De Casino – Concertzaal

I'm a 32 year old male (72 kg and 179cm) with three kids. I haven't been a real runner in my life, I ran sporadically from time to time for. I did football and cycling(mtb, road) most of my life.
It all started in march, I went to a bachelorweekend of a good friend of mine. We went went to a casino, the first ever in my life. I had a budget of €20 and I won €145 on the first slot, very nice. I come home and thought I wanted to buy a heart rate monitor for my cycling. I buy the polar 430 for almost the exact amount I won. I get the watch and see it's mostly running oriented with programs. I think why not try a program. I start training for a half marathon in july. In may I realize running a half marathon is easy (I did 10 miles ones and that was ok) so I thought I could challenge myself to do a marathon. I found the marathon of Ghent on date far enough away to start training.
Halfway through the program of polar I read the book 80/20 of Fitzgerald....... shiiiiiit polar you suck I'm doing everything I shouldn't do according to this book (and reddit). So i start using the 80/20 method into week 8 of his program. Still plenty time I thought and I already have some base..... boy was I wrong

PRERACE
I go with the misses to Ghent and I don't sleep that night... not a minute... goddamnit.
RACE
0-21k :I'm very nervous but I start real good. I'm running half a minute per kilometer faster than normal because I'm following the pacers of 4:15. I thought why not it's a race it will give adrenaline to keep this tempo up. After 12 km I let them go but keep them in sight for a few kms. Meanwhile my wife is encouraging me with my sister-in-law who meet me at some random points. I find a group with 2 women and 2 70-year olds. We start talking and it's fun, we motivate each other. I can keep them up without to much effort.... so I thought..........
21k-27k: Did a half marathon on 2:09 min. which is good for me. I wasn't empty but I start to get sour in my upperlegs. I can still run decently but I finding myself difficult keeping up. At 25k I let them go and my stomach starts to hurt. I eat my millionth cube of hardened fruit/gel (don't know what it is exactly) at feeding zones. I'm thinking shit, this doesn't go well. I stop eating the next 5K's and drink only. Meanwhile I see some ungodly aliens in the distant chasing a flag that says 2:59. I do not compute that speed. My stomach gets better but my legs are going to hell at this moment. My upperlegs are killing me at every boardwalk, I can lift them but not very high. At this moment my pace is 7:20 min/km, still decent I think to myself. I wont end at 4:30 but 4:45 is doable and "respectably-ish". But then who comes around to hit me in the face(knees) just when I thought I could raise the pace??! My old injury I thought I was rid of.. my fucking fucking fucking runner's knee. Fuck you, I can still run but not the whole time. If there was something I really really didn't want to do it was walking on my first marathon. But I just couldn't keep running. I walked for a minute or 2 every time I hit a kilometersign. At 35k you know you're absolutley not there yet. Now old men and ladies are starting to pass me, mentally I'm broken. I see my wife 2 times who helps me and motivates me which was good to me. After a few km at pace 9:20, I try to motivate myself by putting some music on to distract me of the pain. It helps But I still have to walk a few times. at 40K i get motivated, I NEED to end this under 5 hours. So I start pacing at 7:00 and I'm getting emotional when I see my wife at 400m from the finish, i'm holding up tears. I enter the dome where the finish is. I end at 4:58 I get a massage and although I'm vegan I drink a chocolate milk because my body needed something filling because I was really really tired and it was that or nothing.

POSTRACE
I've made the rookie mistake to start too fast which resulted in an overuse of my knee and thus a runner's knee. I'm disappointed my knee let me down (or the other way around) because I thought it was something of the past. Thanks to the 80/20 I ran a lot for my standards (40-50K a week) without a single injury because I never went to deep to trigger this injury.
Anyone has some advice on how to work around this problem? Do I just need some more running time to get my body used to this problem, I started running for real in march this year. Or is my body just not made for such distances (which I don't want to hear ;-).
The pain in my upperlegs is also a little worrying. I never had this problem before. Any advice?
All in all I enjoyed my first 25k. I'm certainly going to do it again because I want to do it right. I want to finish a marathon without having to walk and in a decent time. I can say i'm a addicted to running now. Although my body is still a bit broken, and my wife and 2 kids are sick at the moment, I really want to go out for a run now, but I physically can't :-D.
