Best Places to Visit in France. If You had travel France how was your experience as a tourist.

Best Places to Visit in France. If You had travel France how was your experience as a tourist.
  1. Paris 📷 It could not be possible to write about travel in France, without stating any of the Paris tourist places? From the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Musee d’Orsay to Notre Dame Cathedral, Ile de la Cité, and Moulin Rouge, the French capital houses some of the most visited tourist attractions in Europe. Originally a tiny island on the Seine River, today Paris has evolved into a traveller’s delight. While it’s a good idea to opt for a Paris tour package that covers all the highlights of Paris tourism, do remember to spare some time to simply soak in the spirit of the place. Because, honestly, there’s no place quite like Paris!

  1. Pont du Gard 📷 The Pont du Gard, South of France, is probably one of the most famous Roman monuments outside of Rome. This extraordinary Roman aqueduct is located just north of Nimes. The Pont du Gard is one of 4 UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the South of France. Complete with an excellent visitors centre and Mediterranean garden, the Pont du Gard, is a special place to visit in France. One of my favourite days out with the kids is head off to the beautiful town of Uzes, 15kms to the west of the Pont du Gard. We like to potter around in the town and grab some lunch in one of the pavement restaurants in the main square.
  2. The Gorges du Verdon 📷 Europe’s answer to the grand canyon, this deep cliff gorge located in the Provence region is a visitor hot spot. Here you’ll find bright turquoise green waters, outstanding scenery and an abundance of wildlife – it’s not difficult to see why this gorge is so popular. Easily accessible from the French Riviera, the national park is a great spot to climb, hike, kayak or just go for a scenic drive.
  3. Provence To witness gorgeous stretches of lavender flowers and lush olive groves, head to Provence, one of the most famous regions in France. If time is not a constraint, it’s recommended that you spend a couple of serene hours at the Sénanque Abbey, a 12th-century church near Gordes. And then, there are tourist trips to picturesque villages of Baux-de-Provence, St. Rémy, and Avignon. You’ll see imposing mountains, magnificent ancient architecture, and, yes, many, many vineyards!

  1. Monte Carlo 📷 I know it is not strictly French, but you have to include Monte Carlo, Monaco in any list of places to visit in France. This tiny but wealthy Principality, covering just one square mile, is the World's smallest Sovereign state after the Vatican. When the state was faced with bankruptcy in 1848, the then Prince of Monaco (Charles III), decided to open a casino. The profits of the famous casino soon proved to be so large that all taxes were abolished and the grateful citizens renamed the hill by the casino 'Monte Carlo' (Mount Charles). Today it is a glitzy place, home of not just the rich and famous but also a legendary Grand Prix. If you get beyond all the enormous yachts and showy jewellery shops, I have always found Monte Carlo quite pleasant to walk around and not too expensive. The view from the top of the Monte Carlo hill up near the castle is absolutely amazing.
  2. Giverny 📷 Giverny is a riverside rural idyll located on the borders of Normandy which is most famous for being the birthplace of impressionism. The small village was once Claude Monet’s cherished country retreat and now both his pink shutterboard house and highly photogenic country gardens are open to the public. Planted by Monet himself, the walled water garden (which inspired so many of his famous paintings) features white and purple wisterias, water lilies, weeping willows, bamboo and the iconic green Japanese bridge.
  3. Annecy 📷 Which is the most photogenic place in France? It’s a tough call, but many would vouch for Annecy, popularly known as the ‘Venice of Savoie’. Peppered with small canals and a 14th-century Chateau (Palais de l’Isle) right at the centre, Annecy is the kind of place that has managed to stay untouched by time. As you walk down the narrow cobbled streets in the old town, surrounded by a huge lake and snowy mountains, you’ll understand why Annecy is so special.
  4. Strasbourg 📷 Located right on the border of Germany and France this heritage city has distinct characteristics of both countries. It’s a picturesque, almost twee town radiating an old world charm which really draws the visitors. Famous for its riverfront half-timbered houses, beautiful gothic cathedral and fondness for flowers, it also makes a great base for those wishing to visit the nearby Black Forest or the River Rhine.
  5. Nice Cannes 📷 If you think of the South of France, then Nice and Cannes spring automatically to mind. Along the 120km coast of the Cote d'Azur, there are many places to stop off and enjoy, such as St Tropez (see below), Frejus, Sainte-Maxime, Cap Ferrat and Cassis; but Cannes with its international film festival and Nice with its exotic buildings and promenade have the wow factor. With its broad avenues, wide sweeping bay and golden beach it is not difficult to see why some 3 million people flock to Nice every year. The long sweep of the Baie des Anges is a magnificent beach, bordered by the Promenade des Anglais - named after the first tourists who came here in the late 18th century and began to transform this once sleepy fishing port into the Mediterranean's premier resort. Only Paris rivals it as a tourist attraction. Equally so, Cannes with its 3 local beaches, narrow streets and celebrity visitors is an excellent base for exploring the South of France.
