You know me as the girl who plays with fire,
But this is the song I wrote you in the dark ...
Madness, intellect, audacity?
Grimes, the stage name of Claire Boucher, is an electronic musician and multimedia artist from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. How ordinary and uncontroversial that makes her sound. As any Pophead surely knows by now, Grimes is far from either of those things.
Much of the lore behind Grimes' early career seems well-known by now to her fans: she attend McGill University in Montréal, Québec (a very prestigious school) where she had an interest in neuroscience and worked on her Russian, a language she had first picked up in childhood (she is of French and Ukrainian heritage, and her name means "clear (f.) butcher" in French, a fact she finds hilarious). She chose her stage name after hearing of grime music on her MySpace (which is still around), and listed her music as "grime" despite never having heard grime music before (she ended up liking it, by the way). She also goes by c, the physical constant for the speed of light, because she finds her name hard to pronounce (she has a slight speech impediment, as well as a lisp for the sound /s/, though she doesn't care about the latter).
Grimes learned to use recording software in university (Apple's GarageBand) and about music production from friends, and got involved with the music collective Lab Synthèse, which had a production space in a now-closed warehouse in Montréal and spawned the label Arbutus Records, which has since housed many Canadian indietronica acts. Grimes' first two albums were released on this label: Geidi Primes, a concept album about her favourite novel, the science fiction epic Dune; and Halfaxa, an ambient electronica album that has been described as gothic, both in 2010. Not expecting that anyone would hear her debut (it was first released as a run of 30 cassettes with hand-drawn covers by her), both albums were well-received by critics, to her surprise. All writing and almost all production was done on both by her alone.
Grimes' early work was linked to the "witch house" microgenre, an underground scene of electronic music that was gothic in both sound and aesthetic, and was briefly popular around the early 2010s. (This can be seen on the tracklist of Halfaxa with that scene's trademark use of arcane symbols in their titles.) In 2011, she released the split EP Darkbloom with fellow Canadian electronic musician D'Eon, with the first five tracks being by her. Notably, this EP had her first song to have a music video, the self-directed "Vanessa". Her breakthrough, though, was yet to come.
If you're looking for a dream girl, I'll never be your dream girl
Visions (2012), Grimes' first LP with her new label 4AD, won her widespread acclaim and made her a cultural phenomenon in her home country of Canada. The album gave a more accessible and poppy spin on her early mix of dark, ambient and psychedelic music, and is a bewitching, trance-like album to listen through. Although the first single from it was "Genesis" with a music video featuring Brooke Candy, she won acclaim for her song "Oblivion", written about her own experience with sexual assault and trauma afterward. During this time, Grimes' image became linked with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype, the concept of "kawaii" (a Japanese aesthetic which roughly translates as "cuteness") and her waiflike appearance; as well as her reputation as an outspoken feminist.
Grimes has expressed dislike of being misinterpreted as a less serious musician during this time because of her turn towards a pop sound and aesthetic, as well as frustration at not being taken seriously as a woman music producer, still fairly uncommon in electronic music. Indeed the recording of Visions is a key part of Grimes lore: she made the album alone at her home in a matter of weeks, neither sleeping nor eating, and taking amphetamines to stay focused (she has alluded to possibly having ADHD before). [Author's note: Grimes has since disavowed the association of her music with drugs, saying that she has struggled with addiction in the past.]
Her next album came in 2015: the widely acclaimed Art Angels, which saw a turn towards an even poppier sound and moved away from the ambient and psychedelic feel of Visions towards classic synthpop and electronica. Art Angels was recorded again at her home, now in Los Angeles, and showed a mix of strong pop hooks with more intelligible lyrics that touched on themes of personal doubts, lost friendships, and her place in the music industry. [Because this album is most likely her best-known on Popheads, I will not discuss it in much depth].
Infamously, she was quoted in 2019 as calling the album a "piece of crap", a narrative she has refuted since, saying her comments were taken out of context. Despite her success, neither Visions nor Art Angels had any singles that charted highly even in her home country, but she gained a loyal cult following online. To accompany the album, she also released The Acid Reign Chronicles, a series of music videos by her and her best friend HANA).
How could one follow up an album that's been repeatedly called one's magnum opus? It would have to be something crazy, wouldn't it? Something that's provocative ... it gets the people going ...
This is the sound of the end of the world
Does anyone think global warming is a good thing? I love Grimes. I think she's a really interesting artist
We come to it at last: Miss Anthropocene, stylized at release as Miss_Anthrop0cene, Grimes' fifth studio LP and my pick for album of the year.
It’s called Miss_Anthropocene. It’s a concept album about the anthropomorphic Goddess of climate Change: A psychedelic, space-dwelling demon/ beauty-Queen who relishes the end of the world. She’s composed of Ivory and Oil - Grimes via Instagram
?
The way I figure it is that climate change sucks and no one wants to read about it because the only time you hear about it is when you’re getting guilted. I wanted to make climate change fun. Miss Anthropocene has got a Voldemort kind of vibe. She’s naked all the time and she’s made out of ivory and oil. It’s going to be super tight. [...] If I’m stuck being a villain, I want to pursue villainy artistically. If there’s nothing left to lose, that’s actually a really fun idea to me. I think it has freed me artistically. The best part of the movie is the Joker. Everyone loves the villain. Everyone fucking loves Thanos. Let’s make some Thanos art. (Source)
If you haven't heard this album or know anything about it yet, you might be thinking: Wait, what?
Miss Anthropocene is a concept album about the apocalypse. As Grimes said, she wants to make climate change fun. We're living in a new epoch, the Anthropocene, the age of humanity, so named because we now have the power as a species to alter our environment, or even destroy it. Some might find this disturbing. Grimes, however, finds it thrilling.
So my album’s about a modern demonology or a modern pantheon where every song is about a different way to suffer or a different way to die. If you think about it, god-making or god-designing just seems so fun. The idea of making the Goddess of Plastic seems so fun to me. - Grimes
As is common with Grimes: Is she serious? Is she trolling? Being edgy? When the news is full of natural disasters, species extinctions and dire warnings about a climate apocalypse, why would anyone want to make an album about how dying from climate change is awesome? Well, it should be said: Miss Anthropocene is not Grimes. She is a character, a personification of our times, and she is also (this is very key) a villain. This is, as Grimes has done before and shown a long-running interest in, a work of science fiction.
It would be absurd not to talk briefly about how our last year was dominated by the life-altering effects of COVID-19 and how life in quarantine has felt like the apocalypse to many. It's been hard on us, our mental health, our finances. This isn't a "quarantine album", and the album was mostly finished before the virus appeared in the news. Grimes did not predict it, but she ended up making the perfect soundtrack to our dire 2020 anyway and how powerless we felt to do anything about it. "You're gonna get sick, you don't know when", she sings. The threat was always looming whenever we went out, and when we stayed in we had little to do often but doomscroll through news articles about wildfires, protests against police brutality worldwide, a draining election cycle in America, take your pick. Last year was frankly a shitshow no one saw coming - though maybe they should have. Things just aligned right with this album being full of darker lyrical themes, and darker in sound than the bright-sounding Art Angels.
We had a taste of what the album would be like before it came out with the song "Pretty Dark" (video, a demo track released in 2019 that didn't make it onto the album. On this song, Grimes explores alternate characters, being a girl named "Dark", as a chance to escape from her Grimes persona. However, the concept of the album ended up being much more complex, with a whole pantheon of "new gods" that are fitting for our time, each song representing a different facet of the modern world. Here they are as listed on her website months before the album came out:
  1. Goddess of climate crisis: Miss Anthropocene
  2. Demon of addiction: "Delete Forever"
  3. Goddess of ID and social media: War Nymph, her digital avatar
  4. Demon of AI: "We Appreciate Power"
  5. Goddess of gaming: "Violence"
  6. Demon of political apathy: "My Name is Dark"
  7. Goddess of simulation: "4ÆM"
  8. Demon of ego death: "Before the Fever"
  9. Goddess of digital lust: "IDORU"
  10. Demon of sexual assault: "Darkseid"
  11. Goddess of gender roles: "So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth"
Isn't this pretentious? Maybe. But it's optional: you don't need to know all of the album's lore to understand what Grimes is singing about on it. For those who wish to know the background and thought process behind the album in more detail, I highly recommend reading this interview with another uncontroversial Popheads fave, Lana Del Rey first, then delving into her Genius annotations. For now I'm going to give my own, somewhat subjective (!) takes on what each track is about.
Annihilation sounds so dope!
In 2020, Grimes became a mother for the first time with partner Elon Musk, having a child named X Æ A-Xii (the Roman numeral for 12); a breakdown of how they came up with this unusual name can be found here. Grimes and Musk met in 2018 on Twitter, bonding over an obscure philosophical reference (a thought experiment about the dangers of AI called Roko's Basilisk) and made their first public appearance together at the Met Gala that year. Because Musk is (I would argue) an even more controversial figure than Grimes is, I won't be talking about him otherwise, nor do I believe it's relevant to the album. However, this song does touches on her feelings about pregnancy and motherhood, having to (in her words) sacrifice her body to another being.
When Grimes announced her pregnancy in a rather cryptic Instagram post, there was some debate over whether she was pregnant herself at all (remember, she trolled the media in 2019 by claiming to have had an experimental eye surgery which makes zero biological sense). This was cleared up soon, however. On this song, Grimes reflects on being (as the saying goes) heavy with child, bringing new life into a world with an uncertain future. This entrancing song sets the tone for the rest of the album, as does its music video, which begins with a reference to the classic sci-fi film Blade Runner (a movie about rogue androids in Los Angeles that takes place in the far-off year of ... 2019, the year of the song's first release).
