much better. More than 33% of American adults don’t get 7 or more hours sleep each day. People love to be martyrs and brag about how little sleep they’ve had, like some sort of weird badge of honour. I used to be one of them; now I brag about how much sleep I’ve had.
When I’m consistent with my 8hrs sleep, everything is a million times easier. I have motivation that just isn’t there when I’m sleep-deprived. Writing is a joy instead of a grind; words flow effortlessly from my mind to the page. The gym is fun, instead of absolute hell. Talking to girls is easy, instead of a god damn chore.
Everyone who’s been chronically sleep-deprived and then made an effort to fix it can attest to how much more alive you feel on adequate sleep.
So how do we actually get that sleep?

Blue-Light-Blocking Glasses

(I have photos and examples for everything here)
There’s a reason these are on the top of my list – they’re the single-biggest contributor to me getting great sleep. There’s not a single night – ever – that I don’t use them.
We feel sleepy when our bodies produce a hormone called melatonin – known as the sleep hormone. It’s responsible for sending us to sleep, and a lack of it means we’ll stay up much later and have trouble falling asleep. We require melatonin for a healthy sleep schedule.
Melatonin production is severely reduced when we’re in the presence of blue light (such as midday sunlight, which is actually blueish in colour – our eyes just compensate so it appears white). Other things give off blue light as well – phone screens, computer screens, TV screens, many light bulbs, etc. All of these are massively-detrimental to getting a good night’s sleep, as without melatonin, you just don’t get that “I’m sleepy” feeling.
Luckily you can fix this with a super affordable pair of blue-light-blocking glasses from Amazon (affiliate link). These are the exact pair I have.
If you try nothing else from this list, try these – it’ll blow your mind how much more sleepy you’ll feel when staring at a phone/computer screen at night.
Put them on a couple hours before you’re ready to go to bed, and don’t take them off. Even in a brightly-lit room, or while staring at a phone screen, you’ll find you naturally start getting sleepy over the course of a few hours. They’ve been an absolute game-changer for me, and for all the friends and family I’ve bought a pair for. Mine have lasted me about 1.5 years – they’re pretty sturdy.
They also reduce eye-strain, particularly when using a computephone at night. If I don’t use these, my eyes tend to get tired when I’m trying to work, or watching Youtube, etc. I put the orange glasses on and the eye strain goes away. I sometimes wear my glasses them on the entire night from the moment I get home after work, until the moment I go to bed.
If you find your eyes getting sore/strained from staring at the screen too much (even during the day) – try the glasses and see if they help. They’ve been a lifesaver for me.
These glasses are also fashionable as hell and wearable outside during the day – you’ll only get a handful of weird looks from strangers!
The orange glasses also change the colour of everything you look at, and completely blocks all blue light, which is cool. Anything that normally looks blue will look black/invisible. Stare at a blue light and you’ll see what I mean. It’s pretty trippy.
You can also download apps for your phone/PC that reduce the amount of blue-light emitted (eg Flux). However, the glasses work better and affect everything that emits blue light (light bulbs, light from outside your window, etc); not just your screen.

Turn Down Your Lights Before Bed

A couple hours before you want to fall asleep, start turning down the lights in your home (turning them off is even better). You can also replace any bright/harsh light bulbs with softer (warmer), less bright bulbs – or use a softer room lamp.
The first time you try turning all your lights down (or even better – off), you’ll find you start naturally getting more and more sleepy as the night goes on. It’s extremely hard to stay awake in a dark environment. You can even try this as well: once you start feeling yourself getting tired, turn all the lights in your house back ON. You’ll find within 5 minutes you’ll be wide-awake again.

Clear Your Mind

It’s really damn hard to sleep when you have a lot on your mind; a million thoughts racing around your head. I tend to have a lot going on in my head at any one time, and have in the past found it very hard to fall asleep.
The last few years, I’ve given myself a chance to “wind down” for bed by thinking through everything I need to think through for 2 hours before I got to bed. I just sit/lie somewhere quiet (usually my couch), with all the lights in the house off, and just have a think. Other times I’ll just watch some quiet YouTube videos or a movie – letting my mind slow down before bed.
You can also do what I do and write down any ideas/thoughts that come up during this time – especially if it’s stuff you “need to do tomorrow”. Write it down on a piece of paper or use an online notebook app like Evernote. Write down anything and everything – stuff you “need to remember”, ideas you have, chores you need to do; anything you don’t want to forget. When you write it down, you’re telling yourself, “I won’t forget this, so it’s ok for me to stop thinking about it now and just go to sleep.”
Write it down and then let it go – you’ll be able to tackle it tomorrow. But for now, you need to wind down for sleep.

Wakelights

Wakelights are the coolest thing since sliced bread. They’re an alarm/lamp that works by slowly getting brighter and brighter over a period of time (usually 20-30 minutes) until eventually your room is as bright as the midday sun. It sounds cute and gimmicky but you’ll find you wake up MUCH more gently than that horrible jarring alarm sound we’re all used to.
Not to mention, once you’re awake, you’re properly awake. Because you’ve woken up gently over 20-30 minutes, your body’s had time to flush away that “groggy” feeling you often feel every morning. You’ll want to jump straight out of bed and get on with your day.
Any of the Philips wakelights are great; I use this one from Amazon (affiliate link). I bought it 3 years ago and it’s still working perfectly – I use it every morning to wake up pleasantly, feeling way more alert than before I started using it.

Bedroom as Dark as Possible

Your bedroom should always be as dark as possible – aim to eliminate all the light you possibly can. The darker your bedroom, the quicker you’ll start feeling sleepy, and the better your REM sleep will be.

Blackout Blinds:

Blackout blinds go over your windows and completely eliminate all light – they’re bloody brilliant. The ones I use are the “Gro Anywhere Blackout Blind” – I have 2 of them across my windows. Amazon have an even more affordable version here (affiliate link). They have suction caps so you can easily take them down if needed.

Eye Mask:

You can also grab an eye mask from Amazon to cut down on light – I use this one (affiliate link). Mine’s lasted me about a year so far. Bare in mind it won’t work as well as blackout blinds – even the best eye masks let a little light in around the edges/underneath. My girlfriend also can’t get hers to stay on because she tosses & turns a lot, and you may find it annoying to sleep with one pressing onto your face. I personally have no issues with any of that (mine never comes off), so your mileage may vary.

Bedroom as Quiet as Possible

A quiet bedroom is also mandatory for getting a good night’s sleep. If you’re like me and live in the middle of a busy city, ear plugs are a life-saver.
The only ones worth using are wax earplugs – particularly beeswax ones. They’re much more effective than regular foam earplugs, and because they’re mouldable and sit over your ear canal (rather than inside it), you don’t feel them as much when you wear them. These are the ones I use from Amazon (affiliate link).
The earplugs are good for about two months. After that they start to become a bit dry – they’ll still work, they’re just harder to mould into the right shape. I usually replace mine about every 1-2 months. So that kit of 12 ear plugs should last you roughly 6 months to a year.

No Caffeine/Alcohol Before Bed

Caffeine affects your ability to fall asleep, obviously. Cut out all caffeine 5-6 hours before bedtime. Remember, this includes things like tea, soft-drink (including diet), energy drinks – all of which contain caffeine.
Alcohol should also be avoided before bed. It’ll appear like it’s helping you fall asleep faster (by sedating you), but your REM sleep will be messed up and you’ll wake up feeling groggier than had you gone without.

Go to Bed at the Same Time Each Night

Having a set time you go to bed and a set time you get up each day means your body’s circadian rhythm isn’t thrown out of whack. (You should also aim to keep up the same set schedule on weekends.) You’ll find it much easier to fall asleep, and getting up won’t be so much of a chore – it’ll be an easy habit.

Colder is Better

It’s always easier to fall asleep in a cold room, and you’ll get deeper sleep too. Just keep it comfortably cold – don’t freeze your tits off.

Melatonin Supplements

You can take melatonin as a supplement to help you fall asleep faster, and it definitely works – half a pill and I’m out 30 minutes later. They’re super affordable on Amazon (affiliate link), and you only need half a pill (I don’t notice any difference between half a pill and a whole pill).
I prefer to use mine in “emergencies” – eg if I’m way too energetic and don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep for a while (especially if I have to get up early the next day). Rather than wait an hour or two for myself to naturally start feeling tired, I take half a pill and 30 minutes later I’m falling asleep.
I only take half a pill – taking more doesn’t give me more of an effect. I’ve experimented with huge doses (I once worked my way (slowly) up to 10 pills over the course of a week. Taking 10 had exactly the same effect as taking half a pill). So experiment with a dose that works for you, but you might find that like me you only need half a pill. Which means the bottle will last you a really long time.
These days I probably only take one half-pill every few weeks or months, because my sleep habits are really good. If you use it, try not to take it every night – you don’t want to use it as a band-aid to cover up shitty sleep habits. It’s always better to fix the sleep habits themselves.

Phone on “Dark Mode”

Many phones come with a “dark mode” which reverses the colours (white becomes black, black becomes white). This means your phone will be emit much less light, making it much easier to fall asleep.
It’s usually found in your phones accessibility settings – for me on Android, that’s Settings > Additional Settings > Accessibility > Colour Inversion.
You should also turn your phone’s brightness to the absolute minimum it can go if you plan on reading in bed. There are apps which can make your phone even darker than the default settings – I use Darker on Android.

