So this was all intended to go into my first post, buuuuuut that one wound up being all about the members haha
For the sake of convenience, I’ll be reposting my disclaimer from the last post: Disclaimer: I will not be commenting on any controversies aside from those that happened in 2012-2013 (Zico’s flood comment+their leaving Stardom). Any other controversies are not relevant to the current conversation. Just know that when it comes to BB’s (and specifically Zico’s) more insensitive actions, I do not condone them, but have chosen to believe they have grown as people and matured, and now know better.
Ok, so first, I just want to do a brief overview of how Block B’s history makes me admire them.
Block B debuted under Stardom Entertainment in 2011, with a debut track called Freeze. Freeze was immediately banned from Korean television before 10 pm and couldn’t be sold to anyone under the age of 19 for... being too sexy, apparently. Zico helped with the production of the album, which considering he was only 17-18 at the time of their debut is incredibly impressive.
Anyways, after Freeze, they kept trying to get their foot in the door but they kept getting stopped. All of their stuff was being deemed “too inappropriate”. Well, until they came out with NalinA in 2012. Although this song isn’t my favorite from them, I’ll always have a soft spot for it. Anyways, it was during their promotions of NalinA that they made perhaps their biggest mistake— or rather, Zico made it for them. During an interview in Thailand, recently after the floods that had swept through and left a lot of people in very bad positions, Zico basically said that all Block B had to give to them, the only aid they could offer, was money. Park Kyung leaned over and asked him how much he had. Zico responded with “7,000 won”, so roughly $6. (This is my understanding, though I have seen people claim that the interview was HORRIDLY mistranslated which made Zico look significantly worse)
This attracted a lot of hate— and it was a very insensitive joke, made by a kid who wasn’t thinking. Celebrities were making posts about it demanding apologies, and the general public was raging about it. And Block B DID release an apology— in fact, Zico shaved his head to show his remorse, and then... the group went dark. Although they issued an apology, people were still angry. A petition was passed around online calling for Zico to kill himself, and it garnered a disturbing amount of signatures. During this time, PO, the group’s maknae, suffered from severe anxiety over the hate Zico was getting and feared he might give in and kill himself. The whole group was put under a lot of strain.
Despite this, after a long period of uncertainty, JUST when things looked like they were over, Block B came back with their album Blockbuster, headed up by the title track Nililli Mambo. And by god did this song do well. It was their first big hit, and it was JUST what they needed.
But then, right when everything seemed to be going perfectly, Block B revealed that all seven of them together were suing their label, Stardom Entertainment! Why, you might ask? Because their label hadn’t paid them since debut! Despite the fact that they’d done tons of performances, appearances, interviews, etc., they didn’t get paid Jack shit for any of it! And to make matters worse, their CEO took off with 70 million won (over $50,000) that he’d collected from Block B’s parents. He then killed himself. Despite the seemingly obvious theft and withholding of payment, Block B lost the lawsuit. They knew they couldn’t stay under Stardom, though, so they negotiated a way out, managed to get the rights to all their songs, stage names, group names, etc, and shifted over to Seven Seasons.
Now Seven Seasons was a new label at the time. And by that I mean it was created FOR Block B. They were its only artist. Which meant that they were BROKE. They still had to come out with music, but they had no money. So, they did everything themselves. Zico and Kyung wrote, composed and produced their songs, U-Kwon and B-Bomb did choreography, PO and Taeil helped with styling, and all their parents provided as much money and clothing as they could spare. It was promoted through their social media. They came back with Be The Light, which talked about the lawsuit, and had an interesting ending...
...which turned out to be the beginning of Very Good, their second smash hit! This was the song that got me into Block B. Shit SLAPS, but more on that later. From there, things only got better. Zico really hit his stride with music, and they came out with Jackpot next. Hit after hit. Toy was their biggest release, which they then followed by a Park Kyung single Yesterday, which swept the charts.
During all this, Park Kyung and Zico had stepped out and started solo careers, and PO, U-Kwon and B-Bomb were put into the subunit, Block B Bastarz (won’t be talking about them much but their stuff slaps, pls go check it out it’s literally so good). In 2017, they all got BACK together for Shall We Dance, and in 2018 they got together to make Don’t Leave, which was promptly followed by Zico leaving Seven Seasons lmao.