This song references the name of a powerful comic book supervillain, as well as Grimes' Playstation user ID, with online gaming being (her words) "where I go to kill people and stuff". The song features lyrics in Mandarin Chinese by Taiwanese rapper 潘PAN (Pan Wei-Ju), also known as Aristophanes, who had a feature on Art Angels' "Scream". A fan translation can be found here. Here Grimes develops upon her fascination with villains and death, while the lyrics by 潘PAN are hard to interpret literally, but paint a vivid picture of death and decay. The opening line feels quite fitting for a year where many of us sat at home all day being anxious (Unrest is in the soul / We don't move our bodies anymore ...) while the operatic backing vocals call to mind religion and medieval themes, another long-running interest of hers. However this is by far the most difficult song for me to connect with its "god" in concept, and I think its original concept was most likely just abandoned.
On this song, released only a couple of weeks before the album itself, Grimes surprised fans with a poignant acoustic ballad with influences from country music - not exactly the kind of genre she is known for doing. Taking the title from a prompt on her computer, Grimes wrote this song about the opioid crisis in North America, being saddened by the death of rapper Lil Peep, who had overdosed on fentanyl (a powerful opioid and dangerous street drug). As well, she touches on her own experiences with drug abuse (I did everything / More lines on a mirror than a sonnet) and being around drug culture in her youth, having lost many friends to drug addiction herself; she compares the experience of feeling euphoric on drugs to the myth of Icarus flying too close to the sun. Grimes describes this song as emotionally hard to perform for her, as is "Oblivion". In the video, she plays a queen overlooking a crumbling empire.
Grimes brings up again her fascination with the history of warfare and weaponry over a club banger, produced by the late i_o (Garrett Lockhart) who sadly died in November of unknown causes. Described as a love song sung between the planet Earth and humanity that portrays a dysfunctional relationship between the two; in describing the concept behind the music video, Grimes also talks about digital violence as a modern addition to the physical violence of the past, which is fitting given its "god" is video games.
The video, filmed in the Vibiana cathedral in Los Angeles, features Grimes surrounded by women wielding swords and dance choreography inspired by Tiktok, with a cameo by HANA as the dead woman on the floor. Though Grimes didn't plan to put this song on the album, and the video was choreographed and filmed in a hurry, nevertheless she was pleased with the results. With its edgy and ironic concept (no, Grimes does not really love violence, nor does the Earth; she does collect swords though), as well as its excellent production, this is my own favourite song on the album.
Written for the long-delayed video game Cyberpunk 2077, in which Grimes plays an NPC named Lizzy Wizzy, this track has Grimes make use of her love of Bollywood films, sampling the soundtrack of the historical drama Bajirao Mastani. Grimes is well-known for her insomnia (see: the recording of Visions above), which is in turn known for its health effects (explaining the lyrics about getting sick). Here Grimes seems to portray being up all night in an ambivalent way. [Having stayed up all night many times, including to write this piece you are reading right now, I can confirm it only feels fun up to a point, after which it becomes exhausting.]
To me this sounds like great music to play in a futuristic city at night - Grimes is a big fan of the cyberpunk genre herself, which tends to feature this setting, as shown by her previous references to Blade Runner and Akira (an influence upon the video of "Delete Forever").
Here Grimes gets into the theme of the album as being inspired by the "gods" - secular replacements for religion - that underlie the concept of the album, the most important being the goddess of climate change (Miss A herself) but including addiction ("Delete Forever"), insomnia ("4Æm"), and more.
I was like, “Well, who are the new gods?” Because we have all this new stuff. We have plastic and pollution and plastic surgery and social media. The new gods sound sick. They sound like … like the Sailor Scouts, like these sick demons. - Grimes
Here Grimes also alludes to her image as gothic, describing herself as wearing "black attire, black eyeliner", fittingly for a bleak-sounding, pessimistic song. Being the slowest track on the album, it may be hard to get into, but it wouldn't be the same without it.
Grimes described her thoughts behind the making of this song in this ... interesting tweet. (I voted for "fighting Balrog", but it seems closer to the latter.) Her "nu metal song about insomnia" ended up being not quite either but does show some of the influence of industrial music on the album; she again brings up drug use, sleeplessness and her alter ego of "Dark" from the single "Pretty Dark".
It’s just about pretty obvious, like, paradise in hell, making the decision to be good or bad. The specter of death always haunting you. It was serious. - Grimes
Grimes depicts herself as jaded and nihilistic (The boys are such a bore / The girls are such a bore / I never trust the government and pray to God for sure, yeah) in the lyrics and alludes to mental illness and self-destructive urges with the opening lines about wishing for annihilation ("When you don’t care if you live or die, when you’re so depressed that you’re like, 'Whatever, fuck it'"). She also hints at her long history of controversies and misconceptions in the media (I'm not shy but I refuse to speak / Because I don't trust you to understand me). Grimes found the song very difficult to make, wanting it to sound "roaring" with its screaming vocals.
In one of her most melancholy-themed songs, here c. sings openly about suicide ideation, conceptualizing it as another demon of hers. She brings up various suicide methods and self-harm, and imagines herself in death as happy. Despite its morbid subject matter, this is a deceptively upbeat song musically. Although self-destruction and death are recurring themes on this theme, this is the one where she talks most about wanting to die herself.
First of all, that title is almost too on the nose for an album released in February 2020.
Here Grimes sings about hedonism in the first verse and uses an old joke as a metaphor for death (There are many ways in / But there's only one way out), referring to birth and death. She explains the title thus:
Grimes explained how she wanted "Before the Fever" to invoke the "literal feelings" of dying — the uncertainty, desperation, and bizarre tranquility presumably felt when one knows it's the end. "Fevers are just kind of scary, but a fever is also sort of poetically imbued with the idea of passion and stuff, too," she told him. "It's like it's a weirdly loaded word — scary, but compelling and beautiful." What's more terrifying and more beautiful than committing yourself to another person when everything could very well implode in your face? One could even call it romantic. (Source)
Even though it was written before the COVID-19 outbreak became serious, nevertheless the theme of this song could easily be called love in the time of coronavirus for the way it combines metaphors of illness with romance (cf. the analysis of "Violence").
By far the happiest-sounding song on the album, this seven-minute epic is also the longest, and much needed after the dark themes that pervade much of it. Beginning with what sounds like birdsong, it's a fun, cute, lighthearted ditty that gives a bit of much-needed hope to the album (I wanna play a beautiful game / Even though we're gonna lose / But I adore you). Maybe we're all going to die and humanity will go extinct; maybe not. If that's going to happen, can't we have some fun anyway?
As an aside, the title is a neat pun on the phrase "I adore you" but also seems to be referencing the novel Idoru ("idols") by famed cyberpunk author William Gibson, in turn about the Japanese concept of "idols", a unique kind of celebrity.
There has been fan speculation over who, if anyone, the song may be about; Grimes alluded to its meaning on a livestream with HANA but did not say in the end. My own take is that it could just as well be about the Earth itself.
These are all ten of the tracks on the standard edition of Miss Anthropocene; on the deluxe version(s) there are five bonus tracks, four of which are alternate mixes of other songs on the standard edition that differ mainly in length ("So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth", "Violence", "My Name is Dark" and "IDORU"). These seem to have been done to make the longer tracks more suitable for playlists, explaining the name "algorithm mix" for them. As well, there is one more: the original WAP.
First of all: what a fucking BANGER.
"We Appreciate Power" is a bonus track that was released as a single in 2018. It was originally meant to feature vocals by Poppy, who had featured Grimes on her own 2018 album Am I a Girl? but after a feud between the two, she was replaced with HANA. Musically, it is influenced heavily by nu-metal, it blends crunchy distorted guitars and loud rock drums with an awesome electronic drop. Grimes' and HANA's vocals trade between verses and choruses and blend so well it is hard to tell which part is whose upon first listen. This song was due to have a larger-budget music video, but ended up getting a bare-bones video instead, which is still a very fun watch with its cyberpunk visuals.
Lyrically, it was inspired by a North Korean girl group who make propaganda music for the state, as well as Grimes' fascination with the concept of an AI dictatorship. "We Appreciate Power" touches on common cyberpunk themes like mind uploading, transhumanism and simulated reality. The song portrays AI rule as something desirable yet frightening, punctuating the lyrics with unsettling shrieks and ending the song with Grimes chanting "Submit" repeatedly. Despite its tongue-in-cheek nature, the song's lyrics led to a minor controversy: for her speculation of AI replacing humans, musicians Zola Jesus and Devon Welsh called her a "silicon fascist" and they got into a spat on Twitter that seems to be resolved, with Grimes acknowledging Zola made some good points. As for the prospect of an AI takeover: it's frankly a terrifying thought, but at least we'd have jams like this.
Now is the time to burn twice as bright and half as long. Sincerely, Miss Anthropocene
This writeup is dedicated to all those cyberpunks who fight against injustice and corruption every day of their lives! (DJ mix)
Thanks so much for letting me do this writeup, Popheads - and thank you if you made it to the end. I know there is a lot here, but Grimes is a longtime favourite artist of mine and I had a lot to say. I hope I've been reasonably balanced here and not come off as an apologist stan; I am well aware Grimes can be "messy" or a "problematic fave". However, I've tried to explain the best I can what this album is really about, give my thoughts, and explain why I think it's one of the albums of the year. As well, if I said anything factually wrong, please let me know; I tried my best to source everything and get things right.