HumidifieVaporizer During Winter

During winter, I’ve always struggled with cracked lips, a dry throat and even a bloody nose during the night. It took me a year or two to figure out the problem – the air is drier (less humid) during winter, and it was fucking up my skin/body.
I looked into humidifiers, and found the Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer from Amazon.
It’s extremely affordable, and mine’s lasted about 2 years at this point. No more dry/cracked skin, no more bloody noses – it’s a lifesaver. I’ve also found my sleep has naturally improved (probably because I’m breathing easier). It also naturally heats the room up a bit, which is awesome during winter.
You just fill it with water, turn it on, and let it go. Caveat: It’s a bit noisy, so definitely wear earplugs if you’re not a heavy sleepy.
If you struggle with dry skin/cracked lips/dry nose during the winter months, try this. If you don’t have issues with dry skin/throat/nose, skip it.

What's wrong whit the computer you may ask? A broken GPU RTX3070.
I think I've tried everything to fix it but nothing works. The screen flickers black randomly, sometime it can be every 5 seconds for 3 seconds, and other, it can be every 10minutes for 15 seconds, etc... Here is a list of things I tried to do to fix it (Nothing successful)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Looking for unplugged cables inside and outside the pc

-updating my graphics card driver

-deleting and redownload my graphics card driver (while not downloaded the issues seems to have stopped but I lose all performances from the card so I basically can't do anything...)

-Deactivating windows error reporting & problems report and solution (that was an early issue that causes screen flickering for some people on windows 10)

-Changing the screen Hz to every option available

-switching my HDMI cable to a faster DisplayPort to VGA cable

-connect the pc in an alone plug

-update monitor driver

-turn off all power saving options

-tried turning off g-sync but my monitor doesn't even have g-sync

-downloading a bit older version of the graphics card driver

-updating BIOS

-rollback graphics card driver

-Reset the pc !!!

-(probably more but I can't remember everything at this point)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So after all of this, I finally managed to get in contact whit the support via email. On the 31 I send a mail explaining the problem. On the 8, I got a replying telling me to give them my SN number, which I reply back to them asap + telling them in the same reply all my potential fix so we don't lose time sending useless emails back and forth over the courses of multiple days...
He then replied by sending me 2 youtube videos to follow that might fix my problem. After watching them, I send an email back to tell them that I already tried all potential fixes from those videos, as I mentioned before.

And that was all just for the first problem, the screen flickering, but I forgot to mention that I can't launch 99% of the games and apps, either they just crash right away or I get a DXGI_ERROR_RESET

Also, it's a good time to mention that at that point I did plug my old pc back in to test it out whit the same screen to see if the screen wasn't the problem(it wasn't). Also, a good time to mention that receiving my packaged cost me 320$ in customs fees, you will see why I mention that here later.

He then tells me to test the pc whit another spare GPU, which I don't have, and if I bought a premade pc it's because I'm not really comfortable playing inside the hardware of a computer ...

At this point, when I reply that I can't test the pc whit another GPU He proposes a part swap. The problem is that if I accept to swap the broken parts, it will cost me an unidentified amount of money to send it back and then another 320$ to receive it (which I can't really afford atm as I mention to him) but no matter how much I insist on telling him: Do I have to pay again or IBP got this covered? he just ignored those emails...
And I'm not even sure ill receive a functioning part this time, if it happened once it could happen twice.

So now(finally) I want to know if anyone here has a fix that could save my life (and my dream). If not, ill either have to risk to accept the parts swap, pay the shipping, then probably 320$ when it will get to the customs and then 320$ to get it back.
Or I can refund it but I would lose my initial 320$ from when I got the package and then I will again lose money to send it and to make it past the customs.

I'm f***ed its whit tears in my eyes and bugs in my screen that I got to admit that I probably just got scammed and I can't do much about it, I saved money a whole year waiting for the good offer to show up, and when it did, it scew me over... HELLLLP.
Edit: A friendly reminder reminded me that I also got a couple of complete pc crashes for no apparent reason and 2 ''blue screen of death''
Edit2: update, Also one of my fan is broken

What was the first game you played on your shadow

Picture this:
It's been a long tedious day doing whatever you normally do. You open YouTube to watch some videos. Then, probably due to Muscle Memory, you open Gmail (or any other mail service you use) and the second in the long list of unread emails you see: "Your Shadow PC has been Activated".
You smile a little. This must be a prank, right? It's just April Fools but in December, right? Right? It's been 2 months since you subscribed to the damned service, but it's here now. Without wasting any more time, you open the Shadow App you had downloaded a month and 3 weeks ago. It wasn't a prank, your shadow has been activated. You fiddle with the settings like that one YouTuber who had bought Shadow 3 years ago had shown, then you press 'PLAY'.
After a few minutes or so, you are greeted by the Windows 10 login screen, Shadow as its username. A few seconds later, you're staring at Windows 10 desktop. Without further ado, you quickly open This PC and click on properties.
Ecstasy.
You've never seen that much RAM on your screen.
It's not RTX, but who cares, this time you won't blame lag for being terrible in CS:GO.
Intel actually have good processors? The way they made mine as shitty as possible, you'd think they are the cheapest company.
SSD, No disks in my drive anymore. But it's just 256GB, guess your wallet will have to open again.
You open Edge. You can use it but you hate Bing. All your homies hate Bing. Chrome is the next option. This time it has all the ram in the world. In 30 seconds Chrome is ready. Steam is next, then Epic, then GOG-Galaxy. From your Library, you ask yourself, "Which game should I download first?"
Me? Probably Elite: Dangerous.
Shadow isn't yet available in my country. It probably never will.
But A Man Can Dream, Can't He?

Apple M1 MacBook Air review from a dedicated PC user

Apple M1 MacBook Air review from a dedicated PC user
Updated 11/30/2020 for 8GB versus 16GB questions. See end of review for the updates.

Before I delve into the actual M1 MacBook Air review, just some background. I've worked in the PC industry from the early 80's. I remember the 1985 Apple vs Microsoft lawsuit related to the Apples significant anger over Windows. I could go into great detail on all the changes that have occurred since then, but outside supporting company Apple users on the network environments over the years, I'd largely continue my primary focus for the desktop realm on the PC. Besides a formal job as a network engineer for several world wide organizations, I had a strong hobbyist passion for photography and eventually videography.
Fortunately there's a very good non-linear video editing solution from BlackMagic called DaVinci Resolve. As BlackMagic is a hardware vendor of mid range to high range videography hardware, DaVinci Resolve was released with both a free version as well as the paid studio version. Purchase of their cameras would come with a studio activation key. With a significant number of production feature length films created by DaVinci Resolve along with sales of special control surfaces for the environment, it was beneficial to provide a free version to wet the appetite of the newly introduced video enthusiast. This resulted in my putting together a fairly powerful PC at the time to edit, what was astounding at the time, 1080P workflow. Regrettably I'd sized the VRAM in my graphics card less than I'd need to be able to use for a 4K workflow and beyond. With the purchase and use of a Panasonic Lumix GH5, V-LogL license and related gear, I'd frequently need to send my footage to friends with newer systems to process. Finally had enough to start looking at putting together a new workstation and the resulting costs. With kids still in high school and learning to drive, I didn't have a budget I'd prefer for a PC workstation that could extend to 6K if I use anamorphic lenses on the GH5 (couldn't afford both an expensive anamorphic lens and new workstation).
Fast forward to November 2020 and the release of the Apple M1 silicon. This arrived at the time that I had started my planning. Fortunately while researching DaVinci Resolve hardware requirements, I began to see a number of new M1 videos showing the use of DaVinci Resolve with a base model M1 Mac mini with 8GB of ram. It was working timelines including those with Red 8K Raw exports and other workflows that would result in out of GPU memory errors if I'd even attempted it on my own workstation. And for $699 USD? What magic is that and my skepticism was so high and I also had the hurdle of not being an Apple user.
Time to actually try it out however before I'd commit to the eventual budget damage of a higher-end PC workstation for 4K and 6K workflows without compromise. The Model of Apple M1 MacBook Air is the 8 core CPU/ 8 core GPU with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. Figured that to ensure best performance, without committing to a more expensive 16GB model, the one with the 8 core GPU was a good selection.
Packaging experience:
Most of the PC packaging may have pretty packaging, it also has a large amount of specifications and other details to impart to the perspective purchaser. Apple, expecting you to already know this detail from their presentations and likely the press releases of the new product, has a much more simplified packaging experience. Also seems that the iPhone packaging helped with the design decision as there is a simple elegance.

https://preview.redd.it/q19lj0szyt161.jpg?width=5184&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7b3baf400b5475c7fe8ffd58d488070caa1c917
Opening the packaging reveals the beautiful (Gold in this case) MacBook Air and associated accessories included, charging cable and charger.