  6. Mont Saint-Michel Second only to the Eiffel Tower as France’s best-loved landmark, Mont St-Michel is rocky, peaked island which is connected by a causeway to northwest France. An imposing sight sitting amid sandbanks and powerful tides, the heritage site is most celebrated for its Gothic-style Benedictine abbey. Directly below the grand monastery is a medieval village complete with winding streets, small houses and souvenir shops. The island is accessible at all times except when the tide is very high. BALLOON DAY | Full Story

It's easier if I just make one thread, and keep updating as time goes by. Check back from time to time!
The prompt that started this story: Lorix_In_Oz: "Two habitable planets in the same orbit but travelling in opposite directions cross paths twice a year just close enough to brush each other's atmosphere. Six months ago the first balloon expedition successfully crossed, today everyone waits for the explorers' anticipated return."
Chapter One
It was actually admirable, the sheer amount of names we'd conjured up to mark the day. Some chimed in with "Balloon Day", others opting for the more movie-esque "Crossover Day". I didn't really feel the need to place pet-names on such a momentous task - I just referred to it as "the day"; "the day's coming soon, better book the time off" I'd say to friends and family.
And come it did. Thousands gathered in the towns of the world, all holding their own respective celebration. Jubilation was rife as tremendous firework displays illuminated the skies above, the cheers of a billion children and adults alike echoing past every last mountain and tree. The coverage on the television was extraordinary. As a counter devoured the entire lower half of screens placed around many town centres, excitement grew and grew until the counter reached the one minute mark.
It was as though you could hear the whooping and cheering of every beating heart on the planet, as thousands a second chimed in with the communal shouting of the countdown - nine, eight, seven, six.
The people of our town had set up a gargantuan telescope in the center of Plask Field. Gazing through the lens onto the ever-approaching planetary body, the atmosphere tensed ever so slightly as the countdown reached its final digits.
Five.
Four.
Three.
A ghastly shadow began creeping along the surface of the world. Since we were quite high up, it hadn't reached us until this moment. A communal "ooo" was enough to keep everyone's spirits skyrocketing, as the counting climaxed.
Two.
The ever-so-slightly visible surface of a balloon caught the majority's eye. The cheers raised in volume, phones were raised higher than before, and....
One!
Touchdown. And in that instant, it was over. The planet swooped over everyone's heads, eerily silent - passing, crossing - a fleeting and momentary affair. As the body continued behind, most looked back down at their phones - or at the television - to see where the balloon had landed.
The only issue was, it hadn't. The thousands waiting eagerly at the drop zone - in the middle of the water just south of the equator (an event that required a large sum of money and a limited capacity) - must have been dying for their money back. But the world had a suddenly more pressing issue - where did these elusive travellers wind up? Tangled in a tree somewhere? Sinking as we spoke? The questions raised like wildfire.
I went back inside to put the kettle on. It's all sensationalist, I thought as steam began to slowly rise from the spout. They'll find them within a few hours, and we'll all cheer a bit and then go to bed. As the sun dipped ever-so-slightly beyond the horizon, people remained outside; those that decided to leave kept glued to their notifications to hear any more news - the rest either sitting, standing or even camping. It was a sense of togetherness that had a somewhat melancholy note woven into it all of a sudden - would they ever turn up?
Chapitre Deux
Alain glanced outside. The ever-shifting landscape reeling by through a thick pane of glass, the chug of the train engine rattling the strong metal body ever so slightly. He looked back at the other passengers - mostly newspaper-absorbed commuters in a suit, one in particular frantically remedying a fresh coffee stain he'd just created. There were some oddities among these commonplace work-creatures, however - a child in a stripy yellow top, seated next to his father who was reading a slightly weathered copy of Émile Zola's Germinal.
It had been one entire week since the freshly-dubbed Landing Disaster of 2018 had occurred. The press had a field day with all the potential material, and most days the front page seemed like a pained copy of the previous one. The same wordings of the same thing - Mysterious Failure Causes World-Carrier Balloon To Vanish for the more official newspapers, the lesser-known and subsequently more colloquial ones opting for more jovial captions like From Out Of This World To Somewhere On Ours. Alain admitted to himself he liked that one, it made him smile. Someone's patting themselves on the back for that one, he thought.
Alain was travelling up north to Rouen to stay with his grandparents for the weekend. Alain was incredibly close with them - Cammi and Guifford - and had been from an early age. He distinctly remembered watching the beauty of the sunset, sitting on their porch, Cammi doing her knitting and Guifford usually angling for a game of Catch or Hide-and-seek. Alain had never known his father. His mother, Lacina, refused to let him know his name. She feared he would go on a daft trip to search for a man who was simply unworthy of Alain; a boy with such great ambitions. Up until the you-know-what, Alain had wanted to become a pilot. However, now, he suddenly dreamed of crossing the gap between the two worlds. The training was incredibly expensive, required months and months of harsh physical exercise and testing, but Alain knew he could complete anything if he had a goal in mind.