Questions for the culture:

  • [Voice of Anthony Fantano] What did you think of the album? Did you love it? Did you hate it?
  • The album was infamously leaked months before its release. (I didn't listen to the leak.) Did you listen to it or not, and do you think it may have affected fan reception to the album?
  • A big problem with concept albums is that they often have an elaborate concept that doesn't come across well in the lyrics. What do you think of Grimes' concept for this album and did she succeed at it? Do you have different readings of the lyrics than what I wrote?
  • How would you say this album holds up against her others? Was the darker tonal shift a good thing? Would you have liked her to make a more upbeat or poppy album?
  • How would you rank it this among the year's albums? Were they better on average, worse, etc.?
Feel free to ask me any other questions, bring up other topics as you like and I will respond to everyone. (I just have one request though: please for the love of god do not bring up Grimes' partner or child; I think it's messy and like I said, not very relevant to the album anyway.) Any other topic, no matter how "spicy", is fair game though. Just be nice.
Hope reading this was fun! We have more AOTY posts every day for the rest of the month, so be sure to check those out too.

Subject of the day : Organic Portals

Awakening is brutal, knowledge accumulates and connects with each other: children of the new generation (indigo / crystal / rainbow), spirituality, entities, attacks, extra-terrestrial life, shadow government , etc ...
I don't realize (not at first, at least) that in my awakening and reconnecting to who I am, I am dragging some of my loved ones with me.
And then I realize that these same relatives are experiencing more and more problems at their work, in relations with colleagues in particular: manipulation, harassment, verbal violence, lies ...
And then, yesterday, conversation with a friend. We talk, we talk. And then BIM, the connection is made.
During my bulimia of so-called alternative knowledge via youtube videos, I came across a certain David Icke (I invite you to document yourself on him), who speaks of a very particular phenomenon, about which I invite you to learn more: the “organic portals”. Késako you will tell me. Normal.
When you start to take an interest in so-called alternative or conspiratorial information, especially in the spiritual side, you learn a few concepts that risk destabilizing Tata Andrée at Christmas dinner (joke). Therefore, I cannot do the job for you, and strongly encourage you to do your own research. I don’t want to give you a fully cooked, pre-chewed job. Does the subject tickle you? So find out for yourselves. Ah yes, and don't forget to take your free will under the elbow! It can help ...
So organic portals. David Icke gives a very simple definition of it: it is about people disconnected from their divine connection (in other words, they are disconnected from their soul, yes my darlings we have a soul!). He describes them as people who are quite capable of being pleasant, with whom we can have fun, have a drink… Their faces are revealed when the system in place is threatened. When I say system, I'm talking about the system in the organizational sense of the word: government / finance and whatnot, but also the thought system.
And that's where the revelation came to me: I felt that narcissistic pervert and organic portals, well, it was THE SAME THING. Ouch, awareness hurts! This is not a realization that I explain to myself or even about which I can argue with evidence, studies and numerous testimonials to support it. No. I am writing this article with the fear of talking nonsense, but the belief that this article (in this light we will say "unpublished") could help some of them pushes me to persevere and overcome my fears. My feelings are my only guide as I write these lines.
When I think about it for two seconds, I think the two expressions are meant to describe pretty much the same thing. Each term belongs to a particular focus from the discipline to which it corresponds, and therefore does not describe the phenomenon in its entirety (hence the interest in having different insights), but in the mechanisms underlying the phenomenon. functioning of narcissistic perverts / organic portals, here we are. It “matches” as our English friends would say.
What is a narcissistic pervert? (Forgive me if I forget certain characteristics, for a robot portrait of these birds, I urge you (yes, again!) To read Marie-France Hirigoyen's book, Le harassment moral).
A narcissistic pervert is someone without any empathy who, in order to "fill themselves" (for these are empty shells), target high energy / worthy people to vampirize them, often for years. On the program, systematic devaluation, isolation of the "prey", manipulation, harassment. As the friend I quoted above rightly illustrated, it is the Chinese torture of gout on the forehead: a little bit at a time, for a very long time. This is the perfect crime: it goes unnoticed by loved ones, and the victim is convinced that it is she who has the problem.
As soon as the victim, this fly stuck in the web, pretends to struggle, it is the tragedy: the executioner-spider redoubles his intelligence, his violence. It takes it a step above.
Very often they are very popular people. You know, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In public, you have the right to Dr Jekyll: charming, humorous, ready to help, intelligent, with wit ... It is in the privacy that the narcissistic pervert reveals his real face, that of Mr Hyde: devious, manipulative, cold, brittle, distant.
You're gonna tell me, yeah that's all well and good, but what's that got to do with organic portals?
Going back to David Icke's definition, organic portals are people, seen from the outside, very likeable. It is when the "system" (whatever it is) is threatened that their true face appears.
Okay, I think the connection is made right?
I'm not saying all organic portals are narcissistic perverts. However, I can't help but make the connection between the two definitions, each shedding light that I find complements the other.
But there is something else, something that I did not find in the definition of the narcissistic pervert or that of the organic portal. Something that I figured out last night that I hope with all my heart will help some of you. The connection was made "like this" (neuro-right-handed people will understand).
What I understood is that narcissistic perverts / organic portals are in fact SLEEPING AGENTS. Earlier, I said that narcissistic perverts target very specific people. People carrying energies and / or high values. Bright people, so bright that they do not think badly or be suspicious. People so bright that the empty shell of the narcissistic pervert / organic portal cannot help but do everything to vampirize that person. A person so bright that the narcissistic / organic portal pervert is sure to have a storehouse of energy for quite a while.
When I use the term SLEEPING AGENT, that is ... that is really it. As if the organic / perverse narcissistic portal was PLACED alongside the luminous soul. The characteristic of an agent is to be undercover, to be incognito in the eyes of those he is charged with muzzling.
Placed alongside a luminous person but not awakened to his nature (and who says non-awakening means absence of consciousness, which leaves the field open to abuse), the narcissistic pervert / organic portal is in fact the guarantor of his NO -AWAKENING. I insist on this term. It’s Agent Smith who watches and muzzles Neo (if you don’t know what that phrase refers to, you’ve missed THE movie of all time, MATRIX. Correct that insult immediately).
More and more around me, I see / feel indigos / starseeds / lightworkers, and often, when we share our respective life paths, I find the same pattern: an organic / narcissistic perverse portal that has deployed a mad energy and intelligence (which I would qualify as prodigious if the design was not so "dark") to stifle any attempt to awaken the luminous person. As long as the luminous person remains calm, in the framework which is granted to him, “all is well” (to be qualified, of course!). It is only when there is assertion of its own nature, assertiveness, refusal to deny itself or its moral values, that the organic / perverse narcissistic portal takes action.
He uses his high intelligence to do this (because yes, he's smart, which makes him all the more formidable). In addition to his intelligence, the narcissistic pervert has an instinct, a bloodhound instinct, which can confuse those of us who have equated intuition with connecting with our soul. It may seem difficult to understand / admit / accept that a person disconnected from their soul can have intuitive knowledge. It is, however. The narcissistic pervert / organic portal senses with formidable precision who he is dealing with. Marie-France Hirigoyen describes it very well in her book: a narcissistic pervert will never measure himself against another narcissistic pervert. Like two poles of a magnet, they repel each other. No, the narcissistic pervert / organic portal is going to sniff and flush out its exact opposite. I would also like to pick up on this, because I had an awareness on the subject.
I meet a lot of indigos / starseeds / lightworkers who have rubbed shoulders with a narcissistic organic / perverse portal, as I said above. What I notice in many others is a devaluation of themselves, a mechanism used by the narcissistic pervert and which the victims have internalized. Tell yourself one thing: the narcissistic pervert / organic portal is only going to seek out its exact opposite, its exact reflection. The more powerful the narcissistic pervert / organic portal is on the "negative" side, the more it will mean that you are too, on the other side of the Force so to speak, so on the "positive" side. Do you doubt yourself, your worth? Remember this simple thing, it will help you.
Which brings me to a parallel between Batman and the Joker.
The next paragraph is for those of you who have seen The Dark Knight from Christopher Nolan's Trilogy, where Batman faces off against the Joker. In this film, the ambition of the Joker (Evil) is not to earn money (he burns his rightful pyramid of banknotes) or to be famous (he wears a mask, puts on makeup). No, his ambition is to bring the Light to join him in the Shadows, which he succeeds with the prosecutor of Harvey Dent, whom everyone nicknames "the White Knight of Gotham" (and what explains very good Alfred when he recounts his trip with the thief of precious stones, I let you watch this passage from the film). There is one passage that stood out to me, the one where the Joker pokes his head through the window of the police car he stole, with a posture that is close to a form of ecstasy.
This is what the narcissistic / organic portal pervert does: he causes the Light to go out (while managing to convince it that it is his own doing and not the fruit of an external psychological pounding) and enjoys, fills with what it causes. It’s his food.
Also, the characteristic to remember is that the narcissistic / organic portal pervert will play on your weaknesses, but not all of them. He will only press the buttons that he uses, or that he will use later.
It will also not attack what is acquired for you, what you feel at ease and in accordance with your conscience. No, the narcissistic pervert / organic portal is going to attack you for what you doubt, what you are not totally at peace with yourselves about.
To give you an example, it’s like someone is hugely supporting me that my eyes are brown when they’re blue. They are blue, and I'm sure of it because I see them every morning in the mirror. In the face of such an attack, I would be serene, because I am totally sure of what I am saying. On the other hand, if someone attacked me on a fear that I carry within me (cycling for example), then I would be destabilized, and easily tempted to fall into the emotional.
On top of that, the genius of the ploy is that these doubts I told you about above are not "surface" doubts. No, these are doubts, deep doubts about yourself and how you function, your personality, what you carry within you, doubts that you often carry around since childhood. Hey yes, because what the narcissistic pervert / organic portal makes us doubt is directly related to what we are (when I say we, I am referring to parents, parental figures, circle of friends, society, the or spouses, etc.) makes us feel guilty since our birth: WHAT WE ARE. The perfect crime I tell you!
This is what makes the exercise of discernment so difficult: if you don't know how these predators work, but you don't know how YOU work, it's like leaving the door wide open. . The predator’s number one weapon is DOUBT. The opposite of doubt is not knowledge, but CONSCIOUSNESS. Awareness of who you are.
In the case of highly empathetic people, one of the narcissistic pervert / organic portal tactics may be to arouse emotion. In different forms (for example, pretending to be vulnerable, which will trigger your compassion and immediately elicit your support, leaving a loophole to distill false light). The objective is to make you enter into REACTION, without having previously centered yourself: suddenly, you are in the emotional, which will lead to two possible things (non-exhaustive list), desired by the narcissistic pervert / organic portal:
Either you will, under the influence of emotion, put your discernment at the door and lose yourself Either you will, under the influence of emotion, make it your own fault, which will allow this very particular type of predator to justify its approach and discredit you. It’s not about falling into fear. It is not about falling into positive thinking devoid of all lucidity either. It's about being AWARE. Realizing that as a luminous being you are likely to be the target of attacks in various forms, rubbing shoulders with a narcissistic pervert / organic portal without realizing it being just one of many.
The function of the organic / narcissistic pervert portals will be to deactivate you, to disconnect you from your true nature.
It’s as I look out the window that the conclusion of this article comes to me: the awareness of WHO WE ARE is our greatest weapon, for it dispels doubt as the wind dispels mist. Awareness of who we are is the most beautiful, the most secure and the most fulfilling investment one can make.
A few weeks ago, I came across a sign on my Facebook feed, with a beautiful phrase:
"What you seek is seeking you" "What you seek is seeking you"
The function of organic / narcissistic pervert portals is to prevent you from seeking and finding who you are. The question is: are you going to let them?

Arsene concept

so basically we live in a society
Obtainable via idk, Velvet Room? maybe just finding a mask lying around during the Dark Hour or inside a TV with a 50% chance of obtaining Arsene?
Design
Passive A - SP Bar : The user's GUI will come with a light blue bar, representing how much “SP” the user has, which is 335 SP total. Moves that require the use of a Persona's special abilities to attack will drain the user's SP. The user can regenerate SP from successfully landing specific melee attacks(I know this isn't how it works in the games, but it's better than having people run while spamming SP regeneration items like every JRPG protagonist)
Passive B - Critical Hit : There is a 5% chance for the user's attack to crit, showing a little cut-in of the user's face before knocking down the foe off their feet and pulling up a menu for the user. While this menu is pulled up, the foe will remained stunned until the user chooses an option. Pressing LMB again will initiate the All Out Attack while pressing X will allow the user to simply cancel it, leaving the foe stunned for 10 seconds or until they're hit again. This passive can also be used against the user, allowing other players to crit the user and pull out an All Out Attack themselves. and yes, the foe and the user cannot be harmed while the menu is pulled up, so you can't just smack someone with a critical hit and leave them permanently stunned while your goons beat them up on top of the 10 seconds to use the menu before the foe gets back up, main difference with this is that Arsene users get to hold the stunned enemy at gunpoint too
Passive C - All Out Attack : If the player or foe chooses to use an All Out Attack, the person who performed the original crit will rush at the foe and perform Persona 5’s classic All Out Attack in a series of flurries directed at the foe before the user jumps away and does Joker's signature pose, dealing 45dmg or instantly killing if the victim is under 30% hp.
Passive D - Persona Mastery : you know what CD does with that “attack to automatically summon stand”? just that, but the funny mask just burns away

Stats :

Power - B+
Speed - C
Durability - B
HP : 285

Stats :