https://preview.redd.it/np2dm2u5zt161.jpg?width=5184&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83cc0faea7398ead4d0b66c6a2397b48f20881ac
This minimalist packaging design struck me as I'm used to an almost overwhelming amount of detail and hype on PC laptop packaging. Also the internals is usually less eco friendly styrofoam that still looks very utilitarian. The 100% recyclables that are also elegant in their design is a refreshing packing experience.
Start up:
Oh my, simply lifting the lid started the setup experience and I was welcomed with the Macintosh sound I remember from 1985. Too cool! But more importantly, the process from start to completion was extremely easy and also extremely fast. On new Windows 10 workstations, there's this very long start up process for the first time that always seems to be longer than necessary, although future starts of the Windows 10 workstations are pretty quick with the use of SSD drives these days.
There's a rice or some other type of paper protection on the display, once you peel it off the True Tone display is like \"BAM\".
I've used a number of Lenovo and Dell laptops over the years. The keyboard on the new M1 MacBook Air is extremely comfortable to use and has surprisingly crisp and responsive keys. I was worried about the mushy experience you'd encounter on non-Apple products, but after using the keyboard for several days, I can clearly state that fear was unfounded with the M1 Air.
Now on to install my applications. I have cloud subscriptions to a number of products, from Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Cloud and more. Most of these applications at this time are not Native or "Universal" applications, meaning coded specifically for the Intel based Macs. While I knew that Rosetta 2 translation was available for the new "ARM" based architecture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture for those that like to dive into the details of the ARM architecture world), I was not expecting the performance I encountered. After all, while not a Mac user previously, I remember the frustration from those that moved from PowerPC based Macs to Intel Macs and the translation performance hit. Rosetta 2 apparently does the translation before you start using the application, this is why it'll bounce longer on startup, but once running will frequently run faster than the same application on an equivalent Intel based MacBook. That's pretty astounding, I'd never experienced a translation that wasn't at best hopefully only slightly slower than the prior environment.
On to some native application testing. BlackMagic released the beta DaVinci Resolve 17.1, be sure if you are also trying it to ensure it's the one specifically for the M1. The normal download page doesn't link to the M1 Apple Silicon version, you need to search for the latest beta release for the M1 from the support page instead.
I use the Studio edition, so here's the details during the install. What's really incredible to me is how self-contained the actual application is. On my PC, it would take significantly longer to install than the Mac and massive number of .dll and other filetypes would be installed. I'd tested installing benchmark apps and removing them to see that it's a single file drag to the trashcan. That's quite a difference for a PC user.

DaVinci Resolve 17.1 beta 2 for Apple Silicon
Performance in the primary reason I was testing out the M1 MacBook Air, a full 4K timeline with titles, music and color grading. On my older workstation I'd have to perform a 1080P timeline, even though the media used was 4K 10-Bit 4-2-2 HLG from my Panasonic GH5. With the 8G RAM, I was able to do the full 4K timeline with no reduction in quality. Not only that, no proxy (older system was 1/2 resolution proxy) nor optimized media and I was able to work with the 4K timeline with no stuttering. Unlike other videos I want to be clear that I was not editing in ProRes. I then color graded with the well known Leeming LUT for GH5 and HLG. Still totally smooth.
Next I wanted to process some images and put them into the video as well. Just to see if the memory efficiency was hype, I loaded Adobe Lightroom Classic at the same time! This application is still Intel x86 and Rosetta 2 installed it self prior to the application running. While the 4k Timeline was running without stutter I was able to apply a series of processing to the photo and even export it. Check it out!

DaVinci Resolve 17.1 M1 edition playing timeline (see red play) with multiple 4K 10-bit 4-2-2 HLG clips along with me editing a high resolution photo in Lightroom Classic
Oh my word!!! I cannot do this without stuttering individually on my PC workstation with an i7-6700, 32GB RAM and an Nvidia 1050 with 4GB VRAM. Let that resonate for a minute or two... A MacBook Air with only 8GB of memory does it with no hesitation with a memory amount that would prevent the related applications from both loading let alone work well on my PC if I didn't have 32GB of RAM.
In my testing, I completely lost my mind! For decades I'd been a staunch PC or nothing enthusiast and if this is the state of the Apple universe with the new Apple Silicon I'm now a strong convert.
One concern was left. A number of tech reviewers said that the MacBook Pro would be the better choice because of the fan and that there was a lot of concerns about the Air thermal throttling, especially based on the history of the Air series. As a non-Mac user, I'd not been aware of that concern and jumped into the completely silent Air. Apparently if you run Cinebench R23 and use a very long (throttle test), you can see that it does throttle somewhat. But interestingly the throttle is less than you'd expect and it seems that it's able to damp the thermals quick enough you start to see that the performance shouldn't drop too much further. In fact testing that was primarily GPU rather than CPU related didn't appear to trigger throttling in my experience. I certainly didn't experience it while working with DaVinci Resolve for several hours as I tried a number of the different functions as well as exploring Mac and PC version differences (not many, it's primarily Windows versus osX differences).
In summary, once DaVinci Resolve 17.1 moves out of beta, I'll be using this new Apple M1 MacBook Air as my primary workstation for 4K and higher editing workflows. I'm also excited to see the eventual "Universal" versions of my other applications and what additional performance I'll possibly see once those applications are native to the M1 rather than Rosetta 2 translated.
If you also happened to be a former PC user that was encouraged by the new M1 series of computers, I'd love to hear about your own experiences in the thread below.
As for those that have a problem deciding on the memory capacity and have the extra budget available, by all means purchase the 16GB versions of the M1 architecture. I'm sure that will help ensure even greater longevity for the platform. As for myself, I figure when the 8GB no longer meets my workflow needs, the next couple of M series processor revisions will have been released by then and I can get the next inexpensive model to upgrade to.
8GB ram testing and thoughts on capacity regarding DaVinci Resolve 17.1 beta for Apple Silicon.
Several have asked me since I originally posted this review my thoughts on 8GB vs 16GB versions of the Apple M1 MacBook Air. Here's some testing that I performed to see what may be an answer to that question. And the answer will also have the "it depends" viewpoint on it.
First off, I'd been using 4K 10-bit 4-2-2 HLG clips that I color grade with the Leeming LUT for Panasonic GH5 HLG (seems to have less noise to me than the V-Log L, but that's a conversation for a different thread). In addition, I have Titles and Fusion features throughout. What's interesting is that during my testing, I don't have any slow downs in the timeline playback or when moving around the Cut work page. I did open the Activity Monitor to see what's happening and as you can see, DaVinci Resolve is using more memory than the laptop has installed physically. The M1 system is able to very quickly and deftly handle this so that I don't actually notice any performance degradation. Also memory pressure during this process is good in the "green" so to speak. However, this may be an area that for those that do much more professional projects than I with longer timelines may want to look at the 16GB model. I personally believe the 8GB can handle it fine, but the question is with swap writes to the built-in SSD frequently, how soon could one reach the drives TBW (terabytes written) rating? Once you reach that, eventually the drive will fail as TLC (likely if it's Western Digital SSD chips as shown in the iFixit Teardown of both an M1 MacBook Air and an M1 MacBook Pro) and other NAND based SSD technologies can only write to a cell a set number of times before it fails (although current tech is 3000 times or more per cell). SSD makers allow for additional "reserve" cells that are than mapped in to replace failed cells. TBW rating also goes up as the storage space increases, specifically because there's even greater number of reserve cells available. This could be the argument to purchase a 16GB model if you frequently will be doing video editing and have a possible concern about longevity. That said, swap space has been happening on Mac and PC systems with SSD for some time and not too much has been said about related failures. A 16GB would certainly page less as the ~10MB utilization of DR with this much going on would fit entirely in the physical RAM.
Activity Monitor with DaVinci Resolve using color grading and fusion
Besides my own testing, there's a brand new Youtube from "Learn Color Grading" from Filmsimplified.com that tests DR 17.1 with content all the way up to 12K in a 4K timeline using BlackMagics highest resolution camera. Spoilers - it works on both https://youtu.be/TrlpuvHg_Ig
So in summary for the 8GB versus 16GB question? I believe for many content creators, a MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM will be enough for most of your normal VLOG activities and an amazingly low price. However if one is wanting to ensure the longevity for their purchase, then 16GB will help ensure less swap activities to the SSD drive. Also 16GB should be selected if using DaVinci Resolve 17.1 beta for very large projects. The conclusion here would be, if you can afford the additional $200 and willing to wait for the product to be shipped to you, get the 16GB editions of either version. For everyone else, getting the 8GB will save you $200 that you can use for must need accessories or AppleCare+.
Finally, I had mentioned some bench marks. There are a number of reviews that already show this, but I ran multiple times and captured images of the results. The ones I post below are not technically "average" but the result that I would see the most frequently when I'd run it multiple times and compare (may be less than others and if so that's a measurement of the heat impact for me).
Both scores and the version of Geekbench

Single-Core comparison

Multi-Core Comparison
Overall, the 8GB M1 MacBook Air is doing very well for me. I feel comfortable from a Adobe Creative Cloud (Photography edition) and DaVinci Resolve 17.1 beta user with a standard 4K timeline not worried about SSD longevity recommending an 8GB edition. For all others that worry about SSD longevity or must squeeze every bit of performance out of a native M1 NLE video editor, get the 16GB.