His mother was nothing less of fully supportive. Alain, she'd said a few days after the incident, Mieux vaut savoir que richesse.; A good mind possesses a kingdom. Cammi and Guifford? They were just as supportive, however Alain spotted Cammi wearing her trademark worried smile a little too often when the subject was brought up. I just worry about you, Alain, she'd chime in when asked what was wrong. She had the best of intentions, and was only caring for her one and only grandson, but seeing Alain's face stiffen when she revealed her thoughts tugged at her heart every time. Guifford played the devil's advocate on her part, going to great lengths to chat about the days when he'd watch his little bear - mon ours - soaring across the planetary gap in the World-Carrier balloon. It had a proper name - Earhart, after the famous aviator - however World-Carrier held much more impressive semantics, Alain thought.
Alain was with his grandparents whilst Lacina was working. She was a fashion designer for quite a popular group, and as a result jetted off all over the world on a regular basis. Alain didn't mind; it meant spending time with Cammi and Guifford, inciting the same childhood wonder every time he gazed down the hills on an evening. On a few occasions, Alain would laugh at the irony - he was travelling all the way up north to stare down the hills to the valley below. I should be looking up, he would think to himself, because up is where I'll be soon enough.
Chapter Three
Mr. Hawkson rested backwards in his chair. It was a sturdy old gal, but he knew its final days were rapidly approaching; screws kept falling out, it creaked terribly, and there was that one stain on the right armrest. He surveyed his office - a classic. Some motivational posters he'd found on the internet, boxes upon boxes of paperwork, and a side of the room dedicated entirely to filing cabinets. Two shelves hung off the wall on the opposite side of the room, housing delicately perched trophies from a couple of awards he'd won back in the day. Hawkson hated that term and avoided it like the plague, but sometimes he felt like had to say it for the cliché more than anything.
A young man, only around twenty-two, came barreling into the doorway. His shirt was loosened at the top, one too many buttons undone. He was clearly in a panic and had been working himself up. Hawkson himself stiffened out of dominance, but quickly dismissed the primal tat and pricked his ears for whatever the new arrival had to say.
Sir, he began, we've found traces of a similar material to the Earhart just off the coast of Madagascar. The very words sent a chill sparking down Hawkson's spine. Could this be it? he hoped, the potential excitement creeping onto his face ever-so-slightly. Straightening up again, he stood and made his way to the door and down the hallway.
As he entered the main observation room - at least twenty gargantuan screens dominating three of the four walls - a plethora of rushed shouts suddenly erupted towards him.
Sir!, one of them shouted. A female voice. It was undoubtedly Cassie, his assistant, who found herself worked up over pretty much anything. Others chimed in, all at once.
You might want to see this, a deeper voice proclaimed as Hawkson made his way up the few stairs to the main row of computers. The room was practically black - the walls were crafted from dark wood, and the structure similar to a university lecture theatre. Hawkson expected his old lecturer to appear any minute down at the front, and begin before giving anyone the time of day. He always did that, Hawkson remembered to himself. The screens showed locations and some map software. The team had placed four virtual pushpins onto four points along the coast of Madagascar.
Tell me what I'm looking at, Eric, Hawkson demanded, turning to face his previously-panicked colleague. Now considerably calmer, Eric leaned in to point his pen at the screen before them.
Tapping the first pushpin, and dragging it upwards to meet the other three, he explained the method in their madness.
There was no storm when they were meant to land, sir.
Another colleague finished his thought off. Creeps me out when they do that, Hawkson thought to himself. Like those twins in horror films.
No harsh weather - so no strong winds, heavy rainfall - one began, before Hawkson butted in with I know what harsh bloody weather is, Chris. I want to know why the hell this happened if there was nothing wrong.
Well, if we look at the statistics we were receiving live from the balloon as it made its descent - Chris slowed to a murmur as he clicked around as some graphs began loading, before resuming - as you can see, all tanks were suitably filled, no reported damage, and the weather is monitored as clear skies.
If he mentions the bloody weather again - Hawkson almost muttered, but hesitated and instead chimed in with so what's the problem here?
Chris and Eric looked at one another for a split second, silently electing one or the other to break the news, before Eric turned to face Hawkson's cold stare.
We think it's sabotage., he began, beginning to heat up again as he watched Hawkson's expression turn to a slight grimace, by Mars activists.
The bloody Archons again, Hawkson finally said out loud. I thought they petered out after the last launch?