Q - “I am thou. Thou art I... Thou who art willing to perform all sacrilegious acts of thine own justice.” : Joker's mask will appear on the user's face before the user rips it right off, summoning Arsene.
LMB - “Swing your blade!” : The user will slash their dagger, dealing 15dmg and regenerating 15 SP. Cooldown : 4 seconds
E - Trickster's Combo : Arsene will perform a basic three jab combo, dealing 10dmg in each jab with an additional “curse” afterburn that deals 3dmg per second for about 5 seconds from the last punch. Cooldown : 6 seconds
R - Brave Blade : Arsene will swing their leg down onto the floor, slashing the foe ahead of them and dealing 35dmg with weak knockback. There's a cool downwards sword swinging effect that comes along with the attack. Cooldown : 8 seconds
T - “For his neutral special, he wields a gun.” : The user will strike a pose as they hold out their pistol, holding the camera in an over shoulder angle basically like a third person shooter. Pressing LMB will allow the user to fire the pistol in their current direction, dealing 15dmg in each shot. Pressing T again will cancel the move. Cooldown : 5 seconds
V + T(cursor on target) - Down Shot : The user will roll to the side before performing a leap as they fire at the target relentlessly in style, dealing no damage but stunning the target and applying Passive B. This move can be completely nullified if used on players who are blocking or performing unique attacks(ie VTW’s Roadroller or TA4's nail shot), rendering the user immobile and unable to attack for 3 seconds. This move can only be used 5 times per life. Cooldown : 20 seconds shares cooldown with default T
Y - Eiha : Arsene will jab their arm into the ground before a burst of dark energy bursts from the ground in front of them, dealing 25dmg + 5 additional curse damage to any foe caught within the 10 stud radius blast zone. This move eats up 40 SP. Cooldown : 10 seconds
F - Showtime : The user leaps upwards as Arsene does the same downwards jab motion in the air, causing a burst of red energy to burst underneath the user in a 45 stud radius, dealing 65dmg and great knockback. This move consumes 150 SP. Cooldown : 35 seconds
G - Cognitive Outlook : Basically, kneel down as blue flames engulf your entire body, giving you a free Joker cosplay. Press G again to go back to normal clothes. Cooldown : 10 seconds
J - Chains of Society : For some unexplained reason, chains will begin to surround the user before they grab it and lash it forwards, smacking the foe and dealing 25dmg with weak knockback. Cooldown : 15 seconds
J(if foe is killed) - Sinful Shell : Spoilers for Persona 5’s EndingThe chains that surround the user will begin to start breaking apart, summoning Satanael who will appear from the skies and fire a single shot at the target. [insert Persona 5 Final Boss defeat] A bullet made from the Seven Deadly Sins that can pierce even a god. imagine being a TWOH user on a building and seeing some giant demon lord point a gun at you
Z(cursor on target) - Grappling Hook : Just like Persona 5 Royal and Smash Bros, the user will fire a hook from their hands onto their cursor's location, pulling themselves towards their cursor if it hits anywhere within a 100 stud distance of the user. Cooldown : 12 seconds
Q + Z - Wings of Rebellion : Much like the Smash Bros Moveset for Joker, Arsene will flap their wings and propel the user upwards, creating great vertical distance with little horizontal distance. Cooldown : 16 seconds
X - Rebel's Guard : you know, the Smash move where Joker just holds his face and soaks damage, but it lasts for 7 seconds and you only get half the amount of SP out of every attack done to you(ie attack that does 50dmg will only give you 25 SP, 8dmg attack gives 4 SP, etc. decimals will automatically round up to next number for sake of long decimals breaking GUI). Cooldown : 10 seconds
C - Dash : The user will dash ahead. Cooldown : 5 seconds
Pose
Pose Theme
Stand(?)’s idle pose

Quotes :

same thing, couldn't pick between English or Japanese

English Dub

Now that's comedy!
It's showtime.
I'll reveal your true form!

Japanese Dub

You need proper punishment.
It's showtime!
It's useless.
Remember that feature I mentioned in the last two posts? Here it is again: When the user decides to just start smacking people or gets smacked, Life Will Change plays. Once the user hits 30%, it just kinda cuts to Last Surprise, which will start playing.
Sinful Shell sounds like a pain to code, but it'll look cool to pull out against that one guy with Doppio KC for absolutely no reason
oh, and I guess you can start running in circles after you beat someone to death

Who is was or would have been the best king?

So last article I wrote was about John not being innocent and I think looking back I agree with a lot of the comments in his defence so thank you for reading and responding to my post and not crucifying me.
This post is more about who would have been, was or is the best king. We have 3 candidates for this being John, Blyke, and Arlo since Blyke would have been king if John didn’t reveal himself but Blyke and John have a few more predictions so don’t take my word on it.
Let’s look at the one who we have seen the most as king, Arlo. However to see how much the school changed and the positives and negatives of it we have to look at Rei’s reign as king. The reason I’m not including Rei in this is because he isn’t in the series that much apart from a few mentions and what he did while he was in power. When Rei became king he saw the way low tiers were treated as wrong and actively tried to make it so High tiers and Low tiers can get along. A positive of doing this was Low tiers weren’t under threat and didn’t need to watch where they walked or who they bumped into as they felt safe however higher tiers lost faith in the hierarchy and even Arlo someone who I could say somewhat admired Rei saw this as wrong. As a reader of the series you would agree with Rei but looking at it from the perspective as a high tier in this world this is kind of unheard of and even if it doesn’t seem it a massive change from what they are use to. Now we go to when Arlo finally became king. At this point Remi, Blyke, Isen and Sera were first years however at this time I don’t think John was in Welston quite yet (correct me if I’m wrong). So along with new students of which would later become some of the highest ranking students in Welston he also had to deal with the high tiers. Now that they didn’t have Rei they saw this as an opportunity to disregard Arlo and do what they pleased. Arlo tried to get the hierarchy back in order but was unsuccessful at first. So he decided to challenge them all and we we know he won and the hierarchy was back and I would like to say this is around the time Remi overthrew Cecile (again correct me if I’m mistaken). How he was back in control he wanted the hierarchy to be what it was. High tiers had the most power, elites would either help the high tiers or have big roles in the hierarchy for example Blyke being a Jack and Isen being the head of the press for awhile. Then when John came I don’t want to spend to long about this part as you can go read it but despite what people may think Arlo is a smart king as he was able to know who to talk too for the information he needed and even after he was beaten by John he managed to keep his king role for awhile even if John wanted nothing to do with the hierarchy at the time.
The Pros of Arlo’s Reign: - The high tiers were able to trust the hierarchy again - He restored ‘Order’ - He had a lot of influence over the students and not all out of fear - He is shown to be very strong in both Brains and Brawn - He was able to ‘fix’ the hierarchy seemingly by himself - He didn’t hesitate to speak up against John after John went for Isen when he became king even grabbing him and if you look you can see John shaking so he has a lasting impression - Welston started to win more Turf wars and was seemingly ‘undefeated’
The cons: - Low tiers are/were mistreated - He is quite manipulative and threatens people to get what he needs (as shown with Isen) - He can be Cocky or Hot headed at times shown when he attacks John - He didn’t think about the long term affects of revealing John - He didn’t listen to Isen after he said to drop the John story - He goes too far in battle as seen in a Turf War when they called the queen back he continued to fight her - Is obsessed with the Hierarchy or should I say wants things to be as what he sees as ‘perfect’ - A hypocrite?
Now John and Blyke will be much shorter since we haven’t seen much of John and Blyke will just be speculation so don’t take my word on Blykes part.
Now onto the current king being John. I don’t think I need to go into how he became king as we all know the story by now however I will brush over a few key points. He originally didn’t want to be in the Hierarchy due to the events at New Boston. However a certain rat and Arlo were able to uncover him and when Arlo attacks him he had to choice but to fight back. He tried to keep this a secret from seraphina but eventually she finds out after the Joker incident. Now Sera and him have a fight and are no longer friends and recently he came out as the new king to the school and chooses Cecile as the new Jack. This is a very brief analysis of Johns story however I will go more in depth in the Pros and Cons.
Pro of John being a king: - He has a lasting impression on students and even made some of the higher ups in the school such as Isen, Cecile and Zeke fear him even with the great power they hold. - He is a very and I mean very good fighter and has very tactical movements so we can also assume he is very smart. - He doesn’t let anyone cross him and if you cross him you won’t be forgiven showing he sticks to what he thinks - If he doesn’t like something he will remove it showing he’s strong minded - He knows his friends and Foes - He is able to keep control without anyone disregarding him -Turf wars will probably go just as smoothly
Cons of John being king: - He has a fragile mental state at the moment and could snap at any time - He actively is trying to tear down the ‘Safe house’ which is a place for everyone to feel safe - He’s repeating the past - Doesn’t know where to draw the line with his fights - Vulgar attitude - and I quote, ‘won’t hesitate, it’s on sight’ (this can be a pro and a con) - Low tiers are still mistreated as seen when Zeke attacks Sera - A hypocrite
Now this is where it gets difficult with Blyke as it’s all speculation so when I make a final analysis with the kings I will say who would have been or was the best king including Blyke and then I will say between John and Arlo
Now for the sake of the argument let’s say John hasn’t come out as king however the joker stuff still happened along with his falling out with Sera. I would like to say that I think low tiers won’t be as mistreated as at this point the safe house would have been approved so he would know they way they are treated. I would like to say that Turf wars however won’t go as smoothly as it would have done with Arlo as Blyke is weakest king ability wise that we have covered, unless his power level went up since he started training. Now at this point some people would have graduated such as Arlo. We wouldn’t know who the jack would be and I don’t think it would be Isen or John just because they are all in the same year and the Jack is meant to be the new king or queen after the current ones leave. I think he will somewhat still keep the Hierarchy however I think the school will be in some sort of disarray after he graduates.
Pros of Blyke being a king: - Low tiers aren’t as mistreated - He is strong not as much as Arlo and John but can hold his own in a fight - We don’t know how smart he is but I will go out on a whim here and say he is at least above the average in his school even if just about - He is friends with a lot of High tiers/ Elite tiers and him being friends with Remi who would probably still be queen at this time might help him also being friends with the king of gossip will probably help in the long run - Is very loyal - he doesn’t go out if his way to reveal the fake joker to the crowd so the fake joker isn’t attacked later on
Cons of Blyke being along - Anger issues - Turf wars won’t go as smoothly as they once did - after he leaves if he doesn’t choose his Jack well all the hard work to get low tiers a safer life may be undone - he acts before thinking most of the time - A hypocrite - Him being a vigilante might mess with his role
Now I would like to say if we are including my speculations about if Blyke was king along with Asslo and John I think he would be a good king however we haven’t seen much of John yet so John might be or evolve into a good king towards the end of the story if he’s still in power.
Without Blyke I would like to say right now Arlo is a better king but as the story continues John may be the better pick.
Thank you for reading my post and sorry if there is any grammar or spelling mistakes as English is not my strength.