How to Start a YouTube Channel: Definitive Guide

How to Start a YouTube Channel: Definitive Guide
We bet almost everyone thought about creating their YouTube channel at least once in a lifetime. Especially entrepreneurs, businesses and aspiring bloggers are concerned about it quite a lot.
How to launch a YouTube channel right and avoid common pitfalls we’ll reveal in this peace. Naturally, launching a YouTube channel is just a starting point. To make your channel thrive, you need to optimise it, track the performance, promote it and make it grow.

https://preview.redd.it/ilm7r6f8j6061.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56f437c1dfbb3a52d9fd890fdccef64f5afbc3b3

Launching a YouTube channel: perks

Marketers and businesses use videos and YouTube as a way to reach their audiences and increase brand awareness. Bloggers entertain, sometimes educate their followers and make a living out of it.
All in all, launching a YouTube channel has quite a lot of advantages, here are some to name:
  • Quick start. Creating a YouTube channel won’t take longer than 10 minutes of your time.
  • It’s free. But you will need some equipment to shoot and edit videos.
  • Videos are easy to digest. People are subject to consuming video content a lot easier than reading.
Tip: Use 4K Video Downloader to download video content of any kind to your PC.
  • Many niches aren’t taken. Yes, YouTube has a rather high competition level, but there are definitely niches that you still can take. And quality content is at even lesser supply.

Launching a YouTube channel: a step-by-step guide

  1. YouTube account registration.
First of all, you need to create a YouTube account. Head over to YouTube.com and click on the Sign In button at the top right corner of the screen.

https://preview.redd.it/uh488w3aj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=13ad0410b9c202763a0d2d6d07fd91852403e1e5
Then click ‘Create account’.

https://preview.redd.it/6boxzwdbj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=0d5d1f7bb6d1695380cba8eb6a3e4940a2262186
You can use any email address, not necessarily Google’s. So if you don’t have a Google account yet, you won't be asked to create one. Use your real phone number or the one you have access to any time: you might be asked to send confirmation codes. Thus you’ll be sure no one will break into your account and your channel.
Agree with the terms of use and privacy, and then press ‘Next’ to proceed.
  1. Creation of a YouTube channel.
To launch your first YouTube channel, go to the main page of the YouTube site and find ‘Create a channel’ button under your profile icon. Click on it.

https://preview.redd.it/qbt2t3edj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce472d66442301c56d810831e7c39a47522ed4f2
You will be asked to create a channel, enter your name and upload a profile picture from your Google account or select a custom name. Pick what you wish by pressing ‘Select’.

https://preview.redd.it/7el5axgfj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9b060bd10f0e73b434a7d5b433daeb60d579b17
Then enter your channel’s name, upload a profile picture, type a channel description and add links to your social media if you have any. Press ‘Save and Continue’ to proceed.

https://preview.redd.it/pt13g45hj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=d888eddf283b2dcc3a01e75ed47f4670e4dc255c
If you struggle with creating a channel’s name, here are some hacks for you to help:
  • Choose your own name if you want the channel to be your blog or diary. You can also use your nickname from any of your social media or pick a name your friends or family call you. Just keep in mind that the name of the channel should be clear and easy to remember.
  • If you’re starting a brand or a company channel, name it as your brand.
  • Use keywords related to your niche—for example, makeup, science, history, tutorials, hacks, and so on. Thus you will help other users discover you.
Congratulations! Your channel is now created. Now you need to customise it.
If you want to change your channel pfp (profile picture), you can do it anytime you want just by hovering the cursor over the pfp icon, pressing the camera icon and uploading an image from your device.
YouTube has a customisation studio where you can update and change the look of your channel whatever you want. To do so, find the ‘Customize channel’ button. You will be redirected to the Studio.

https://preview.redd.it/t64vgnkjj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=7683a33d5e5b76628ee667d14b67e866ca64a633
There you can add a banner image that will be placed across the top of your channel like this:

https://preview.redd.it/bavnh8rkj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=9af696cb555d4cff9f73b83e44af120fca873a84
Or change your profile picture, add a watermark that will appear in each of your videos, change your channel layout, edit description, links, and contact info.
In the Studio, you’re able to add subtitles , choose tracks from the audio library, track channel analytics and, most importantly, apply for the monetisation program offered by YouTube.

https://preview.redd.it/u5n8kbxpj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=0c5ee5b03961b95e2cae28d60d801762913608ea
  1. First video upload.
Channel is nothing without content, so you will have to create videos and regularly upload them to your channel. Here’s how to add your first one.
You can do so right from the main page of the channel by pressing on the ‘Upload video’ in the middle of the page.

https://preview.redd.it/bixtdobvj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b045a449f0d395260983b8af7f98e358c0e3d32
Then choose a file from your computer and add information about it - title, description, thumbnail, click if the video can be watched by kids, add tags, set up automatic subtitles, recording date and video location, choose category, manage comments and choose who can find your videos (all users, nobody or people you give the link to).

https://preview.redd.it/66p4nmewj6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee0a2d6285f9c289628898c0b5145f5385d9d6dc
You can also schedule the video to go live when you want or set it as an Instant Premier so that all your viewers can watch it all together at the same time and communicate with each other in the chat.
Once you’ve set up all the necessary settings, press ‘Save’. Congrats! Your first video is now uploaded to the channel.

How to make a Youtube channel private

If you want to limit the access to your videos, you can make your channel private or available to only those who have the special link.
This will be useful for entrepreneurs who want to open videos to only those clients who paid for this, bought an online class and so on.
So, you can restrict the access to some videos the following way:
  1. Open the main page of your channel and press ‘Manage videos’.
  2. Find the ‘Upload’ tab and pick the videos you want to make private. Find the ‘Edit’ button, choose the ‘Visibility’ tab and tap on it. There you can choose to make the video private, public (visible to everyone) or unlisted (available to those with the link).

https://preview.redd.it/pxqzhqg7k6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=be5ad71fc353f2a5014fbe76085b0b0b594b7bdf

https://preview.redd.it/zu37xw9ak6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=e80dc0f26811ccd5faa4c741c73410636648de54
Another way to do so is to click on the word ‘Private’, ‘Unlisted’ or ‘Public’ next to the video, click on it and choose from the option from the list.

https://preview.redd.it/ksohuq6bk6061.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f5fa6366a98da5f4c3d3183530c7aeb10b63855
Apply the same to all videos you want to hide from the public.

The ultimate home video surveillance config on the cheap.

I built a CCTV network that is comprised of 15 4k cameras, all recording 24x7. Over 20,000 still images per day are analyzed for humans or vehicles via artificial intelligence. When detected, I get a push notification with a snapshot of the object of interest and the camera starts recording at full-resolution for a while. If you're on my property, you're now being recorded by between two and five cameras at a time. All in, this project cost me about $2,600 with no monthly fees.
I've spent the past month putting this system together. I want to document it somewhere and /homedefense seems like a good fit.

Background

I live in a semi-rural area on about three acres of land surrounded by woods. My house is fairly large, plus I have an outbuilding that functions as my home office and workshop. Being so isolated and unable to keep an eye on the entire property, I've longed been concerned about being a target.
Last year we got symmetrical gigabit fiber to the home in my area. In preparation for it, I built out a robust home network. I have a 48-port PoE Ubiquiti switch in a full rack in my basement. In my outbuilding, I also have a 16-port PoE Ubiquiti switch in a small wall rack. They're interconnected via two runs of direct-burial, multimode fiber I buried 4' deep in 3/4" PVC conduit. Between the house and outbuilding, I have eight Unfi wifi access points installed. In my main rack I also have a Synology NAS, Intel NUC that's a Docker host, and a Ubiquiti Security Gateway Pro.
On my Intel NUC, I run about a dozen Docker containers. Most notably is: Home Assistant, Mosquito MQTT broker, Grafana, InfluxDB, and Plex.

The Config

Firstly, DarkBunnySC has an excellent video that was my jumping off point. I recommend that you watch his video first before reading the rest of this post, since it will help with context.

Cameras

I am using fifteen of these Annke 4k turrent IP cameras. The top-rated review is super helpful. These are rebranded Hikvision DS-2CD2383G0-I cameras for half the cost. The initial config is a bit tedious though:
  1. Connect my notebook to my security camera VLAN.
  2. Plug the camera into the switch and it powers on via PoE.
  3. "Activate" the camera with SADPTool.exe (a Annke tool that uses some sort of layer-3 protocol to discover the camera and set it's initial password, which is why my PC and the camera has to be on same layer-2 network (VLAN) for the initial setup.).
  4. Note the IP address listed in SADPTool and login with "admin" and the password via the web interface.
  5. Upload the new Hikvision firmware
  6. When it reboots, the camera has a static IP of 192.168.1.64. So I have to manually set my PC to 192.168.1.63 (or whatever) and log back in to the camera and change it to DHCP. It reboots again.
  7. Tweak the video feed settings.
The picture quality is absolutely amazing. They'll push 4k video at 15 fps on the main stream. Excellent resolution and (more importantly) dynamic range. The night-vision IR emitter is also really good.
Using the full resolution, quality and framerate on the main stream and similar settings on the 640x480 substream, results in a sustained rate of about 19 mb/s. This is why wired cameras are way better than wi-fi based ones. I mean, the camera needs a wire for power anyway, right? Why not just use one wire for both data and power?