The other members re-signed with Seven Seasons, but Zico stepped out on his own. He and the other members were adamant that they were still a 7-man group, but without Zico in the company anymore they couldn’t really do much. Disbandment wasn’t even mentioned. Around this time, Jaehyo and Taeil left for the military. Jaehyo was discharged early due to an injury, and Taeil just finished his enlistment a few days ago. Atm, B-Bomb (136 days), U-Kwon (344 days), Park Kyung (493 days), and Zico (503 days) are all currently serving their time in the military. PO has not yet enlisted.
Now then, on to their music!
Nililli Mambo: This song’s MV is making fun of Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as taking influences from One Piece (the guys are all huge anime fans). You see these seemingly hardened, badass gangsters running around protecting this diamond, right? And they seem cool and seasoned... until you realize that it’s a comedy. Kyung chases a chicken with a frying pan, U-Kwon fires a blank and gets beat up because he was so busy spinning the gun and trying to look cool that he forgot to load it, Zico loses the diamonds, you get the idea. They’re actually terrible at being gangsters. The lyrics from what I could see were mostly talking about how they were finally back and the song is cool and catchy (which is pretty funny ngl). The sped up talking at the end is a pasta recipe. Musically, it’s literally a whole movie-soundtrack-worthy orchestra with a beat and some rap slapped on top, and it’s composed in a way so that their vocals are used LIKE instruments. Very cool.
Very Good: This song’s MV is obviously a parody of The Dark Knight, but it’s also making fun of groups that try too hard to be edgy and dark and weird by... being WAY too edgy and dark and weird. Super fun song to listen to, pretty decent line distribution for the most part, and we see PO in lipstick. Also Jaehyo has a bonding moment with some random lady. My favorite part is the end when they’re all just going crazy in a room with all the extras and background dancers, because if you pause it you can see the guys laughing at each other, and the dancers’ faces just tell me that they did NOT know what they were signing up for lmao.
Jackpot: Probably my favorite Block B song. The song is taking a jab at how predatory the Kpop industry is, basically just saying how even if you work hard it all means nothing because success is a total gamble— lucky for you, you hit the jackpot and made it, but you’d better shake hands with those who got you there or it’ll fuck you over. The MV adds a whole other layer to it, with these crazy clowns taking a perfectly normal kid into their circus, changing her appearance, lecturing her on how all of it is a gamble, turning her into exactly what they wanted her to be, and then being surprised when it doesn’t turn out well for them. The Behind Ver. of this MV is also my favorite thing tbh. You see the behind the scenes outtakes and weirdness of the beginning scene (U-Kwon puts a lemon in his mouth and questions his existence, Zico nearly makes out with a mannequin and almost knocks over the couch, B-Bomb pretends to eat a feather duster, and Kyung appears to be exercising), as well as showing B-Bomb, Jaehyo and Taeil fending off a guy U-Kwon beat at gambling with two chairs and a lamp. It’s beautiful. Musically it’s a masterpiece, with each part of it being inspired by a different era of jazz, and the change up going into the chorus? Legendary.
HER: Now when I first saw and heard this song I thought it was just a cute concept and nothing more. But when you actually look at the MV, their makeup is WAY overdone, the colors are ridiculously oversaturated, and Zico starts rapping with an ostrich while Jaehyo kisses a golf ball and they all jump on a golf cart. Taeil is also put into a shopping cart and has to dance. In the mid-section in the MV, Zico hits us with the iconic “Zico Zico Nii~!”, but if you know anime you know why he chose THAT. In Love Live, the character Nico that says “Nico Nico Nii!” Does so to mock/copy the “ideal high school cute idol”, not to convey that she IS it. So basically, Block B made an entire song taking jabs at all the other groups who were making brightly colored, generic poppy love songs and we all just thought it was another brightly colored, generic poppy love song. Musically it’s super fun, including clapping and singing as instrumentals, incorporating some incredible rap, and taking advantage of Taeil’s higher vocal register and wider range to make harmonies.