Loveletter Story, Character & Game Mechanic Idea - (SUPER LONG Essay I hope DrApeis reads this)

Loveletter Character and Story Ideas:
This is a continuation of the last post that I have made beforehand. The link to the last post is over here: https://www.reddit.com/lovelettermtf/comments/huhx9f/loveletter_story_concept_project_blood_rose/ .
English:
I am just a 14 year old hobby writer who speaks Korean as their first language and actually seen the potential that this game has. In no way am I a professional author, but I would still want to give my idea on the story and the mechanics of the game. I used to be a very old fan of Yandere Simulator and I liked the idea behind it, but seeing the game's story disgusts me as it is just a hastily put piece of slop. I do not what Love-letter to become like the mess Yandere Simulator is and I want to see Love-letter succeed as a popular indie game. Even though, the devs don't decide to use my idea, like I said I am a native Korean who currently lives in South Korea, I can still provide a Korean translation of the game itself.
A lot of people liked my idea that I had for Love-letter's story, so I am currently making a post to write down my full concept for the story. So, in this type of game I am envisioning two types of scenarios. One of those scenarios is a violent, dark thriller story, with Setsuna as a hard yandere, that I am going to call the Blood Rose Scenario (the Blood Rose symbolizes the extreme commitment that Setsuna is willing to make, to the point that she would even commit murder, when it comes to obtaining her Senpai). The other one is a brighter romance, mystery story, where Setsuna is a soft yandere. I am going to call the Raven-hunter Scenario. Now that we know that those two types of stories, I will state that I would work on Blood Rose Scenario and anybody else if they want to can work on the Raven-hunter -both scenarios do have a lot of potential it is just that I am not familiar with romance or slight-comedy.
Now that is out of the way I am now going to define what a "rival" should be. A "rival" should be someone Setsuna believes to quote on quote disturb the tranquility between the relation between Setsuna and Senpai. The difference between my definition and what people usually consider what a rival to be is subtle, but there is still a huge difference in that the rivals do not necessarily have a crush on Senpai and some like the student council president don't even like Senpai at all. Using this definition, the range of rivals can now be larger, from one of the popular kids to members of the city police department, without getting into the problem of pedophilia and can make the story more interesting.
Now all of that is now done, I am now going to discuss what the basic story structure should look like for the game. I didn't plan out what the story structure of the Raven-hunter scenario should look like, but I do know that this should be a pacifist story line for Love-letter, where Setsune is a soft yandere that tries to find out who the other yandere killing the rivals are. The endings of Raven-hunter would depend on how many rivals Setsuna is able to save and also dissuade from liking Senpai, and also on how quickly Setsuna is able to find out who the other yandere is (this is also a puzzle game scenario). For the Blood Rose Scenario, however, I did plan out the entire basic story line. The story should have 2 main story arcs and 1 major minor arc -that needs to be complete to progress the game. I will name the two main story arcs Senpai Love-letter Arc and the Crime, Investigation & Punishment Arc and the major minor story arc, Study of human morality... and demons?.
Senpai Love Letter arc is basically what most of you would expect in this game, eliminating rivals, through either peaceful or violent ways, that Setsuna suspects to be interested in Senpai and also building a good relation with Senpai -this will the only arc that needs to be completed in both Raven-hunter and the Blood Rose Scenario and it's pretty standard stuff. If Setsuna has bad relations with Senpai, he will reject you no matter what you do. The other arc, Crime, Investigation & Punishment arc only exists for the Blood Rose Scenario, and it starts immediately after Setsuna kills or kidnaps a rival. In this arc, Setsuna faces challenges from the school faculty, police department, and the student council who all tries to uncover her crimes. If the Crime, Investigation, & Punishment arc occurs there is going to be a new suspicion meter and if that suspicion meter reaches 100%, Setsuna gets incarcerated -Framing somebody else temporarily will bring the suspicion meter down, but the more times you frame someone, the less effective the method becomes. Now the last arc is the Study of human mortality... and demons? arc. This arc mostly surrounds the occult club and their club leader, and you need to start the arc in the Blood Rose Scenario while it is not necessary in Raven-hunter -I only said start, you can always fail the arc by building up a extremely negative relation with them after finishing the first mission.
These arcs would all have stats and missions that the player needs to care for in the Blood Rose Scenario and also in Raven-Hunter. For instance, the player needs to take care of their relationship with Senpai or else they are going to get a very bad ending at the end. For Crime, Investigation, and Punishment, if the suspicion of Setsuna reaches a 100% it will be a game over and for the last arc you do need to take care of your relationship with the Occult Club and their Leader or you will face a bad ending -and of course the sanity meter still exists. Balancing these stats would be the challenge of this game. This would also allow for the game to be difficult without having to create Mary Sue characters like Raibaru or Megami like what Yandere-dev did and will also make killing every single rival using the same method, in the same time period, while also making the same mistakes every time impossible because of how Bow Chan will quickly rack up suspicion if that is the case. I want this game to be different from Hit-man in ways that are more realistic and also want this game to still be somewhat challenging in easy mode.
Talking about easy mode, now comes the talk of difficulty. There should be about 4 difficulties. The first three difficulties should be Easy, Normal and Hard, pretty standard stuff. Now comes the 4th, most hardest, and the most jokingly named difficulty: Kindaichi mode. For Kindaichi mode, the rules of hard mode would apply, but with addition of the Kindaichi rules which would make the game almost impossible in both the Blood Rose Scenario and Raven-hunter. The rules that apply are the following:
김전일의 법칙:
Kindaichi rules:
Rules that apply in Raven-hunter:
당신이 탐정과 가까운 사람이라도 안심하면 큰일난다. 범인은 누구에게도 자비를 베풀지 않는다.
-(English Translation) Even though you are very close in relation to the detective don't be relieved. The criminal does not show mercy to anybody.
-(English Translation) If you know anything about the criminal's activity then don't tell the police, tell it straight to the detective. If you hide this information you would for the short term be safe, but a lot of people will end up dead and the effect that this will have will be tremendous. However, you might get killed by the criminal for releasing info about their activities.
범인이 까발려졌다고 안심하지 마라. 범인이 수틀리면 그 자리에서 당신을 죽여버리는 수가 있다.
-(English Translation) Don't be relieved if you had found the criminal. The criminal might still be able to kill you on the spot.
정말 당신이 아무 죄도 없고, 무고하다고 해도 일단 탐정이랑 있게 된 순간 아무 이유도 없이 죽을 수도 있다. 그냥 김전일이 보이는 순간 죽을 힘을 다해서 도망가라.
-(English Translation): Even if you didn't commit any crimes or is innocent, staying close to the detective means that you might just die from no apparent reason at all. If you see the detective run as fast as you can.
-(English Translation): If the detective actually visits where you are and if a murder actually occurs then and there, stay close to the Detective at any time. When the Detective goes anywhere, stay by her side and follow her around. Even though people look as if the Detective is some sort of a lunatic don't even bat an eye. Are those looks that you get even comparable to your life? So, for the time stay close to the Detective and if there is a chance to talk to her you must find common interests between you and her and treat her well in order to get a chance of getting closer to her relation wise. Yet, do not be relieved at any time. This method only protects you from getting murdered because you aren't related with the events and you didn't take any actions that would cause for an another person to seek vengeance (such as blatantly flirting with Senpai in front of everybody), which causes the murderer to not even bat an eye on you as you walk together with the detective.
Kindaichi Laws that might apply in Blood Rose Scenario
-(English Translation): If you are the criminal that is targeting to kill someone, if that target is in very close acquaintance with the Detective, stop that plan right away. If you actually managed to kill a close friend or a family member of the Detective will start blaming herself for failing to protect a close friend and will immediately go into serious mode. If the detective then states "in the name of my kin and the dead" you are screwed! (Next thing you know your suspicion meter is going to increase by two to threefold when killing an another person after that). Just give up at this point.
-(English Translation): Lets say you get lucky and manage to frame some one else. Don't be relieved. The Detective might just return home, look through the evidence, get a hint and shout "the mystery is all solved!" and return back. (This event is not going to fire all the time or immediately bust you if it does. So, don't be worried... but it will release the person who was framed and raise the suspicion level on you)
-(English Translation): If you had the bright plan to frame the Detective, do not go through with the plan. The Detective will 100% be proven not guilty, and you will 100% be proven as the criminal. (I mean it is technically possible to frame the Detective in easy mode, but I kind of find this method to be a cheapskate method. It would be impossible to frame the Detective in any other mode, but you won't be busted immediately for it. I mean still the gain of suspicion level is going to hurt a lot :) .)

You might just get pointed out as being the criminal just because you are wearing a different pair of glasses (You can't just run around, after the body was discovered, in P.E. uniform, a swim suit, or customize the character appearance)

Basics aside, it is time to talk about the more complex of story writing. While, some people do not find the story of the game to be that big of a deal compared to how the game runs and the mechanics of the game -Like I have not been able to find anyone criticize Yandere Simulator's story line for reasons other than having characters that seem Mary Sue like Raibaru or Megami and also having Ayano and Senpai be monotone characters. I honestly find the story of a game to be one of the most important aspects of the game. Even though the game play is good, if the story is bad, has no characters that amplify the story or sends a very loaded, opinionated, and outright wrong message that leaves false impressions on people on something and some topic, I do not think that that is a good game. This is why I also crap on Fallout 76, the Last of Us 2, and various other games influenced by SJWs and feminists, they either don't have characters that make the story feel more alive or they give a very loaded message when delving with the story. By the way messages do not equal theme, these way that these messages are sent can be broad from impressions that the story give to the main idea of the text.
Before anyone asks, no I am not going to write a critical analysis about the hot piece of crap Alex's story is. His lazy ass does not deserve more attention than it is currently getting, and you know what Alex I and everyone else in the society care jack shit about what you do in your private life. I am not your mother or father, I am not responsible for bailing you out of your financial situation that you have actually caused yourself by not doing anything for the last several years. Do I even want to call you a manipulator in the first place? Nah that would an insult to actual manipulative scammers and politicians who are really skilled at this art, manipulation is an art form and the title of manipulator is not something you deserve at all.
Honestly, I believe that you are just throwing a hissy fit, like a child who does not know how to control themselves. I honestly stopped having random outbursts of anger like when I was in elementary school, several years ago, but you nope even though your like what 32 years old that tantrum of yours never change. You know that you seriously have a problem when a 14 year old teen with lasting anger management issues, to the point that he actually got suspended from school once, states that you have serious problems.
I find your supporters, the critics, and even the developer of Watashi no Mono to be extremely generous and even too lenient towards the bull crap that you pull off. These people for a long time gave you a chance to change your ways and reply back reasonably, and the way you return back that favor is by banning people at about the speed that a machine gun turret shoots. Heck even the developer of the game Watashi no Mono, god bless him he is a saint from what I see from managing to stand people like Yandere Dev, presumably called off the game for you out of guilt and pity.
Is this what you wanted? Does harassing a developer, that even gave credit to you even though they even gave you credit for a game that you didn't participate in making, to the point that he pulls down the game feel good? You have lost the last shreds of moral dignity as I perceive it and I am ashamed to even share the planet with you at this point. Keep in mind I also used to be an avid fan of your game. Your overarching idea for a game was novel and amazing, like amazing enough to hook me into the game development. However, you decided to sloppily, hastily, and lazily compile a trash of a story. This story is an insult to writers and storytellers and it causes me to revolt in anger. Alex you've done goofed
Returning back to the point that I have been talking before, I would now like to talk about what i believe the characters should look like in the game. To do so lets talk about constant and non constant characters in the way I defined for story-writing. A constant character is a character that does not have a major change in character or how they respond. In a way they are one of the most stable character-wise (I am stating character because character does not equal personality, you will get why). A non-constant character then is a character that faces in character. These characters are very unstable action-wise because it is unpredictable what action they would take when they are in different states of environments.
For a story to be good there needs to be an balanced amount of these two types of characters. If the story is made up of entirely of non constant characters then these non-constant characters lose their charm and also makes the individual characters less detailed. If the non constant thing is excessive in a character, the character might show off as an absolutely unrelatable insane guy or make the audience think that they have been shock-baited. On the other hand, if everyone in the story is a constant character, this would be an extremely huge problem as there isn't enough variation in the character's reactions and the characters feel dead not alive. This is a huge problem with Yandere Simulator, all the characters are too constant meaning that they do not feel alive or believable. I mean there are still characters following the trope Kuudere, but you do not make a Kuudere a center-light character.
Kuuderes are supposed to act as foils compared to the main character or some other character. If Kuuderes are the main character, then you make colorful foil companion characters that contrast the monotone main character. You don't just make all the characters a monotone, one dimensional mess, that just makes them feel dead. Now to clarify again, I have nothing against the use of monotone characters in stories. They make great foil that sets up contrasts in terms for characters. However, the problem is that for these characters to be effective they need to be done right and put at the right place, not just lazily spammed all over the place. Think of characters as tools to progress the story, if the right tools are used it can be used to create a good story. However, when used incorrectly the story falls apart, figuratively of course but people would wish for it to be literal.
I think for this game having about 12-15 rivals would be good and adding onto that several other major characters relevant to the story of the game, like Bow Chan’s friend, Info-Chan, members of the police, there should be about 20 major characters. These 20 major characters will lead the plot forward for both the Blood Rose Scenario and Raven-hunter. All the other characters are of less importance, and generally don’t impact the story that much if they are gone. I will now provide a brief summary of the Blood Rose Scenario and also provide greater detail on what the protagonist should look like. (I was trying to put an example dialogue for all the characters I have in mind, but it was taking forever.