Misc tips:

Positioning:

Software

NVR (BlueIris)

I really wanted to stick with open source software on this project. Not because of cost but because of flexibility. I tried both Shinobi and ZoneMinder and, unfortunately, neither of them hold a candle to BlueIris. BlueIris just works and works well.
Another issue: I couldn't easily containerize BlueIris and run it under Docker on my Intel NUC. So I ended up buying another NUC (#NUC8v7PNK) with the fastest processor I could find. I then put 32 GB of RAM in it and Windows Server 2019 on a 1TB SSD and installed BlueIris. With 15 cameras and direct-to-disk recording, my CPU utilization is typically 20-30%. Not bad considering it's constantly downloading 260 mb/s worth of video feeds.
DarkBunnySC goes into a lot of detail on how to configure Blue Iris in the above-mentioned video so I won't be redundant. I'm using the same config: record all substreams 24x7 and have them trigger motion alerts, record full-resolution video on manual triggers from the artificial intelligence application.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Object Classification

The problem is that getting notified every time there's movement on a camera would be rage-inducing. So I need a way to filter out leaves blowing, rain, etc. and only alert me when an actual person or vehicle is detected.
DarkBunnySC got this working using two pieces of software:
  1. DeepStack -- This the system that does the actual analysis of the images. It's completely self-contained (no cloud component), open source, free, and super simple to use. Using a RESTful API, it takes an input of a JPEG and outputs a list of objects it sees in the image. I run this in a Docker container on my original NUC. It takes about 350 ms to analyze a 4k resolution image in "HIGH" mode.
  2. AI bridge -- A tiny Windows-based application that functions as "glue" between BlueIris and DeepStack. BlueIris is configured to create a bunch of still images from video when motion is detected, this application grabs these stills and feeds them into DeepStack, and processes the results. Simple in theory, but was pretty terrible for me.

Where things start to diverge...

The problem with DarkBunnySC's solution in my situation became apparent on very windy days we've had recently. This caused a lot of motion events to occur constantly. This absolutely smoked my BlueIris server because it couldn't keep up with extracting multiple JPEGs per second from 15 4k video feeds.
So I configured BlueIris to stop creating JPEGs on motion events and set it to publish to a MQTT topic instead. And then I wrote a Python application to listen for MQTT events and grab still images directly from each camera. Problem solved. I've also expanded my Python app to include additional functionality not available in the AI bridge tool:
  1. Save image data offsite in Amazon S3 for archival purposes and/or someone destroys my home gear.
  2. On each motion event grab five still images, a half a second apart, analyze each for a person or vehicle. Send a push notification to my phone (via Pushover) containing the best matching image.
  3. I'm performing the object recognition on the full 4k resolution images, rather than the 640x480 snapshots BlueIris was creating from the low resolution camera substream. I should be able to correctly identify objects much further away from the camera.
  4. Grab events off the MQTT wire and log them in InfluxDB. Use Grafana to browse real-time and historical charts of what objects are detected on what cameras and when, the confidence levels of various detected objects, etc.
  5. I'm beginning to experiment with the facial recognition part of Deep Stack. The goal would be to ignore alerts when recognized faces are found, automatically unlock my smart door locks, etc.

The Definitive Quest Piracy Guide

The Definitive Quest Piracy Guide
(THIS IS A PCVR AND QUEST PIRACY GUIDE)
So you wanna sail the seven seas of virtual reality?

Last Edited: 15/01/2021

In my continued attempts to quiet the spam of people begging for the quest game links, I've written up a guide towards obtaining it yourself instead of spamming threads asking for it on this subreddit.
^ I think i've accomplished this mission now :]
This guide shows you how to download and sideload pirated games on the Oculus Quest 1/Q2 as well as the best place to find pirated games for PCVR headsets or Quests connected through Oculus Link or any other wireless streaming solution.
Just to reiterate and stress this, DO NOT PUBLICLY POST LINKS TO PIRACY DOWNLOADS. BY DOING THIS YOU ARE RISKING THE SUBREDDIT AND ENTIRE PIRACY MIRRORS TO BE DELETED. I'm thankfully able to circumvent these rules by not providing *direct* links to downloads, but just pointing people to where they can access these downloads by themselves :)
I am not affiliated with any of the hosts of these links. Just someone in the community who knows the ins and outs trying to point noobies in the right direction and to (hopefully) slow down the subreddit becoming nothing but a cesspit of people asking the same question over and over. This also means don't come to me for help, I don't run any of this stuff. Either leave your problem in the comments for help or ask the Discord.
AND I DO NOT ANSWER DIRECT MESSAGES
QUEST 2 USERS: Not all Quest 1 games currently work with the Quest 2, please take a look at this spreadsheet before installing any games.
if you're here looking for a cracked version of Virtual Desktop, there isn't one. VD is uncrackable as far as I know. If you want a PCVR streamer for Quest, here is a free alternative.

WILL I BE BANNED FOR PIRATING GAMES?
As it stands right now, you won't be banned for pirating games. As of right now, Facebook has never issued any form of punishment to anyone for piracy.
If you feel weary when it comes to pirating games, you can take some precautions just to be safe.
"LVL 0: Do nothing, play cracked games online and offline
LVL 1: Play cracked games only when your wifi is turned off (still not safer since oculus sends logs)
LVL 2: Spoof games as random packagenames and only play with wifi off (safer, but still not 100% safe)
LVL 3: Play with wifi on but block all oculus and facebook domains through pihole or your router (even safer, still SOME game developers will see your ip trying to connect to their servers, using a fake dns does work)
LVL 4: Block quest external access to internet from your routepihole (only allowing stuff vd and file transfer between devices on LAN)"
- Zale Anderson, VRP Discord

PLEASE READ THIS GUIDE CAREFULLY TO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES
Also, if you're manually sideloading, DON'T USE SIDEQUEST. THEY HAVE AN APK BLACKLIST AND WILL NOT LET YOU SIDELOAD PIRATED GAMES. YOU CAN USE AN OLDER VERSION OF SIDEQUEST TO SIDELOAD BLACKLISTED APKS THAT CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH RCLONE BROWSER, WHICH IS MENTIONED LATER IN THIS GUIDE

YOU WILL NEED:
Oculus ADB Drivers
An Oculus developer account with the Quest in developer mode (Tutorial)
EDIT: I've heard about recently that you now need a Credit Card to get a developer account for verification purposes. I don't know any way around this so I apologise if you can't make a developer account for this.
A Telegram Account (requires phone number, if you don't have one that's on you)
EDIT: you can use various websites that provide free phone numbers online, namely TextNow (US only but VPNs work) and FreePhoneNum. thanks to u/FlowV4 on this post for reminding me that these apps existed lol

Any device capable of sideloading to an Oculus Quest/Quest 2 (this guide will be directed to Windows 10 users as that's the main use case here, if you use something else then I think there are downloads on the Telegram for other operating systems. Keep reading to know how to get to the Telegram)
A USB Type C cable routing from your PC to the quest (to sideload games to the headset)
A Discord Account (NOT A BRAND NEW ACCOUNT: using a new account will get you instantly banned from the VRP Discord. This is a measure to prevent raiding/bots. I do not know how old your account has to be to join and I apologise for being unable to figure it out. I'd give it 14-30 days maybe.)

Step 1: Join the VRP Discord server. The invite link is a PINNED POST on this subreddit. When in the Discord server, head over to the #rules channel, read the rules and react to the bottom message to gain access to the rest of the server
you may use the #vrp-updates channel in the server to be notified when new games are added or games are updated on the download mirrors.
Step 2: Go to the #faq channel, scroll to the top and JOIN THE TELEGRAM (Telegram link is underneath " How to sideload with AndroidSideloader: " section. You'll have to download the Telegram application on your PC and make an account to get into the VRP Telegram.
Step 3: If you needed to download Telegram, revisit the Telegram link in the VRP Discord and using your account you just made/logged into, join the VRP Telegram chat. At the top of the Telegram interface you should be able to access the pinned message.

So at this point there are multiple methods here for quest piracy. I'm going to go through them here.

ROOKIE'S SIDELOADER VRP EDITION (AUTOMATIC SIDELOADING, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR NOOBIES)
On the Telegram's pinned message is an exe file for the Rookie's Sideloader VRP Edition installer. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING THIS TO PIRATE GAMES. It's a simple application that when downloaded and installed (IF WINDOWS/YOUR BROWSER SAYS IT'S A VIRUS, THIS IS A FALSE POSITIVE AND MEANS YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR VIRUS DATABASES TO STOP IT FROM APPEARING OR JUST ADD IT TO YOUR EXCEPTIONS.) and when launched, you can connect your quest to your PC, Select from a huge drop down menu of games and easily, with a couple of clicks, automagically download and sideload games to your quest.
If you get Rookie's Sideloader VRP and are prompted with an update on launch, accept the update and it'll be downloaded and launched on your PC. Games on the list are automatically added and updated at the rate they're cracked by the pirates.