Yesterday: Like I said in my other post, this is Friends but Kpop and nobody can change my mind. Some of the beginning scenes in the MV are the cutest things ever and you can tell they’re having a good time, and B-Bomb SLAYS on the bridge. Also PO’s rap in this is my favorite thing. It’s so good.
BONUS: Bastarz - Make It Rain: This is my favorite Bastarz song so I’m including it because I’d go nuts otherwise. This song is about sex, guys. Like there’s no way around it, it’s about getting drunk and having sex. As several of Bastarz’s songs are. HOWEVER, you would not know that if you only watched the MV, which is one of my favorite MVs in Kpop. Yes it’s weird and trippy and there are mediocre special effects, but goddamnit if I can’t enjoy three dudes laying in garbage, gambling, aggressively talking on the phone, and singing karaoke while probably on drugs, then witness them get kidnapped and experience Armageddon only for it to all be fake, then why am I even here? The song slaps, and all three of their parts are perfect. They all suit their parts really well and none of them could’ve done the others’ parts better. PO’s rapping is immaculate* in this song, U-Kwon’s more nasally tone works flawlessly for the cocky, confident character he plays in the MV, and B-Bomb’s falsetto prechorus and bridge give me life. Literally my favorite bridge in Kpop.
Those are the only songs I’m gonna go into for now, since if I did their b-sides and some of their less popular title tracks we’d be here all day!
Lastly I just want to talk about their stage presence. When I got into Block B, I knew nothing about them but their scandals. I had a very negative perception of them. And then I accidentally saw a clip of them performing Very Good and it was like a switch was flipped. They are incredible performers. Oh my god. Their stage presence is insane, and dare I say unrivaled. They completely own the space, no matter how big or small. You can tell they’re having a great time performing, and they usually perform live. How can I tell? Well, they perform OVER a backing track, and even mnet didn’t even bother to mix them together. When they do fully lipsync they make it very clear. But then you hear them perform live, and you remember that oh, right, they sound exactly the same!

Possibly make it mandatory to fortify very cheap foods with minerals and vitamins so the impoverished can get more nutrients. although the body doesnt absorb these very well so it might be pointless.
Make it illegal for a company/business to throw away food stuff and make them donate it to foodbanks/food charities.
Advertising/product placement/Games/Gambling
Ban all adverts to children in any way. Ban alcohol ads, vaping ads, gambling ads, payday loan ads, ads for big SUV/highly polluting vehicles. Ban product placement, ban TV shows for kids that have toys explicitly linked to them. Ban Loot box system in games. Make fixed odds betting machines have lower returns. Electoral reform
I think a system like Single Transferrable Vote would be better than FPTP. I think that registered political parties should somehow get some minimum funding from the state to facilitate a healthy and varied democracy. Remove the hereditary peerages from the house of lords.
availability of credit
I don't think payment plans for normal consumer goods should be available. I think it should be harder to get a pay day loan than it currently is.
Fines
I think that fines for speeding, other fine-able offenses should be means tested and shouldn't have a cap.
Copyright
I think that Copyright should expire for everything after 50 years. So at the this point everything from before 1969 should be in the public domain. I think any British citizen creator who leaves the UK to not pay income tax should have the copyright for their work removed in the UK when they do leave.
Welfare
Introduce Universal basic income in the UK. replace all the means tested and tedious bureaucracy associated with current system. I think it should start from 18 years old and increase slightly each year. Maybe start at 5,000 pounds and by your thirties move up to 10,000 pounds by the time you want to start having kids etc. I think UBI would make work always pay more than being on benefits. It would disincentive benefits fraud as well as people having children to acquire more benefits.
Tax
I do believe in a progressive taxation system. I think the tax free threshold should be raised. I think the brackets for taxation are good at the moment but I would add higher tax thresholds at higher rates e.g. 50% at 200,000, 60% at 500,000. I am unsure what the upper limit should be for tax rate or income. The rich will leave anyway (Jim ratcliffe most recenty) no matter what the tax rate is. If they ever wants to come into the UK they should have to pay to do so. If they have a knighthood it should be taken away.