Summary of Blood Rose:
Love-struck and falling madly in love with a Senpai that she knows, a paranoid Akimitsu Setsune( ends up murdering one of the fellow students, within the academy. The reason for this is because Hanami’s paranoia and delusions causing her to suspect the girl for “trying to take her senpai away from her” whom Hanami believed was rightfully her’s by birthright. Even though she tried to destroy all the evidence she could, the action was witnessed by Info-Chan, who swooped in to blackmailing Hanami and forcing her to sign a contract of mutual assistance and also caught the suspicion of the police as the girl suddenly went missing for several days. Will Hanami and Info-Chan be able beat back all the suspected-suitors and the police that Hanami from living a peaceful life with senpai or would the Blood Rose that they grew together doom for good?
Characters: Haichi Setsuna (하이치 세츠나) a.k.a Setsuna:
Nicknames in Blood Rose: 死神(Reaper), Raven, Slave, Cherry-Chan
A high-school student by the age of 17, Akimitsu Setsuna is a calm, benign, and kindhearted student who seemingly looks out and cares for her peers from time to time. In actuality, she is very mentally unstable and has no problem killing to "preserve the peace between her and Senpai". She grew up under a single mother, who was constantly abusive towards Setsuna throughout her childhood. Setsuna has a wide variety of tones when it comes to, from being calm and benign to being dry, sarcastic, and rude, and these tones switch between each other depending on the situation. The only constant thing about Setsuna is that no matter what situation it is, she still manages a way to laugh when faced with appalling stupidity.
Dialogue Samples (I might use some of these dialogues later):
Normal:
"That's a secret Senpai. All people have secrets mind you. It is just that those secrets grow larger by time to encompass more people. Someday you will be part of that secret and will share it with me, but that someday can be faster. You are a smart person and if I am assessing correctly will be able to solve this problem with ease. Until you are able to solve the problem, good bye!"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Senpai-
"Hahaha! You should have seen your face when you realized you got pranked! Normally I would have stayed quiet during these kind of pranks. Yet, this was the dumbest and also the most funniest thing I have ever seen so I couldn't stop laughing!"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and her friend Sayaka-
"To be honest... I don't know what is going on. If I did know what caused the students to drop like flies, I would have told you sooner. I am also afraid... afraid that this lunacy might take away the people I care about. This feeling of fear is a natural feeling that people feel constantly throughout their lifetime. The only way to avoid feeling fear is to cope with it and live on the rest of your life or else you will constantly be in fright to all of mankind's calamities and mishaps."
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Sayaka (basically an example of what deception without lies might look like)
"Had any luck after that? I guess she won't be bothering you anymore, since she is 'too preoccupied'. Hey I mean it is... tough luck for me, but a blessing for you nonetheless. Am I wrong?"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and spoiler-
Agitated/Insane:
"What the fuck do you want?"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and her mother, who is by the time of the story pretty dead-
"No...no..n"
"Oh the irony! I got your little bitch-ass out of that situation, and what you do is bite my hand! I mean you do have a valid point to be honest. In a way you got me right on the point that I am Death-incarnate... hahaha. However, other than that you don't understand me and I don't understand a single bit about your personality. May I call you, sister, for that one because you really are one step ahead of me? Yet, like you realize I don't fucking care at this point, the only person in my head is Senpai, so just let me break your chains and bring you to the place you were always interested."
-Dialogue between Setsuna and spoilers-
"You seriously thought I would follow all of your orders! Who would have expected a joker to act as a wild card within the entire deck? Pff, this is getting me to chuckle into my bones! I can't... I just can't stop laughing...hahahaha! Haha... I do not know who you are, if I did then you would be back in the depths of inferno, and I think you are really smart, but sometimes you still manage to get me to chuckle...hehe"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Info-Chan (Yeah these two, in my idea, have a very unorthodox relationship because while they are partners, they are partners not because of acquaintance, but out of fear and necessity)
"Really though? If you are not holding anything back, then why haven't you just released the video to everyone in the school at the first sight of dissent? Oh you are such a wimpy snake, a silver-tongued liar that is too afraid to actually enforce their own will by themselves. Is this also why you act anonymously as well? Oh god I am so scared of Lucifer, when in fact I am the Reaper, or its heart, that enforces its wills.
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Info-Chan 2-
This is gonna take forever..so I will just start writing if anybody likes the idea.

The Case of the Missing 40,000 Jerry Nugget Decks

The Case of the Missing 40,000 Jerry Nugget Decks: A Detective Story
NB: I first published this article (with pictures) at PlayingCardDecks here.
Jerry's Nugget Playing Cards. The story of the original Jerry's Nugget decks is a fascinating one, and there are many interesting side-stories to explore about along the way. You can read the main story about the Jerry's Nugget decks in my previous article here: The Legendary Jerry's Nugget Playing Cards.
But the full truth still remains somewhat hidden, and there are aspects about the Jerry's Nugget story that even today we can't totally be sure about. And with the passage of time, several juicy tidbits of lore have become attached to this famous deck.
In this article I invite you to join me in a quest to explore another juicy story that has become part of the Jerry's Nugget legend. Is it true that the final stock of 40,000 Jerry's Nugget decks was bought up from the casino by a mysterious overseas buyer? Because this is an oft-repeated part of the story, that you'll hear whispered rumours about across the landscape of the internet. But this a statement of fact or fiction, and is it truth or myth? It could mean that right now someone is potentially sitting on a small fortune of Jerry's Nugget decks worth around $500 a piece. If it's true.
So please put on your Sherlock Holmes trench-coat and deerstalker hat, arm yourself with a good amount of deductive logic and persistence, and join me as we see if we can really get to the bottom of this mystery, and dredge up the truth behind this famed haul of 40,000 decks!

A Secret Stash of 40,000 Decks?

If you are curious - like I am - and do some digging about the story and history of the Jerry's Nugget decks, it won't take you long to stumble across mention of the claim that a stash of the final 40,000 decks of Jerry's Nuggets was bought up in a single swoop, cleaning out the casino's remaining inventory of these prized decks.
The story about some lucky buyer nabbing a final stash of 40,000 decks is circulated quite widely around the internet. Do a Google search for "40,000 Jerry's Nugget" and look at how many hits this gets! Some places that sell the decks even include this in their ad copy. For example, here's the ad copy over at one online retailer, which was selling authentic decks for $525 before they sold out:
Another online retailer says the same. Many reviewers have parroted this information as well, such as this example. So do various sites dedicated to information about playing cards, such as this example.
As far as many people are concerned, this information is more along the lines of "fact" than fiction, and it's become part of the story that everyone accepts. Little wonder that it is often repeated by collectors in discussion forums about playing cards, and that it has given more than just one person a tinge of envy.

Who is the mysterious buyer?

So who is the lucky guy with 40,000 decks of precious Jerry's Nugget decks hidden in his basement or garage? And is the story even true?
Some of the sources for this story seem quite credible. And they also reveal the buyer's name: French magician Dominique Duvivier. One person quotes Jordan Lapping, apparently among the first cardists to get Jerry's Nugget decks and use them for flourishing.
Dominique Duvivier is a French magician who performs and works with his daughter Alexandra, and together they have a high profile in the world of French magic. They are even well known in the circles of international magic, and were featured on the cover of the June 2013 issue of Genii Magazine.
Norwegian magician Allan Hagen has a long-time interest in the Jerry's Nugget decks, and he also mentions Duvivier's purchase of 40,000 Jerry's Nugget decks as apparent fact in something he posted on Reddit in 2015, where he describes his perspective on their rarity and value.
You'll read similar reports in an article published by Ukrainian cardists Alexander and Nikolay about Jerry's Nugget decks in June 2017. Two things are common to all these accounts: the number 40,000 for the haul of decks purchased by the mysterious overseas buyer. And now his name: Dominique Duvivier.
I contacted a number of different sources, including people who had personal connections with some of the key players who were closely involved when Jerry's Nuggets decks first became a fad among magicians and cardists in the late 1990s. One source told me: "Interesting, the name of the European magician - it was a big secret back then. Someone actually told me his name back then, but it was on the proviso that I never publish it. Well, I see it's out of the bag now."

Was Dominique Duvivier the buyer?

But is there any evidence that Dominique Duvivier was really the mystery buyer whose name had been a carefully kept secret for some time at least? It was time for some more detective work. Google brought me to Duvivier's personal website.
It didn't take long to discover that Duvivier does indeed have a real fondness for Jerry's Nuggets Playing Cards. They are everywhere - in his photos, his videos, and his instagram.
Judging by the many French-language comments on his site, it also becomes apparent that Duvivier is highly respected and appreciated in his home country for his magic. It's also evident from reading some of the comments that his Jerry's Nuggets decks are a signature of his performance. Some even consider them to be the equivalent of a Stradivarius that Duvivier uses to perform with as a master magician.
But it was when I checked Duvivier's youtube channel that I found some real gold: Dominique himself performing with Jerry's Nugget cards in this clip. In fact, if you check out his other videos there, you'll find quite a few where he performs magic with Jerry's Nugget playing cards, like this performance from 2014, this more recent ace cutting routine, and this false shuffle. Duvivier has even contributed a Jerry's Nugget themed trick to the magic industry, entitled Jerry's Nuggets Cards in Bag.
You can watch the promo video for this trick in French or English. His daughter Alexandra Duvivier successfully used it to fool Penn and Teller on their show Fool Us. Here's the episode, and some unseen footage.
But just because Dominique Duvivier happens to really, really like Jerry's Nugget playing cards doesn't prove that he bought out a massive stash of the last 40,000 decks from the casino. So this still begs this question: Did any of this even happen? And is there really someone on this planet with a hoard of 40,000 decks, whether it is Dominique Duvivier or anybody else?
One of my favourite photos on Duvivier's site is this one here, with his haul. If that's any indication, surely the legendary haul was starting to seem somewhat plausible. It was time to ask around, and check in with some of the people who were around when the Jerry's Nugget decks first became the rage.
Of the sources I consulted, few could be considered more reliable than Lee Asher. For many people Lee is synonymous with the Jerry's Nugget phenomenon. He also had close connections with the events of the time, and was instrumental in bringing the Jerry's Nuggets into the limelight in the first place, by singing their paises. He was kind enough to respond when I contacted him for comment about Duvivier's alleged haul of 40,000 Jerry's Nugget decks, and Lee bluntly told me the following:
"This is misinformation. There weren't 40k decks left in 1999. We don't even know if Jerry's even printed 40k decks."
Really? Apparently Lee Asher knew Duvivier personally, and he was the very person who first told Duvivier that the casino even had the cards for sale. He also visited his home and shop in Paris many times throughout this period of time. In Lee's words:
"Without a doubt, I NEVER saw 40k of ANY deck there. That's basically nine pallets worth. The house, their magic shop and night club weren't big enough to house these decks. It also seems Duvivier isn't the last one to buy the remaining decks. Jerry's Nugget Casino believes they sold the last case of cards to someone in Japan in 1999."
Well, it seems that the story had to be put to rest. Was this entire story perhaps just a magnificent urban legend after all? And if it was, where does the number of 40,000 decks come from, and how did this story get so much traction that it spread all around the internet, and is accepted unquestionably by so many people? My task had just become a bit harder, but I wasn't going to give up yet. It was time to try to track down where the many websites that quoted this story got the figure of 40,000 from in the first place.