RCLONE BROWSER (MANUAL SIDELOADING, RECOMMENDED IF USING ANY OTHER SIDELOADING METHOD, ALSO FOR PCVGEARVR GAMES)
On the pinned messages list, find the rclone browser part and click the link corresponding to the operating system you're on and (for Windows) you'll be redirected to a message containing a RAR file. Download that file, extract it and run RcloneBrowser.exe. You'll then be presented with 2 or 3 VRP mirrors, double click one of them and you'll be able to access and download APKs and OBBs under the Quest Games folder for manual sideloading, if thats your thing.
If the UI for rclone browser is confusing to you, refer to this short tutorial video. (when the game you chose is showing as running, wait until it says finished before sideloading)
WHITE WHIDOW SIDELOADER - NEWER, PRE-ALPHA ALTERNATIVE TO ROOKIE'S FOR MAC, LINUX AND WINDOWS
all info regarding WWS can be found here. includes download and installation guide
EXTRA, LIKELY NECESSARY INFORMATION
To manually sideload, use sidequest or rookies sideloader to access the quests file system and drag the "com.xxx.xxx" folder to the directory Android/obb then sideload the apk using the sideloading method of your choice.
Not all games need obb files so they won't come with them.
To access sideloaded applications, go to your Quest's library screen, on the top right select the drop down menu that says "All", scroll down and select Unknown Sources. From there you can access your sideloaded games and apps

UPDATING QUEST GAMES
To update your pirated Quest games, while keeping the current version of the game installed, download and sideload the new version of the game using your preferred method and your save data should stay intact with the new update installed
OTHER
rclone browser also provides downloads for other tools and options regarding your Quest and games. This includes:
App launchers spoofed as legit apps that can be launched from your regular library screen, eliminating the need to go to unknown sources
Method(s) to disable Telemetry tracking
Alternate sideloading methods such as older versions of sidequest that allow blacklisted apks, total commander for local sideloading and rookies sideloader vrp edition.
All the old Quest firmware versions and methods to downgrade
Previous versions of games
DLC for games
Modded/maxed out save files for games
GEARVR AND PC TETHERED VR
Rclone browser also provides downloads for GearVR and PCVR games.
The GearVR games should sideload fine onto a Quest but there is no guarantee that they will fully function. However I don't know how to play GearVR games on a PC using a PCVR headset
THE PCVR GAMES ARE TO BE DOWNLOADED AND PLAYED ON A PC WITH A PCVR TETHERED HEADSET OR A QUEST CONNECTED TO A PC WITH OCULUS LINK/VIRTUAL DESKTOP/ALVR.
YOU CANNOT SIDELOAD PCVR GAMES ONTO A QUEST 1 OR 2 AND PLAY THEM STANDALONE.
To play pirated PCVR games, download one using any of the rclone mirrors. Some may be packaged into repacked installers to make downloads smaller, so follow any instructions that are (hopefully) provided alongside the repack files.
PLAYING WITH STEAMVR
In my experience, the easiest way to run these games is through SteamVR, being only a Quest owner i've found running games through the Oculus PC app with Link very unreliable due to their software just being a MASSIVE processing power hog so only use Oculus Link if you have no other way or you think your PC is beefy enough for it. More on this a little bit down the line.
So, if you're on an Oculus headset (Quest with Link^, Rift) enable unknown sources in the settings for the Oculus PC software so you can run SteamVR.
Find the executable (.exe) for the game you've just downloaded and installed/extracted (you may have to look around in the game directory depending on what game) and add it as a Non-Steam game shortcut within Steam.
Then go to properties for the shortcut you have just created within Steam and enable "Include in VR Library"
Then when running SteamVR on launch you'll be presented with your VR library where your shortcuts should appear and you can just launch the games from there and enjoy.
^If you do Quest PCVR exclusively on Virtual Desktop, you do not need the Oculus software at all (correct me if i'm wrong)

POSSIBLE SETUP IMPROVEMENTS (IN MY EXPERIENCE)
Here i'm just gonna dump a few things that have enhanced my PCVR experience on a Quest over time in hopes that it'll help out others.
I play games on a budget ass rig (i5-4590s, 8gb ram, gtx 1650) so running the Oculus app and playing with Oculus Link is a MASSIVE MASSIVE hit on performance in games.
So if you're able to, use Virtual Desktop instead of Oculus Link as long as you've got a nice connection (preferrably ethernet) and at the cost of a bit of pixelation in display or some higher latency, you will run games WAAAY smoother. I am incredibly below spec for Half-Life: Alyx but by running it with Virtual Desktop and not the Oculus app bloating up my CPU power it sat at more than playable fps (50-72fps) for me at all times on low fidelity.
Along with that, close anything else you have running in the background like any web browser or Discord.
Sure VD is $25/£20, but its worth it not only for the experience improvements but for supporting the developer because this guy is doing a better job than Facebook when it comes to this stuff.

This post will be updated for general improvements (i suck at writing guides) and if any changes come along to the process.
I hope this helps those who want to try before they buy or the many clueless people who just want free games on their shiny new VR headsets.
But remember, please support developers and their work by buying their games on legit marketplaces, maybe wait for a sale or something and buy their games if you enjoy them. They absolutely slave away to bring us these incredible experiences and we are responsible for making sure they can afford a tin of sardines to ration for the week and maybe buy more models off the asset store for their next game
I know this is coming from the redditor who just taught you how to pirate every single VR game but i still like to support developers by buying their games if i enjoy them and it goes way further than you think when you buy a game.
Except for Bethesda and Rockstar, please pirate their games to your hearts content as they are shitty companies releasing low effort VR ports for a quick buck from the small but growing amount of VR enthusiasts and gamers.

Thanks for reading and enjoy!

Just became A+ certified - no IT experience.

Edit: "Misleading title" - Yeah you got me. Should be "No IT Job experience". I'm family IT guy and have built 2 computers in the past. But besides knowing a bit of hardware and basic software troubleshooting, can't say there was much else.
Passed Core 1 in September, passed Core 2 this month. No IT job before this. Working 12 hour shifts at my job. Used Sybex Deluxe A+ study guide textbook ($40 off Amazon, my best resource check it out), Messer's videos, Dion's test courses (Got it when it was ~$20).
I don't have much time so I will be concise.
Don't worry. You got this. I also see on these posts that not many go into their study habits/techniques and a lot of people ask how to study. I'd like to share to help.
First, be disciplined and passionate. You need to want it and put the effort/time to learn. Being "lazy" will not help. With the discipline to do what you need to do, you will gain the freedom to succeed and to be free of it. DISCIPLINE EQUALS FREEDOM. Good luck.

These two links will sum it all up. Highly recommend. USE AS MANY RESOURCES AS POSSIBLE TO GIVE YOU AN EDGE.

Study Techniques/Habits:
That's all I can think of for now. I'm starting on Net+ now. Best of luck to everyone. I will update/respond when I can.
Edit 2: Polskiemafia brought up a noteworthy point regarding testing:
I'd also suggest seeking out some practice exams (Meyers, Messer, or Dion) to drill on. Those practice exams (in particular Dion) always seem to structure questions the same as CompTIA, and that's a big help. CompTIA likes to throw curve balls in the way they ask questions, so seeing those a few times before you sit for the actual exam can be helpful. Main thing with CompTIA is to read the question, read it again, and read it again before answering.

Matebook 14" 16GB + 512 GB SSD 2 weeks usage my experiences.