The Archons were a group opposing the relationship between the two planets. They failed to understand it was practically symbiotic - without the trading and the communication constantly occurring, the two planets would fail dramatically as individuals. They tried to thwart most of the Balloon launches - always failing. Just a group of nutters, Hawkson usually described them as. But this time, they might be slightly smart nutters to pull this off.
The press will have a field day if they find out about this, Eric muttered, causing Hawkson to change what he was about to say. They'll have two, he said instead, one to cover it and one to call us evil for keeping it all to ourselves.
Chapitre Quatre
Lacina picked up the phone to answer Alain's call. He'd apparently received a call from a very professional-sounding British gentleman, asking him if he was interested in joining the Earhart Program, in London, England. Alain had, quite understandably, jumped at the offer. She refrained from chiming in with À goupil endormi rien ne tombe en la gueule - a closed mouth catches no flies - but in the end, decided her child was ready to face the open world with both arms outstretched.
Cammi and Guifford could be heard in the background of the call. Cammi doing her usual worrying, audibly going to great lengths to convince Guifford of her worries about Alain. She told Guifford on a number of occasions during the call that it was simply too dangerous - a balloon travelling between two planets was absurd, and whilst it had worked many times before, it still could easily go wrong. Lacina was, secretly, over the moon - but the logistics of getting him to London, England were as clear as mud. She could pay the horrendously bloated fees, but if Alain returned prematurely on a count of not being accepted, she'd be down a couple hundred Euros. However, she thought herself a good mother, and so told Alain she'd have Cammi and Guifford pitch in along with her and send him to England.
The day came, with Alain up at two o'clock in the morning. Cammi was the only one up - Guifford was out cold, snoring so loudly the paintings in the hallway could have shook. Although a bit tired, Cammi managed to brew some coffee for Alain, keeping her voice at a hushed tone as she wished him the best. Lacina had sent the money to Cammi's account, and the first stop of the morning was for them both to walk down the village in the delicate blanket of early morning light.
The village, although small, housed many shops. The majority were large-brand shops, capitalizing on the bustle of a small settlement by fitting a few Group Casinos in. The rest were home-grown businesses run by local families - the usual; a butchers, a bakers, a library - the list went on. Cammi reached the local Crédit Agricole on one street corner eventually, taking out the money from Lacina, and making her way back with Alain by her side. Alain spoke for almost the entire way back up the hill, about what he'd do if - no, when - he got to Mars. Cammi silently reminisced about her and Guifford's trip to London when they were newlyweds, all those years ago. They would awake at five in the morning to go on a brisk walk, taking in the countryside landscape and the watercolour-esque haze that covered it. They would return for seven, eat crumpets in the kitchen and walk to the village for lunch. It was a blissful week-long holiday, and as Cammi drifted back to reality she realized the sudden coldness of the morning air.
Once they returned, Guifford must have been awake enough to have gotten up, as an empty mug was next to Alain's on the table, and the distant sound of the television could be heard in the other room. When Cammi went to apologize for waking him, Guifford instead appeared with a gift-wrapped box, a huge smile stretched across his face.
Alain clutched the wrapping - it was shiny, reflecting the early-morning rays of sun peeking in through the window. A blue bow encircled it, which Alain opted to pull first to allow for easier unwrapping. He'd inherited that from Lacina - never one to rip anything open. It had to be unpacked neatly and without ripping.
He stood back once the top of the box came off, in a sudden haziness of shock and tearful sentiments. It was Guifford's lucky pin; he'd found it whilst out walking decades ago, picked it up and met Cammi the next day. He lost it a few months after and didn't pay it much attention, however found it whilst clearing up the next day - the day before Cammi revealed she was pregnant with Lacina. There were other notably fluke-y events surrounding the pin, but those were the two Guifford would talk about if someone asked them about it. But something with such sentimental value would never usually be trusted in anyone but Guifford's hands, so he must have felt strongly about Alain's dreams.
After much hugging and kissing goodbye, Alain made his way down the road and into the village again, passing the same shops he'd seen all his life, and further into the bustling streets until he reached the train station. Standing on the tracks, ticket in hand, he breathed in the seven o'clock air. The train was scheduled for quarter-past, yet Alain was stood almost at the edge of the tracks. His entire mind was overrun with anticipation and excitement, his favourite blue scarf wrapped around his neck, and Guifford's pin nestled safely in his pocket. It's not time yet, he thought to himself, imagining dropping the pin onto the tracks by accident. He'd be devastated. He rested his suitcase by his side - Alain wasn't the strongest, but he was surprised he'd carried something almost half his size all the way there.
Finally, as promised, the train made its way closer and closer until the doors flew open, releasing a crowd of commuters. A multitude of busy worker bees emerging from their hive. Alain stepped on board, choosing to stand near the entrance to avoid lugging his suitcase around unnecessarily. The doors shut, as Alain tried to keep his excitement from boiling over onto his face.