Immigration.
remove all EU citizens not in critical under supplied or high paying jobs from the UK as well migratory workers from outside the EU. Syrian Civil war refugees should go back as well. basically as many people as possible should be made to go back to their country of origin without directly endangering their lives. I think the pay threshold for workers to legally migrate here should be much higher probably 40,000 pounds a year. there should be not net migration to the UK each year.
children and population growth
I think the UK should aim for net 0% population growth. I think couples who want to have kids should be made to screen for any hereditary recessive genetic diseases before they plan to have a child so they can know if they're kid is going to be disabled. Possibly people should have to have in the womb embryo testing as well to see if theyre child has any genetic diseases. legalise child euthanasia (like belgium and the netherlands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groningen_Protocol). I think people should be discouraged from having lots of children especially those without the means to provide for them. however if people do decide to have kids I think the provision for parenting should be a lot. 2+ years of paid maternity leave. free parenting lessons, support as much as possible the needs of the child and mother in the critical early bonding years. Ban all Child beauty pageants including trans ones (like france has done). I don't think childen can legally consent to hormone replacement drugs. I think the age of criminal responsibility should be raised should be raised to about 14. I think there are arguments to lower the age of consent in the UK to 15.

currently if you live outside the UK for more than 6 months you don't pay any income tax. I think the amount of income tax you pay should be proportionate for how long you spend in country with a bare minimum of 20% (estimate).
Make shell companies illegal so large multinationals can't escape to tax havens and not pay corporations tax. If they don't ban them from trading in the UK. This may need to be done in a coalition of states working together.
education
repeal Blair era education legislation that created needless hoops and paper work for teachers. repeal new laws that teachers can you sources from anti-capitalist, anti-democratic sources etc. repeal the Gove/Cameron legislation that made schools behave like businesses. The point of school is for the kds to work hard and earn qualifications not the teacher. It is an inherently discriminatory system. allow at GCSE much more education in technical qualifications. e.g. bricklaying, carpentry, electricians etc, machine work. I don't think they need to start at 16 or above. I think theres an argument that children should be able to leave school at 16. Some of the courses they do are pointless. Apprenticeship pay is so low that in the short term it makes more sense to get a minimum wage job. Atleast make apprenticeship pay in line with minimum wage to incentivise it rather than literally force kids to be extremely cheap labour.

I think it should be legal to carry around pepper spray, mace or stun gun. The criminals already have weapons. Why not decriminalise the ability for an individual to defend themselves especially women. Free female self defence classes.
BBC

Make corporations who sell goods in the UK prove that they don't come from slave/child labour. If they don't then they can't sell that product in the UK.

like Australia make it mandatory to go to the polling booth.
University
make universities offer their humanities subjects as online only option so that people can do their degree from anywhere and not necessarily in the expensive university town. the course would be cheaper. Make foreign students pay for their healthcare when they are here.
Tourism
make foreigners pay to get into British Museums especially the big ones in london. I realise this may be cost prohibitive for smaller Museums.
Housing
change the rental legislation that tenants can legally not pay full rent if a landlord hasn't done repairs to the standard of the property when the renter moved in.
No foreigner can own more than 2 homes in the UK (in thailand you can't own any property unless you're thai)
Cap the number of a properties anyone can own. especially for buy to let landlords.
If a house has sat vacant for too long it has to be put on the market as a competitive price.
houses cannot be treated as an investment where it doesn't matter if its occupied or not. a roof over ones head is a right.
Homelessness
expand the access to homeless shelters. the best way to stop human and sex trafficking as well hard drug use to is stop homelessness.
migratory farm workers
ban migratory farm workers in the UK. there are thousands of Uni, GCSE, college and A level students who have months off school in the picking season. Why not get them to pick fruit and vegetables? same thing goes for homeless people. Get them all to pick fruit and veg.
littering & dog tax
small tax on having a dog to pay for dog park maintenance, dog bins, etc. small tax on single use packaging to pay for more Bins on high street, bins to be emptied more regularly to reduce littering. Same small tax on tobacco for cigarette butt bins.