Hello, recently i bought Matebook 14. Thought it would be helpful for those looking to buy this device. My usage scenario is: I'm the guy who uses dark mode almost everything. And i turn low blue light all time.. except tv shows, movies etc. Also i use display around %0-30 brightness. %95 of time i use my laptop at my study desk, reading pdfs, working on programming languages, toying with linux terminal producing errors, trying to fix them etc. Usual stuff.
Keyboard has nice typing experience, i used apple keyboard at local store to test. I find them nearly same. But it has unique quality, so i cant compare it with macbook air. Both has different typing experiences both are good. It has satisfying 2 levels of backlight(white). There was nothing to complain about. The light turns off after 15 seconds. But this can be changed in PC Manager App which comes pre-installed with the laptop.(5-10-15 secs; 1,5 min.;or never). Also the keyboard has priority to function F keys. Which means you can only use F keys when u turn on Fn key(the light turns on when its on; just like caps lock) . But than again, this can be changed in the PC Manager App. You can do vice versa.
Touchpad is wide and comfortable to use. Sometimes i switch BT Mouse(huawei's) but quickly i turn back to touchpad. Its even better than seperate mouse.(According to my experiences)
Display has very nice contrast ratio. For dark mode it satisfies me well enough. The screen flickering and stuttering is not problem for me. Colors and contrast reminds me my samsung tab s5e tablet(oled display without official HDR support) It comes with Monitor Management app which reduces blue light. Its a bit better then native windows night mode (its more reddish). I have to mention thoug its screen resolution is 2160x1440 windows re-scales with %150. It may seem a bit unnecesaary to use at this res. But texts, images becomes sharper comparing to my 1080p Asus VG249Q 24" monitor. So yeah i think its better that way. Also i had concerns about backlight bleeding. But after i have watched 1080p videos at youtube with thick blackbars, i barely noticed or never noticed at all. The bleeding increases as the brightness increases. At full blacks it bleeds horribly at max brightness. But even if you watch some movies with black bars. You won't notice them below %50 brightness. I barely noticed at full brightness. And it didn't bothered me at all.
Sound is very good but not great. I am very sensitive about music quality. After windows update it installed nahimic itself. Its okay to have. But i don't think you would miss it. I can compare it with Samsung tab s5e. Which i would rate:Samsung tab s5e: 9.7/10Matebook 14: 7.5/10Matebook sounds very loud, rich sounds but i don't find it better or similar with my tablet.
Gaming I have tested only with 2 games, active cooler was beneath the laptop since my cooler was not blowing that strong. So, I have used it. But be careful though, if the cooler blows intense, it may interfere with laptop's own fans which are positioned bottom of the laptop. I used MSI afterburner,Riva statics to see temperature and performance.Starcraft(non remastered version) to represent wooden pc games. Laptop get a bit warm thats all 40-42 Celsius.Diablo III: If video quality increases the heat goes up. I run Diablo III at 1080p with max settings fps was around 27-32. temp was around 68-70.At more than 1080p ,with same settings, 22 fps. temp was around 78-80.At 720p, all low settings, 38-45 fps. Temp was around 52-53. Which i played like 3-5 hours with same temp. But fps dropped to 34-36 and stayed around same. The numbers may be a bit different because of my corrupted sectors at my RAM (brain).
Battery is very good. For 2160x1660 res it has a lot of juice to run through day.Today I have used my laptop for more than 6 hours, at that time i have watched youtube videos(%25), Browsing net(%65), printed some papers(%5), downloaded some programs(%5). Especially if i download something, the laptop becomes +4 Celsius hotter. And battery icon tells me half of time usually it will last while downloading stuff at 3.3Mb/per sec. Downloading drains more battery then watching youtube videos in my scenario. Watching youtube increases temp +1-2 Celsius. Also when i attach the laptop my 1080p Monitor(Asus VG1249Q) battery icon tells me battery will last longer than usual(about %20 longer). Probably resolution factor. I just realised charging battery araound 20-70 seems a better idea for battery life. I do charge between 30-70. Every 6 weeks or so i will completely drain battery and charge it to 100. There's an option in PC Manager app to do that.
Overall Temps are okay. Today i have used laptop for 6-6.5 hours and probably it will last 1.5 hour more until fully drained. From the morning its temp was same 32-34 and right now its 36-37. Its not uncomfortable but not comfortable either. Btw i live in a room at 16-19 Celsius. To overcome that problem i opened radeon software and choosed custom from the GPU sub menu and clicked radeon chill and choosed 60 fps for min and max-i know its not related for daily use but i have superstitions :)- the heat dropped like 4-5 Celsius but at costs of less battery run time. So its your choice.
Material is top notch. The matte aluminium like(not sure about its component) material used exterior part, its helps a lot when distributing heat. Also exterior cools quickly. The fingerprint reader reacts well enough. The keyboard light is good to have.
Another edit: An audio app called nahimic seems to causing some battery drain and HIGH CPU usage problem. I have uninstalled it now the temps are ok. Also battery is better. Temps are: Around 55 for DOTA 2, 50 for fallout 3. İt seems decent. (Winter here.. And Room temps about 18)
Couple of edits: PC Manager App, keyboard. Gaming.

Why I replaced the iPad Pro with the Galaxy Tab S7+

Disclaimer: I'm still testing out the Galaxy Tab S7+ so I can't fully say that I've made the correct decision until I spend much more time drawing on this tablet. I'll probably write an update.
The reason why I decided to post this here is because I've wanted to find people who had similar experiences to me, but most seem to direct everyone to the iPad Pro if you plan to do any illustrations. Don't get me wrong, I love Procreate, but I don't like that iPads are the only option for consumers. I wrote all this on a fairly small Youtube video (on my phone so please ignore any errors) and figured it might be helpful here. People don't really explain the differences in too much detail, so I hope this helps someone.

I just received the Galaxy Tab S7+ but it's not my first Android tablet as my last one was the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. For the past few years I've been using the IPad Pro. My primary use for tablets is for drawing, both as a hobby and for commissions. IPads are still always recommended for artists as there are a plethora of creative apps and generally run well without many hiccups in comparison to Android. Apps are made for the iPads in mind as iPhone will have a different version to purchase, while on Android it's at times blown up mobile apps displayed on tablets.
However, there were many things about the IPad Pro that made me want to stop using it. The file explorer is absolutely abysmal. We've only just recently been allowed to create our own folders but it's still very limited. People also fail to mention that there's no progress bar for when you're downloading or copying to the iPad. There's been times where the transfer has frozen and I couldn't tell. In addition to this, the IPad has had trouble recognising my external harddrive so backing up can be a pain. I don't want to rely on cloud storage and I can't exactly just connect the IPad Pro to my Windows PC and drag files onto the device. I also found some bizarre downgrades when changing from iPad Pro 10.5 to IPad Pro 11 (1st Gen) such as split keyboard being removed entirely. I only realised when checking the small print on Apple's website that they've removed split keyboard with the newer models. This makes typing on the IPad much more difficult. I also found that a few games didn't scale to the 11" size and added huge borders. I was surprised that not all apps had been optimised for the 11" size as we're now on the second gen. I almost forgot to mention that the power button has been replaced with a Siri button on newer Pro models. You have to hold down the Siri button and the volume button to turn it off. Samsung has done something similar but you are able to change this back to functioning as a power off button or you can reassign it to other apps of your choice. There's no other options for the iPad.
What finally made me decide to try going back to Android is that the S pen's latency finally matches the Apple Pencil and that Clip Studio Paint has been ported over. Krita has also been ported to Android and is known as another powerful illustration software. I prefer working with more open source software and usually there are open source apps to compliment the work flow between PC and Android. Having access to sideloading APKs is a big deal for me and something I missed when using IPad OS. The option of customisation is a big reason why I wanted t change as I've returned to using SwiftKey on the Galaxy Tab S7+. I did try it on the IPad Pro, but unless Apple gives the devs rights, it's less feature rich as the default keyboard. Moreover, I prefer the soft rubber nib on the S pen over the plastic pen tip of the Apple Pencil. Most off set this problem by using a textured screen protector, but you can't quite overcome the fact that it's plastic tapping on glass. Due the Wacom technology in Samsung tablets, there are also other side benefits such as not needing to charge the pen to use it for drawing and being able to use other styluses (such as STAEDTLER Noris digital and Lamy AL-Star EMR Digital Pen) instead of the S pen. I'm also not too worried about updates as I'm sure the XDA Community will continue to develop roms to further the life expectancy of this tablet.
I think the iPad Pro can be a great option as there are great apps, but now that Android has received Clip Studio Pro and Krita, the competition has levelled a bit more, at least from the perspective of someone that uses these devices for illustration purposes. I still prefer the IPad's aspect ratio more and this was a determining factor for getting the plus over the S7 as I wanted to factor in the menus taking up space in creative apps. The S7 ends up having less screen estate than the IPad Pro. I do miss certain apps on IPad that feel more polished, but over all the Galaxy Tab S7+ had more pros for me. I do wish Samsung would calm down on the bloatware and not preload so many apps that I can't uninstall, but I think custom roms could resolve this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TLDR: Either tablet is fine, just expect there to be some pros and cons for both. Don't expect a perfect experience on either devices. If you have a preference for either OS, then you'll find a way around the downfalls.

Our role in the 'WITH INTEL' partnership

We have already demonstrated with XMG FUSION 15 that we can be an equal partner to a giant such as Intel. Intel's reference design for the QC71 gaming laptop was sold world-wide through various brands, but no partner like XMG brought so much support and after-sales firmware fine-tuning to the table.
Over the lifetime of XMG FUSION 15 we were always first to release countless BIOS updates, including the major feature upgrade in June 2020 which delivered highly sought-after premium updates to all existing customer, based on the feedback we have received from our community over the months. Up until now, XMG FUSION 15 is still one of our gaming and content creation bestsellers and we plan to continue to support it well into 2021 because it is still a unique combination of form factor, battery life and performance that is still absolutely unparalleled in this industry.
With SCHENKER VISION 15, we plan to repeat this success. We have had countless meetings with Intel since the launch of FUSION 15 to help them shape their roadmap, to deliver customer feedback and help fine-tune the hardware and software solutions of the next generation. We have started testing samples of SCHENKER VISION 15 already months ago and have been instrumental in helping Intel to test their product outside of the lab in a real-life environment, with diverse usage scenarios and with a keen eye on fine-tuning and the quality of user experience. Already in our hands this product has gone through numerous firmware updates and we are looking forward to further fine-tune it ahead of the first consumer-ready shipment in January 2021.

Current List of Feature Requests

We already have a list of talking points with Intel to make sure that this product will go the last mile and reach 100% perfection. For the sake of tracking our progress with Intel, we will share some of the items here.