Where does the figure of 40,000 come from?

With some more digging, the oldest article I could find on the subject was by a card collector who has a collection of fine articles on his site, White Knuckle Cards. This particular article dates back to 2009, and is one of the earliest references to the legendary stash of 40,000 decks that I could find.
This particular article seems to be the first time the figure of 40,000 pops up, pre-dating all the more recent mentions of it. And it's not hard to figure out how it spread from there. On 6 August 2015, someone called "Doctor Papa Jones" added these details to Wikipedia's article on Jerry's Nuggets, evidently relying on the White Knuckle Cards article. As a result the Wikipedia article now read as follows: "In 2000, a private collector purchased the remaining stock of 40,000 decks".
So now this "fact" is on Wikipedia and has some real "credibility". In fact, the number 40,000 stays up on Wikipedia for the next five years unchallenged! And that allows it to spread around the internet and go wild. Because where does everyone go when they're looking for reliable, authoritative, and trustworthy information about something? Wikipedia!
Despite the mention of the magical stash of 40,000 decks, Duvivier's name remained out of the spotlight for a further four years. It was simply a mysterious "private collector" who had purchased the big haul. But in 2019, someone connected the dots to Duvivier, and so the Wikipedia article was changed to include his name.
So how did that happen? Well the supporting reference that Doctor Papa Jones included in his 2015 edit was a link to an article by Dan and Dave Buck, dating back to 7 Dec 2011. This article is also no longer available, but can be tracked down with the help of the Internet Archive here. It doesn't give the figure of 40,000 but does drop Duvivier's name.
So the evidence seems to suggest this development: Apparently relying on the White Knuckle Cards article from 2009 as a source, the number 40,000 first embedded itself in the WIkipedia article on Jerry's Nugget Playing Cards in 2015. Slowly the story grew, until somebody finally connected the dots that were hidden in plain sight elsewhere on the internet, and as a result Duvivier's name gets added four years later. Now things are set up for a great story: Mr Duvivier is sitting on a massive stash of 40,000 Jerry's Nuggets in France.
The story gained even more traction as a result of the revived interest in Jerry's Nuggets that inevitably happened when a tribute deck was printed in 2019. It was inevitable that many would rely on Wikipedia as a source, and so the details even ended up being quoted in ad copy for the reprinted decks. What had previously just been a matter of quiet rumour or speculation, was now considered as fact. Oh, the joy of Wikipedia - it has certainly helped promote quite the legend here!
And it doesn't take a genius to see that if this is true, Duvivier could be sitting on a small fortune. At $500 each, 14,000 decks would be worth around $700,000. Naturally a market flooded with them would drop their value. But even if the going price dropped to $100 a piece, that would still value his holdings at over $100,000. Even if he just sold the occasional decks at $500 a pop, this windfall could generate a nice little secondary income. That is, if the legend is true, a fact yet to be proven....

Revising the figure

Because this year, the Wikipedia article was changed. By now of course the (mis)information about Duvivier's haul had gone far and wide, and a lot of potential damage has already been done. But on 25 March 2020 someone called "TheCongressGuy" changed it to read that Duvivier "purchased the remaining stock of 1,500-2000 decks".
Suddenly the number of Duvivier's legendary purchase had been reduced from 40,000 to something around 5% of the size. A figure of 1,500-2000 seems much more likely. So who made the change and what was their source?
I did some more digging and managed to track down TheCongressGuy. He is Kevan Seaney, who describes himself as an "antique playing cards collector, specializing in the Congress 606 brand" and posts here. In February 2020 he wrote here that he'd learned that Duvivier had not purchased 40,000 decks. I was curious, and eventually found the following video that he posted about this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2pctAEuiZA
And who was his source that Kevan credits for correcting the previous (mis)information about the number 40,000? If you watch that video, you'll find out that it is none other than the great Lee Asher. Lee Asher isn't just "anyone". He's a playing card expert, and the current president of 52 Plus Joker The American Playing Card Collectors Club. He's the guy who first generated public interest in Jerry's Nugget decks, brought them to the attention of cardists like the Buck twins and Chris Kenner, and was later a purveyor of these icon decks via his website. He's also had personal connections with Duvivier, was the person who informed Duvivier that they were available from the casino, and has personally spent a lot of time with him in Paris.
And Lee Asher is a key person that has helped get real Jerry's Nugget decks into the hands of a new generation today. He's the guy who was instrumental in making a collaboration happen between Jerry's Nugget Casino and Expert Playing Card Company, by suggesting that EPCC get the exclusive licence needed to reprint these iconic decks in 2019, as announced in an official press release here.
It's plain that along with EPCC's Bill Kalush, Lee Asher (pictured below) was singularly responsible for getting an officially licensed Jerry's Nugget deck back into the hands of a new generation and into the collections of those who couldn't afford the massive sticker price of the originals. So if anyone has a passion for the original Jerry's Nuggets, it is Lee Asher. Of anyone in this picture, Lee is the person with the most credibility, and his opinion and perspective should carry a lot of weight.
With Asher as his source, Kevan Seaney points out that 40,000 decks of Jerry's Nugget playing cards is the equivalent of around 8 pallets. That's a massive amount, and would weigh around four tons. And it would take up a tremendous amount of space! Kevan cites Lee Asher as saying (via voice messages in Instagram) that in 1999 Asher told Duvivier that he could get the decks from the casino, and that Duvivier bought around 1,500-2000 decks at the time. Lee subsequently visited his home and store - France's oldest magic shop - in France many times. And according to Asher, there was no way Duvivier had room for 40,000 decks. Kevin also says that Lee Asher pointed out to him that these were technically not the final lot of decks sold by the casino anyway, and that the last decks (a "case" of unknown size) probably went to Japan.
Wow. That really changes things! So based on this apparent "new information" from Lee Asher - who to his credit has apparently been saying this all along - Wikipedia gets a new edit by TheCongressGuy aka Kevin Seaney. The impressive figure of 40,000 is reduced to a much more modest 1500-2000, which is paltry by comparison to the much larger figures circulating the internet, and not nearly as impressive a story. But this is only after Wikipedia has been singing a different tune for five years, so the `damage' has been done, and the story of Duvivier's windfall of 40,000 Jerry's Nuggets is already accepted by most people as a true story.

Duvivier's own story

Suddenly it occurred to me to investigate Duvivier himself. Was this perhaps a line of inquiry that might produce some solid leads and definitive facts? Has the man himself ever commented on all these stories about his legendary haul? Could I find anything directly from the man himself that would shed some light on these legends? In fact, why hadn't I thought of this earlier? Just because nobody else seems to have dug up or reported anything from the man's own mouth, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. I slapped myself for my own foolishness, and headed back to Google.
As it turns out, Duvivier has written about this! But because it's an article in French, it's escaped notice from most people. Since he's popular as a professional magician in France, he not only has his own website, but he also writes his own blog. And sure enough, he's addressed this very topic in a blog article that he wrote in April 2011 under the title "Magiphageuh No 14: Les Jerry's Nugget".
With the help of an online translation tool, we learn this:
"As most of you already know, I only use real "Jerry's Nugget" cards to work with and have been doing so for many years. As these cards happen to be extremely rare to find on the market (I am obviously talking about the original Jerry's Nugget cards and not the recently reprinted ones) and they excite the magical world a lot, I am therefore constantly asked how many I own, how long have I owned them, what deal I made to get them and with whom, why do I have so many cards, why did I choose these specifically, why don't I want to sell them, why, why, eh?! And I hear such amazing stories about myself on these famous "Jerry's Nugget" cards that I decided to speak on the subject myself today."
This sounds very promising! Duvivier then goes on to tell the story about how the Jerry's Nuggets gained their legendary reputation, and the unique qualities they have. In France in the 1970s, American playing cards were quite rarely seen, and Duvivier knew a French pilot commandant called Reyno who loved magic, who would occasionally bring back cards from the US to a small circle of French magicians. At this time even standard Bicycle and Tally Ho decks were prized by these French conjurers, so besides them a Jerry's Nugget deck was considered a real crown jewel.
Over the years Duvivier occasionally got more of the Jerry's Nugget decks, sometimes even an entire case of them at once, especially via his friend Michael Weber, who was his main supplier. We fast forward to 1999, when he finds himself heading to Las Vegas to perform at The Magic Castle. Here's the story in his words, courtesy of an online translation tool:
"In 1999 (if I'm not mistaken) my daughter Alexandra and I were hired to perform for a whole week at Magic Castle and then for a few contracts in Las Vegas. You may think that I had only one idea in mind at the time: a trip to the original casino where my favourite cards were from, Jerry's Nugget! Michael Weber had told me that there were still a few decks for sale there, so as soon as we arrived I immediately asked Philip Varricchio, who had come to pick us up in a limousine, to take us there. He was rather surprised, as we hadn't even put our bags down at the hotel (yes, I'm a fool) and the old Jerry's casino wasn't really known for being a must-see place! So I told him that I wanted to go there to buy Jerry's Nugget cards. According to him it was impossible to get them for the simple reason that they hadn't been around for a long time, but I was so insistent that he finally complied (hey, hey, hey!). When we arrived there, we went to the gift shop of the casino and I asked the salesman if he was selling their decks.
- Yes," he told me, "I have a few.
He shows me a small piece of wall in the back of the store where a hundred decks were on display. I ask about the price. Not even expensive!
- Well, I'll take them," I say (laughs).
And of course I ask if he has more in reserve! Yes, there were about a hundred boxes left (each box containing a large number of cards, 144 decks!). After a little negotiation, the unit price was even lowered to less than $1.
That's it, that's how it happened and that's it. In fact, in all this story, the most difficult, the longest and the most expensive was to get the stock back to France.
Since then, I've been seeing, little by little, the bids going up on these cards in a rather hallucinating way, whereas, of course, that wasn't my initial motivation at all. From the moment I bought the remaining stock, it's as if everyone wanted to own even more! But I just wanted to have enough stock of Jerry's Nugget decks because I'm a card fanatic and these in particular. I use these cards because they're the best cards I know and I've fought like a big man to own enough of them for me (I should mention that I never had a middleman or a partner to buy these cards). Anyone could have done as I did and I don't understand why no one did: you just had to take the trouble to go to this casino, because the cards were available! In any case, now they are all warm and cosy in different safes, which I won't tell you about. They say I'm the person with the most cards in the world, but I have to say I don't care. I know Chris Kenner is the one who planned it, he has a lot of them too. I've been offered golden bridges to sell a few packages, or even my entire stock. I've had some incredible offers over the years. I never intended to create a buzz with these cards: I just use them for my own personal consumption, that's all...because they're my favorite cards."
Probably the key sentence in that account is this, and the best translation seems to be something like this:
"Yes, there were about a hundred boxes left (each box containing a large number of cards, that's 144 decks!)."
The formula is simple: around 100 boxes with 144 decks each. If true, that would mean 100 x 144 = 14,400 decks. Given that this is directly from the horse's mouth, suddenly the story becomes slightly more plausible. So too is his additional statement:
"In all this story, the most difficult, the longest and the most expensive was to get the stock back to France."
That suggests he didn't bring the whole stash to France in one go, which might explain why visitors like Lee Asher and others who saw his home and magic shop never saw any evidence of them. I'm not a French speaker, so I'm happy to be corrected if I'm misunderstanding anything Duvivier has written - by all means check the article for yourself in the original French, to see if I've got it right. But the long and short of it seems to be that Duvivier is saying that what he bought from Las Vegas around 1999 was not a stash of 40,000 Jerry's Nuggets decks, but 14,000 decks.
14,000 is not nearly as impressive a figure. But even though it's only a third of the size of what the legend floating around the internet says, 14,000 decks is still an incredibly impressive haul. Certainly the amount of pictures and videos that show Duvivier performing with Jerry's Nugget cards, seems to suggest that they are very much part of his regular repertoire. It could just be possible, and maybe I've finally found the truth!
Perhaps the most defining photo of all is this one (credited to Zakary Belamy), which shows Duvivier enjoying a bath with his Jerry's Nugget playing cards! Given the value of these playing cards on the market today, some might consider this sacrilege, but it sure suggests he has a large enough supply of Jerry's Nugget cards. At any rate, his collection of them seems large enough that he can even afford to take them to the bath for a photo op along with his favourite yellow rubber ducky.