We commited to All Silver, and All with Touch display. A 'Midnight Black' edition might be planned for later in Q1 2021.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Intel Tiger Lake keep up with AMD's and Apple's latest CPU offerings?
A: Not too bad, I would say. The i7-1165G7 in VISION 15 beats AMD's 4000U series in Single Core performance and reaches ~75% of the result of the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U in Cinebench R20 Multi, despite having only half as many cores.
In Cinebench R23 Multi 10min Loop, the i7-1165G7 reaches ~77% of the result of Apple's M1 in the actively cooled MacBook Pro M1 - although it remains to be seen how these two competitors fare in the skin temperature vs. fan noise department. With a 15.6" housing and the very efficient cooling solution, we expect VISION 15 to be ahead of the 13" MacBook Pro in that regard.
But a CPU is not only about raw multi-core performance - it is also about the platform it is enabling. There is much to be said about the list of little-known features that Intel supports in Tiger Lake, but the key difference makers are PCI-Express 4.0 for outstanding SSD speed and Thunderbolt 4 for unparalleled connectivity. AMD still has no answer for Thunderbolt (and no USB 4.0 implementation either) and Apple's USB 4.0 implementation on the M1 silicon is reported to lack support for eGPUs.
Other notable features in Tiger Lake compared to Intel's predecessors include:
  • Support for 4 displays in total (Intel HD Graphics only supported 3)
  • Native HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4a
  • QuickSync with AV1 hardware-decode up to 8K HDR
  • Intel Gaussian & Neural Accelerator (Intel GNA) for AI acceleration
By the way, if you think Thunderbolt 4 is just a re-brand of Thunderbolt 3 - check out this video of TechQuickie by LinusTechTips.

Q: How does the cooling and audio system of VISION 15 work exactly?
A: It's pretty simple. As you can see in the picture above, the it has a dual-fan cooling solution with one heatpipe for each fan. Now the base unit of the laptop has a mesh above the keyboard. This serves a double function as a kind of speaker mesh and air inlet. Despite the speakers being on the outer bottom edges of the chassis, the unibody is built in a way that it transports the sound very well to that mesh so that the sound feels like it's coming from the screen. The result is a very crisp audio volume - without having to fiddle with any 3rd party audio enhancement apps.

Q: How does the system behave while on-battery?
A: It is part of Intel's Project Evo design guidelines that a system must not throttle too much when running on battery. In VISION 15 this is implemented perfectly, where neither CPU nor iGPU are performing below 95% of the 'plugged-in' performance on a full battery. This number might slightly go down when you battery approaches the lower levels, but you'll be able to work on VISION 15 with full power for a pretty long time overall. Your system will be fully responsive - no matter if plugged-in or on battery.

Q: Does VISION 15 support display output with VESA Adaptive Sync?
A: After already having pioneered NVIDIA G-SYNC in XMG PRO and ULTRA series in recent years, supporting the more open Adaptive Sync standard in as many models as possible is one of our design goals for 2021.
Intel Tiger Lake is the first mainstream CPU platform in which Intel’s iGPU is supposed to support Adaptive Sync according to Intel’s marketing claims.
We tested it on our upcoming XMG CORE 14 with i7-1165G7 and GTX 1650. VRR ouput worked fine*** via Thunderbolt 4 (aka USB-C/DP) with external monitors as long as those are marketed either with “AMD FreeSync” or with “G-SYNC compatile”. Essentially, those are monitors that implement the VESA Adaptive Sync industry standard. However, monitors that implement the proprietary method of NVIDIA G-SYNC (with the built-in G-SYNC module) are not able to support VRR from the iGPU in our tests.
* Curiously, with current Windows and driver, VRR only worked for content that was rendered on the NVIDIA dGPU even though it is indeed displayed through the iGPU framebuffer.

This chart is just FYI, based on XMG CORE 14. Please note that VISION 15 does not have a dGPU and is not planned to be upgraded with a dGPU either.
Now, VISION 15 does not have an NVIDIA dGPU so we need to get it to work on iGPU instead.
According to our contacts in Intel, the lack of VRR on iGPU is due to missing Windows Update. According to Intel, everything already works fine on the “Windows 10 Iron” Build 21H1 19624.200504 (or later) which is currently only available for members of the Windows 10 Insider program. We will try to find out when this patch is supposed to hit the mainstream Windows Update cycles.
However, we don’t assume that proprietary NVIDIA G-SYNC panels will be able to be supported – same like AMD desktop graphics cards can’t support AMD FreeSync on those proprietary NVIDIA G-SYNC panels.
Meanwhile, VRR is called ‘Adaptive Sync’ in the Intel Graphics Command Center and is enabled by default.

Q: Will it be possible to apply Undervolting (Voltage Offset) on the CPU or iGPU?
A: We currently see no avenue to apply undervolting on any of the Tiger Lake systems we are launching. We have discussed the matter with the author of a popular free tool for Undervolting and tried a few unreleased Beta-versions and we are pretty confident in saying that Voltage Offset was still possible in Ice Lake but is currently hard-disabled in hardware for Tiger Lake. We have discussed this with our contacts in Intel and we'll make sure to send any feedback and concerns upstream to Intel.
Apart from Plundervolt which is discussed in this thread, another reason to disable Voltage Offset might be the relocation of the voltage regulators (CPU FIVR, PCH FIVR) in the new architecture. We have reasons to believe that this have has strongly reduced the gains you can make with voltage offset. In other words: the system might already be working at peak efficiency by default. This might warrant further discussion in the future, perhaps when Intel is launching their Tiger Lake "H" series designs (still under NDA). If you have any unique insight on this topic, feel free to share your information in the comments below or via PM.
What we can confirm is that the lowest Idle power consumption of TGL-UP3 has been greatly reduced compared to previous generations. It's now between 3 and 6W in all of the Tiger Lake systems we're currently launching where their Comet Lake (CML) predecessors were usually more like in the 10W ballpark.

Q: Does the Touch Screen support pen/stylus input?
A: It's a capacitive touch screen, so any capacitive pen should work. Pressure detection should be compatible with Bluetooth-connected pens that support Windows Ink, but we haven't tested this yet. Coming soon.

Q: Does the screen rotate when opened by 180°? Does it support tablet mode?
A: The image on the screen does not automatically rotate. However, you can enable convenient keyboards shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Keys) in Intel Graphics Command Center (screenshot).
Tablet Mode can be manually activated in Windows settings. This modifies task-switching behavior and adds an icon for the touch keyboard to the systray. However, even in Tablet Mode the screen will not automatically rotate. Due to the fact that this laptop only has a 180° hinge (not 360°), it is not meant to be used as a hand-held tablet or convertible.

Q: Any plans for a 4K resolution screen?
A: No plans right now. SCHENKER VISION 15 is fixed to deliver a very specific Full-HD Touch Displays with very high brightness and low weight and power consumption. There will be only that one panel - so there isn't going to be a panel lottery like with other brands. We do understand the demand for higher resolutions and we are seeking to be part of the push for high-DPI panels in appropriate form factors in the future. When we picked the new family name for this product, we thought of VISION to be not only our most forward-looking series in the SCHENKER portfolio but also to include products that have stunning visuals. I can already say that 2021 is going to be an exciting year on that front.

Q: How repair-friendly is VISION 15?
A: VISION 15 has seven (7) Torx T6 screws in the bottom cover. The choice for T6 is final as it provides more torque, leading to stronger build-quality without risking wear and tear (i.e. stripped screwheads). We are currently debating whether we should include a free Torx T6 screwdriver with every sold VISION 15. But you can also get them in any PC-centric screwdriver set.
Once you remove the 7 screws, the bottom lid opens very easily. You have access to the Battery, Wi-Fi module and the PCI-Express SSD. At that point you can also clean the fans and heatsinks with canned air.
Removing the mainboard will be very easy as well, requiring you to remove the SSD, Wi-Fi module, 5 ribbon cables and 7 additional screws. The mainboard comes out with the fans and heatsinks still attached as one solid unit.
The LPDDR4x memory is famously soldered on-board. That's why we opt to not offer any configurations below 16GB at launch. LPDDR4x is highly efficient and only available in BGA form. The efficiency helps with thermals and battery life, so it's actually a worthwhile trade-off.
Our cooperation with Intel on XMG FUSION 15 has convinced us that Intel is extremely efficient in their internal RMA handling. We will be able to buy spare parts directly from Intel's factory, but every barebone (minus SSD) will be able to be replaced in Intel's logistics hubs in Europe with zero turnover (Advanced Warranty Replacement, AWR) and very little communication overhead. Having such a strong partner in the back makes it even easier for us to offer our 48h warranty service to end-customers.

Q: How is the keyboard layout going to look like? What function keys do you have?
A: An overview over the German keyboard can be found here. We will offer 25 different keyboard layout at launch - a list can be found here.
VISION 15 continues our recent tradition to offer FnLock - so you can chose between having Fn functions or F keys as the primary input for the top row. Intel also implemented PageUp/Down/Home/End functions on the cursor keys which is something we have done on many of our recent models as well.
Full list:

One item is still missing on the pictures: Fn+Ctrl will be 'Context Menu' key. This should come in one of the next firmware updates and the icon will be printed on the keyboard if we get the firmware early enough.

We are looking forward to your feedback!