But is it true?

Was the mystery solved at last? It was time to get back in contact with Lee Asher, and share my findings. But despite the claims of Duvivier in his 2011 article, Lee is not convinced that Duvivier is a credible source. To be fair, this is what Lee Asher has been saying all along, and for years he's been saying that the story about the legendary haul of 40,000 decks wasn't supported by the facts.
Ultimately what this comes down to is: are we going to believe what Duvivier says? For the most part, Duvivier has appeared to have had little interest in setting the record straight, despite the fact that the rumour of him nabbing 40,000 decks persisted as long as it did. And if he does have a large stash, why has he shown little interest in selling any of the decks that he does have, instead being happy to hoard them or use them only for himself? Would he really have spent all the time, energy, and money necessary to ship even 14,000 decks of playing cards across the ocean from the United States to Europe, just for his personal usage, at a time when the street value of these was only a dollar or two a piece? And if he did, where did he put them, and why has nobody ever seen his stash, including those who visited his home?
There are other details about Duvivier's record of events that call aspects of his narrative into question, such as his complete omission of any mention of Lee Asher, who was the one who made him aware of where he could get them. And in those days, the casino gift shop was very small, so is it really reasonable for them to display 100 decks on their back wall, as Duvivier claims in his 2011 article, when they had such little space to work with?
I had some private correspondence with another magician/cardist who has also stayed at Duvivier's house, and that individual expressed similar sentiments. He agreed that there was no evidence of Duvivier ever owning that many decks. Just do the math: 40,000 decks would mean Duvivier could use a brand new deck every single day for more than 100 years before he chewed through a collection of decks that size. Again: very unlikely. If he really did have that many, it would be way more than he could ever use, and surely he would have sold some by now - which he hasn't. This person remains somewhat skeptical, but acknowledges that the figure of 14,000 is a more realistic number that is not beyond the realms of possibility, especially if Duvivier has them locked up in a storage facility in Paris somewhere.
As an educated guess, it seems that there is good reason to cast some suspicion on this story, and there are some aspects about it that seem rather unlikely. Shipping that many decks, at the time only worth a buck or two each at most, all the way from Las Vegas to Paris would be crazy. But a man willing to jump into a bath with a yellow rubber duck and destroy $1000 worth of playing cards in the process strikes me as crazy enough to do it. Perhaps Duvivier's story is true after all.

A final twist

I was now several weeks into my adventures as an investigative journalist, and I was getting ready to wrap up my story and publish it. But there was one final lead that I had not yet explored. If I was really going to try every possible avenue of information, I had to try contacting Dominique Duvivier himself. Why not? Admittedly, the odds of getting a response from someone about his apparent stash of precious Jerry's Nuggets wasn't likely. If there was any truth to the story about his legendary haul, even to some degree, then he's undoubtedly had hundreds of inquiries over the years. Just imagine the long lines of people asking him about his stash, trying to convince him to part with some of it. If yet another email comes in on this subject, he'd probably roll his eyes and press `delete'. He is working full time as a professional magician after all, and has a career to worry about. I couldn't blame him if he was tired of responding to what undoubtedly would be countless messages from prospective buyers.
But I had no intention to buy anything, so as a good amateur journalist, I had to try. It was a long shot, but to my surprise, I got a response from Duvivier the very same day! It wasn't much, but it included one unexpected bombshell - especially after the journey I'd been on so far: "You'll be glad to know that a special article is going to appear in next Genii Magazine. It's called Dominique Duvivier and Jerry's Nugget cards."
I was stunned. Was someone else working on exactly the same story as me, and had they beat me to the punch? Maybe even Duvivier himself? Could it really be true that in little more than two weeks time, the next issue of Genii was scheduled to come out, and would potentially reveal all? Suddenly I knew that I had to wait with publishing my story. In further emails, Dominique was tight-lipped about any more details. At the very least, surely I would have to wait until that issue of Genii was available, and fork out my cash and purchase a subscription in order to read it. I owed it to my readers to explore every last clue, and give them a story that included all the evidence.
So that is what I did. I waited for the July issue to appear online. Digital editions of Genii are released online each month on the 20th of the month. Finally 20th of June rolled around, and I eagerly perused the contents of the latest issue. Nothing. Nothing remotely Duvivier related. Nothing Jerry's Nugget related. Was Duvivier for real? An inquiry with the editor of Genii produced this response: "Not this issue. Coming up." Would it be August or September maybe? Further inquiries produced only silence.
In follow up correspondence with the Frenchman himself, Duvivier told me "I wrote the article myself. It?s quite long." That sounded promising, but it could just be about his love affair with Jerry's Nugget Playing Cards, rather than a "tell all" story about his haul. There still was no guarantee that it would even be published. And I couldn't be sure that it would offer any more information than his blog article from 2011 which already gave his side of the story, or that it would be any more reliable than the version of events he'd provided there. Was it really worth waiting any longer? It was time to share my findings with the world anyway, and I could always provide an addendum to my story if any credible new information appeared.

Final Thoughts

Is this the final word on this subject? No. I've tried to do the best I could based on information available to me, and shared as much as I could with my readers, so that you can form your own conclusions based on the evidence so far. Undoubtedly there are still some missing puzzle pieces, and in future years some new information could come to light that shows that some of my conclusions were misplaced or that puts aspects of this story a slightly different perspective.
Today we are two full decades removed from the time when the original decks first sold out at the Jerry's Nugget casino. And the further removed in time that we come, the harder it becomes to uncover the truth. Memories become murky. As it is nobody at the casino seems to remember the specific details of what happened. At the time they were probably only too glad to get the remaining stock out of their hands, and nobody could have anticipated how these decks would become the famous icons that they are today. Even their chief evangelist Lee Asher has to be somewhat surprised at the turn of events he's produced since first singing their praises some twenty years ago!
So what can we conclude from all of this? Here's some final thoughts that I'll leave you with:
1. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
Unfortunately, it's a fact of modern life that not everything on the internet is true. And as we've seen, this also applies to sites like Wikipedia. For topics that have a large number of experts or people interested in a particular subject, changing the facts on a Wikipedia article will quickly see the changes being reverted. But with a more niche subject, like Jerry's Nugget Playing Cards, and especially when it concerns circumstantial material that nobody is quite sure about, it's easy for misinformation to enter Wikipedia. And once it's embedded there, eventually the lore spreads and becomes considered as "fact". So it's important to check your sources, and don't take everything you see online as gospel truth - even if it's on Wikipedia.
2. The legend about the stash of 40,000 decks should be put to rest once and for all.
It's a myth, and there simply is no evidence for this claim anywhere. At most, there is the claim from Duvivier himself that he bought up about 14,000 decks. That might be true, but again, we only have his word for this. As a counter-point, there are those like Lee Asher who know Duvivier and have visited him many times, and insist that they never saw any evidence of this. The enormous cost of shipping a large stash like this to Europe already makes it somewhat hard to believe.
There's no doubt that Duvivier is a huge fan of Jerry's Nugget decks, and he appears to own and use them more than most. But in the end, how credible is he? How seriously are you going to take someone who is happy to post a picture of himself in a bath with a rubber duck and playing cards from a Jerry's Nugget deck? Either that means he has far more decks than he knows what to do with, or he is a little loopy. Or perhaps it's a bit of both. You've had an opportunity to read all the evidence for yourself, so you decide.
Either way, we can safely say that there has never been a stash of 40,000 decks, and the jury is out on whether there was even ever a stash one third of this size. But even if the size of the legendary stash turns out to be smaller than first thought, the reputation and magnetism of the Jerry's Nugget decks has only increased in size, and these now iconic decks will remain firmly embedded in playing card lore.
------------------
Update from the writer: After the original publication of this article, Dominique Duvivier personally phoned me on 24 July 2020 to discuss it, and to share his side of this story. He remembers events slightly differently than Lee Asher does. As Duvivier recalls it, his own interest in the Jerry's Nugget decks dates back to the 1970s and 1980s. At that time he was sourcing them from his friend Michael Weber, who along with magicians like Chris Kenner was also interested in these decks. According to Dominique, he only met Lee Asher during his USA tour in 1999, after he had already bought out the remaining stock from the Jerry's Nugget casino. Duvivier confirmed that the figure of 14,000 accurately reflects the approximate number of decks he purchased from the casino at this time. He shipped the majority of these to France by boat, and stored them in a warehouse, intending them to serve as a life-time supply for himself and his family. Look for his story in an upcoming issue of Genii magazine.

Loveletter Character and Story Ideas

-(English Translation): Don't just do stuff like suddenly wearing a watch on the right side of your watch (if you usually wore your watch on the left or didn't at all), wear your belt loosely, or even wear your pants loosely. The Detective will highly likely look at you with questioning eyes. Behave like you normally would. You might just get pointed out as being the criminal just because you are wearing a different pair of glasses (You can't just run around, after the body was discovered, in P.E. uniform, a swim suit, or customize the character appearance)
-This Kindaichi mode is just a meme suggestion so it does not have to be taken seriously. This is the only meme suggestion and everything else should be taken seriously-
Basics aside, it is time to talk about the more complex of story writing.

Characters: Akimitsu Setsuna ( 秋光 刹那/아키미츠 세츠나) a.k.a Setsuna:
